Okay so i'm in an area where T-mobile only has edge coverage and I'm hating my life right now without 3G, but AT&T has 3G coverage here, so why won't it let me roam on to the faster network? I can pull it up under network services but it just won't let me actually roam on to the network. Is this an issue of the phone simply not having the VPN's and such? Cuz if T-mobile won't charge me for roaming I damn well wanna use it! I'm using Cyanogen's Mod and the Hero 1.3.5 theme. All I want for my birthday is 3G!!!
They use different frequency's for the 3G signal.. thats why unlocked G1's can't use att 3g even if they have a AT&T sim
Hmm... seems strange the G1 would still be able to see the network being that it's using a different signal. Is there any way around this? Cuz they just stationed me in Quantico, VA for the rest of the summer and I'm ready to shoot myself on this Edge crap! And sadly 2 months is just too short of a time to actually get internet installed lol
hum.. I doubt it will help any but thier are som VPN settings floating around the board here that haykuro made. most ROMS come with it, I doubt it'll help though.
if that doesn't help take 2 Motrin and drink plenty of water. /end navy joke
Haha, yeah I'm a corpsman, we're working down here at the Marine Corps officer candidate school, so my mantra has been "Take Motrin, hydrate, and change your socks." These past couple weeks. Yet they somehow still mess those things up lol.

Im sorry to say but you cant use 3G on AT&T. Tmobile didnt want to wait for any bands in the 1700mhz or 1900mhz band to become available, so there 3G runs in the 2100/1700mhz band and that is the only band the G1 can use to get 3G. You can see AT&T service but that is voice, not 3G. AT&T 3G runs over the 1700/1900mhz band. here is a artical about this.

You must be barely outside of their coverage area. The map shows 3g coverage on both sides of where you are. The schedule that is floating around says they are supposed to expand coverage to Chesapeake, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Richmond, and Virginia Beach this summer so you might get lucky and get it before you leave.
Quantico's huge, T-Mobile has no 3G service there, and WiFi is out as NMCI doesn't permit wireless APs.
You're stuck with EDGE on T-Mobile, or EDGE on AT&T if you roam, but you won't get a speed increase if you use it, just a roaming charge. The problem is the frequency, as others have mentioned. AT&T uses 850/1900 where as T-Mobile uses 1700/2100. There's no known way (yet *crosses fingers) to use a T-Mobile G1 with AT&T's 3G service, so sadly, you're going to be stuck for 2 months out there with what you have.
I have my Dream working on AT&T's 3G service, and it works quite well, but it's not a G1. I specifically bought a Rogers Canadian HTC Dream (which is band-compatible with AT&T) for this purpose. So if you're *that* desperate for 3G service, you could spring for a Rogers Dream or Magic phone, but they aren't cheap. Additionally, they don't run custom ROMs yet (we just got root on the Rogers Dream this morning, and the Rogers Magic was only last week). So... There is no perfect solution for you yet if you want 3G and root. I've been living on my ADP1 with EDGE for 5 months now, and it isn't *that* bad, I guess.
On the more "bleeding edge" frontier, there's speculation that if one were to flash the Rogers dream radio to the T-Mobile G1, that it would do 3G on AT&T instead of T-Mo, but nobody's been able to get it done yet. A few people say it's the same chipset, it'll work, a few others say it won't, but till somebody tries it, we'll never know for sure. Either way, it's not currently possible as we don't have a Rogers Dream radio image.
So, there's your options I'm afraid. And something else to consider - even though AT&T says they have 3G, check with somebody else who has their service to see if they're actually getting it first. Quantico is a huge base, and there's no cell towers on it to my knowledge. So it's possible that nobody is getting 3G signal there, on either network.
I know that Sprint and Verizon both use CDMA for their phones, but does anyone know if I could take my Sprint Hero to Verizon's network and have working coverage?
My sister just bought a Verizon phone and she has full coverage, with 3G, but my Hero frequently says it is roaming.
you can try... probably not gunna be easy to get them to enter that MEID into their system.
sprint doesnt charge extra for roaming UNLESS like, 60% of your calls are roaming, or something like that. In that case, they will actually call you and say "You're roaming too much, you should go to another cell phone provider" (unless the reps in my store are lying to people, lol... I just started working for sprint a couple weeks ago. Lots of people ask about roaming here)
No, Sprint doesn't charge for roaming, but if 60% of your minutes are roaming for 3+ months, they WILL call to discuss terminating your contract. As for Verizon taking on your hero, no, they 99% most likely will not. It's a VERY rare occasion they let a non verizon device on their network.
would be plenty easy to just sell your hero for a decent price and go to Verizon and get the Droid..

I thought VZW used slightly different bands for EvDO than Sprint? Or maybe I'm just imagining that since AT&T uses different bands... hm.
Seriously, if you have that much of a coverage problem, I'd talk to Sprint about cancelling without an ETF. May have to talk to their retentions department... someone who works for Sprint could shed more light.
(Personally I'd switch to T-Mobile over VZW. Cheaper, and you have an international-standard GSM device ;P)
Highly unlikely Verizon will activate it since it is not in their ESN database even though they use the same bands. Sprint won't activate Verizon phones either.

yup, if the phone doesnt say sprint either on the phone or in the firmware they will not activate it on their network.

I used to activate non-vzw phones all the time. However, smartphones may not be handled the same.
pretty sure they'll take it...they started their "any app, any device" initiative in 2008
they won't take it. they specifically said they will only activate a phone if it's either unbranded or verizon branded. sprint branding is a no go.

I don't think you can swap phones between the CDMA sprint network and the Verizon CDMA network. Don't they use different parts of the spectrum?

Not sure about the different parts of the spectrum, but you can definitely move a phone between Sprint and Verizon (from a technical point of view). But you'll have a hard time getting Sprint to activate a Verizon phone on their network. Not sure about a Sprint phone on a Verizon network, but they did make a big deal about their "any device" announcement in 2008, which said that they would allow you to use any CDMA phone.
1. while talk of changing esn is strickly verbotten(i believe?) if one were to find a htc hero that had somehow become corrupt and the meid had been changed to all 00000000000000000's it would be possible to fix with qxdm (the htc hero is essentially the sprint branded htc droid eris)
2. in order to activate phones on the vzw network generally one would *228 ota a cellphone, however in the ota process a vzw phones SPC is (almost)always 000000 while the hero from sprint has a SPC which is a randomly(?) generated number
3. a proper vzw PRL must be loaded to a phone in order to make calls on the vzw network
4. MDN/MIN SID must be properly programmed in order to make calls on the vzw network
5. at this point you will likely need the assistance of a nice vzw tech, as the phone will 611 to vzw, but will not make calls (afaik this is due to a-key authentication?)
if you get the right person at vzw, ask the right questions(why doesnt my vzw branded phone call?), and you have performed the other steps correctly you should have TALK and TXT within 5 min
note:
-you will still show you are roaming all the time (now ALL the time actually)
-afaik visual voicemail does not work
-if you want data expect to use WIFI or spend a good amount of time studying another VZW handsets various data settings and a good amount of time on VZW support(have not even tried this)
-neither i nor xda are responsible for what you do to your phones and as always anything you do is at your own risk!
Something wierd happended last night. I was trying to install that JIt Dalvik install by following the direction on the gumbo 1.5c. I also attempted to used the mapdroyd app Any event after a reboot I had and when it loaded no signal showed , a damaged SD card sign showed. When attempting to place a call it asked me to dial *228 nothing would result of it . Any event a reformat and install on the OS again fixed. All.Any one know of any reason why that would of happened. I was truly experimenting out of curiosity
I can, and its been done
I would like everyone to know I just spent the last 3 days figuring ALL of this out.
As my understanding is, you can change esn as long as you are and "authorized user" and your not stealing anything, therefore if I have two phones I paid for, and I have service with Verizon (which makes me and authorized user as per their TOS.)
then its not illegal. Anyways, for the sake of education it is possible.
I've swapped out my esn/meid. Transferred all my info via qxdm service programming. uploaded a verizon prl. rooted. and now im looking for a suitable Verizon based rom for the hero... I'm attempting to put a stock 2.1 eris rom on right now. (btw the phone texted and called just fine, I just want to have a complete verizon based rom for the finishing touches)
Do you think hd2 owners who have at&t will get to use tmobiles wavelength and finally get more than edge network from this happening??
For reference if new to this subject at&t and tmobile both have an EDGE network on the same wavelength so on an unlocked tmobile hd2 one can use the slow 2g internet connection of at&t, but the 3g networks run off of different bands so an at&t # can't connect to any 3g whatsoever, with at&t's purchase of tmobile wouldn't at&t have to utilize tmobiles 3g wavelength in order to still provide 3g and 3.5g to everyone with tmobile phones that aren't compatible with at&t's current network? If so then I'm personally benefitting from this and finally getting a decent mobile data speed on my tmobile phone with my at&t network
Please don't bash at&t here, I know they suck, I've used their service for quite some time now, I'm just looking for opinions and facts on this matter
and I know euro hd2's already pick up at&t 3g, I'm talking about tmous hardware
From what I have read it seems that in a year or so if this deal is accepted by the FCC at&t will reuse and refit tmobiles network towers/equipment to use there 4g LTE network and give it a boost while removing T-Mobile service altogether causing us T-Mobile 3g/4g users to get new phones that work on AT&T's data network so in your case I highly doubt it there really isn't a benefit for AT&T or T-mobile other then T-Mobile users will be able to have different range of phones (mostly iPhone) I really hope the FCC denies this deal not only does it kills another service provider option limiting us to 3 major companies and forces people escaping the high price of service from sprint, Verizon, and At&t (I've been on them all and left because of price and QOS) but also makes AT&T top dog just because they bought out another company
Yea I read about this yesterday. Highly pissed off. I can't stand at&t. Crappy phone signal, high prices, and crappy customer service. I hope this deal does not go through. Just like when sprint was supposed to buy tmobile. Hopefully it's just a rumor.

yeah, about 5 minutes after i posted this i saw the article stating that at&t is decommissioning tmobile's 3/3.5g towers to use them for their LTE, too bad at&t is already selling "4g" phones (ie the atrix and the inspire 4g) with no capability of utilizing TRUE 4g via LTE later on... anyone else think at&t will re-release said phones as LTE devices for $50 more than the hspa versions? i cant wait to switch to verizon personally, but im waiting for a htc pyramid compatible with verizons 4g network to switch
I received a letter from tmobile if I wanted to attend a meeting/conference for San Jose, Ca becuase my current phone service will be upgraded.... not removed....

No Tmobile and AT&T use sim cards and use totally different frequencies
If the deal passes I highly doubt that the T-mobile name will continue for long. Especially since both carriers operate on the voicestream network. This will combine T-mobile's few towers with ATT's many towers. But as someone mentioned earlier niether of these two have real 4G. It ticks me off when I see comercials calling it 4G. Only verizon is rolling out true 4G in LTE.
And in case you haven't heard. T-mobile was going down hill. They were losing money. There were talks of Sprint buying them at first. So it may be a good thing with ATT buying them up.
Well... since my favorite cell provider (T-Mobile) will be bought out by AT&T (junk), I will be switching to Sprint in July. I will be getting the HTC EVO 4G 3D.
Anyone else making the switch?

ATT did not buy T-Mobile. They have agreed to buy them, the DOJ and the FCC still have to approve the transaction. Which will be atleast a year down the road. But hey i guess if you're going to jump on the Sprint band wagon you might as well want to make the most of it.
By the way good luck talking to their CS reps. They know as much English as my 16mth old daughter.

I just came from Sprint about 2 months ago. I left because data here had become so slow, i am talking 47 kbps slow. But they are flipping the switch all over Wisconsin on 4G, and I miss my EvO 4G so much, I have to go back (and get the EvO 3D).
Day its released, day I have a mt4g for sale..
Sprint reps are ok. Don't know why everyone has a issue...

Sprint? Sprint is not a GSM provider. Many (if not most) people use T-Mobile and AT&T specifically because these are GSM providers. If T-Mobile gets acquired, AT&T will remain the only option.
I can't imagine someone knowingly switching from GSM to CDMA.
personally just left sprint. always had dropped calls, bad signal, and in order for them to fix my phone i would be charged an extra 10 a month for data that i was already paying for. if anything do the jump to verizon, only one worth going to.
I live in Miami so any cell pgone provider would be ok. They all have good service here.
I used to have AT&T a few years back and also verizon. AT&T ripped me off with charges. Verizon was great but a bit pricey. I have not been in Sprint yet tho. My brother is with them and he is very happy.
Lets see what happens in July and I decide to switch.
The EVO 3D looks really nice amd the specs are awesome. I am already missing my MT4G. The best phone I've had so far.

I couldn't have said it better my friend.
I would switch from Tmobiles GSM to Verizons CDMA if they werent so expensive. They have WAY better coverage in my area. They also seem to have better coverage in the more "boonies" type areas near here.
Most people couldn't give a damn about GSM or CDMA. Hell, you try to explain to them why they can't use a CDMA phone on a GSM network and they look at you like you have two heads. That being said, there's no way in hell I'll allow myself to use AT&T after the bull**** I just went through as an employee and a customer. Verizon is out because of the changes they just implemented re: warranty swaps. For those who haven't heard, if you have a warranty issue with your phone, Verizon plans to charge you $150 to replace it, if you have the slightest of cosmetic blemishes on your device. Volume buttons down work but you have a worn spot on your battery cover from the phone being in your pocket? $150. Screw that.
So yes, Sprint's data is slower, but in my area T-Mobile has a ton of dropped calls, bad call quality, and when I go into a large building (My office, a target, Costco, etc) I get no signal whatsoever. I'm going to try to hold off for the decision on the merger, but I might jump ship when the EVO 3D comes out.
Edit: Also, $50 for unlimited data, text, any cell call, and 500 minutes is a LOT better than the $70 I'm paying for 1000 minutes on the EM+ plan. Not complaining about T-Mo's pricing, just saying it's an option.

I would do it.
If my options are Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint...Sprint it is. CDMA or not, unlimited data plans should be unlimited. AT&T already has tiers, and Verizon is expected to adopt a similar system this summer. Would be nice if we t-mobile customers were grandfathered in, but doubt that will happen under AT&T. Will have to wait and see.

I am well aware of the differences beween GSM and CDMA. I know how the work and specs of it. But since I am not planning to move from the US, not I travel outside of it, it doesnt matter.
Right now, AT&T has the most expensive plans and they have a cap on data.
Sprint is the only one with a better pricing and unlimited cell and data coverage ( though I know is a little slower than Verizon's).
I recently read an article stating that tmobile and sprint offer faster 3g for smarphones vs dumbphone data, so it seems like sprint and tmobile may be priortizing there customer needs.. plus I heard a rumor that google may purchase sprint someday.. how awesome would that be.. I like gsm cause its world wide but so is wifi and my phone has that so nbd.. unlimited and still cheaper then the comp. If I'm browsing on my phone ill be using wifi anyhow.. as far as 4g goes pretty sure sprint is switching to lte soon and a law just passed forcing verizon and att to allow lte data roaming to smaller competitors.

I don't understand why people don't realize that nothing has happened yet and probably won't still for some time, there's no urgency to switch. I want to wait and try to get a rockin' phone in a little while when the buyout gets closer to reality. I spoke with a T-Mobile representative about it the other day and he said that most likely T-Mobile would still go by the T-Mobile name but would operate under AT&T. The only real thing that would happen is we would switch to AT&T frequencies cause they'd buy all our towers. Seems like it could only lead to better coverage, don't you think? Sprint seems too hit-or-miss for me anyway...
AT&T can't ruin T-Mobile overnight
From what I've read AT&T won't be able to repurpose any of T-Mobile's existing network for at least two years after the sale is finalized. They have also committed to honoring the contracts of existing T-Mobile customers. If the sale goes through, it should have no meaningful on your service at least through the length of any contract with T-Mo. I'm on prepaid, though, so who knows what will happen to my service.
Also, please wait and upgrade to the HTC Sensation before you brashly decide to cancel your contract and switch carriers so that I can buy it from one of you (preferably for pennies on the dollar, buyers market).
The merger wont happen rightaway its gonna be at least 2-3 yrs before we see changes, whats so hard to understand that either way is a win win for us Tmo customers,if the merger passes we have access to all at&t cell towers & if it dnt pass we still gonna have access to all those at&t cell towers... So sorry if this is a noobly question, I just haven't been able to find an answer anywhere on the internet or by calling around.
Will the google nexus 4 work on Sprint at all? I don't need LTE and I doubt I'll ever get it in my area. I'm fine with just regular 3G speeds.
(Lincoln, Nebraska ranked 4th worst city in the US for cell phone coverage. Awesome right?)
I really want to get this phone, but GSM is practically non-existent in my area, and I would probably go broke without Sprint's unlimited data.
I saw somewhere something about this phone having WCDMA. And I know Sprint runs on CDMA. Not sure if this is compatible.
Thanks for any answers provided
