I almost swore I wouldn't buy another Samsung! - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Before I owned the Note, I owned a S2.
I was impressed by the fact that it is the smoothest Android phone on the planet at that time.
But one day, I was using my computer to do some stuff.
The phone was just beside me.
I noticed the phone's battery is going to kapoot.
I even seen it going to sleep.
Too busy, I didn't notice the phone actually died.
When I was about to use my phone, it wouldn't wake up.
I tried every single method to turn on the device, but it wouldn't work.
I even put my friend's S2 battery, but it wouldn't turn on at all.
Left it for a week in the charger but to no avail.
So in the end, I sold my DEAD S2, and bought a Note.
And yesterday, I left my Note to charge.
This morning, I tried to wake it up, it wouldn't turn on.
But miraculously after removing the battery for five minutes
then putting it back, it turned on.
So yeah I almost swore I wouldn't buy another Samsung.
I'm still in Samsung camp and in love with my Note.
PLEASE DON'T FAIL ME AGAIN.
That's my story, thank you.

Cool story bro

I experienced the same thing with your S2 but on my Note. I ended up with having a DEAD Note. I sent it back to the service center for repair and hopefully for replacement since it still has warranty. I had to admit, I haven't tried to remove the battery on my Note for five minutes before putting it back in.

Check out this thread: My phone suddenly shut down I think your phone may not have died, but the screen just wouldn't turn on. A kind of coma-like thing, rather than a sleep of death. It's been happening to a few of us and seems to be benign, so far. It's happened to me just 4 times in 2 months. One of the times I was able to get the screen to turn back on when pushing the home, power, and volume buttons randomly. A battery pull always works, but rebooting by holding the power button for 10 seconds also works.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I did every button combination even after a battery pull. I even tried to use a different battery altogether but to no avail. I'm just curious, how long did you have to wait before you put the battery back into the phone after pulling it out?

I'm very sure it's not a coma. It's permanently dead. Used a JIG, it wouldn't turn on either. Left it charging for a week without removing, wouldn't turn on. But if my S2 didn't die, I wouldn't be owning a Note now.

Not to forget, I even did the holy three be-jesus button but nothing appeared.

Well you know what they say, either they have the same disease or the same doctor!! .
On a more serious note though, I'm happy everything ended well.

Maybe there is some power spikes at your end? Having both phones the same problem seems too much against the odds.

I got my Nexus 7 on Tuesday evening. After about 6 hours of playing with it
and checking things out I decided to go to bed, so I put it to sleep (not turn it off).
A few minutes later I decided that there was one more app I wanted to download,
so I went to wake it up and it wouldn't!
I tried everything -- short press, long press, try to reset, connect to computer (not recognized), etc.
I decided to let it charge overnight (no charging icon showed up).
The next day still dead, so I called google play and they will be sending me a new one.
On one hand it kinda sucks, but I feel good on how they handled it.
The tech said it was a dead battery, I am not so sure I believe that but ...
Mine was like that out of the box. It's already been repackaged back into its box and I'm waiting for google to send a replacement.
I hope you guys get your replacements soon.

Same thing happened to me - you need to realllllllllllly long press, for 30 seconds or more.

Did that to me once. Must've been an update of some sort. Anyhow, long pressed as others have suggested and it's been fine every since. No need to waste everyone's time shipping it back.
happened to me too. You just have to push the button kinda hard for a looong time until it turns on. try multiple times

OMG thank you so much, I just had a big scare. My Nexus 7 crashed so bad it turned itself off, and I have never had to turn it on yet (came turned on, and rebooted by itself after the 4.1.1 update), and using long press like I do on my Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy Tab 10.1 would not turn it back on. I tried plugging it in, no battery icon... I was really starting to think it was dead, then I saw your comment and just sat there counting...and eventually IT TURNED BACK ON. Phew, what a relief, thank you so much for posting this!

What kind of bothers me is that I was told that on my return, I have to put the new/replacement nexus 7 on my
credit card. If they deem that the warranty was voided, they will charge me for a 2nd device!
I would rather send them the broken device and if they decide the warranty is voided, send the broken
device back to me and I will try to fix it myself! I don't want to buy two of these devices!
And even if they don't charge me, I still have to check the device over. I have read where some people have
dead pixels, microphones that don't work, bad screens, and even dead devices like mine. I don't want to
have to do this a 3rd time

google should send out some sort of network message for those that already have a nexus 7 , and any new ones that ship they should insert a notice..
either that, send out an update to fix this issue...
My so called "flawless" N7 did this today ( wouldn't turn on until I plugged it in, when it booted it still had 11%. Checked my mail and the whole think turned black grey and white and moved up and down quickly then shut off. Now it won't power on and makes a buzzing sound when plugged in. Think the display is dead

Nexus 7 keeps turning off at random intervals

This has been going on for about a week or so.
At first I kept finding it off in the morning after charging, and then it became more common. Mostly happens when the screen is off but not always, I've had it turn off twice whilst I'm using it for example. A couple of times it has needed a long press to restart it before it will turn back on. Right now it has turned itself off and will not turn back on.
Battery has never fallen below about 50% throughout so it cant be that. It doesn't get heavy use so I'm not convinced its overheating. I had a look through the app list and none of them seem to be obvious candidates for the problem, and if i cant get the thing to turn back on I cant even test that.
I think this one is going back to HMV asap but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for me to avoid the problem with its replacement, or if anyone is having the same problem. Its a shame as I've been really enjoying my Nexus.

Hi, I had the exact same problem and ordered a replacement from the play store. I never found a way to fix it, I would recommend you just get a new one from HMV. I hope this helps
This actually just started happening to me yesterday on my 3 day old 16GB Nexus 7. I kept mine plugged into the AC all weekend, and yesterday watched it shut down itself once. Thought it was a fluke and just turned it back on...left it running overnight...pick it up this morning and it's turned itself off yet again. I guess I'll have to return this one before it completely doesn't turn on anymore!
Bah. Thought that might be the case.
2 days off charge (and some time on charge) and mine still wont turn on.
Definitely going back for replacement.
Elsydeon, it sounds like you should do the same. Took about 4 or 5 days to go from irregular to brick.
I seem to be getting the same thing... Once every day or two I pick up my Nexus and the screen won't turn on, I hold the power button and it starts booting up. I haven't had this while charging (maybe because the screen is on while charging??)
For those of you who traded in for a replacement, did this solve the issue for you?
I was getting this, but was using one of those magnetic cover/cases. If I wrap the cover round the back of the N7 whilst using it, the magnet in the case/cover is sometimes strong enough to turn the device off from the back!
Mine has powered off twice now

Just wondering as well like the last guy if swapping for a new one helped this issue.
I actually have looked at the battery data and think somewhere the nexus has gotten a power spike that turns it off but not sure if that definitely is the issue.
If it is, perhaps it's where we are plugging in or a failure with the AC plug?
Ideas? I've attached a photo. I hope it uploaded.
Thanks.

Nexus 7 32GB Display Keep Turning Off
My Nexus 7 32GB tablet's display continues to turn off at random times also. It happens while I'm watching a video in landscape. But then I stop the video, go to the home screen, and it still turns off. I already replaced one last week and now its happening to my new one. Anyone got answers? I'm going to call google device support today. Maybe if enough people call, they'll do something about it. Their # is 888-836-3987.

My NEW 32 tab worked out fine for a night and woke up today to the full battery indicator and tablet off again.
I have a new insight though, somehow the battery temp is rocketing to 100 and I'm guessing that is when it shuts off.
It may be because I am using SetCPU to limit my CPU speed to 300mhz when the screen is off. Maybe the tablet is trying to update all my apps while I am sleeping? It shouldn't use so much power though.
I'm going to try to create a new command to let it use it's whole CPU as long as it's on AC and screen off and see what happens tonight.
Happened overnight again. No insights? Does anyone think my nexus will finally brick sometime?
I don't know anyway of testing what is up with this thing? Thanks.
Nexus 7 Screen Keeps shutting off - Fixed
To those experiencing issues with their Nexus 7 screen randomly shutting off.
I just received one for Christmas, and thought this dang thing sucks. The screen would stay off and only show for half a second when I click the lock button to turn it back on.
The issue what the case. The the case, when folding back, contains a small piece of metal on the click. This little connection, thought not direct, causes the screen to shut off. I've tested it out multiple times just to make sure.
Again the FIX is, keep metal away from the back of the nexus, it doesn't like anything that can cause a magnetic field. Even if the metal is enclosed by something.
nexus 7 screen turns off
For those of you who are experiencing intermittent screen display going to sleep mode or turning off you can fix it by removing your tablet cover. Some third party tablets come with different strength magnets stitched inside the cover. The magnet is used to activate the nexus tablet smart cover functionality. If you flip the cover to the back of the tablet the magnetic field may cause the tablet to think it should turn off while in use. Get rid of your cover reboot your tablet and notice that the screen will stop turning off. Hope this helps.
Hi, I also had similar problems with my Nexus 7. After removing the back of the unit, I saw that the battery was nearly unplugged. I simply popped the connector in and voila! no more SOD, turning off, nothing.
So, the Nexus was probably turning itself off because there was randomly no more power comming from the battery.
Here's a link on how to remove the back shell : http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus+7+Teardown/9623/1

I was researching before going to get my Nexus 7 replaced today as it also started having this issue. After reading your post, I took your advice and removed the back to find that my battery connection was also barely intact! Thus it would lose power any time it was bumped slightly to that side. Now that the connection is securely in place, I've had no more problems!! Thanks to you StefGou!!!
Hey guys. A few hours ago I encountered the same said problem. I woke up to find the battery was depleted so I charged it. It turned on by itself and stated that I have 6% battery left. As I wait, suddenly the screen was like distorted and give me static sound then shut off. Numerous trials later end up the same. So I just put on the charger thinking to let the battery full. To my surprise, there was no indicator that my N7 is charging. I just leave it charging and left. About an hour I got back it still nit charging. I boot the N7 and it still on 6% battery. So I followed you guys handsomely instructions to remove the 3rd party cover and now my N7 is back. Thanks guys. But I wonder why it is happening now? I've been using the cover since forever.

So..my nexus 7 won't turn on..

Recently updated my n7 to 4.2, haven't done anything beyond rooting. I woke up this morning, watched an episode of Prison Break via Netflix and went to work. I always plug it in before I leave, and it was saying it was charging before I left.
I get home from work today, and upon trying to unlock the device, it doesn't turn on. I unplugged it, checked the plug in it was using, even tried multiple different electrical sockets. Plugging it in usually brings up the off charging animation, but nothing. Anyone know what might be going on?
My sincerest apologies if this has been asked/questioned before; I did a little searching before I posted this and couldn't find anything about it. Thanks in advance.

Try holding down the power button for 10-20 seconds.
If that doesn't work, try leaving it plugged in for a couple hours and check back on it.
Also try plugging it into the computer and seeing if your screen has gone bad, the Nexus 7 should still come up if it's on.
...I really can't believe I made a post for this..rofl. Thanks a lot, I guess I'm just a little too impatient to hold the power down longer than five seconds.

Had the same issue today...thanks to all for the quick and easy fix...feel like such a dork!
I'm having the same problem, last night I tried to turn on my Nexus7 and had issues.
My device is locked and upgraded to 4.2
While booting, the device would get to the lock screen then immediately power down. While it was powering down the screen would fuzz over and glitch a few times. As soon as it turned off it would repeat the process. I eventually got it into the boot loader and I noticed "based version: N/A" I'm not sure what that means but I hit start and now all it does is get stuck at the multi-colored X logo.
Getting back into boot loader I tried recovery mode, the response is "No command". Tried plugging it into my PC and I get the little (ba dum) sound but no device or folders to be scene.
I think i'm in trouble. I wanted to see if I could root it just so the device works again but I can't access it on my PC.
Can anyone think of a step or process I forgot to try?
My Nexus 7, wont turn on anymore either i charged it , it was very low went down to 11% battery so i turned it off and charged it, saw the battery on the screen and now.. It will not turn on, unit feels very warm when charging. It started to lag a bit , before i turned it off.. its normal software as supplied by nexus. so..> no matter how long i hold the buttons.. its off and screen stays black..
doh....asked for RMA number..only used it for a month
My Nexus 7 32Gb won't turn on either. I've been having since I got it the battery has been showing 0% since I turned it on. Regardless of how much charging I did it never changed. It ran fine and was told it might be to do with calibrating the battery but it then started to have problems turning on. It's gone off and I've tried the various power on options mentioned in this thread and nothing is working.
I guess it means a return to Carphone Warehouse. I had just got it all set-up as well.
I had rooted it and manually upgraded it to 4.2.1. It was running fine bar the 0% battery issue. I did the same thing to my Mum's 16Gb Nexus 7 and no problems at all with that one.

Hit power and it turned on. Do not use metal on case to open. Hope this helps. I got the idea from Youtube Video. I'm a new user and Not allowed to post links yet. Nexus 7 Teardown Review.

Thanks a lot I holded power button for more than 15 sec it got powered on thanks for your information.I am Happy now.
Man, I was just freaking out. Just got the wifi 16 on Monday. Rommed it as soon as I got home. Was using it at my local watering hole, and it suddenly just would not respond. Black screen, yadda yadda.
15 seconds of holding the power button and boom. Google logo, and then SmoothROM's boot ani. *wipes forehead* Never been so happy to see Jessica Nigri's face! lol
Thank You
I had been turning the Nexus on and off for the last couple of days, No "problems".
I tried to turn it on a couple of minutes ago and NOTHING. I even pluged it in and the battery charging icon did not turn on.
I also tried holding the button for 5 seconds but still nothing.
Fix:
I had to held the button for over 15 seconds to get it to turn on.
Thanks!
Similar problem with my nexus 7. Battery charge shows up when i plug it in. If I try to turn it on while its plugged in, i get what looks like static and lines on the screen. When I unplug it, it dies. If I hold the power button down, and plug it in, it will boot normally, and everything seems to work fine, but the battery shows as dead, and as soon as I unplug it, it dies.Just got it, it came with 4.2.1 running on it, it was an open box from Best Buy, and developer options were already enabled on it. Looks like someone tried to root it, f'd it up, and returned it. Guess I'm taking it back and returning it as well. Just a major pain as it's 1.5 hours each way from where I live to the closest best buy and back.
My problem is an easy fix, return it. However, I'd like to know if anyone figures out a fix for this incase it happens in the future.
Thanks.

Battery drain while tablet is turned OFF

I was using my Nexus 7 til it hit about 15% and the battery alert came out. I turned it off, plugged into the charger and left it there overnight. The following night I took it out of my pouch only to realise that its very warm. I had to press on the power button for a good 10 seconds before it turned on, and when it booted up the battery had only 5% remaining, even though it was fully charged (I checked to make sure it was 100%) and was left OFF the entire day.
I encountered this before but thought I solved the issue after wiping the device and flashing CleanROM 3.0 without any custom kernels or tweaks. Looks like the issue is back, any idea what might be wrong? I hope it has nothing to do with the physical battery itself because that would be a pain. Other than this, the day to day battery life of the tablet and stability is pretty good.
BUMP
No one really? Im sure there are people who experienced this before.
My wife's phone does something very similar. Crashes, heats up and when she gets it back on the battery has taken an absolute hammering. Luckily it occurs only rarely and it appears that there are no long term consequences.
Cheers Danny

What phone is she using? Is it rooted?
Anyway I think i figured out why, i happened to notice it by chance. After full charge, i plug it out and notice the screen is actually turned on even though the device isnt! The screen is just showing a plain blank screen, but you can tell its turned on, by looking at an angle. I had to manually force a shut down by holding the power button before it goes off, then the tablet automatically switches on. It seems that it only happens when i charge the tablet while its switched off, I wonder if it has anything to do with the bootloader (Im on 4.2.1) or the charger itself.
Galaxy s2 rooted, does not appear to be rom or kernel specific as it occurs with different combinations. Anyway good news you have at least identified the problem.
Cheers Danny
Sounds like it never charged. Why turn it off to charge it? Airplane mode is just as good.

If thats the case have you tried re-calibrating the battery? Sounds like its pretty messed up, thats what i'd do.

It did charge because when i turned it back on it showed as 95%, the first 5% was drained because the screen was left "on" the whole time. I am beginning to suspect it is the case I use with the tablet. Its similar to those smart cases on the iPad where the screen auto ons/off when you flip or close the cover. I notice that even during the process of shutting the tablet down the flap still affects the screen off/on when i close it. A potential way of screwing up stuff. Next time I charge it turned off, I'll try removing the case entirely and see what happens.
Alright this time I turned the tablet off and left it to charge over night WITHOUT the casing and now it's working fine. No screen on or any heat whatsoever.

Why are you turning it off to charge? Just plug it in and be done with it. I never turn any of my devices off - the only time my S2 has been off is to reboot to flash a new ROM. Never have any charging issues.

Its just a habit i guess, and i always have the mentality that it makes a difference charging it while off
And its also good to reboot your phone once in a while, I usually do it once every 24 hours of use. Y'know, to flush out the RAM and OS so it can start anew. :highfive:

nexus 4 won't turn on. stock

having had my phone for about a week so far. been having great experience with it. then BAM! The phone just won't turn on anymore. looks like its completely dead. i mean literally dead. no led light flashing. holding down power button doesnt work either. what should I do now? contact google? is it a defect phone? There was no rooting no flashing. phone is completely stock. and no physical damage at all.
waited 2 month for something like this. I am really helpless and disappointed!
For how long did you hold down the power button?
I had the same issue with the nexus 7 and I fixed it by holding down the power button for 30 seconds or more...
Use an AC power socket and leave it charge for hours. Then try again. Then RMA is its still not coming on.

thanks guys. I managed to turn it back on. but what could have triggered this shutdown? there was no notification whatsoever. if the battery dies there should have been a notification or something right? could there be anything wrong with the phone?

I had a similar issue with mine about two weeks ago and again twice today. 2 weeks ago and today, the phone was on the charger and seemed to go into a deep freeze. My alarms didn't go off as scheduled, and I was only able to turn the phone back on with a very long pressing of the power button. Then just a few minutes ago, I noticed my phone was unresponsive and had to do the same thing.
The phone is not rooted, and the battery was not dead during any of these episodes. In fact, it was on the charger overnight the first two times.
I'll probably call customer support tomorrow.

I just got mine yesterday, got it all setup. awesome. Put it on the charger overnight, with an alarm set....woke up just before my alarm to a phone in deep freeze...long power press (over 30sec) and then tried to turn on regular, and it worked fine.
Is this a defect, or just quirk..
This happens to my phone too but once. My nexus 7 keeps on doing it randomly.. But I had to hold my power button pass a minute..

I haven't seen this... I haven't tried games yet on nexus 4, but on my Evo LTE it got quite warm with games... maybe wait till it's cooled down and try again. What game is it...maybe it's poorly programmed and uninstalling would help most...

yes at first the newely installed games like muffin knight and other umpopular games... but now even my game blood and glory(whos i installed from the first day i had my n4) also causes freeze in my phone .. it happened to me 4x now and i really dont know what to do ... maybe its already a hardqare failure since my b and g caused freeze ..
Volume UP + Power button for less then 5 seconds solved the problem for me.
