Now I have installed a ROM based on the official update (paul @ modaco's recommended repack).
But what's new???
I see that there are small, incremental improvements here and there, but overall I'm a bit disappointed at the lack of changes/improvements. It's all business as usual.
What's more, it turns out that Google Maps Navigation (the feature I was most looking forward to with the update) is not available in Australia so I can't use it after all.
There's also no voice searching like there is on other phones on 2.1. I tried installing a google voice search APK someone had floating around but it didn't work.
The improved Market app is nice, though I still can't filter or sort entries the way I'd want (how to sort by star rating and filter out anything containing the term 'soundboard'?)
Can anyone suggest some cool new things I can do with my new 2.1 based Hero?
Basically you can install lots more apps. But not much more. That's why I revert to stock because it's perfect
I think you can install an additional Maps apk (i think I have seen one some time ago, must be somewhere on my sd card), then you had 2 Maps entries in your program list, one of them did navigate, even if official navigation was not yet available.
Not sure if that still works though

Be patient, Google Maps Navigation and Google Voice Search are available in Germany and other European Countries since today, I guess, they will come soon also down under With 1.5 you'll never see them on the market ...

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA
That should be HTC's slogan FFS.
You can look for Brut.all maps somewhere in xda - they contain navigation everywhere in the world I think.
I've since read about Gallery 3D and live wallpapers. And voice integration in the keyboard. Again, not on HTC's official 2.1. Um... so HTC's customers just miss out?
I guess I could try waiting for the world wide english ROM. But I doubt it'd be something they'd have specifically removed just for the Taiwan ROM (would they?).
My other option is moving to a vanilla (AOSP perhaps) ROM. But then I'd miss the HTC features that are good like HTC mail, Peep, etc.
Anyway, I doubt I'm the first person to have grumped about this, you've probably heard it all before.

Firstly Gallery3d is an aosp thing i think, Its from eclair (Vanilla 2.1) Live wallpapers are not made for our hero,Mainly for HTC Phones using a snapdragon CPU so we wont get those.....Maybe if you had come from the raw 1.5 sense build to 2.1 Sense you would notice the difference?
Having running 2.1 for a while before the update is released will put a downer on the official update..
Oh and now we have no green camera issue
I was happy with 1.5 but I've installed VillainRom 10 and it's a nice update. Nothing spectacular but it just feels a bit more fluid and snappy. The camera surprised me: it seems a lot quicker and has more options.

There are some things some people have been really looking forward too, so they might be happy. But this is why people like me and others have been saying for a long time that the whole 'HTC-hate-thing-when-is-the-updating-coming' is very stupid, because in the end... it's just an Hero ROM!
Still, to be complete, some (new) things people might've been waiting for:
They got access to apps that were missing from the Market on <= 1.5
Bluetooth file transfer (and maybe other missing profiles?)
Google Navigation / Buzz / or other new Google additions 'only for 2.x'
Faster camera app
Newer (optimzed / faster) official Sense build.
People expecting Gallery3d, livewallpapers, Friendstream, etc... they just don't realize they have an Hero... a device that was already outdated when it came out, let alone a year later.

I was running stock sense 1.5 on it previously. Just rooted, no modifications.

It's no 2.2, but still I feel that's a considerable Update.
Yes there are small updates here and there which make the experience better. Things like App Update notifications, nice fullscreen weather animations, more widgets, like Power controls, better camera, more setting options etc.
One of the most considerable advantages over 1.5 is app support. Apps which were coded for 2.1 are now visible and available. What's more Hero was the biggest factor in developers developing for min. version 1.5, as there are lots of Heros around. Now it's 2.1 all the way.
Other things of the top of my head: better Exchange, better faster browser, better Contacts manager, Voice integration and most certainly alt of under the hood improvements.
P.S. Use brut maps for navigation, as someone already said.
Biggest thing for me is probably Bluetooth, actually being able to send files, photos, music to another phone is something I have been missing a great deal.

Thanks to both of you for the tip about Brut Maps. It works
I've just flashed VanillaEclair and am enjoying it.
Looks like HTC's Sense stuff doesn't really evolve all that much across Android versions, whereas they've updated a bit more of the non-Sense stuff (much of which people with phones other than the Hero already had).
At the moment I'm feeling a little that I don't want to be held back by HTC Sense, hence giving a Vanilla ROM a spin.
Ok so here goes i'm thinking of working on a NAND ROM based on 2.3.1 (Gingerbread) Build: GRH78 FOR THE HTC HD2...but guess what...... i'm gonna try and throw HTC SENSE into the mix and see if i can get them to play nicely together....since this could take some time i just wanted to know if anyone is interested at all???? Just Post and ask if your interested......this ROM is going to based off ofMDJ's CyanogenMod 7 v. 2.3 with MDJ's Kernel: MDJ S10.3 OC (or whatever new Kernal MDJ releases between now and when i get this rom complete) and the Desire HD Sense including the Sense Camera...(THESE ARE MY GOALS FOR THIS ROM)I Will Be Posting Frequently Since I Will Need Testers to find all the little bugs that i miss....
( I WILL ONLY POST ROMS THAT I THINK ARE SAFE...BUT THERE IS THE CHANCE THAT IT STILL CAN BE BRICKED SO BY FLASHING MY ROM YOU KNOW THAT YOUR VOIDING YOUR WARRANTY AND I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BRICK YOUR DEVICE )
EDIT: Im Gonna Try My Hardest to have a Version posted so everyone can play with it by 01/15/2011 - 01/16/2011....
EDIT: I just sent a message to cortulla....mainly if he has any tips or tricks that might help out with this build....01/14/2011
EDIT: Ok I'm sorry for not posting for so long i haven't forgot about you guys...i'm still working on this rom..its harder than anticipated...plus having the free time to do it gets tricky...work is having mandatory overtime since the iphone is being released on verizon...(SCARED MUCH AT&T????)..SO JUST WANTED TO UPDATE AND SAY I DIDN'T DITCH THIS PROJECT.......02/03/2011
Thanks Everyone and remember we couldn't do any of this if it wasn't for Google, Cyanogen, Cotulla & (DFT), MDJ, Markinus, gauner1986, danij3l, gpc, LeTama, Rajko and others...and if i forgot to mention you im sorry just yell at me and i'll be sure to add you to the list =-)....

Also very interested...
And I'd like to be a beta tester.
Totally interested in this. Gingerbread has come along a great length in the last copuple of days. Latest stock release dated the 14th shows working lights and usb! Would be awsome to have sense built on top!
Please work on it man
Good luck. It's almost impossible; most of sense is dependant on the HTC framework and most libraries, which are in turn interdependent with the android version they run on (2.2). You pretty much have to replace the whole build with 2.2, which, in effect, makes the build a 2.2.
It would be easier to add to 2.2 the keyboard and animations from Gingerbread, along with the launcher. It's close, but it's not really 2.3 either.
Good luck anyway.
for me it's enough to have the desire hd cam on gingerbread. will it ever be possible to provide only the hd cam tool?

+1.
It's hardly possible to get sense rosie.apk (the launcher) working on stock android... (afaik nobody has done it to date)
plus I bet its impossible to do it on a different android version.
Yet I would be interested.

Why?
Use Camera 360 or a similar app. They do the same (may look worse but who cares?)
(maybe no facial recognition - yet do you really need that?)
it seems to me that Gingerbread mostly enhanced aosp anyways, it tweaked the UI and didn't really have that many enhancements.
If you could just port the Gingerbread keyboard, icon set, Nexus S LWPs, and the screen-off animation to a Sense build then you basically have it.
(may look worse but who cares?)

yep, and that's exactly what i want: a good looking camera app. technically i'm satisfied with the gingerbread cam, but it looks awful in compare to hd cam app...
I'm dreaming of it !!!

I'd love to give sense a try on Gingerbread!
2.2 Sense ?
Sense HD would be cool but I imagine more work
I'll look forward to it !

sure man it will be revolutionary start .... good luck ...
Absolutely impossible. You need a HTC leaked ruu I tell you that. Unless you are a fremework wiz. If you are, 10-90 chance. Good luck. You may make history with it.

My friend got the Samsung Galaxy S2, and I got to play with it. I can say that i absolutely LOVE TouchWiz 4.0. So if any of the great devs on XDA are reading this, can you make a TouchWiz 4 port for the HTC HD2? Because i tried touchwiz 3 and it was not as good as 4, by a long shot. And if there isn't a port planned for development, can anyone link me to an APK or launcher?

Surely it will be less buggy than an interface for a far more different phone?
i'm pretty sure someone is able to port
Check out the MIUI ROMs they have some of the TouchWiz incorporated into the ROMs.
TouchWiz 4.0 is already ported to Galaxy Tab:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1077641
Can someone try to port it for HD2?
Might I ask what about touchwiz you like? If it's in functionality, then sense, or any other rom as a matter of fact, offers the same.
I like how it looks like (almost like MIUI) and TW 4.0 has useful gesture support.
Sense 3.0 has only nice lockscreen, nothing else has changed since times of Desire.
And I really want to try that, cause SGS2 is to expensive for me...
I think the gesture controls need a gyroscrope also to work since they don't work with my cappy running tw4. Which the hd2 doesn't have or any other phone other than the age 2.

Obviously this is a beta version of the upcoming samsung official ICS release for S2, it looks like a total catastrophe with TouchWiz..it looks NOTHING like beautiful Nexus Interface.
If it will look anything remotly similiar on the GNOTE it would be catastrophic..
Yeah agree. If the final looks like this i'm gonna flash vanilla ICS.. Well, i'll probably flash that either way.

yes this is total dissapointment, all people expect a total new UI, and what we get is something that looks identlical to the interface we have right now... it does not look like ICS at all... looks more like gingerbread... what are Samsung thinking drop the TouchWiz crap, TouchWiz has played out it's roll... it feels like windows 7 but with the xp GUI...
We should send a protest list or something to samsung cause this looks like a total nightmare...all people expect the brilliance of the Nexus GUI.. but this looks even worse then I could imagine.
Long live cm9!!

I wouldn't mind vanilla ICS, but there'd better be a way to turn off the on-screen soft keys on phones that have hardware ones. Also, I can't stand having to reach all the way to the top of the phone for anything but notifications. The menu button at the bottom better continue to work the same.
The vanilla runs well on the fassy. Same stuff new version.

I think the phone will look odd with ICS anyway. You will have two rows of redundant keys, even though one may be not working.

To some one who have not used android before, can you explain to me what you mean with Vanilla ICS ????
You mean it will be possible to root with the standard ICS interface ?
Will the performance be as good as the official or will be lagging and buggs etc ?
Anyway, why it look so similar to todays gingerbread is maybe cause samsung are doing an half-hearted upgrade..
they have promised us ICS.. but they only seem to put small amount of energy to make a big update...
the interface looks identical etc.. Why I wanted ICS was cause it is basically a totally new OS...compared to gingerbread.

Stock Android. The way Google had intended it to look, feel, and perform.
This is unbelievably disappointing. I'm still glad I have my S2, because of the ASOP rom currently under development. I'll most definitely switch between phones whenever I want and just store any content that matters on an SD card, so my phone is virtually hot-swappable between devices.

Yes I understand that, but there will be no official version cause the stock version most be modified to be able to work with GNOTE ???
I just wonder if it is possible to port the ICS to GNOTE without any glitches and performance loss... how does past vanilla versions works for other phones ?

It depends on developer support. If the devs for CM9 can port it to the Note, than only then can we expect a (hopefully) fully functional ICS rom on the Note.
As it stands, Google only releases official vanilla roms to their Nexus line of phones, and they release the source for other manufacturers/devs to port to other phones.
I hope that answers your question mate, the way it was worded was a bit difficult to fully understand.

Well official as in with 'nothing' on it, no carrier or vendor tweaks/applications added and in this case, things like Touchwiz.
Also ICS was launched with Galaxy Nexus not Galaxy Note, but regardless I would presume that Samsung or another developer on XDA or any other forum will create a port to the Galaxy Note.
Vanilla just means that it doesn't have the other unnecessary stuff loaded e.g. Touchwiz. Vanilla is always compiled directly from AOSP source.
Why is everyone so angry about samsung including touchwiz into the ICS rom (I assume that's what this discussion is about?). Isn't the best thing about android the incredible ease of installing another launcher? Shouldn't the stock launcher just be a .apk away?

Well it's true what you said, but Samsung will skin almost everything.
The phone, browser, music player....all of them will be skinned with TW & I guess people in this thread (me include) prefer the stock ICS look and feel.
atm i looks not really nice, but! it is an internal beta, maybe even a alpha version, nobody knows if samsungs is just trying and looking if touchwiz is working under ics, i'm sure that they will make some more cosmetics for ics.
Dunno but no on saw the video? Didn't you something wrong or better few things that where not as expected on it? First the phone had a yellow triangle meaning Samsung had a problem flashing a non stock Rom on the phone. Second on the *#1234# if you not 100% eye sight old man here the csc is unknown.......... . Third the keys back and menu keys aren't functionally at all, only if they had the drivers for them to implant on csc so they could work. Fourth the browser not sure was on xda forums when he started? Or did I see wrong or now I know they where looking xda forum for a working csc file to make the buttons work.
And about touchwiz give me ics on note even with a touch I don't care, so someday the devs can make a custom Rom, on our needs. But they need to have something to play with and take some codes/ideas from the custom files.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
Wow.. that is disappointing... i thought i could just flash back the stock rom when ICS is out. Now looks like I'm going to stay rooted for good.
I know theres a new voice recognition on Jellybean thats supposed to be much better and more fluid. I havent noticed any improvement in the phone recognition on my phone which is running gingerbread. So does that mean that unless we update to jellybean we will have the bad voice recognition? is there anyway to get the updated one on gingerbread?
There are jellybean roms in development wich are gettin more stable at the time of writing. Mabye you could flash one now or when they get more stable? As for getting it on gingerbread I don't know if any dev can port it.
