[Problems & Questions] With Official 2.3 Update V2 - Huawei Ideos X5 U8800

Hello !
I am feeling really down today after been trying to get my phone working again.
There is a huge problem currently, I am really annoyed that it doesn't work at all.
First thing, my phone won't start after update it just boot loops and never seem to end it.
First thing I noticed /boot, /cache /system and most things are gone, I can load up recovery but nothing more. I have no idea what happened but the whole image folder was wiped and I had to myself put in the CWM recovery.
I can't do an upgrade "again" as it will be stuck @ the unpacking part without starting it at all.
I been trying with 2.3 V2 and with B133(My stock rom I got).
If anyone has a solution that can solve this problem please help out if you could. Also if you are about to tell me get this and that, please most cases I haven't seen any of the Firmware roms in @modaco wiki links work. Means I can't download them, so if you happen to have spare copy please upload it and link it to me. I have been googling and looking through this section twice, nothing really worked out.
Thanks in advance !

If you didn't erase the .cust_backup partition which contain the image folder with all system' s .img files, then maybe it' s damaged. I had some problems with this partition before and when I checked it with windows check disk it repairs it and I had no problems from then. So, try this, and if you still haven' t any file on image folder, you can find the original folder on X5' s forums. Is definately here, but I don't remember where is the link and I don't gonna search it for you. If you cannot find it, you can allways reflash the original rom. If you fix the partition(if this is the problem), I don't think that you'll have problems with update any more.

Hello, thanks for the reply.
I have no idea about this .cust_backup partition and how I am supposedly to access it via windows. Also the thing you said about fixing partition within Windows, the check disk thing. I am not sure about that part either as I can load CWM and it can read the partitions but they are empty. Also there is nothing in this forums that contains original things, only way for me to fix this if someone have extra copy and can guide me on how and where to place the all needed files. I am pretty sure it's only things that are missing and I can't get a grip out of this.
So to sum up what my problem is.
I did an upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3 with official firmware, it worked out normally but after a reboot my phone became stuck in an endless loop, I can't do anything and it will not I repeat it will not allow me to "re flash" any firmware I tried so far, the 2.3 V2 and B133.
I am begging someone in this forum section, please if you have the knowledge about this problem care to help?
I can't get a refund out the phone warrenty is off and I do not have that much spare money.
Thanks in advance !

If you can get to recovery, wipe cache and data. It should be possible in stock recovery.
The cust partition has all the images for bootloader, recovery etc. You can get to it with the pink screen. Reformatting and then reinserting the images and files could help, but try that when nothing else works.
I can't give you good help via phone, but try wiping data first. Also, try if you can use some other sd card.

The most common things I have already done, but do enlighten me what this "custom" parition is. Because in windows I do not see such partition I see a removable partition which I have now added a folder called image with these containing files.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1370960
EDIT ** Also regarding to first person who said about Windows partition manager. The thing is I see a lot of partitions and there is no labeling for them, might be because they are ext2/3 or even something else? In anycase I can't do so much I just find it really odd I have many duplicates and I am guessing that must be errors... Because I am seeing the main recovery partition which has no label too... its at 240 MB where 135MB is used. Lastly there is my internal SD card empty and healthy still I can't reach it within Windows if I do not mount it...And can't now without going into the android OS. I Have loads of free space "partitions I don't understand why they are there".
**
Thanks for helping out, it feels not good to have a half dead phone, it's still not solved :'-(

The .cust_backup is the mount point on android for this removable partition with image folder. In windows haven' t this name. I didn't mean to use the windows partition manager, just to use windows explorer, right click on the partition and choose properties, then tools and then check disk. Of course you can use partition manager too, but because as you found there are all no labeled other partitions there and is a bit confused.
As you mentioned, you found the original image folder and you replaced the files. Did you tried to do the update again after that?
Also you can see and the internal sd partiton, but you need linux system. This partition is not fat32, so windows cannot see it.

I have placed all things that I got from here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1370960
And I can't run the upgrade firmware, it gets stuck at first stage which is to unpack the the update.app thing.
It just stays like that not blinking and frozen.

Did you tried now that you have the original files, to go to recovery mode and wipe data etc?
Also when you try to do the upgrade do you have the device connected with the cable?
I had this problem once and I think that when I disconnected the cable(or maybe wasn' t connected and I connected it, I don't remember well), the proccess bar starts to moving after a while and the upgrade completed successfully.

You are not understanding me :-(, I have wiped already millions of times in millions of different ways just to get it work. And no, I don't have the device connrected when I upgrade, it won't work properly then, I have tried to wait for the progress bar to "start" move it won't happen the battery will die, and nothing happened.
I can't go in with normal Recovery mode, can only go in with CWM, the normal recovery mode is really small, I mean only 3mb, while the froyo version is 5mb. Now I am asking if you have the time to upload the image files from 2.3 V2, the ones in forums are for V1. Which I don't know might conflict.
Thanks again for trying to help me out, this is really frustrating to get it to work.
**EDIT**
I worked it out !
I think I understood what you meant, I did as you told I started first with pluggin in the charger forced it to upgrade and now it's upgrading, thank you so much dancer_69. I was going to go tomorrow to buy a new 2nd hand smartphone. But now I can save my money for other things !
**EDIT of EDIT **
I seem to have downgraded to B133, I will try now with B158 2.3 V2 again and hopefully it will work now.

Yes, wasn't clear because I don' t remember what I've done and solve it. But I think that I did it like you discribed too.
Anyway I'm glad that was helpful(kind of)..
And don' t give up so soon with smartphone' s bricks, I've faced brick kind of problems many times and if the device it' s not completely dead, there is something you can do. Maybe need more search or many tries(sometimes the same things) but at the end(and of course If there isn't a hardware problem) device can unbrick.

[Q] Motorola Flipout rooted. How to apps2sd?

The Motorola Flipout is fairly easy to root, at least now. Universal Androot (get it here) works.
I am thinking about moving apps to the sd card. However, since I haven't reflashed the phone, and I don't have a ROM for it, I'd like to do it without reflashing. Is that possible?
If I partition an SD card correctly (ext3), copy all of /data onto that partition, and then mount that partition over /data, will that work? Or do I have to mount the card before the phone boots?
Or is it better to just copy /data/data, and mount the partition over /data/data?
It seems to me that mounting over a directory, as opposed to creating a link is least invasive, because on reboot the phone is as it was before. Is this right?
If I have to mount the sdcard before the phone boots, can I just edit one of the init scripts, or is that more complicated? I read about editing init.rc and repacking boot.img
Oh, HOWTO unpack edit and repack boot images seems to give good instructions. On the Flipout, boot is mtd4, and recovery is mtd5.
If I only modify boot, I can't brick my phone too badly? Since I haven't changed recovery, I should be able to recover (?). Can I create an update.zip that flashes the old boot.img and undoes my changes in case something goes wrong?
I just got the flipout from rogers.. Is there anyplace that has a development forum for it? And does it have the efuse ? If it does, is it possible to do what was done with the droid X to it?
How did go so far ghostwheel? I'm eager to hear what else you have figured out.
You use App2Card.apk at below for app2sd without flash:
http://www.tinhte.vn/f280/app2card-2-4-4-20-9-cai-dat-ung-dung-len-nho-phan-vung-456586/
Requires: just a rooted phone
Steps:
- install app
- click Menu / Partition button then use slide bars to create ext2 for your sd card if it hasn't been splited yet
- click Install App2card button
- phone will be rebooted and you just taste app on sd after then
Note: above page has further instruction but it is vietnamese, you must use google translate to get it. This app runs perfectly on my Milestone.

Hi,
I'd really like to help with that (I'm a confirm dev. for Cliq and CliqXT phones).
Hopefully we can do great things like we did for Cliq and CLiqXT (upgrade to 2.1!). (check my work at http://bit.ly/adlxmod).
First thing would be to generate a system dump (a dump of all the files in the /system partition). Hopefully we then could generate a custom recovery to flash on the phone, and then custom roms, either base on the dump you provide or other roms from other files. Contact me on twitter @adumont (say it's for Flipout) and I'll guide you to generate the dump!
Looking forward to do great things for that litle phone!
I'm in touch with adlxdum to give him my dump but I think we should start a separated thread like "Custom rom, modding (work in progress)" so that we can follow adlxdum work.
And...thx in advance ;-)

Worked!
I couldn't repartition the SD card with the program, so I had to partition it myself. But once that was done, thing seem to work well. A bit slower...
I'm not totally sure how to use the app. Internal seems to still be full, but ext2 on the SD is quite empty. I can't seem to be able to tell if an app is installed to internal or external.
I have to try and install some more apps to see if I run out of memory.
Thanks!!
I'm guessing the flipout and charm are almost identical phones?
My wife has a charm and i'm one of those "i'm not a developer, but I'd like to help" guys.

Yes, I think they are very similar.
One thing that I'm interested in is the accelerometer. On the Flipout, most apps that use it are twisted - for example wikitude, and many games (labyrinth lite works!) I wonder if things work on the charm...
the charm has the same issue.

Hi ghostwheel
I've tried installing app2card, but I'm having some problems. I got the new version 2.7.2.
As you said, the partition doesnt work. For me it says sd card is full but its empty...
How did you manually partition it?
I've found some tutorials but it was for other phones and they required a custom rom...
I partitioned the card using a linux computer, with the program fdisk.
I allocated 2GB to a partition of type ext2. But, I think there are many alternatives for partitioning a disk, see this page:
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f9/how-to-create-ext2-partition-14232/
Wow great link! Many different options! Will try this as soon as I get a micro sd card adapter. Thanks!
You mentioned in your old post that you were having problems using app2card, That you weren't sure if it was working. Have you been able to use it since? Is it working well? and if not have you found an alternative?
I just started using this phone and I'm almost running out of memory... this is quite annoying!

Yes, I was having problems. Mainly when restarting the phone, sometimes oodles of apps don't work, including launcher pro, and app2card. You have to remember that when the phone reboots and seems to have FC problems, don't chose any home screen as the default, in case it crashes, and keep a spare app2card to reinstall on the sdcard. I think "severe" problems I had only twice, or so.
So, I have almost no problems. Most of the time it works really well. So well, in fact, that I'm a bit afraid to upgrade it, in case something breaks. And, I totally forgot what it is like to have to delete apps to install another one.
I have more of the opposite problem - finding an app among all those installed takes a realllly long time if you forgot its name. Apps organizer helps.
hello, i am new and i have flipout to test in poland orange network, i just root him using 1st post in this forum, great job! thanks
OK, I am having some problems with the current version of app2card. As I said, sometimes when I turn the device off and back on, app2card fails, and many apps give a FC which starting. Then one needs to fix the apps from app2card. It seems that once that is done, some apps lose some of their data. So, for example, droidwall (excellent program!!), lost all firewall data. I'll have to check if newer versions of app2card don't have this problem. It doesn't happen very often.
Instructions to root Flipout
Hi - I'd consider myself a newbie regarding rooting. I just got the AT&T Flipout - I really like the form factor. I just tried running the Universal Androot from my phone but got the security warning message about only being able to install from trusted sources.
Can someone point me in the right direction please?
Many thanks!
it says that with a lot of apps installed like that, including gmote that I downloaded from the developers site. Just look at what you're downloading like you would on any machine
go to settings > Application and tick on unknown sources to be able to install it.

Cant boot anymore

Hi folks, i'm looking for 2 days a way to solve my DHD problem:
It can't boot anymore. It pop up the "htc quietly brilliant" screen, play the boot sound and, start this step again, and again, and again...
So I'm googling a LOT about how to solve this, if exist a way to restore the original rom. Because i'm thinking that was the problem, my original rom is gone.
That happens when i try to install 3 softwares from appbrain, my device got freeze and i hit the power button to reset. So, after that, my device is gone.
So i came here, to ask you folks: There is a way to recover the original rom ? Without send to warranty (because it spend something like 1 month here).
I'm not a mobile hacker or something, i'm just trying to be happy with my device.
Thanks a lot and sorry for my poor english!!
Perhaps try booting to the bootloader, by holding Power + Volume down button. From there, you should be able to do a factory reset, which may or may not fix your problem. Worth a shot at least, imo
And if it does not work when you do a factory reset, you can use a rom.zip from HTC RUU to restore your phone.
Now the important thing is to know which HTC rom you are running. If it is unbranded, 1.72.405.3 is a sure shot. Download the RUU.exe from Stock roms thread in android development subforum, and run it. When the window pops up, open run prompt, and type: "%TEMP%". Then search for rom.zip, copy it to your desktop, rename it to PD98IMG.zip and put it to your SD card (I hope that you have a card reader). Then just reboot to bootloader as tmh described, and watch the magic happen
Then if your phone is branded, you can still use the same technique to make PD98IMG.zip, but you have to get the RUU that matches your branding. There are lots of RUUs in android development subforum, just search.
Hi guys,
thanks a lot for quik reply!
I perform the procedure indicated by tmh, but without lucky ;\
I think it is unbranded. I buy it at Portugal and i'm using at Brazil right now.
I'll perform your tip jkoljo.
I'll post a repply to let people know if it works or not.
Thanks a lot!!
Hope the advice the last guy gave helps , a factory re set may work fine and fix the issue. Iv had 3 dhd since the day of release , the second one I had wouldn't switch on, had it replaced by Vodafone . Not sure weather or not they will give you a new one . Hope u get it fixed

the different is just the radio version. just try flash one of them and see if that work.
WWE means World Wide English, which is an international release

Sorry ask for your help again, but at Official thread (thread number 841207) for DHD files, both 1.72.405.3 links are broken.
So i search for another thread, and found another one, but when i run the .exe, it ask for a USB connection to device, so it appears wrong.
Could you gimme a hand to find the correct file?
PS: I can help with a web hosting to all correct files.
You probably found the correct RUU, now proceed to %TEMP% and copy rom.zip to desktop.
You can find RUUs here: http://xdafil.es/index.php?path=DesireHD/RUU/
I am not completely sure if those zip files are actual rom.zips, you can check that. Open up the zip, and if it has a long list of hboot, system, android-info.txt etc, then it is rom.zip and you can just go ahead and rename it to PD98IMG.zip.

But i did that.
The "1.72.405.3" files at this URL are broken (Or need password to access it, because "You don't have permission to access" message pop up).
When i run the RRU i got two screens, first i must accept a advice, the second one ask if I have a USB connection to my device. Even when i proceed to next step, i got no .zip file on my %TEMP%.
Im lost because of that lol
UPDATE: OK I FOUND IT! haha ty
Thanks a lot my friends,
but it doesn't work.
I perform the process for 2 different roms, and it doesn't work.
Still can't boot.
I'll sent for warranty and wait a loooong time..

Ok, then there is something wrong in the device itself. You have to send it to a service center.

Hi again,
i keep a little hope that i can restore my phone, so i found a possible solution:
OTA update.
At "showthread.php?t=667728&page=2", i found a guy with the same problem i think, here is the quote:
Kinma said:
I had the same problem last week.
I suspected it had to do with the EXT3 partition.
Solved it by first flashing the OTA 2.2 ROM (for rooted users) as this does not use the EXT3. Then used Rom manager to recreate the EXT3.
Now all ROMs that use the EXT3 run fine!

So, i start a search for OTA update file here, and found at "showthread.php?t=885996".
But when i choose "Apply sdcard:update.zip", i got INVALID OPERATION.
Someone have a tip for me about this?
Thanks (its very sad, but i must keep hope).

You are welcome.
What happened was that after a reboot of the phone the phone started rebooting in the boot sequence, i.e. a boot loop.
I tried a lot of things and nothing worked.
Finally I suspected that the problem might be with the SD card. I had a backup, so I had no problem doing a factory reset.
Then I booted the phone without the SD card.
The phone booted fine.
That way I was certain that the problem was with the SD card.
I had 2 partitions on the SD card, an EXT3 part and the rest was a normal Fat part.
I could still read the card, so I made a backup of all the data on the card.
Then I reformatted the card using windows.
The phone booted fine with an empty, reformatted, SD card.
Since I use Apps 2 SD, I had to recreate the EXT3 partition.
If your rom does not use this, you do not have to do this.
After recreating the EXT partition, put back all files that I want on my SD card.
My advice would be to do a factory reset and after that boot the phone without the SD card.
If the phone boots, you know the problem is with the card.
Hope that helps; good luck!

Hi folks,
boot without the SD card, doesn't work =(
I'm really without luck with this.
I do:
- Factory reset
- Clear cache and userdata
- Boot without SD or/and SIM cards
- Reflash RUU WWE 1.72.405.3 Radio 26.04.02.17_M2
- Reflash RRU WWE 1.72.405.3 Radio 26.04.02.17_M2 SF
- erase all SD
One show was use OTA update.zip, but at this step i got "invalid operation"
SO, nothing works!
Well, it appears a lost battle =\
thanks folks for all help.
Yeah, there must be something wrong in your device itself, for example a motherboard fault. Send it back to HTC.

i saw that NO ONE else has reported this issue anywhere on the net!!
it can't be a hardware problem cause it was working before i formatted all of those folders! including the ones with the 3 character names... can't remember the names... but basically i formatted everything...
this is a common problem when you format / partition the internal memory. it screws up your PDS partition, which i hope you backed up. search a little more, there are lots of topics on this in the dev forum and I believe there MAY be a solution but i don't remember.
Just found a couple of threads...
I didn't back it up... does this mean that my Motorola atrix is practically worthless now? :s
Solution

this apparently is supposed to work... will try it in a bit.
but still, you won't get the original mac address and bluetooth number and the rest...
:/ sad times... there must be someway to acquire the original values?!?!

i'm not sure there are, as those values were never meant to be cleared out.
can ask why you decided to format every folder in the memory?

Well, if you look in the post i linked to, it is an image that i pushed into the partition...
it's working now at least!
I do have my mac address and IMEI, do you know how i can edit that image file to put my own values in it? i have no clue as to how the image can be edited.... :/
the reason i did that was because i had an HTC HD2 before. it originally comes with windows, and so when you installed Android, it had a horrible process... in that process, the MAGLDR and CWR as they were called, did not erase every folder in the phone's main memory... so i had gotten used to formatting them individually in that phone.. that's why i did it on the Atrix...
also, in the HD2 they were folders not partitions... so basically, i wasn't familiar with the exact core of Motorola android devices...
there must be a way to put in my own hardware details into the PDS image file?

[Q] Boot loop, unable to reach recovery, bootloader strange, Oxygen

Hello, I've spent several hours searching a solution for this problem, both on this forum as well as others. But still unable to find one I try my luck here.
This is the case:
U8800 bought in Sweden a couple of weeks ago. Installed SuperBoot r1 and CWM 4.0.0.5 Perfect Recovery from XDA forums. Installed Oxygen 2.2.2 r4, worked fine until yesterday. When it got stock at the screen lock. Pulled battery and then it was stuck in a boot loop showing only the IDEOS-logo. Tried to get into recovery with Vol+ and power. But still only gets to IDEOS-logo and then reboot after about 10 seconds.
I'm able to get into bootloader (pink-screen) by Vol+, Vol- and Power. Have tried to replace boot.img and recovery.img with others (original backup, CWM 5.0.2.3) in both Ubuntu 11.10 and Win 7). But still unable to reach recovery. And next time I start bootloader and check it's still the same boot.img and recovery.img as it was before I replaced them.
Seems like I'm unable to write to image folder somehow. It looks good when I disconnect it from the computer. Have tried "safe removal" in both Ubuntu and Windows, no difference. Also tried to rename the files to boot_backup.img and recovery_backup.img and then put the new files in there. But next time I start bootloader they are once again restored to how they were before (same file size as before) and the renamed files doesn't exists any more.
Have also tried to install B136 stock ROM via bootloader, looked good at first but when it was finished it said "Installation failed" (or something similar)...
Read somewhere modding the build.prop could cause boot loops, but I haven't touched that and therefore doesn't have any backup of it either.
Any ideas?
Yep, it looks like your bootloader may be corrupt...Do the following:
Boot the phone in Bootloader (pink screen) by pressing Vol+, Vol- and Power and connect the USB cable. Copy all the files you can find on that partition (this will be your backup) and format the partition with FAT32 file system, create a folder named "image" and copy the following files on there.
EMMCBOOT - http://www.mediafire.com/?lb6ifvgk72iru4a
AMSS.MBN - http://www.mediafire.com/?d6r45q6p5gew59v
Recovery.img - http://www.mediafire.com/?57njygc8oianjac
Boot.img - http://www.mediafire.com/?6d5i0714a7o9z97
Once you've done this, take the battery out and boot into Recovery and flash a new Rom (VOL+ and Power.)
Let me know how this goes...
Thank you very much for your help!
However when I try to format the partition windows says it couldn't complete the format. Tried both to right click > format and disk management > format. FAT32/std fast format as well as regular/slow. Neither work. If I do a regular format it goes at normal rate up to 100% and then says the disk isn't formatted...
I don't know if I dare to remove the partition and make a new in disk management, feels like I would screw something else up then?
Any tips?
Have tried to format in Ubuntu 11.10 as well, with the standard tool it didn't complain, but it didn't format it either. Installed GParted and tried that, it did seem to work and said it had successfully formatted it. But yet the image-folder still remains on the boot partition...
Run a systemcheck with the disk management in Ubuntu and it said the file system was OK.
I'm almost out of ideas now...
I don't think you're actually formatting the drive as the "image" folder should be gone once the format is done.
Try using a windows PC, I know that Gparted and Ubuntu can be a bit tricky sometimes...
Also, you've definitely installed the drivers for the cable?
On Windows 7 the drivers are being automatically installed, so maybe you should try that...
I've tried Windows 7 several times (the only Windows I use). It's very weird the files just wont go away. I have taken Shift+Del on the image folder several times and they are removed just as any other files on the computer. Then the next time I connect it the very same files (58 MB) are back! When I do a format the computer shows the disk empty, but when the error window comes up the files are back... In ubuntu GParted shows the partition empty, but after a re-scan the 58 MB are back...
Can try to see if I can make a screen recording to see if I'm doing it wrong somehow.
Thanks for your support!
I have a short screencast on screenr illustrating the problem, but unable to post a link I'll try to describe it.

Seen your screencast...it's a bit unclear. Sent you a PM, hopefully we'll be able to sort this out.
Same problem here h ttp//forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318647
The bootloader seemed to be beyond rescue. Nothing seemed to help, tried several drivers and computers. But the partition seemed locket somehow, couldn't replace the files. Tried to flash in stock ROM 136 and 138. Both failed unless you removed the cust update file. Then it succeeded, but still bootloop when it restarted.
So the phone is now returned for service.
Thanks katu2006 for all the help!

You cant, every NST is unique and using an image from another NST will cause trouble for both you and the NST it came from.
Thanks, nook is bricked but I can read the main partition, which .img I install?
Sorry for my english.

There's no img you can install.
You can try booting n2T-Recovery (v0.2) from a SD card and see if that helps. (Do not write that image to your NST!)
If not, send me a PM and I'll try to help you out
Something else you can try:
1) Flash noogie.img to an sd card.
2) Hook up your nook to a pc via usb once it has booted, and you should see all the partitions exported there.
3) In one of those partitions (recovery maybe? I'm struggling to remember), there's a factory.zip, which you can then install using the "Install from zip" feature of clockwork mod.
If you go this route, you'll have to reflash your sd card with clockwork mod after you've extracted the factory.zip using noogie.
Seems like kind of a pain, but I just recovered my device using this.
Remains in the screen ROOTED FOREVER and i can't do anything
I think, for michaelwill's method, you need to have linux running. I suggest you to try ros87's suggestion.
if I use backup from nook of my friend?

That is not a good idea, since each NookTouch has a unique information to register. If you are thinking of full restore from your friend's image (1.8GB image), it will overwrite your unique information. In that case, you and your friend's devices cannot register to BnN (or just one device). People says the info is stored in /rom. If you want to know more, you need to dig more. Otherwise try factory reset suggested by ros.

Correct!
Using a image from another NST is a very very bad idea!
There are a lot of stuff that's unique to your NST stored in /rom and in rombackup.zip on the Factory partition.
This includes:
Serial Number
Main Board Serial
Product ID
Manufacturing date
SHA hash of Private Key
Public Key in modulus form
WiFi Calibration file
Some unique binary file for your eInk screen
MAC Address
Battery Type
Duplicating the serial will make you or your friend unable to register with B&N
Duplicating / Faking the private/public key pair, will most likely make you unable to register with B&N (I'm currently testing this)
Duplicating a WiFi calibration can cause degraded WiFi performance
Duplicating that EPD vcom file (eInk screen).. well who knows
Duplicating the MAC will cause network troubles if used on the same network.
The wrong Battery Type (I've seen three different so far) can cause charging troubles, and will cause incorrect charge indication.
Don't go there!
NookRestore.img
Try writing NookRestore.img to an mSD card. (You can get a copy at my website: NootRoot)
Hard reset
I had issues rooting my NST and got stuck in a boot loop. After digging and digging through forums I finally discovered the secret to a hard reset. The instructions said to hold the power and the two bottom side buttons down together for over 20 seconds. That worked! My NST was back to when I pulled it out of the box. I then proceeded to re rooting. (my mistake was I did not upgrade the OS before rooting). My bad. Hope this helps someone recover from a stuck boot loop.
Good luck.

No it wasn't, Factory Reset doesn't remove root files or system apps installed by root tools, it only clears custom apps and settings.
While you might think it's back to stock, there are still leftover files and changes in /boot and /system

Hi, I've just found a way around this - it is possible to restore somebody else's .img file, provided you've backup up your rombackup.zip. Then after, using Noogie, you can overwrite rombackup.zip and the contents of it which are on a different partition. The only danger is that you would potentially overwrite battery type config file, as Nook has couple of them. I gave it a try on mine and it seems fine.

That is correct.
Problem is that most people who end up in a state where Factory Restore doesn't work has usually managed to overwrite their partition tables and part of the /rom partition.
And at this point it is too late to backup rombackup.zip as it's usually fragmented and cannot be recovered by ext2 file recovery tools.
So.. do a full backup before you do anything to your NST
I found if you restore with holding the two lower buttons it will remove all rooted files.

Go to my website, download nookRestore.img and write it to an mSD card, Erase and De register, Power Off, then insert mSD then power up, then follow on screen instructions!
