[Q] Can't boot after failed update - Acer Iconia A500

New stock A500 just out of the box this morning. Booted fine after the recommended 4 hour charge, running 3.0.1. Took the OTA update at the popup and rebooted fine. Checked in system and saw another update was available, downloaded and let it reboot, progress indicater went almost to end and failed. Tab won't boot now, shows status items and clock in lower right and small icon in upper left corner with 2 pulleys labeled "Android System", nothing happens when touching anything or pressing buttons. I've tried the reset button, cleared cache and data, have tried downloading several "update.zip" files and putting them on the SD card then rebooting into recovery. The updates start to install then I get a yellow triangle. I'm sure that there is a solution to this but I couldn't find it!
Thanks in advance,
Bob
EDIT: in addition to not booting since the failed update I have found that the tablet is no longer charging now too. Looks like this thing is going back to the store!

You most likely could put it into fastboot mode and flash it to fix your problem. BUT I WOULD NOT mess with it if it is brand new and you've done nothing to it.
TAKE IT BACK AND GET A NEW ONE

Thanks for the reply, please tell me more about this fastboot option.I have another 13 days to return it to the store so I don't have anything to lose! All of the stores in the area are out of the a500 right now.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App

If you start playing around fastboot and flashing you will void your warranty. Take it back while you can and you can honestly tell them that you did nothing to it.

Yeah, I see that the warranty could be an issue later if I did get this tab running now. I did an online chat with Acer support this evening and they indicated to me that they believe the problem to be a hardware failure, they wanted me to send it in but I told them that it's going back Walmart and they can send it back. Thanks again for your help and advice.
Best regards,
Bob

Process (system) is not responding, Help!

Hi Guys
I've had my Galaxy S for a couple of months now and I'm loving it, but I've run into a problem.
Yesterday I was using Google Navigation for about 45 minutes, I then exited to look up an address from an email and when the phone went to the home screen it froze for a few minutes followed by "Process (system) has stopped responding. [Force Close] [Wait]". I tried both options but nothing happened for 20+ minutes (as long as I waited) so I pulled the battery, but now the phone will not boot. It gets as far as the splash animation screen and then stays on that for about 5 minutes then goes to a blank screen with the buttons below the screen being lit up. I have left it like this over night and it has not progressed any further.
I have searched the forums but the only solution that appears available to me is a complete wipe, but if possible I would like to backup some data first like photos and music, is it possible to recover some data from it before wiping? I don't know if wiping will sort the problem but if I can get my data back somehow I guess it can't hurt to try (I can get to the recovery screen by holding vol-up and power).
It is running the stock Samsung 2.1 ROM, the only mods I have done is applied RyanZa's One Click Lag Fix which has worked flawlessly for weeks, but however I had recently updated it to version 2.1 with bind mounts at the beginning of last week, could this be the cause? It has worked fine since I did this until yesterday.
Also another point worth mentioning, I have had this same error a couple of times in the past but it has rebooted fine. Sometimes the phone appears to reboot in some way (the home screen (equivilant of windows explorer I guess) will close and restart randomly and the media scanner will run etc..but it's not a full reboot as it is much quicker, this problem did happen constantly for a couple of hours one day but it sorted itself out in the end.
So the main point it, is there a way to recover my data if the phone does not completely load up? And, generally, would a complete wipe from the recovery menu fix this issue?
Sorry for the double post.
I have been playing around with things and have now downloaded Odin3 which I understand can make a rom dump, which would presumably contain all my data as well which I could probably extract from the dump?
I have been googling for hours now and can't seem to find out how to create the backup in Odin. I have got the phone in download mode and connected via USB but Odin just says "<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)" and doesn't appear to even try to back anything up.
Is there a guide anywhere with how to create a dump in Odin?
Thanks
Problem solved.
I gave up trying to get back my data and decided to choose 'wipe/restore' from the recovery menu, and surprisingly, all my data is still there. All my downloaded apps are gone but the data is still present so I'm happy with that.
Mods: you can close this thread now if you want.
Thanks
Rob

[Q] Continue to fail updates 4.010.24

Received the update notification this morning, happily started downloading and installation.
Like some out there, the tablet rebooted and it seemed to install but up to about 1/4 progress it froze with a central honeycomb logo with exclamation mark. Thought it was part of the process, left alone for an hour but nothing happened, hence rebooted with a notification of 'update failed'.
Searching through google and xda forum the last 2 hours -- have tried the unrooting the device, plugging in to power, removing sd card to no avail.
Someone has also suggested to restore wpa_supplicant file under system/bin. I don't remember altering the file at all, and when I check the file it is dated 29/3/2010... i bought my device in April, hence assuming it has not been altered either by myself or from any app. Like wise for the telephony files as well, as I haven't changed anything to try to stop the cell standby issue to improve battery life.
I am left with no options unless someone has a better idea. I have not uninstalled any pre-loaded apps. Rooted with Gingerbread (and as I said tried unrooted and re-rooted without success in updating).
Thoughts?
Current build:
Android version 3.0.1
Kernel 2.6.36.3
Build no. Acer_A500_1.139.04_COM_GEN1
Failed system update to 4.010.24
I am located in Melbourne, Australia.
(Last thing would be to download the actual rom and update via CWM.)
open /cache/recovery/last_log on your tablet use root explorer
ypu will know whats wrong
I'm in Melb too, and that particular update has failed to download about 5 times now, and when it finally downloaded, it came up with a message saying "update invalid" or something along those lines. I'm gonna wait til I get home to try and update again.
altering WPA_Supplicant file is something you would've done so your tab would connect to ad hoc networks. Must be something else.. did you alter any other files? I'm working on this same issue. frustrating as f*#%
I was running stock rooted 3.01 and was failing updates over and over until I flashed back to the stock recovery using the Acer recovery apk. As soon as I did that and tried the ota update again it worked right away... once 3.1 was installed I rerooted using iconia root 2.1 and flashed cwrecovery back to tablet... let me know if this helped

Same for me. Had to go back to stock recovery for the OTA update to work.
Mine failed the first time. I rebooted and it worked the second time.
I tried using Acer Recovery Installer 1.5, checking Stock USA 1.141.07_COM_GEN1 and touched "install recovery image", rebooted, and nothing happened?
My build number remains 1.139.04_COM_GEN1
I am sure I have missed something...
Tried downloading and installing the 5th time, still failed and stuck at the same progress bar of 1/4 followed by that annoying honeycomb with exclamation mark logo.

If you see the little bee fail screen, it is not the stock recovery, but still CWM.

Hi .. try to do that...
the uploaded file helped and solved my issue..i'm now running Honeycomb 3.1
Solution posted by Bob here: (correct the link below "www")

Here's the WPA_Supplicant from my A500, after the 3.1 update. Hope this works for you guys.
I'm not sure what the extension is for the A500, but I had to add .zip to be able to upload it. Try removing the .zip before using it. Also, remove the 'original'. I added that to keep it straight on my tablet.
Good Luck.
Bob
p.s: sorry i'm a newbie here and can't post link outside the forum at the moment..
just follow the steps described by Bob!
I did see that different logo, which I subsequently rebooted as I thought it's frozen again.
Interestingly, I tried to push for another system update, attempt no. 7, and now, it progresses and complete update!!! Woo hoo!
Thanks for all the help. I still don't know which one sorts what out though... Cheers!

[Q-solved!] Bricked a500, "Android system" in upper left corner

My a500 is possibly very bricked, but I thought I would ask here before I sent it back to acer.
I was at 3.1 Acer_A500_4.010.40_COM_GEN1 and then I updated to stock 3.2 Acer_A500_4.010.40_7.006.03_COM_GEN1. I tried to go back to 3.1 and that of course did not work. So I tried to go back to 3.2. The update went along as usual and then it stopped about 90% of the way and sat there. I powered off and then on..
It went to the acer screen and the android screen and then to a black screen with the usual icons at the bottom (back, home, clock) and has an icon that looks like a pulley with the words "Android system" in the upper left corner.
I am just throwing this out here to see if anyone knows anything about this and a possible fix.
I formatted my sd card with the sd card formatter and the 3.2 update was decrypted. I don't think I used a corrupt update. I have also done the power button, vol +, toggle screen lock to flush my data and cache.
Thanks
Edit:
Not sure what happened but I thought I would do one more try and I was able to get to the 3.2 rom.
I had something similar happen. I reapplied the 3.1, then the decrypted 3.2 again and after a couple of times doing this the 3.2 update finally went all the way through again.
Hope this helps!
*edit*
Glad to see you got it
Thanks for the reply, I did try it one more time (for a total of about 10 flashes..) and it worked!!
I Fixed My Brick
After tons of searching on how I was going to get back to my rooted 3.1
Acer A500....That was after I accepted the 3.2 OTA Update (STUPID)
I ended up thinking I could just load one of the Full Package 3.1 's
and ended up Bricking the Darn THING ! (I am a Total NOOB with Android)
BUT...with the help of GAMEZR2EZ and the post at

BACK UP AND RUNNING Thanks !

[Q] [Solved] OTA Update Bricked

My Acer is stock with only ADW Launcher. I've not rooted it or done any modifications to it otherwise. No SD card in it when OTA attempted.
The OTA attempted to download today but seemed to have failed and ultimatly seems to have bricked the tablet. I called Acer Support and they want me to send the tab in to be fixed but I'm hoping there is a way to fix it still.
The OTA prompte came up and I agreed to download.
Download progress bar started but an hour later when I came back to my desk it was still at 0%.
I tried to cancel but it wouldn't cancel nor could I get back to the desktop or to anything else, basically frozen.
Not sure whatelse to do, I powered it off and turned it back on.
The Acer logo comes on and then the Android logo and that is as far as it gets.
Acer had me try holding power and vol down button. That would get me to android with a yellow triangle but thats its.
I found online the hard reset of power/vol up and toggle switch and got 'Erasing Data' but it never gets further.
Anyone have any suggestions of what to try?

You could try a manual update to 3.2 using the official Acer ota ROM found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
Drop the ROM associated with your current GEN on your external SD card, rename it "update.zip", then boot with your external SD card in the slot while holding power and volume.
Should do the trick.
Okay... so got it out of its hung state and its now sporting Acer_A500_7.006.01_COM_GEN2. I lost everything somehow but I can deal with that. The problem now is that the Wifi won't make connection. It attempts too but never obtains the ip address. Everything else in the house connects fine. Is there a fix for this or do I need to attempt the downgrade back to 3.1 to get wifi back?
UPDATE: Fixed the wife... not sure exactly how though. Was trying the different roms from the thread below and now am showing Acer_A500_7.006.13_COM_GEN2 and wifi works.

Good job!

[Q] Problem: Unresponsive screen after update

My wonderful wife gave me an Acer a500 for Christmas. Awesome gift. I had rooted it immediately with no problems, since all of my phones and families phone are rooted, it just seemed to be the natural thing to do.
As someone that "plays" with their android a lot I did all of the backups. Well, the time came to have my tablet "approved" for use at my company and also have the appropriate "encryption" software and keys added. Just as a precaution I decided to restore the original backup and unroot the tab.
All was going well until I received the update message. I went ahead and downloaded the update and ran it. During the install process it froze. I thought it was just busy so I left it for a good 20 minutes and finally realized it was frozen. I rebooted and it went through a couple of reboots and finally settled on the lock screen. But now I find the touch screen unresponsive.
I plugged in a mouse and keyboard in hopes that I could get back into it and start over, but, although, the mouse shows up, it is jumpy sluggish and will not grab the lock to slide open and eventually freezes.
I have tried all of the "update.zip" files I could find and they all fail at one point or another.
ADB allows me to explore in shell but since I unrooted, I cannot get su privileges.
Acer is of course, useless and the vendor it was purchased from is worthless.
I have been through every thread I could find and tried every trick I could come up with. Now I'm just stuck.
Any help is appreciated
I've had this a couple of times already. Usually just turning the screen off and on a couple of times does the job (the issue seems to be with the driver, also on various custom roms). Just try it after each off-on cycle, most of the time it takes no more than two or three tries, though there are exceptions.
Thanks, but it has been rebooted many many times since it's demise.
Decided to skip sleep tonight and keep plugging away.
I found an update.zip recovery file for an a501. Figured I can't do much worse so I went ahead and ran it.
It froze at about 95% but.........
Good News:
The tablet is responsive and touch panel works again.
Bad News:
It boots straight into system settings and although you can open the settings menu, nothing actually launches.
Decided to try all of the old update.zips and still everything fails.
No more ADB response.
When you originally unrooted your device did you revert back to the stock recovery or did you leave cwm on your device?? If you left cwm on your device that may be the problem with the update.zips and OTAs.
You are sooo right. I've never gone back to a stock rom before and I completely forgot about reverting to the stock recovery.
As a matter of fact, I was on Civato's Flexstriker 3.2.1 rom with the new CWM before I reverted back to the stock rom.
Well, at least we've determined my stupid mistake, but now the question lies: "How do I get back to any working rom?"
Here's an update. I did find an update.zip file that also begins to load but does not finish. It stops at 95% still.
I will attach the photos in case someone notices something otherwise I am at a loss. In addition to all of the above, I tried everything I could to get into APX mode but nothing. I am willing to try almost anything at this point, so all suggestions are appreciated.
Something I noticed was the recovery for the a501 was android with gears spinning in the body. The recovery I have now is a package with an arrow. The recoveries are different. The current update file is Acer_A500_1.145.05_COM_GEN1
So this brings me to a question: Can I put Thor's 1.6 CWM back on the a500 and at least work from there? I do have my original backups and thought I might be able to get somewhere that way.
