so just wait for the update, i get mine on 29 dec 31!

after a wait for more than 2 months, got the update yesterday

Airtel HTC HERO 2.73.720.5

Just got my Airtel Carrier - HTC Hero (unlocked) 2.73.720.5
Im surprised that everyone besides India have a 2.73.4xx firmware. Is it just me or did India get a smaller updated edition (revision) compared to the rest of the world, or is this just Airtel's doing of a little extra in the firmware/rom.
After running from WM to the iPhone, Ive finally made peace (hopefully) with the HTC Hero (Android). Being an avid Star Trek Fan...all I can say is I've got "Data" - what about you all
I did my little share of forum searching, but I couldnt find a single post regarding the Airtel HTC Hero (the last HTC Magic was locked with that stupid and insanely painful SPL), so my question begins with
1) Is the Airtel HTC Hero using another crazy SPL?
2) If so, what guide should I follow for unlocking (ability to ROM upgrade/change)
3) I can confirm that we are NOT locked to SIMCARDS - I can use my Idea Cellular Simcard just fine.
Added questions include - are there "Kitchens" like we used to have for Windows Mobile ?
Hope someone can help me out here - I'd love to be part of the ol' Cooking & Chef team
Nice to know that Airtel has brought in the latest version of the ROM.
Did you buy it with the Airtel dealer OR from a conventional distributor. At Bangalore, it is priced at 32K. How much did it cost you?? I am more of a palm guy...the palm pre just does not seem to come out.
I paid 33,600 actually Couldnt get a better deal and didn't want to wait a few more days since I'm off to USA tomorrow (rdosti = shivam)
Performance
Guys,
I am planning to buy Hero through Airtel and have a few questions,
1. Is the airtel version unlocked ?
2. Should I buy from Airtel or open market ?
3. Any reasons not to buy it ? Performance ? sluggishness ?
and lastly, is it simple to update the firmware, I am very keen on the new Android 2.0 update for the new google GPS app.
thanks in advance,
Jaspreet
Only the first part of 2.73.xxx.x bit matter. The "xxx.x" refer to carrier and regional customization, the ROM is basically the same.
have same phone, in China.
Hi,
Did you root the phone? I have the same phone, but i bought it in China for 3100 rmb. I'm trying, and im stuck on downloading 'boot.img'... FAILED (remote: not allow)
im going through this guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548218
Hope it works. ill post results later.

Followed the following guides, in order.

I am more interested in when 3 get their arses in gear. Maybe I will be able to get an unbranded ROM before then.

Android 2.1 in 5-6 weeks?

Yesterday at IFA (biggest CE show in Europe) in Germany i asked the Dell rep about the official android 2.1 update for streaks; he assured me that we have to wait only 5 or 6 weeks.
Also got myself a streak and i'm loving it so far; the screen is great. The only problem is that i'm quite afraid of dropping it...
Should have asked him about the reported bugs in the O2 version of it, will they be sorting it out or not.
I have the unlocked European streak. It had 1.6 6267.
I installed the UK 4399 then upgraded to the official 2.1. All working fine. Does this not work on the US models?

I think it can be made to work on any model, @ the OP, you sure the Dell guy was talking about 2.1 and not 2.2?
upgraded US streak to 2.1 = NP
FYi - Was able to upgrade a US bought Streak to 2.1 with no problem. O2 screen bootup.
I think he was referring to the official Dell 2.1 update for unlocked streaks, not the O2 one.

See this tweet from HTC

Yeah. Pretty cool! I thought there was no way HTC would give 2 updates to a midrange phone.
The tweets came from HTC and also also the President of HTC America, Jason Mackenzie.
I'd love to know why they're choosing to update the 816 while they have no plans to update the 8 month newer and more spec heavy Desire Eye.
I went on HTC's website and they showed no scheduled updates for the Virgin Mobile version of the Desire 816.

That's carrier branded phones for you.
Yes, Virgin Mobile strikes again.
If this rumor (Marshmallow) turns out to be true, this is going to revitalize this phone in terms of storage memory. Marshamallow support adoptable storage (ability to treat microSD cards as if they were internal storage).
This is what it says on the HTC website:
Virgin Mobile HTC Desire 816: This device is currently on Android 5.0 Lollipop. No additional updates are planned at this time.
Whether you get Marshmallow or not may depend on your carrier.
Yep, unfortunately we'll have to hope that someone can make a Marshmallow Rom for the Virgin Mobile 816 from one of the other variants.
I messaged an HTC exec about what it says on HTC's software updates page about Virgin Mobiles 816 on Dec. 18th. He replied really quickly with "We're still working to make it happen. Stay tuned!"
That isn't saying much and doesn't instill much confidence but if we don't get the update at least we know it's 100% on Virgin Mobile.
HTC says Virgin is getting is getting 6.0
Tweet to me from a couple weeks back. Can't post the link directly yet.

Well, took out my old Desire 816 after reading this and surprise. Got 2 updates :
1) about 52 MB
2) 1.67GB
And now the "grand pa" is running Marshmallow .
P.S.: bought 32 GB memo card and now it has 40GB (well 34 in reality).
PS2: if no update for my M8s by end of the month, then goodbye HTC!

BUMP....
Has anyone heard any updates on this?
Also, it looks like @Rexton270 is in England so, and please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm assuming that you are not on Virgin Mobile USA.
