I will seriously think about doing this. I just paid for one that looks really beat up.
I think it will involve stripping everything out of the metal frame, wetsanding until it's smooth, then polishing.

wetsanding cast aluminum??... no way, don't even try that unless you want to really mess it up... you're gonna need a buffer (Harbor Freight, bench-mount model about $60) a couple of very soft cotton/flannel buffing disks and some red/green/brown jeweler's rouge... it will come out perfect...
wetsanding with up to 3000 grit paper is good for clear plastic and painted surfaces (like clearcoat) to remove imperfections like 'orange peel' or to remove yellowing and scratches from headlight lenses... wetsanding will destroy aluminum unless you know exactly what you're doing, and you'll end up polishing out your sand scratches with compound anyway, and it still won't come out right... you need something with a higher grit than 3000 (which is usually the highest grit paper they sell at a store) and that is jeweler's rouge... trust me on this one...

I don't think you can go straight to polish on the N1 because the finish is textured. Also, the photos of the phone I bought look like the thing has deep scratches and concrete rash which will need to be smoothed significantly and sanding is the only way I can think of to fix that.
The phone is really beat looking, so if I mess it up or it doesn't look good, I'll just replace the housing. I had already factored the cost of a new housing into the price I offered and paid anyway.
I have 2 n-1's... one of them in pieces, and I too, was seriously thinking ofdoing this for the luls. basically, sand off paint, then clearcoat it, since aluminum does oxidize.
I would remove everything first...

Cast aluminum sands then polishes just fine. I'd use 1000 ish to remove the paint , then 2000-3000 until it hazes. After that some rubbing compound , glaze, swirl mark remover and she'll look like a mirror. Zoop seal it and you're done.

I have lots of experience polishing different types of metals, plastics, you name it... while the methods you and others are describing, 'could' work out for you (or someone who hasn't actually done this before, as I'm assuming you haven't), the method I told you will get you the best results in the shortest amount of time, with the least amount of effort... I've been through this a lot... restored cars, jewelry, internal lock pieces from old church doors, weapons, etc, etc... $60 for a decent buffer, $10 for some buffing discs, and $10 for some jeweler's rouge, about 20 minutes, and you're set... once you get the hang of it, you can polish that glass up too... jeweler's rouge works wonders... if you take your time and are careful to buff with the texture of the grain and at the right speed and pressure, you'll maintain the textured surface on the N1 as well... good luck to you, however you end up deciding to tackle it...
Seriously, why sand when you can just use a strong paint remover?
Because it's anodized and not painted?
Most paint removers won't strip anodizing, are expensive, won't reduce scratches and scuffs, won't smooth the texture, and most importantly, I already have 3000-grit sandpaper.
I just got my beat up N1 on Saturday. It's really rough and should be a good candidate for experimentation. I'm currently using it, so experimentation will wait until the parts I ordered to repair my other N1 arrive.
This thread is a fail.
Sanding the phone down gently will not cause any damage to it. As long as you don't sand it down past the metal there will be no problem. The hard part isn't sanding, it's putting on a new surface.
I have sanded down an Xperia X1 before (black and silver model) and re-finished it. I did this because there were scratches on the body that were annoying me. It was very simple and held up very nicely.
For those who want the rubberized texture, use plasti-dip paint. Works like a charm.

How thick is the PlastiDip paint? Did you use the spray? Is the spray a lot thinner than the dip for tool handles?

Hey,
There are a few different applications made by Plasti Dip. The spray that you are talking about would indeed be too thick for the styling of our phones. They have a paint on version and another spray version that can be controller more when applying so that you get the perfect amount.
There are also 3rd-party companies that sell the same style of products with different application types at your local hardware store.

i rate it a 5 cuz its AWSOME!!! btw i have a few scratches on the battery door cover. can i polish it too to hide the scratches?
What i done was use sand paper designed for metal Or wet and dry sandpaper would also do just fine. then just use a cloth and apply metal polish to it along with the grain of the metal. took me 30 minutes and the metal polish was under £5. And it got rid of all the scratches that were on it so its a good scratch remover too
It looks good. I did this on my HD2. The only problem is it becomes tarnished, scratched and rather unsightly in no time. I often wondered if some sort of lacquer may have been the answer.
i might think of doing this later. is the door more prone to scratches after the polish?

I should probably consider doing this, it looks pretty sweet, and my battery door is currently covered in scratches, and the whatever the coating that goes over the aluminum is, is starting to peel off.
Although I'm likely going to get an extended battery from Seidio, so I'll probably hold off until then, since I'll be getting a new battery door with it.
Might try something like this too. My G2's battery door has the stock clear coat plastic flaking off. I've started to just peel all of it off so I can do something else to it.
i done it a week ago and its just fine no scratches at all, if im not sure the coating they put on the battery door is what scratches because once i had taken it off the scratches disappeared. its like a mirror if you put enough metal polish on it i notice people admiring themselves in the back of my phone when im texting

Ya thats my biggest complaint. That film is peeling off my back cover also. If i could get that off i would be a happy camper! Not really looking to go to the hardware store to buy **** though. Would rather use some type of household product if that is even possible

I remember when this was done a while back, it's still pretty cool. I scraped off my coating when it started peeling. Just use something like copper or a hard plastic so it doesn't scratch the metal. Not sure, but something like acetone should be able to soften the coating and remove it.
By the way - how in the hell did you remove the 'G2' on there? It's recessed just as much as the 'HTC' and I wouln't grind the plate down that much personally. So how did you do it?
EDIT: Took a second look and saw the 'with htc sense'. No wonder it doesn't say G2 lol.

All together this cost less than £5 and a little elbow grease. I would of made a step by step guide or video if I knew anyone else wanted to do it. Because it's very simple to do.

I lasered part of a maze that I generated using some algorithm we had to code as an assignment in the protective film (sadly, the laser isn't strong enough to really engrave the cover). It does have quite a few scratches after six months sadly. Maybe I'll buy a new one on ebay and make something else

I thought mine looked good but thats just gone and taken it to another level 10/10
So i did this with 3m 1080 scotchprint carbon series and with nail scissors cutting it from 10x20cm took a while, about 2 hours to get it look nice i also cut a piece for the home button which took awhile too to get it fit perfectly!
to make this thread not so useless, recommend or post pictures of your customized gs2
anyway, what do you think ?

cost of this project was about 10-20 bucks. really, its not that difficult to make, just needs patience and good light. that is the first one i've ever made!

What did you cut it with? Just a normal sharp knife/razor blade? Any tips on cutting the corners, makig the holes, putting the sides and corners on etc???
I know it doesn't require a huge 20 page instruction book but if you could provide some tips or suggestions I think that would be great... Unless you plan on selling them then I suggest not to give the tips

It's actually textured, the "weave" is bumpy, raised a few cm, provides a bit of a rough, oil free surface without being uncomfortable. And you can do a fun DJ scratching imitation if you run your fingernail over it quickly.
I've been using it (they call it 3M Dynoc in North America) on the back of my SGS1 for over a year now, and on the back of my Tab 7" for nearly as long.
I couldn't be arsed to cut my own, so I bought mine pre-cut from PhantomSkinz (Skinomi also sells a very similar "skin"). The phone kit costs ~$25 before coupon, and it covers the entire back, the sides, and even comes with a wet-apply screen protector.
It's dead easy to apply, though the edges take a bit of practice...but if you screw up, just lift it up and try again.
It's durable as hell, the SGS1 has one minor, nearly invisible scratch in it after a year of abuse in my pocket, in my motorcycle jacket or tank bag, dirty tables, etc. They look far more "high tech" than the funky designs Samsung used on the back of those devices, especially the Tab.
Occasionally, I'd catch the bottom edge of the tape on the SGS with my fingernail when removing the battery cover and it'll lift a bit. Apply some heat and it goes right back into shape.
Little trick with the rough feel on the edges...heat it (desk lamp or hair dryer both work well) and run your fingernail over the edge...this thins it, making it much smoother.
I just placed an order with Skinomi for both a SGS2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 "carbon" kit. On the SGS2, I'm thinking about leaving the battery cover naked since it's cheap to replace and already textured, and just using the carbon on the chin and sides. The chin on mine is starting to show some friction wear along the edge closest to the battery cover, and the sides get slippery as a bar of soap.

wait wait whaaat? 1200x300 for $10 dollars??!? is it 3M 1080 series or 3M Di-noc?
i cut all this with little scissors, about the length of a palm, maybe just a bit more. corners wont need any special stuff, just a hair dryer to get it a little more flexible. ONE THING, when i bought the carbon, I tought that i'll just bend anything which comes over the edge, to backside of the plate. well its not that easy. gs2 cover is so precisely cut that it doesnt allow any kind of extra stuff under the cover, so you just need to cut it little bit at a time, then try it, and cut a bit more and try, untill it fits properly. this will take most of the installation time. just be careful not to cut too much! same goes for the camera hole. very carefully and take the time it needs, even if there is 0.1mm too much, the camera wont fit properly. not difficult, but takes time. a hour atleast.

the surface of the new 3M 1080 series has more rubbery feel than the Di-noc (what skinomi uses) and there is seriously good grip! Doesn't feel sticky, but still offers awesome grip believe me! maybe because of the carbon texture i dont know but has good grip for sure!

Everything works fine (except for the camera focus, which I can live with since everything is in focus always as it is because it shoots at like f/8). What's weird is that it has survived so many other falls onto concrete, and this just happens now.
I really need to replace the glass as soon as possible. It looks pretty unprofessional cracked like this.. I am out of warranty (bought the phone in September 2010 from T-Mobile), and T-Mobile no longer has any G2s .
I've looked through a few people who have mentioned replacing their front glass, and would like to do so myself. Anyone have advice regarding how I could do this?

Okay - what would you recommend instead?
the glue that is on your phone now will sufice. when heat it up with hair dryer (be carefull if you use a heat gun) most of it will stay along the frame of your phone. just keep it warm and quickly put new digitizer back. have done it twice now with g2s and countless times with g1s and no dust has ever seeped in.
but with g1s i often replaced the casing as well. here i would use 3m double sided tape that worked very well. if you are also replacing the case or for some reason dont feel the glue is enough use this

I recommend 2mm 3M adhesive tape. I have used it for the 3 g2s I own and it holds darn well. Its less then 5 bucks on amazon and you will have quite a bit of it. Dont use glue. I always take off that old black tape.

The tape doesn't make the digitizer bulge away from the surface at all? I feel like it would. I'll give that link a buy though, just in case.
the tape he and i is refuring to is thinner than paper, i have not needed it for a g2 before but only have done 2 digitizers on these so i cant say its never necessary unless you are replacing the case as well, but its cheap to have around and may be needed

No if you stack it right I had to stack three pieces of that tape to flush it. It does not move around if you tape in the right spots. Its very thin and almost invisible.
That is weird... I did the SAME thing last week lol! I busted it on the concrete too and everything. It scratched up the bezel pretty bad too. I had insurance so I ended up getting the MT4GS (aka HTC Doubleshot). I love how speedy it is but I REALLY miss the development here and the GREAT community here in the Desire Z/G2 sub forum As far as repairing/replacing the screen (the digitizer specifically), everyone here gave great advice. I used to repair phones for a number of years and we always used a sealant very similar to double sided tape that y'all were mentioning. It basically was foaming glue that acted similar to silicon or something. I agree that about not using super glue. Bad idea. Also be careful with the ribbon wires and watch a few videos prior to disassembly. There were a few tear down threads here I'd keep handy while repairing. Good luck to ya!
Make sure you are VERY careful when removing the lcd its very fragile. I reaced my digitizer easy and was careful and lcd got mrssed up ie no pic. Ordered a new lcd and it had not brightness control always dim waiting for new replacement now. Side note once new screen comes in I will be selling this phone if anyone is interested i have 3 of them only need 2

Son of gun. The last three screws I need to remove do NOT fit with the philips head screwdriver that was recommended. Now I get to scramble around with my phone in pieces trying to find a smaller philips head screwdriver. Awesome.
They are philips head, not torque screws. I checked and triple checked.
Anyone have any idea what to do here? I can't find smaller screwdrivers anywhere. Home depot has got nada.
Go out and buy a precision screwdriver set or maybe a eye glasses repair kit. Only the first 3 screws are torx T5. Also there is 7 of them tiny ones not 3. There is 3 on either side and one more under keyboard backstop

No it's the three screws across the back at this time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=u-dR8CHEGjY#t=251s).
They are smaller than all the others and I still cannot get them out. I cannot find an eye glasses repair kit or precision screwdriver set small enough.
http://www.repairsuniverse.com sent me the screwdrivers for the Inspire 4G. Pretty sure the digitizer is for the G2 but I'll have to check the screen sizes to make sure.
Update. Fry's elecronics had a repair kit for smartphones that fit the screws. Still working on it.

if you keep watching the video you will see that when he removes the sticky keyboard backstop there are three more identical size screws mirrored from the ones you are talking about right on edge of phone, and then when you remove that piece after you remove the screws there wiil be one more (this makes number 7 ) screw of the same size tiny. Also i dont think it is metioned in the video but when you go to remove the keyboard backstop (the shiny piece under the sticky strip ) use your safe pry tool to unlock the tabs from the edge and then you must slide the piece towards the center of the phone it does not just pry off there are tiny tabs holding one side down opposite of the screws ( edge of phone ) And as far as the screwdriver for eye glasses repair, is it you cant find one or it just does not work? You should be able to find one at any walgreens or equivalent drug store or pharmacy. You could also try a hobby shop they might have something that will work. I personally use quite a big screwdriver to disassemble you just need to make sure it has a sharp point at the tip of the star ( mine is a phillips number 00 ) Believe me once you get it apart once you will be that was so easy.
I usually don't like to use cases, bought one for the m8. It made it bulky so i found a sleek way of gripping it. No company made griping product, just plain ol' electrical tape.
You can style (cut) how you want for your preference. I put it there because of the bottom three fingers that grip that part of the phone. It's sleek, none intrusive, actually does a very good job gripping. I can shake it and it will stay put. Photos should be attached. Tell me your thoughts

Orrr just install a Zagg or Xtremeguard wet install back protector. Adds some grip without making your beautiful device look like a Blue Peter project!

I guess because its cheap and can be used to fix anything....even though it looks trashy, its still functional and better than spending money to have it fixed correctly.

Lol... It is a bit of an Americanism & joke, although one that is seated in truth...
Duct tape in America is used to affect many repairs, from simple tears in paper, to re-attaching bumper to automobiles & securing trunk lids (what the EU calls the boot). It is used to make or repair wallets, shoes & even for furniture repairs, not just for attaching ducting to plenum boxes or GRD cans.
The joke comes in because it is said that a redneck (slanderous term for blue collar worker or laborer) can fix anything with duct tape, & that if it can't be fixed with duct tape, then 'F' it, it's broken.

This may work well if you live somewhere cool year round, however, if you live anywhere its fairly hot and/or humid during the summer - then you know what happens to electrical tape. When it heats up - you lose the bond, then the tape will slide around leaving a sticky, slimy mess all over your phone/hand/pocket. Just a heads up for anyone looking to do this. If your phone lives indoors, however, I'm sure its a non-issue.

Not sure if u also considered the fact that phones can heat up. My m7 gets pretty hot sometimes like when gaming and charging (probably shouldn't) don't know if the m8 heats up though but then again where I live its 110 during summers, was 107 this week

Does the Xtremeguard back skin wrap ONLY around the back, or does it wrap around to the sides as well? I'm ideally looking for a skin that ONLY covers the back, which is for some reason surprisingly hard to find with the M8. Most skins wrap around the sides too. The idea I had was to use it with an edge only bumper case, and when a skin wraps around to the sides, it interferes with the fitment of the case. I had a aluminum edge bumper + back skin on the M7 and loved the setup.
