How much RAM does the Iconia has?
It's says 1GB, but I only had about 400 or 500 of RAM available to use... where's the rest of it?
Background processes use the RAM as needed... Even a PC never has the full amount of RAM as the OS and other apps running in the background use memory....
The operating system uses anywhere from 100-300m just on my smartphone so I would guess a tablet might use more. Depends on the device. Usually the roms like cm7 get rid of the stock bloatware.

Hi there,
I just got my Acer A500, and Iam very happy with it except for one thing which is the use of RAM.
Honeycomb uses half the RAM to operate, so i get 400 mb free only.
I have Htc HD2(448mb ram) with Froyo, i get 320 mb free.
So if I change my Acer to Froyo will it give me more free ram than now?

Why do you feel you need more free ram? In a Linux environment free ram is wasted ram. Do things not work as expected, are you noticing any performance related issues that make you think you need more ram? Or, is this about getting a bigger number that doesn't really relate to actual enjoyment of the device?
if you are really that obsessed with your free ram...root your tab and rename/remove any app that you do not think you will ever use. that way they do not run in the background. i have done this with quite a bit of apps and i hover around 450-500mb free.

yes, things not work as expected !
I thought with 1 gb of RAM I will be able to move between apps without the need of klling them, but now when I move from app to another it become slow in many ways for example, using the keyboard will be depressing each time i press, i have to wait, also, some time it frezez for 2 or 3 seconds, last example is the AutoCAD need 300 mb to work, so i cannot check my email while playing the AutoCAD, i have to kill it then check my email.
Thanks for replying
Just a q, why does android waste many ram. I have 690mb then some unknown stuff keep eating it leaving only 100+ mb left. Why is this so?

RAM that is not used is wasted. Its normal to have some free though for system processes and for fast tasking.

Thats a galaxy tab 2 not a nexus 7 . And judging by ram is stock rom.

okay, let me put it this way: wasted ram is the ram not used. the more ram used for an app, the better it runs. so android, being a modern operating system, allows dynamic ram allocation, so it decides how much ram is used for a specific app. the operating allows the current app to eat up as memory as possible, so it runs smoothly. when you start multitasking, the background apps starts to take up memory FROM the current app. and when a background app takes too much ram, it will be killed automatically.
to sum up, dont worry about memory allocation on android, the os manages it just fine.
Hi,
I noticed that ram usage on galaxy s4 is very high even when all of the apps are closed. I have used task manager to close all of the apps and then cleared the memory but there was still about 1.05GB of ram used. I don't know if this is normal since I haven't been using android phone for 2 years. Can somebody tell me if this is normal and why? If not what can I do to fix it? Thanks!

its normal for s4... some stock apps are being cached in memory for faster operations
unused ram is wasted ram. If an app needs extra space, something will be automatically killed to make that space.

all of this is true... also keep in mind, the gpu requires slightly more ram because of the 1080p resolution.
Ok. Thank you all for the help
This is the problem of Sammy ROMs, the only way to fix it is to... wait for a Custom ROM and Flash it
this is normal on SGS4 .
Reasons of that are mainly GPU and HQ resolution , cached services and process, and even more if you are using the included extra features (S-voice, NFC ...)
But the SGS4 come with 2 gb of RAM ! you still get like 800 free mb of memory that is good enough for all you needs ))
Personally when I close all apps i get 0.91 gb used memry and 0.9bg free memory
Hi,
I looked at my free ram and on daily use I have 1 GB of free ram.
So is there any sens to use ram manger to allow android use more ram (mean to not kill app and has less free ram)?
Unused RAM is wasted RAM (just before anyone else says it )
I have 1.3GB of RAM free on my N4. I wouldn't recommend a 3rd-party RAM manager, and just trust Android to handle it
Unrelated, but I have some weird memory leak issue on my N10 that basically causes all RAM to be taken up by something eventually, and all apps end up Restarting. Quite annoying, but the only thing I can do in this situation is reboot the tablet. Can't say I've seen or heard of this on the N4.

i cant say i like the way android does it, even though it does do it. i use greenify, and autostarts to prevent apps from starting in the background. also, i change the numbers to androids ram management. now im happy
But greenify make some apps start slower, yes? (because they have to start again)
How you change the number of free ram?

If you have widgets on your lock screen or on your home screen they will use up ram. Uninstall any apps you rarely use to free up ram.
Don't see why you're worried. You have as much FREE ram as an s3 does on the box
On a more serious note, I doubt you'll see any difference by freeing up ram. 500-600 mb of free ram = smooth experience generally

I'm no expert, but what I've read on these forums, it's best to just let Android take care of it. Android has come pretty far with memory management, and third-party apps might just end up taking more RAM/battery.
You're wasting your time worrying about it.

This is true, forget about ram manager and dont be paranoid about the free/used ram amout
Thanks for help, I will not use any ram manager etc.
Is freeing up RAM necessarily bad for Android? I hear people say that Android tries its best to use up as much RAM as possible to keep it running reasonably well and that unused memory is wasted memory. I just recently disabled most if not all what is considered bloat on my g2 using the stock application manager and my usual free RAM went from 650-700mb to about 930-950mb.
Just wanted to know how it would affect the phone itself because I've also read that disabling some bloat can have the device run cycles trying to start up disabled applications in the background?

you already have a decent amount of free ram but with android its bteer for the operating system to use more as this would mean a faster and smoother experience if if were to use little your phone would not be much better than a really cheap android device with only 512mb of ram
