Yearly Upgrade 3 days away - Epic 4G General

Normally I roll my eyes at these threads.. but.. whatever, anyways
I am on a friends employee plan, meaning I get an upgrade once a year.. that upgrade is dec 26th.. and I don't kno what to do.. the epic was the first phone I got on his plan.. it was my first smartphone.. ive learned a buttload about android, flashing, etc.
I was thinking I was going to wait for the galaxy nexus to use the upgrade.. but as my upgrade approaches I'm getting an itchy trigger finger on the gs2..
I'm starting to lean more towards just waiting til next december for the galaxy nexus.. what do u guys think?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

First make sure the plan doesn't change to 20 months after this upgrade since Sprint is eliminating a lot of upgrade eligibilities. The GS2 is a great phone. So if you don't want to hold out until the LTE phones come out with quad cores in the summer then go for it.

Hm I wonder if that applies to the employee plans.. ill have to check.. if I am set to get another upgrade next december I think I'm going to do it.. I doubt minneapolis would be fully up and running with lte until then anyways

Yup, that's what I would do if you have another one coming next December. By then there should be a good line of LTE phones. But if it's 20 months....

So confirmed it will be 20 months

NOW is that finger so itchy? LOL. I could have upgraded at Radio Shack because of an error in their system but didn't because the Epic is awesome for one, can't live without the keyboard for 2, and then didn't want to be stuck with WiMax for 20 more months.

That 20 month news spread the metaphorical preparation h on my trigger finger.. I don't kno that I would want to be on a wimax phone for over a year after lte hits..

I'd wait too... Like Kenny said quads are coming. LTE is coming. And if you can wait a little longer into late next year you might be able to get a handset with CDMA on 700Mhz band (recovered Nextel iDEN spectrum) with much improved coverage along with the quad-core handset with LTE 4G. (though it could be 2013 by the time handsets and network are ready for that)
20 month upgrade cycles sucks but you have an Epic with lots of dev activity and the potential to get ICS via CM. I'm sticking with it for another year in all likelyhood... save up some cash and wait for a CDMA/LTE Android flagship device that will keep me cool for a minimum of 20 months.

I'm going to wait.. I've been waiting so long for official cm7.. I'm not jumping ship just yet.. plus the epic community is the shiz..

I have an upgrade available on January 1st and I've had the same problem. I want to use the upgrade because it THERE! I thought about the E4GT, but it's another TouchWiz phone. Then I thought about maybe if/when the Galaxy Nexus comes to Sprint, but then there are quad cores coming out shortly after that! Who's to say Sprint will get those right away? Such is the life of a techie...

I've been eligible for an upgrade since early october... I haven't used it yet because of the elimination of 1 year upgrades so I'm saving it until the first quadcore LTE qwerty phone. My epic does everything I need and THENSOME. I can only imagine when I finally see a phone that actually makes me say "............deal."

Quadcore lte qwerty?! For me I would add aosp and samsung hardware to that.. but that's wishful thinking.
I'm willing to trade the keyboard for a 4.5in or above screen.. I would prefer aosp, but honestly I would probably settle for tw.. as I'm just going to flash a rom that removes the garbage anyways..
Is the quadcore going to be similar to what some dual core phones are now? The software doesn't support the processor so it really is just 1 core?

Regarding Sprint Premier silver members

Some info first, I was supposed to turn sprint premier gold on October 5th, and then i was getting the E4GT. But then the sprint playbook said sprint was getting rid of it, but that gold members would stay that way through 2012 until they upgrade. So i was freaking out, they are getting rid of Premier silver/gold status 3 days before my 10th year anniversary with sprint! So, i was advised by my favorite sprint employee, Korey_Nicholson, to simply call *2. So, i did, told them my situation, and they sent me up one level. The 2nd guy on the phone said that all premier silver members that were turning gold between now and December 2012 will still turn gold anyways! So, i'm still going to be able to get it.
Short version: If you were supposed to turn Sprint Premier Gold status between now and December 2012, you still will.
Also, they changed my number to be the primary line for me to recieve the upgrade instead of my Mom's line.
I put zero worth in anything said by a sprint rep. Did you get this in writing? Id call back and tell them to email this to you. Make sure to have them clearly word what they told you, have them specify your ptn, along with their own full name, and a number and extention to get back them when it doesn't happen.
Just me for real. No dis to wdm, just I know almost all of us have been given conflicting info from one rep to another.

My Epic is blazing fast thanks to Devs here and Bonsai crew. I can hold out for a tri-core or quad-core with a physical keyboard. Technology is moving so fast these days. It seems as soon as I got my Epic a few dual core phones hit and now 2.5Ghz quads on the horizon. You took your time to decide to root, don't rush into this.

Two problems
1 - Second link needs a 'html' and not 'htm' on it.
2 - Those are 'expected' specs, unfortunately.
I'm looking forward to genuine 'next gen' type hardware like people seem to want this to be, but this is just speculation and wishful thinking currently.
hopefully this will we an improvement over ths sgs2.. a better TW ui will be nice.. Something different will help them out..
Hopefully being as it is expected to start delivering in the second quarter that Sprint's version should have LTE and maybe we will finally see a keyboard again.
more importantly, will the sg3 have a variant with a hardware keyboard...

Yeah, screw this 3D nonsense on a phone. If it does release in September here in the States, on Sprint, that would be about the right time where some of us would be covered by LTE. I've had an upgrade since like March of this year and have been sitting on my Epic. I don't think I'm going to jump on anything and with LTE coming out next year, I'm probably going to wait for an LTE capable phone, and make sure LTE is around the Chicago area before I do anything.
With Epic moving to MTD, I expect that in itself to extend the life of the phone to about what I would want/need.
Now, if the GNex comes out in the next month or two...it's going to be mighty tough to hold out considering I already get WiMax around this area, and that's not going away until 2015...

For the people having second thoughts about the epic touch 4g

All I got go say is if you have a upgrade coming up soon this is the phone to get. If your worried about the lack of a physical keyboard trust me I feel your pain but after having this phone for about 3days already I can honestly say I don't miss the physical keyboard at all. This phone is so much earlier to root and install customs roms. The speed is incredible and with the right rom and kernel combo you can easily get over 6000 on the benchmarks score. Oh if your short on cash don't worry what ever corporate sprint store you go to they will buy back your old epic for 80.00. If you got an upgrade coming the touch is the way to go. Did I mention front facing video recorder. Well anyway it was indeed a pleasure being apart of this wonderful forum for over a year I hope to see you soon over on the epic touch forums. Take care.

Why would people update only to be stuck on contract for two years with no LTE? Plus the keyboard is still a need for me or a bigger screen the Galaxy Nexus sized screen is looking good for me. You mentioned it was easier to root and install custom ROM on the ET4G how exactly can it be easier than a one click root on froyo or flashing clockwork mod on gingerbread, then flashing a ROM in clockwork?...also with CM7(which is official on our phone now) we get front facing camera video recording also. So I don't really see the need to get an ET4G
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
Negatives:
-800x480 screen: So 2 years ago. 1280x720 AMOLED or bust.
-WiMax: They're not expanding to my area, so I'd rather go with the future LTE.
-Quad-Core phones are coming out. Higher performance ceiling at the same battery use, or even less with newer deep sleep modes.
My upgrade isn't until june, so I'll be going Quad-core.
While the ET4G is undoubtedly the best Sprint phone, I don't think it is worth using an upgrade on. The OG Epic is still a very good phone and is only getting better thanks to the great work of our devs. I will be using my upgrade on a quad core LTE 1280x720 monster phone. Probably the GS3.
Wait for an LTE device. Would be the best logical phone choice imo

i was thinking about the white epic touch, but wouldn't use an upgrade for it, just the tax refund.
See a lot of people waiting on the GS3 but the 2 isn't that old, how long would it be till 3 comes out? Are there official mumblings of a 3 with specs n such or is this all just assumption?
No 4G in my area and who knows when I'll get it, not sure waiting on LTE is worth it.

Ill probably run the epic for another year or so. Its a still a great phone and a big upgrade compared to my old optimistic v.
I am still getting a Google phone... like I said before, I don't want to be pissed off by samsung's lack if updates, closed source ROM, or HTCs locked bootloaders. I would actually like a Google phone on stock... I don't care if there is 65 core... single core is fast enough and dual core is amazing. Higher on a mobile phone is just stupid until software advances.
