I've been using CM9 nightly since 07/12 or something, and love its speed. Just wondering if green lens camera (just photos, not 720p vids) will work on CM9 eventually? Any technical reason why it would not work (like unreleased source/libs etc)?
Guys, please respond. Whether I stick with defy or not depends on this camera issue, tbh.
Nobody can guarantee that. If your choice depends on ICS buy Nexus phone.
Of course, if there is technically no roadblock, I trust devs to work their magic. What i mean is, is there any technical reason it definitely wont work? Like locked bootloader, no ics kernel for defy etc?
Was thinking of sgs2 if defy wont work with ics. Will sgs2 have similar problems in future too? For jellybean i mean, as ics for s2 is already announced.
it depends on whether epsylon or any other dev can write a driver or kernel module for the gb (2.3.x) kernels, because thats whats keeping the green lens from working.

didn't the devs already write custom drivers for 2.3? in which case there is hope for the same on cm9 :-D

people keep mentioning these custom drivers made by epsylon, but i havent seen anything... could someone please post the link to a related topic??
Even I ly read abt it when someone wrote abt it in passing.
On a side note, epsy has a green lens n is locked to defy+ sbf, and has written that fixing cam will be hard, but not impossible. Gives me enough hope

Hi all, sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but I'm pretty new so I can't post in the development section yet. Anyways I'm running CM7 right now and ever since nightly build 91 the FFC has been broken. When you click to enable the FFC the rear camera just tilts its orientation. I tried going to the CM forums but it says "no bug reports, etc" in the nightlies section. It's not at huge deal since I don't use the FFC often, but I would think it would be something they'd want to know about or look into. When I go back to build 90 the FFC works fine. Thanks for any info in advance.

Im sure zinx is well aware of the issue. The nightly builds will almost always have something wrong with them. (I think they do that on purpose)That's what I find to be the fun with nightlies. One other thing unless your a dev posting a rom you should never start a thread in the development section.

Hah, Thanks for the heads up on that. Yea, nightly builds are great.. It's like X-mas every (usually) morning
It's because in the recent nightlies the CM team is implementing a new kernel, thus it's breaking certain things such as the FFC. But of course, it will be fixed in time.
I'm sure this new kernel will kick ass once they're done tinkering with it.

Aah, I didn't know that (Sorta new to the whole ROM, etc scene) That makes sense then, thanks for the info!
I was getting a little annoyed by this too, so i reverted to stable 7.0.3. Then I realized netflix didn't work anymore, so I did a little research and found that I had made a nandroid right in the sweet spot between nightlies where both netflix and the ffc worked. I'll stick with this until this issue is fixed. I really do miss the brightness control on the status bar
Cyanogen himself is aware of the issue. It doesn't get anymore validated than that.

Is ICS likely to be available on the Defy+? I'm thinking of buying one, but would like to know first.
Cheers
Google said, that all devices with stock Gingerbread, should got ICS ... but who knows ... I hope so. But I guess, it should have - Moto is part of Google, so why not.
Of course moto got bought by Google. But this doesn't mean Google will get involved to the politics of moto. I hope you'll understand what I'm triying to say xD.

As a rather advanced user (but not a dev), I can't see any benefit to the official 2.3.5 update. So far the only "features" I've experienced are the locked bootloader, and some odd touchscreen sensitivity.
I might have asked this elsewhere, but what is the benefit of this update, from a dev's point of view, such that it's now necessary for the latest ROMs?
Please offer your answer in plain English, but feel free to include relevant jargon, I'll understand it.
Thanks in advance...

Hi there.
I'm not a dev but I think it has something to-do about 2.6.35 kernel.
Sent from my u8800 using XDA App
It's slightly faster then .32 kernel especially in cm7 with the new adreno drivers and all. Other than that i do not see any difference as a non developer.

I for one don't see any difference, even with GPU performance.
Except that my touchscreen is extremely sensitive. Literally the only advantage it has for me is that I can use the latest ROMs here on XDA.
Would it not be possible to simply use this kernel with the stock firmware somehow? That way we'd have our /.cust_backup pink screen thing back ^_^

Ok, I'm definitively not going to read any further...
An advanced user that can't see any benefit on updating from 2.1 to 2.3 and it's only perception from the update is a couple of rants that people insist on spreading through this forum.
2.3.5 has better camera/video quality, HDR photos, SRS WOWHD sound, .35 kernel (way better than .32), better graphics drivers (nenamark2 = 29 fps --> more than optimus 2x, sensation XE, galaxy nexus...), it can play 720p videos from youtube desktop page without any lag, sms call reject menu, sending MMS with wifi and more When I upgraded to 2.3.5 I tought that I am going to switch to custom ROMs immediatly but after using it for a while I dont even think about switching to custom ROMs
I would say it is necessary. New AMSS, new libs, new kernel... All new ROMs will propably be sooner or later on the new kernel.
About locked bootloader, B518 release has it unlocked, you could flash that.
Thank you yannn007 and Blefish for clarifying.
However...

Le sigh.
Sorry about that... I wasn't clear on the my original post, and can understand why you've come to that conclusion. Please allow me to update myself:
I have installed the update, mostly so I could try the ROMs that need it to function, like the early CM9 port, and the latest CM7 and MIUI ROMs. (currently using Geno's latest CM7 build)
What I meant by "advanced user" was that I know what I'm doing, and (to a reasonable extent) how these devices work.
Anyone who had clear knowledge on the benefits of this update for use in CM7 could use jargon (or at least, not have to oversimplify or explain the technical bits) without me being totally bedazzled by it.
Having been using CM7 before I braved the official update, I also most definitely know the benefits and added features of Gingerbread versus Froyo (not 2.1 Eclair... )
I guess I haven't noticed the improvement in GPU performance, having not been very involved in GPU-intensive activities (my U8150 has no GPU at all, so I guess I'm still in the habit of avoiding those kinds of things)
(Also the u8150 benefits hugely with CM7)

Aha, this is exectly the kind of info I was looking for, thank you. My main puzzlement is now this:
While I'm okay with the locked bootloader (I'm generally careful when messing with /.cust_backup) and can accept the official update despite it...
Could the new kernel code not simply be included with an update, thus saving the bootloader interface? Or is the process of updating the kernel a lot more complex on the U8800 than it was with the U8150? Or perhaps some other factor that I don't quite understand?
Dang, I feel like a noob all over again

Hmm. I guess I didn't try the GPU stuff, as mentioned above in my post.
As far as the user experience was for me, there are some features in CyanogenMod that I just can't pass up, even despite the extra awesome I now know to be in the official software.
U8800 Pro owner here. The battery life with GB more than impressive comprared to what I had with Froyo. With GB it's not a big problem if I forget to charge the phone at the end of the day, it still has enough power to last one more day (having in mind I won't play or use navigation). With Froyo the phone was nearly dead by the end of the day even with 100% charge in the morning.
So, make your choice.
After that many people ask me to compile a version of phenomenal (an undervolted speedmod kernel) for galaxy note, I decided to do it.

First I'd like know your undervolted experience, to know what voltages do you use?

Considering the issues with emmc and stability, I would say that Sammy is not even close to providing a correct ICS rom.
Let them just release the drivers, after all here at XDA we have all the good devs to cook us a good set of kernels for TW or AOSP roms, don't we?
That is just wishful thinking of course;-)

Please make one for ICS.
There's a missing hole in my device, it cries out for SmartAssv2 governor on an optimized kernel. (Frequency is 400Mhz under/1.4GHz over, we don't have the voltage option yet, sigh)
I use this daily (the ones that say current, the saved ones are the original voltages) with abyss kernel 100% stable and I usually set the min speed to 400MHz and Max to 1400MHz or 1700MHz depending on my needs.
I can lower all voltages by 0.025v but then I'll get a couple crashes a week so i prefer to keep the voltages just one step higher.

I agree. We really need some good ICS metals. Apart from the CM9 kernel and DAFUQ, I do not see anything else here.
And after Entropy's warning not to flash leaked kernels, I am beginning to wonder if there is some other good kernel for ICS ROMs.
We would be grateful if make this an ICS kernel. We can live with one less good GB kernel /methinks

Does chinese leaks we must forget. Nothing wrong with thise kernels if you have a chinese Note. Look at sgs2 forum. Already samsung released there the sources and there are 5 ore more custom kernels. So samsung is doing a great job for them releasing so soon sources. We have to be patient and not start making cm9 with sources from sgs2. So stupid.

True but SGS2 sales are at least four times more than that if the note. The note is like a flagship device but its not getting the best treatment yet. We can't expect the sources to be out before the official ICS release.
I am just happy we even have official CM9 support. The problem though, is because DAFUQ supports only TW ROMs :-| and we have no good kernels (except leak ones) for the AOSP/AOKP ROMs.
So much good ROM development here for AOSP. Yet, no real safe kernels for em yet. Pity!
He's back! Another robertberma anti-spirit comment.
Excuse me for the intro, but most of the work here at XDA started with hacking and making open sourced stuff out of closed source material.
Indeed we already have a few good GB kernels, and an additional developer on ICS would be greatly appreciated. ICS is coming soon, and considering the time spent on tuning a kernel, I think that it would be more productive to start working on an ICS kernel than on GB.
However if this GB kernel is a first step to get knowledge of the Note specifics and followed by an ICS one, it's all good.

Forgive me if this question is really nooby.
Is it possible for a custom ICS kernel to support both TW and AOSP? Are their frameworks too different?
Most (or maybe all) of the GB kernels I see here are for GB. They may be themed but I still see the TW framework everywhere.
If possible, wouldnt it be nice to make a kernel that supports both?

Hahaha I think it will not help developing ics kernel by develop a gb kernel. I just say we have to be patient and wait for sourses to continue develop a ics kernel that is save. We have great devs for aosp and cm9 roms but there hands are tied behind there backs without sourses. Now they use stupid chinese **** thats not save. We getting of topic here.

Hello,
I've been using CM7 and now CM9-NIGHTLY-120711-Defy ROM, but, frankly, the phone is next to useless. The system/ROM on my phone is slow, unresponsive, buggy. So before I make crazy moves (like buying an old iphone) I would like to ask you for advice.
Is there any Android 4+ ROM for Defy that just works fine? No slowdowns, usable HWA, responsive... I really hate Motorola for not unlocking bootloaders (and won't buy any Moto ever).
I will very much appreciate your help. I cannot switch phone now (actually I've got two phones, one is Defy green lens the other Defy red lens).
