I have a NC with the 1.2 software update. I created an SD CM7 image using the XDA thread and currently have mod version: CyanogenMod-7.1.0-RC0-encore-KANG running. Once I booted up I set up wifi, intalled and set up Gapps and all is well. I then went in and grabbed the new 2.6.32 kernel (update-cm7-dalingrin-2.6.32-sdcard-051311.zip). Shut down and then removed the sd card from my nook, attached it to my computer w/ a card reader. I renamed the original uImage file to uImage.original. Back to the downloaded .zip on my computer, I opened the file and drag/dropped the uImage from the .zip to my sd card. Unmounted the card from my computer, put it in the nook and booted up. Boots up great, CM settings confirm the new kernel as OC to 1200 is now available. However, in Settings>Wireless&Networks>Wi-Fi there is a problem. Under the word Wi-Fi where it would normally say 'scanning' or 'connected to...' mine simply says 'Error'. Clicking the check box briefly makes it change to 'turning on...' but then goes right back to 'Error'. Did I miss a step in upgrading to the new kernel here? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I love the responsiveness with the OC kernel but with no wi-fi it's like having 22" chrome rims on a 1979 pinto.
Thanks in advance for any help!
You should have used the .29 kernel not the .32. The .32 is for the new beta build of CM7. The current stables and nightlies are still on the .29 kernel.

the most recent .29 kernel is from 04242011 correct? I tried this one using the same steps as above (dragging/dropping uImage onto my SD card) and the Nook will not boot. It goes to the loading screen, then the word 'Android' appears in the lower left (holding it in landscape mode), shortly after the only thing that happens is a vertical dash appears in the upper right corner (when holding it portrait) and then nothing else happens. Am I using the correct process for updating the kernel?
Thank you again for your time!
I believe you will need to re-flash the CM7 ROM (7.0.3 is the latest stable so you should consider using it anyway) and then flash the 04242001 OC kernel.
Honestly I very surprised it booted at all with the 2.6.32 kernel on that ROM.
I'll give that a shot this evening and post back. I appreciate the response!
Well not much luck.
I formatted the SD card, downloaded and wrote the generic SD image to it. Downloaded CM7 7.0.3 and drag/dropped it onto the SD card. Put the card in the nook, booted and set up wi-fi. Shut down and took the card out of the nook and placed it into the computers card reader. Drag/dropped gapps.zip onto the SD card, ejected the card, put it back in the nook and booted it into recovery. Let it do it's thing and shut down. Boot up and set up my google account, update apps etc. Shut the nook down, eject the SD card and put it back in the card reader on the computer. Downloaded the "update-CM7-dalingrin-OC-sd-042411" and opened it. Opened the SD card via the card reader on my computer and renamed the uImage to uImage.original then drag/dropped the uImage from the downloaded kernel file to the SD card. Eject the card, put in the nook and boot. It hangs now at a black screen with a vertical dash in the upper right corner (when holding it portrait). Is my method for updating the kernel correct or should i drop the entire .zip onto the sd card and boot via recovery? Your help is once again greatly appreciated.
Solved: So i went ahead and dropped the entire .zip (update-CM7-dalingrin-OC-sd-042411) on the SD card, booted into recovery and bam, it found and updated the kernel, rebooted, over clocked to 1300 and my first quadrant score hit 2428. Ty all for your help!
I'm looking for some help with my nook color. I have read multiple threads and I'm looking for the best solution for my situation. I'm currently running version 1.2 on my unmodified nook. When I boot my nook I would like to have two options, the primary option would to boot an unmodified standard version of the nook OS. The second option would boot CM7. I have a 2GB sd card I can modify in any way, however I do not want to modify the nook OS at all. I'm looking for simple instructions on how to do this without modifying/erasing the current nook OS. Could someone reply with the xda link that would work best with my situation? Thanks!
I was in your shoes last month and it can be very confusing and intimidating to get CM7 up and running. I will try my best to help you out.
First of all, the most important thing is the SD itself. Around 99% people here have had sucess with Sandisk Class 4 SDs in 8 or 16 gig. Other brands, even with higher class ratings do not perform as well due to small block random write speeds being too slow.
Here is the thread regarding this:

After you have a suitable SD card, then the instructions on this thread will take you through the steps to creating a CM7 run from SD system:
[ROM][CM7] [v1.3] Size-agnostic SD Card image and CM7 installer for SD Cards.

There are also videos on youtube that will help you through the process.
I used these videos as a reference to help clear up the parts I wasn't sure of.

The one part that really gave me trouble was getting the NC to boot into recovery mode.
I would recommend the size-agnostic install thread from the dev section...

This will guide you through installing CM7 onto your microSD card. In the latest CM7 versions, if you press the 'n' button while the boot logo is displayed, you will go into the boot menu where you can select to load from emmc or the sd card, including the options to boot normally or go into recovery mode.
Note that I had toyed with one of the dual boot options previously, but I found out later that they don't seem to be recommended since they use a custom uboot. The basic functionality was rolled into the standard CM7, as described above.
Ok so I did some research and got the question answered about the difference between the two.
My next question is:
To update to the 7.1 encore file on my nook color do I place it in the same place I had put the update for the froyo and delete the froyo update file? then when I boot into recovery then choose the update file 7.1? As far as the nightlies I have no clue how to do those. Are those just through the ROM manager app? or added to the sd card nightly?
I notice the file for the 7.1 says update so do I need something before that to ensure that everything runs smooth? Here is what is on my sd card as of current:
Old boot file
manual nooter 4.6.16
mlo
u-boot.bin
uImage
uRamdisk
update froyo1.2 file
Thank you for any help!
It isn't clear from your post if you are wanting to run CM 7.1 from a card or install it on the Nook's internal memory. All my advice assumes that you want to keep internal (emmc) running rooted BN and run CM 7.1 from a card.
The word "update" in the filename will cue verygreen's installer that the file is supposed to be installed. One thing though, are all those files visible on the card when you remove it from the Nook and read it on your computer? Normally the boot file, nooter, and update should disappear after they are applied. You can try removing them and adding the CM 7.1 file and booting into recovery. If that doesn't work you need to follow the instructions in this thread. Installing nightlies just involves dumping the new file onto the card and rebooting into recovery.
Again, this all assumes that you have the rooted BN OS internally and intend to install CM 7.1 on a flash card. If you're trying to dual boot, either from internal memory or from your card, I can't help you. You'll have to try the dual boot threads. Good luck!
Files on sd card
Yes these files are visible on my sd card after they are booted onto my nook. All the times that I have updated they have always been visible once I remove the card. Does that mean something? I also do want the files to run internally on my nook not from my card. So since I want to do that then do I take out the nooters or just not worry about them? And just load the update cm 7.1? Also the nooter I am running is the 4.5.18 because at the time the (a month and a half ago) the 4.6.16 since the market and google kept force closing so went back to the 4.5.18 or is there an update to the latest one that fixes this?
I soooo appreciate the help!

hey guys, i browsed quite a while to see if there was a thread with a similar question but couldn't get a solid answer.
just got a nook color, version 1.3.0. my goal was to get [CM7.2-RC1] MiRaGe - KANG build of CyanogenMod on it, so my first step was putting UNooter on my micro sd.
after rebooting my nook color with the unooted sd, my nook still looked stock, but there was a menu asking me to choose "Home" or "Zeam Launcher." every time i
hit my N button, i get the complete action using Home or Zeam Launcher as well. I took out the sd card, and my options are the same- did i install completely internally? Was i not supposed to UNoot at all, and just put the CM Mod zip on my sd?
not sure where to go from here- maybe make a recovery card and retry? any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks!
So you got the NC 1.3.0. First step, MAKE SURE it is the NC, not the NT.
You want to get CM7.2-RC1 KANG. OK, next step, where do you intend to run that custom ROM from? eMMC or uSD?
When you decided to run a custom ROM, there is NO NEED to root it first.
Instructions or help will follow when you provide enough info and what you try to accomplish.

thanks for the quick response! i was trying to get CM7.2-RC1 KANG on my uSD. so i can just put the cm7 file on my sd card and reboot and forget UNooter altogether? eventually i'd like to get eMMC back to stock, but i'm not really concerned about that right now.

If you are just looking to run KANG on your SD card, then just follow the directions HERE. You will need to rename the KANG zip file to update-cm- when you put it on your SD card.
That's it.
GMpower has provided the link.
Following it and you should be good to go.
Note:leapinar (spelling?) does have a better (more storage) version of the image. Search in that thread.
I just got a refurbished Nook Color. Seems to work fine but you have to push the power button hard to click it.
Haven't rooted, installed roms, anything yet. But I can't get it to boot from my SD card. I have a 4GB (class-4) microSD card. (I have checked the sdcard for bad blocks using the linux "badblocks" command.) I have followed instructions detailed here:
glasskeys. /2011/06/27/how-to-make-a-bootable-sd-card-running-cyanogenmod-for-the-nook-color/
and here [note - new users are forbidden from posting links here - in the above and below links, I left out the "com" after the dot in the website address]:
nookdevs. /Nookie_Honeycomb:_Burning_a_bootable_SD_card
. I use Ubuntu Linux 10.11 "dd" command to write the .img files to the SD card. However, once I write the SD card and put it into my Nook, the nook won't turn on. Just won't turn on. As soon as I take the card out and try again, I can boot up the nook to the locked-down, walled-garden stock Android on the device.
Help! Is something wrong with my SD card, or with my device? I have a 2GB microSD card somewhere I can find if I need to...
Re:
Can anyone help me find the source of the problem? Is it my SDcard, my card-burning technique (i followed the dd instructions word for word), my computer or is something wrong with my Nook?
What I might suggest is to discard your original source of instructions and start fresh. Search the xda forum for clear information on 1) proper mSD card to use; 2) proper card burning software; 3) the most appropriate rom(s) to use for what you want your Nook to do for you, and 4) if necessary, very explicit instructions to troubleshoot any problems you may encounter with your processes. I'll not point to specific locations here, because I'm not sure what you actually want to do, But the search engine is very thorough and the threads are numerous.
Good luck. I'm sure you'll be quite content with your newly rooted/rommed NC.

I have a section in my tips thread linked in my signature that deals with bootable SDs, but I'm not sure it's going to help you. I was helping another user that had the same exact problem where the Nook would not power on with the SD in. One of the things I had him do was fully charge his Nook. I can't remember how he resolved it though, if he did. But I suspect a faulty Nook or SD. Pins bent or something.

Thanks. It's worth noting that, if I get an SD with normal data (photos, etc) on it and put it in while the nook is booted normall, the nook can read the card and see what's on there. So the nook can read cards. That doesn't mean the boot-up bits aren't screwy.... this is refurbished.
Update
Update: I got it to work. However, it's quite laggy, possibly because it's Honeycomb on a class 2 (low IO speed) card. Can anyone point me to a super-slimed android (don't care what version) .img file I can put on my card?

Oh, do not use Honeycomb. It is terrible. Use CM 7.2. They just this weekend came out with a stable version. Cyanogenmod.com. Look for encore stable. And your class 2 should work great.

Let me +1 the latest and greatest CM 7.2. I was using a supposedly faster card with 7.1 on an NC and I also experienced a lot of lagging.
Switching to a class 4 SanDisk card and going to 7.2 fixed the problem. Since I did both at the same time, I can't tell you what exactly made the difference but if installing 7.2 does not fix the issue, try changing your card.
I followed these instructions which installs CM7 on your SD card so you can dual boot if necessary. Also, this has the same exact info written in a slightly less techie language. (I am not sure why he is trying to use the hardware keys to reboot into the recovery mode when it can be done easily from within CM7.)
Good luck!
I know this is a super old thread, but it seems like an appropriate place to post. I've got three Nook Color tablets from my niece and nephews. I flashed them with Mirage Cyanogenmod 7.2 via CWM on an SD card. Once I got the SD setup, I went through two of them in 10 minutes total. No sweat. I installed two fresh, out-of-the-box SD cards in each tablet, which left the modded, CWM SD card untouched after flashing the first two. The third one was missing for several weeks. They just found that one. They dropped off the third tablet along with the modded SD card, which was sealed in a ziplock bag, to me. I installed the card into the third Nook Color, which was untouched after flashing the first two, and the third Nook Color booted right past the SD card and into the stock OS. I've reflashed the same .img file and others, including verygreen's onto this SD card. It simply refuses to boot from the SD. I've tried writing the .img file from WinImage, and WinImage32 through the SD slot on my laptop, an SD card adapter via USB, and through the nook itself as a mass storage drive. I'm stumped. Any thoughts?
On a side note, I don't have access to the first two to confirm the SD card is still on track, nor do I, at this point, have a spare SD card to troubleshoot with. Those are my next steps to take, but I am curious what the experts might have to suggest in the mean time. Thanks in advance, and I'll post my solution, if I solve this.
Are you sure the third one is a Nook Color? It could be a Nook Tablet. They look the same, but the Tablet has a silver bezel instead of black. Those cards will not boot on a Tablet.

My first thought was "that's a ridiculous question. Of course it's a Color!", but then I peeled the cover off, and the bezel is indeed silver. Looks like I have some more reading to do. Thanks for saving me a TON of grief and frustration.
Just to follow up, I followed the instructions for flashing Cyanogenmon on the Nook TABLET, thank you Leapinlar, and everything is good. Thanks again.
