Hello everyone!!
I'm debating on what to get. I'm not sure whether to purchase a Kindle Fire or a regular Android Tablet like the ASUS Transformer.
One of the main things holding me back is that the Kindle Fire only has 8GB of storage and no microSD slot to increase that.
Would you buy the Kindle Fire again after owning it?
Thanks!

I only bought the Fire because I was short on cash and only needed a tablet to develop software, connect to computers remotely, read books, watch a couple movies, listen to a couple music and browse the web. So far, the Fire has been doing those pretty well.
I'd definitely buy a full fledged tablet like the iPad 2 or Asus Transformer if I could spare the cash though but I definitely like my Kindle and want to keep it!
It just depends on your needs man but sometimes. If you don't need to do too many things on a tablet, just get the Kindle man it's only $200.
As above, I only bought the KF because it was a cheap way to get a durable small tablet for Internet access. As a Kindle E-Reader it's rubbish, bright backlit display and short battery life make it very poor compared to a regular Kindle.
if you have the money, I would get a full Android tablet. You can do everything the kindle can do on an Android tablet, but you can't do everything on a kindle fire that you can do on an android tablet.
That said, the Kindle Fire is excellent for streaming video, reading books, light game play, and general web surfing.

I'm trying to decide between the Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet. There's an awful lot of misinformation and biased reviews out there, which is making the decision much harder. I'm trying to boil it down to pluses and minuses with ratings that take into account what's important to me, using only verified information, updated as I discover it.Right now it's pretty heavily leaning towards the Nook, but I feel I'm missing some factors.
Feature Fire rating Nook rating Winner App store (Rating this low because you can install Amazon Appstore on the Nook with a bit of work, and the whole Android Marketplace on either with more work and risk) 3 2 Kindle Battery life: kindle=8hrs Nook=11.5hrs 2 4 Nook Boot loader: Unlocked on the Kindle, still working on the Nook 4 2 Kindle Buttons: Nook has hard home and volumen buttons 2 4 Nook Can arrange items on shelves and create shelves 1 4 Nook Content formats: Nook supports more video and ebook formats 2 3 Nook Durability: The Nook has a border that protects the screen, Kindle is all glass up front 3 4 Nook External storage: Kindle has 5GB cloud-based, Nook has up to 32GB MicroSD 1 5 Nook Hackability: Kindle: easy to root but modifies the system. Nook: Can boot off the card leaving the original OS in tact 2 4 Nook Keyboard: Nook keys are further apart, Kindle keys are bigger. Neither offers alternative input 1 2 Nook Microphone: Nook has one, Kindle does not. Skype does not yet work though. Bump up if it does. 1 2 Nook Music and video content: Both have Hulu/Netflix/Pandora, Amazon has its own 4 3 Kindle Onboard storage: Kindle has 8.5GB for out-of-market, Nook has 1GB 4 3 Kindle Price: Kindle=$200, Nook=$250, plus you'll want a microSD card 3 2 Kindle RAM: Kindle has 512M, Nook has 1GB 3 5 Nook Screen rotation on all apps: Kindle does, but Nook has some apps that don't 3 2 Kindle Screen: Nook has no air gap, less glare 2 4 Nook Sideloading apps: Kindle: You can email as attachments Nook: ??? RESEARCH Sideloaded apps DO NOT show up on the default launcher 3 2 Kindle Streaming video: Nook reportedly streams Netflix better (multiple sources) 3 4 Nook Web browser: Kindle's Silk browser renders desktop version most times, pretty fast 4 3 Kindle TOTAL 51 64
Basically, the Nook is superior in hardware for $50 extra. Software-wise, they're both similar (Fire edging slightly better in most reviews, as well as the Nook having a 1GB file limit for non-B&N files, despite its' higher internal memory).
Fire's ecosystem is superior to the Nook.
If you're looking for hardware-only to make it into a full-fledged tablet, go for the Nook. If you're looking for easy media consumption, go for the Fire.
Also I would say if you do plan to hack it, you would have to look at two things one nook having a locked bootloader but has more space and sdcard, while fire has unlocked bootloader with only 6gb of usable memory.

I had no say in it. Wife wanted a fire, she got it, and then got me one while she was there.
I just heard it had droid and was happy with that.
Later I read about the nook, and I don't like second guessing myself. Only perk I saw was the sd card slot, but if you really use it more for what it was intended, thats more than enough material. As long as I don't go crazy with video, I'll be ok.
also brand new I connected to my desktop and reported 5gb available, so ~3 is being hijacked.
I used to read ebooks 10 years ago on a palm zire. Isilo files, plain .txt, so I'm used to low space.
Its the ability to read comics decently that got me hooked. I read for 2-3 hours straight last night .

Actually, that's not a reason to go for the Nook - the Nook's locked bootloader kills it.
Isn't it a bit early to claim the Nook Tablet can boot off of the SD card? It was true for the Nook Color, but may not be true for the Tablet.

They're working on it, but it's true you can't take it for granted that you will be able to boot off the MicroSD card anytime soon. While I am a hacker at heart, I'm OK with that. For that money I don't need it to work 100% like a real Android device, but I do need access to may more progams than the Nook currently has.
Without solving the boot loader problem, they already have the Amazon Appstore running on the Nook with a little work, and the whole Android Marketplace with a lot more work. Likewise, I think I read they got the Nook store on the Fire (for unknown reasons). So "the ecosystem" is now a lot less important than it was at launch time.
I appreciate all your feedback so far. Thank you.
I have both. I have the fire for myself and the nook for my sister. We both like the fire over all.
The fire feels better in our hands and when using it as a tablet the kindle just plays nicer. The nook has a worse keyboard and doesn't have dedicated buttons for back and menu and home. This makes it quite annoying when using things outside their "eco" system.
The only bad thing we could find is that is doesn't like the epub format and the nook does. But we downloaded an app to take of that so we had no problems what so ever.
I would go with the fire and never look back.
Is the KF a great device even if I do not get an Amazon Prime subscription, which I do not want to do?
I searched through this sub forum and couldn't find an answer. I am debating getting the KF, NT, or the Acer A100. All have their upsides, however the KF is the only one that has custom roms at this time. I do not for see the NT getting much due to the HD Netflix restrictions, and the Acer A100 has a locked bootloader as well. However, the A100 will get an official ICS upgrade, but has horrendous battery life. Plus it just feels a little odd in my hands.
I would root the KF, possibly use the cloud services, and really want something to use on the cruise I am going on, which will have no internet connectivity. Streaming is great, but I would like the option to rip a couple of my dvd's, place some music on the device, read books, and play some games without having to worry about space.
keep in mind that the KF only has 8gb of internal storage, and not all of that is usable. i have mine set up with CM7 and read pdf textbooks and mobi kindle books through the kindle app on the android market.
Can only speak from my perspective. I am running CM7 from the KF forums on mine and do not miss amazon prime whatsoever.
I have netflix, so I don't miss Amazon prime since they have the same crappy movies. I've also loaded up CM7 and am SOOO much happier with my KF than stock. The choice is yours and how much you want to tweak it and how devoted to amazon prime VOD you are.
Yes, Prime is in no way needed to get the most out of the Fire. It's nice that the video streaming is integrated, but for me video streaming not even a major draw of the Fire to begin with.
I have the fire and the NT. I also have amazon prime but the library is too old for that to be a factor. The biggest difference between these two devices is the performance. I know the specs already show that but you may not notice how much slower the fire really is without something to compare it too. I like both but I've been recommending the nook tablet for the extra storage (once its made usable) and faster performance. It really is the better device unless you care about amazon integration.
Long time ipad owner.
I was hoping someone that owned both devices would show up. Thank you for the input. CM7 was the only thing that attracted me to the Fire. Sideloading apps and using the Google and Amazon markets is also available as well on the NT. Both are great devices, but I wanted to hear some feedback on some questions I had before jumping on either device.
KF is defintely work it without Prime. Amazon's video library is still pretty lackluster..comparable to netflix. If I can't get the Kindle Owner's Lending Library I may change my tune, but for now, ICS is too good to pass up.

But i thought we were a ways away from a working ice port?
I guess the big question that I am trying to figure out, is if the performance of the KF to the NT is worth $50. With CM7, I am betting that it is marginal at that point. It would be great to see a side by side comparison.
Ok.....i had a samsung tab 10.1.....too big for me. Got the 8.9 samsung tab. Im still not completley sure its what i want. Basically I want to use it for reading books, games for my 3 year old and light internet and email. My phone does everything the tab does, so I really dont need a full tablet.
What do you guys uaes your kindle fire for?

For your intended uses the Kindle Fire will work great, actualy I prefer the OMAP 4430 to the Tegra 2. The Kindle Fire is not a cheap tablet, it is every bit as capable as any other Android Tablet (except the transformer prime) it merely lacks some extra features - 3G, Bluetooth, microSD, GPS. It does also lacks Google services and Market, unless you root and add that capability, If you don't have a need for that stuff then the Kindle Fire is a great choice.
Just to let you know it is easy to root. I used burrito root

Just surffing the internet.
Kindle fire. Dont like the over-satuated screen color of samsung's devices and the IPS screen of kindle fire is more natural.

Basically everything you listed.
I have a kindle fire and it does everything you want. however as much as i like it, still seems to be missing something. At CES, ASUS introduced the MeMO 370T which seems like the best of all worlds in terms of android tablets and supposedly priced @ $249.
I'd go for the Galaxy Tab Plus (7in).
I miss a lot bluetooth/sdcard
But today they announced that there'll be a new asus 7in tegra3 tablet for $250. So I'd wait for that.

FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU... Now I've gotta get that, too?!?!? Meh $250 isn't too bad. Kinda wished I'd held out a few more months. Guess my CM7 Kindle Fire will have to do for now...
That Asus one looks droolicious, but don't bet on it for a couple of months.. At least that's what I've learned from experience. The most capable and best bang-for-your-buck tablet right now is the Kindle Fire (with the ICS ROM of course).
My niece loves playing games on it and the web browsing experience for me is awesome. Sounds like you want the same use out of it.

Absolutely.. I heard about that during CES & am getting this device the second it hits the virtual shelves. You can't beat that. And quazzie/5-core?? Srsly?!
I play a lot of 3D games on mine, read books, browse the web, listen to music, watch videos, and instant message.
Hi all. I wanna buy new tablet and I stucked here for two is Kindle Fire and Novo 7. And I wanna ask which is better, if Kindle Fire, why ? if Novo 7, why ?

It depends how comfortable you are with flashing and modding. You'll have to do this on the Kindle Fire to get the Android Market/Google Play on it as you won't be able to use the Amazon Appstore at all being outside the US.
The Ainovo comes with ICS where as the Kindle Fire ICS has a few bugs such as hardware video acceleration. I do like the Kindle Fire Stock ROM and have flashed Paul Obrien's ROM. I use the Android market for any of my app needs, to hell with Amazon and their walled garden.
I'm a fan of the Kindle Fire tbh. It's a solid tablet with easy to find accessories. I just don't think it's for "Joe consumer" that lives outside of the US if they don't want to mod their tablet.
Hope that helps.
On the one hand yes I want to change android, develop it. You know installing custom roms ant etc. But on the other hand Novo 7 reads SD cards have HDMI connection but big minus is that you cant change anything and therebis no Google Play. But it is cheaper than Kindle. So I am really mest uo but I think I will buy Kindle from Ebay.co.uk couse just from there they are sending to Lithuania

I personally think the Fire is better...unless you just have to have the camera. The 800x480 resolution of the Novo would drive me bonkers.

Kindle Fire all the way! Dual core, Amazon services, Gorilla glass, its all good. Plus, tons of mods!
Which Novo 7? There are several.... Build quality and support are always going to be an issue with Ainol....might get lucky and the unit is fine...or have dead pixels and screen seperation like folks are getting with the Novo 7 Aurora...

^What they said. Also, what was mentioned above... unless you absolutely want a camera that you'll use sporadically, then sure go for the other. The Kindle's a nice little toy.
I chosed Ainol Novo 7 Aurora, which have 1 gb processor, micro sd slot, hdmi out, IPS screen (same as iPad 2) and 1080p HD quality. and I think it is better than Kindle also you get 1 year warranty and it cost less and it have orginal ICS with Google Play.
Kindle Fire
You will have much more ROMs to choose from for the Kindle Fire. It is supposed to be the second most popular tablet at this point. And if you need HWA you can always use CM7 until ICS is a little more stable. It might be a little more money, but you get a device that you will be able to find accessories for as well as a plethora of ROMs
Additional Storage
Kindle Fire does NOT allow you to add any storage. At 8GB you may very well find yourself extremely limited when attempting to add media.
Ainovo Novo 7 on the other hand has up to 32GB expandable storage, which means you can have unlimited storage because you can also switch out differnt cards. Say you want 32GB of music on one MicroSD card, then you can put other things on another card. Even one 32GB MicroSD is probably fine, but 8 or 16GB is certainly not sufficient.
p.s. ICS is perfectly stable.
I got a Kindle Fire HD the other day - at first I loved it but the mods amazon have done to android are starting to annoy me now. I've rooted it and installed another home screen (go launcher HD) but getting simple things done involves messing about and hacking that I would rather not have to do. I'm considering buying a Nexus7 now - not sure if i'll be able to take the kindle back for a refund or just have to take a financial hit there. My question is, is it worth doing? Is the Nexus a lot better?
Cheers

I went from the regular Kindle Fire to the Nexus 7 [gave the Fire to my mom...]. I was torn between the Fire HD and the Nexus, but decided on the Nexus to give me a full Android experience. I can still use the Kindle app to read books and Amazon's MP3 app to give me access to my music which is all stored on Amazon's cloud. For me, this was the right choice.

The Nexus 7 will give you all the pure Android experience, and all the freedom that goes with it, but you may find the screen on the Kindle Fire HD to be better:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33755719&postcount=68
I have a Nexus 7 and it was a no-brainer for me. The kindle HD is nice, but I like the full Google experience. Plus you're more likely to see updates because you won't have to go through proprietary companies before Google pushes an update. I got my wife the HD and she loves it. But she reads mostly and she likes Amazon Prime's free book per month thing. We compared video playback using Netflix. The HD was just a tad brighter, but the colors and resolution looked better in the Nexus. The HD is a nice tablet...but if you like customization and care about updates - the Nexus is the way to go.
There may be someone like you that had a Nexus and wants the HD...try CL to see if someone will trade. Otherwise, sell the HD (you should still be able to get a good price) and if you have some Xbox out PlayStation games you don't want, trade them in at GameStop and use the credit towards a Nexus. Yes, they sell the Nexus there. That's where I got mine and used the game credit to get the 16GB version.
Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone - I think I'll go for the Nexus and either sell the kindle or give it to a family member - Guess you'll be seeing a lot more of me around this section once I get it
Been comparing these two for ages.
Differences are:
1. Build quality. Kindle appears to be a better build (I've used both).
2. Screen. Kindle is better, especially for reading and at different angles
3. WiFi. Kindle is dual band and is faster
4. Sound. Kindle is dolby stereo and better
5. Innards / CPU. Nexus has a faster CPU and GPU, with some games specifically optimised for it. Kindle I used appeared to have significant lag at times.
6. OS. Kindle uses a skinned version of an earlier version of Android. It cannot do everything the Nexus can and is not as compatible with things the Nexus is. The Nexus is likely to get the latest android updates, the kindle may never get them.
7. Play Store: The Kindle uses its own store and has less apps in it. Many apps will not work with the Kindle.
8. Google Play Music: This is not supported currently on the Kindle
9. Camera. The camera on the Kindle cannot be used as a camera as no app currently exists for it. This is not the case with the Nexus
10. GPS. The Kindle does not have a GPS in it (Kindle Fire HD does, but has no apps to use it as yet)
11. HDMI Out: The Kindle has this. The Nexus does not.
12. Charger. The Nexus comes with a charger. The kindle you have to buy one seperatley or use a slower USB to microusb charger.
13. Size. The Kindle is a little larger. This makes it harder to hold in one hand or pocket easily. However, it gives a nice bezel to hold while reading
14. Battery. Kindle battery life is on paper slightly better than the Nexus. (11.5 vs 9.5 hrs)
15. NFC. Nexus has it. Kindle does not.
16. Magnetometer. Nexus has it. Kindle does not
17. Bluetooth. Nexus has it. Kindle does not - bit odd leaving that out.
So... the Nexus is better, but possibly not as well built and does not have as good sound or screen. Its also possibly going to be stuck on its current OS level and not get all the new and nice upgrades. Your favourite apps may not work on it.
If it annoys you, then you will be happy with the N7!!!!
I was in the exact same shoes and I'm extremely happy I made the switch. No matter how you say it, the KFHD is nothing but a gimped android device with the amazon system running, including using custom launcher.
Dev's are working on a boot strap for the KFHD but it's still in early development and not to mention waiting for (stable) rom.
You'll be happy with the N7 out of the box.
