[Q] Any new W7 Phones for Verizon? - Trophy General

Please excuse me if this has been asked before; I'm a Droid guy and don't usually hang out in the Windows area.
I have to get a Windows 7 phone from Verizon for work, and the only thing they have available is the Trophy. I really want something that has 4G and tethering capability, so I don't think this phone is for me. Does anyone know if there is a new phone coming? Why is Verizon's W7 phone offering so limited?
Appreciate it.

Verizon has publicly stated that 4G will be a requirement for any future Windows phones. Microsoft has stated it is working on 4G for its next major operating system release. Unfortunately a large release like that probably isnt coming for another 3 months or more.
However the trophy does do teathering. I just made the jump from Android to the HTC trophy and I could not be happier, I suggest you do it. The simplicity and reliability of WP7 far outweigh not having 4G

Thank you for the response. The Windows phone is going to be replacing my BlackBerry, and an Etch-A-Sketch would be an upgrade from that POS!
I'm going to be working with a development team for WM7 apps and I need the phone to test functionality/usability. So you say the Trophy can tether - how do you get that set up? Our corporate Verizon support rep is the one that said it couldn't be done.

I'd like to know more about the ability to tether the Trophy as well!

Out of box, Verizon Trophy does not support tethering!
However, the SparkW (Verizon Trophy) was recently HSPL'ed, and DFT rom is in testing and supports tethering (where as the stock software does not support it).
Tethering works fantastic on the phone with this rom, and from my investigations, simply swapping the wireless driver from the GSM version should enable tethering (I think a few policy xml's have to carry over too.. I'm still tinkering).
If you get a Verizon Trophy, private message mwang for a link to the rom, and read my HOWTO guide on installing HSPL.

Is it flashable?

Hi all,
I've successfully flashed my genuine T-Mobile HTC SP5m in the past and now I'm about to buy this "china made" version of the HTC Touch and I'd like to know if I'll be able of flashing this "fake" HTC Touch to the most recent ROM available, e.g. WM6.5 instead of the pre-loaded WM6.1?
Here's the "fake" HTC Touch I'm about to buy: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.21069
In the Discussions section of the DX website, a user is asking if this phone is ROM/firmware upgradeable and here's the answer provided, is it true??

Without a new ROM image from the manufacturer - forget it.
Simonetti2010 Tuesday, July 20, 2010 8:58 AM
You might want to try http://forum.xda-developers.com/
The guys at XDA Developers have up-to-date ROMs for almost every WM phones released.
CosmoVitelli Tuesday, July 20, 2010 1:26 PM
Wrong. XDA Dev is focussed on genuine HTC phones, and trying to install a HTC ROM will make any of the chinese copies become a useless brick.

CosmoVitelli is right. I would never by a clone, nor try flashing one. Just spend the extra to buy a ligit phone and have the ability to use XDA!
Thanks for your reply. That's what I finally did, I bought an official HTC XV6900 at half the DX price off eBay, it's new Verizon phone in an opened box. Can't wait to receive it.
I'll have to flash it cause my provider here in Quebec is Fido and not Verizon.
Which firmware with WM6.5 would you guys suggest me?
Thanks all,
highmighty
Thats a vogue, so CDMA, you'll need to head there. They do have FroYo android roms running on it. 6.5 - not sure what roms exist for it.
Are you sure that phone will work for you. It is CDMA, from what I understand, Fido (Rogers) are GSM? I only ask as the DX link was a GSM phone.
Damnit... true, Verizon uses CDMA and my Fido carrier is using GSM, what's next? Reselling the phone as soon as I receive it? I've read somewhere that it is possible to use a CDMA phone on a GSM network, that there are some agreements made between the 2 now, that it will connect to at least the EDGE network but not 3G, etc? Is that true, are you aware of such a thing?
Thank you for your time,
highmighty
I'm not aware of such a thing, we don't seem to have any CDMA here in england, everything is Sim Card GSM Based.
In my honest opinion though, I don't think it will even connect to the GPRS network as there would be nothing telling it teh details (your sim card is not present)
EOF then I guess
Anyone interested by a new HTC CDMA Touch XV6900 currently locked to Verizon??
I'd recommend going to the xda marketplace section in general, you make have some luck there
Could always try to sweet talk the seller into taking a return?
Sorry that I ruined your hopes

LG E900 US Version Sold at Amazon for $239

I am a US At&T customer and wanted anyone opinion of the LG E900 on the AT&T network. I don't want to upgrade or change my data plan but I do want this phone.
1. Does this phone support 3G on AT&t in US (specifically CA)
2. Does WP7 support tethering yet? Is there a hack for tethering.
3. Does this phone have NO-DO yet?
4. Will this phone get Mango?
5. Love my HD2, but want to try WP7. What user experiences can you talk about
6. Anything I should know before purchasing this phone?
Thank you very much!!!!
KJ
I cannot help you with 1 and 2 unfortunately, hope someone else will.
3. Yes.
4. Yes, and there's simple hacks around to help you install the Mango beta right away if you can't wait.
5. I was an Android user since 1.5, and I've also had iPhones in the past. The WP7 user experience is simply better unless you cannot live without some kind of application that isn't available in WP7.
6. At that price, it's definitely a great purchase, not much more to say
1. If this is truly the Canadian/Mexican version of the E900 which is the E900h it will work with AT&T as they use the same bands.
2. Yes there is a hack for tethering it is posted on this forum too, I am not too sure if your career will charge you for it though.
Thanks all. Been enjoying my device. Still want to tether, navigation, SSID hidden and some way of managing data usage but really enjoying my wp7 experience.
Does anyone know if this phone supports AT&T hsdpa+ in USA. I have seen G, E, 3G, H but what speed is the H?
thanks again. Mango or bust!

[Q] Can I lift AT&T limitations from my Legend?

Hi all
I have an Legend AT&T that I bought on Amazon last fall.
The fact that it is AT&T branded means it demands that I have an AT&T data plan in order to use WiFi tethering. This is annoying to say the least since up here in Iceland we have no AT&T. I have contacted HTC and they confirm the phone is open and onlocked. AT&T customer support tried its level best to assist me in "unlocking" the phone with out success.
Can anyone tell me how I can get out of this predicament. I also have an ASUS Transformer that I was hoping to connect to the internet with the ATH Legend.
This restriction also means that I can not get updates for the phone since it wants to connect to AT&T for all that.
Please help.
Olafur.
WTF are you trolling or something? You're probably also one of the unluckiest people on Earth as AT&T (US) never ever released the HTC Legend. It was rumoured: http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/04/htc-legend-coming-to-atandt-according-to-fcc/ , but never.
I'm sorry, but can you try telling us what you did to try and resolve this issue? Most importantly, what interactions did you do with any Icelandic carrier to reproduce the problem? Posting any error massages (EDIT: messages*), or more stories about what you tried to do would definitely help.
Nevertheless, I'm going to try and dissect a problem from your post. You want to activate HTC's Wi-Fi Hotspot. You can't get any updates for the phone. Put those two issues together and you end up with Android 2.1 Eclair. I want you to confirm for me that you have that (Home > MENU > Settings > About Phone). Because if you do, and if I remember correctly, back when we had the Legend on 2.1, and were harassing violently HTC for a Froyo update, we never had Wi-Fi Hotspot functionality unless we rooted.
That's all I can gather from the information provided.
Do me a favour, check at your phone's box and tell me what model your Legend is. Is it A6366, A6363, or A6365? If it's A6366, you have an HTC Aria, not a Legend, and it's a phone NEAR-IDENTICAL to the Legend that was sold down south in the United States on AT&T.
I also have another ridiculous AT&T theory. See, Americans down there sometimes refer to AT&T as Ma Bell or whatever. Bell, (Ignoring the "Ma") could stand for Bell Canada, the carrier IN THE COUNTRY BORDERING THE UNITED STATES that actually carried the HTC Legend. Yeah, it's ridiculous, but who knows? Your Amazon dealer, I'm sceptical of his service now.
Lastly, I'd just love for you to know that whether that phone came originally from Bell in Canada, or AT&T in the States, it won't work on Iceland's 3G bands. Even if you manage to resolve this issue, you won't be able to run on 3G networks. Only the newer HTC devices (starting with Sensation, I believe) are able to run all 3G frequencies around the world (except the Canadian + American AWS bands, only the HTC Amaze can do that). So if you ever manage to get Wi-Fi Hotspot running, you may only use it on 2G EDGE or GPRS, which is painfully slow to browse the internet. You could probably ad-hoc with your Transformer or something, but that's beyond my help.
Good luck!
Love, Bryan from Canada

HTC Inspire
Hi. For some reason my reply seems to have gotten lost. I will repeat.
In the interest of simplicity I called the phone mine, it is my wife's so I do not have it with me. You are absolutely right, this is not HTC Legend, it is HTC Inspire. The OS is version 2.2.2 (I am more or less sure) and because of no AT&T account none of the software that came with it can be updated. The phone does have the WiFi hotspot option but when I select it the phone complains that I must have AT&T data plan and leaves it at that. It does switch the WiFi off even if it can't activate the Hotspot. So, the option is there but she can't use it to connect her Transformer to the net. This is a really strange shortcoming. Why would AT&T care about what plan she has? Without the Data Plan she would just have to pay dearly. That would just be her desicion.
We have done nothing to get the phone to work. It connects to Icelandic carriers without a problem (yes, 3G as well) and without errors of any kind. I did assume the phone was locked when I turned it on for the first time and purchased an unlock code. That code I never used since there was not unlocking required.
I am not sure what you mean by "trolling".
Thanks,
Ólafur

It will root, unlock, install clockwork mod recovery, and superuser.
After that flash a rom. I will say I use the Rom called "Android Revolution HD 6.3.1" and can hotspot when ever I want, even without the AT&T account.
Video for that is here: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...4dTCCA&usg=AFQjCNE6rGAT6Z8pN9omO8UshYbzAup5cQ

Just a FYI for the hotspot to to work you will need a new Rom. But as I stated in my post above, I use Android Revolution HD. It's a very good Rom. Please if I helped, hit the thanks button.

[Q] Is my two day old Nexus 4 obsolete already?

So, received my Nexus 4 two days ago. My AT&T sim card is arriving today. I have not turned the phone on (just letting it charge) or paid my bill yet. Will the phone work on AT&T's 4G LTE network, or do I misunderstand its hardware capability?
Rumors along the following lines started floating around yesterday:
"On February 25th Straight Talk will be unavailing a revamped website experience, along with several new mid and high end phones and a new procedure for acquiring and activating AT&T sim cards. The new Straight talk sim cards will work on AT&T 4G LTE networks. You will also be able to view call history and other information if you have a Straight Talk account. For the first time Straight Talk will also allow certain smart phones to be used on their $30 plan and will be expanding the plan to offer more voice minutes (1500) text (2000) and data (300 MB). Enjoy and remember, you heard it here first."
If true, it makes sense that the Straight Talk AT&T sim supply is being depleted.
First, AT&T sims are no longer available on the Straight Talk web site.
Secondly, I saw this post regarding the sims:
"Walmart.com, the only place that's selling the ST SIMS, are running out. Orders are being limited to 2 and they're out of the Micro SIMS now. So you might want to get yours while you can. I've read the forum for the last few months after getting my Nexus 4, my first smartphone believe it or not. Just thought I'd finally post something."
Finally, I also emailed Straight Talk regarding the sim issue:
Please be informed that we are still able to activate the AT&T Bring
Your Own Phone (BYOP) SIM cards. However, the BYOP AT&T SIM cards are
not available for online purchase in our website at this time. They are
available for purchase on the Wal-Mart website (www.walmart.com) and
from participating Wal-Mart retailer stores nationwide. Our records also
indicate that AT&T service is provided in the zip code <removed>. Please be
advised that we have not received any feedback about AT&T canceling
their contract with our service.

That's even worse.......that would mean that my operating system is obsolete and I can't ever upgrade if I want LTE. From what I am coming to understand is that not all the LTE circuitry is in the phone anyway (like amplifiers for instance) so it would not work properly anyway, and the phone was never certified for LTE so I guess that is why they removed the capability in software.
yes. every device is obsolete the moment it hits retail. there's always something better in development.
btw, there are a few things I should clear up:
1. the radio/baseband is NOT the operating system. it only provides reception to the device.
2. android is not an operating system. it is random optional memory, or a firmware, if you prefer to look at it like that.
3. just use the old radio and the newest version of android together. the only change wiith the new radio is they killed band 4 so you can't connect to lte. I'm coming from a nexus s 4g, and I never updated my radio for the whole life of the device until about 3 months ago. the only thing it affects at all is your voice/data signal. Your phone wouldn't ever know the difference, unless they start making radio updates mandatory.....then you can start crying about losing lte. and I'll be right next to you with a tissue in my hand, as well.

i don't get it, what the heck is straight talk? and how is your phone obsolete?
That's the basic gist of any product these days.
Now with the Nexus 4, that made it even a bit worse since it didn't come with the hardware needed to work. Then again having LTE is such a big deal to you then guess you bought the phone without doing any research.

Actually I knew that LTE was not listed in the specs for the device before I bought the device. It was the very recent software update that concerned me, and yes again, they have every right to totally disable LTE in the future if they so choose. It was a lot cheaper than the Galaxy S III, so it is a gamble. Thanks for your constructive answer by the way.

crippled?!?!?! hahahaha!!! what you read were reviews immediately after the phone launched where it waspointed out that the lte chip is present, but no one was connecting. the only thing that could be construed as 'crippled' is the fact that it can only connect to band 4 lte. but if you use band 4, you would never know anything was different.
Just sign up with a carrier that uses band 4 lte and you'll be fine. None in the US currently do, but tmobile is going to launch theirs soon, and it will be band 4. I've also heard rumors of users getting lte working on at&t, but since my hatred for at&t runs deep, I wouldn't even consider using them, so I never paid attention to how it's done.

Great. This is my first smartphone, and I am trying to read up on the technology on several forums as fast as possible, so excuse my lack of knowledge. I have been supporting Linux for 10 years, so quite honestly my first priority is to root the device and install Busybox so I have a portable device with command line access via wifi with the most Linux commands available to all of my Linux servers at home, especially my Raspberry Pi for a project that I am building. Also hoping for Ubuntu on Android for this phone (Actually would prefer Red Hat/Centos/Fedora for Android). Second priority is phone calls. Third priority is data (HPSA+, 3G, 4G, etc.). I figure what I would have to pay for a camera, GPS, etc., as standalone devices, of which I own none, this is a fantastic deal.

If you interpret and connect the two definitions like that, then iOS, Windows Phone 8, etc., none of them are OSes. If someone load an OS onto a ROM, it automatically becomes NOT an OS? Firmware contains program code, and part of the code can be the OS. Firmware and OS are not mutually exclusive. An OS is defined by its functionality, not where or how it is stored.

I installed and ran android on my laptop. So how does that fit with your clever definition!!
An OS is not defined by the media it is on, you can run Linux off a USB stick, its still an OS.
Your interpretation of that definition is wrong, you have decided to just force it to fit in with your incorrect understanding
Also correct me if I am mistaken but the radio is also what starts the boot process? I read somewhere that it is the first thing to load and bootstraps in the rest of the OS? So it does a bit more than just provide reception.

Non us HTC 10 to sprint network

Hi, I made a mistake and bought a new non US unlocked HTC 10. I tired to hook it up to sprint with no success. My ultimate goal would be to make it work normally on Sprint network.
I have done a lot of searching, and it seems like I can unlock the phone, flash sprint ruu, and flash radios to make it work on sprint?
Can I clone my original sprint HTC 10?
Or am I S.OL.?
I would appreciate any help and guidance with my mission, or if it's even possible to get this phone working.
Thanks!!
Did you ever go through with this? I am interested in upgrading to an HTC 10 as it has the form factor (what is with the trend toward giant phones?) and features that are otherwise unavailable in any of the current crop of unlocked Sprint compatible phones. It seems like the only new HTC 10 models still available are the unlocked version. I understand that this method works for Verizon, but I haven't yet seen confirmation on Sprint.
