ICS contacts: "local profile" - Nexus S General

Has anyone else noticed this small but annoying ICS change?
I have always had a Google Contact called "me" with all of my info and my photo. So in my SMS conversations, etc... it always showed my picture for me. Now in ICS that doesn't work... all SMS contributions by myself are apparently done by this thing called "My Local Profile" which seems tied to the phone, because even if I do go through the hassle of filling it out, when I go to google.com/contacts, it does NOT show the "contact" I just created. So this seems like a step backwards if we really have to fill that info out locally every time we wipe the phone.
Am I missing something?

I've got the same problem. I'm sure that when i first updated, the bit at the top actually listed my 'Me' account there and recognised me. Now it just shows the 'Set up local profile' and my SMS messages etc don't know who I am.

On my phone I see "Me" in the People app. I think this was automatically pulled from my Google profile. Things are appearing fine for me.

Do you also have a 'Me' contact listed aswell? If so, if you edit one does it update the other?
I've just done a factory reset and it asks for your name on startup. It then just puts that in the 'My local profile' bit. Doesn't seem to sync the two as far as i can tell.

I do not have a "Me" contact listed and I never have.

I just renamed my 'Me' contact in gmail contacts to the same name stored under the local profile (My real first name and last name as apose to the word 'Me'), waited a bit and it has now sync'd the two together and appears to be normal again.
Although I also logged into google+ and now the contact has my google+ details against it too. Previously i had logged out of google+ and that's when it no longer showed my details. I'm wondering if its linked to google+ in some way.

I think you're right about it being linked to Google Plus. Here is what I did:
1) renamed my "me" contact to "Fname Lname" (to match my local profile)
2) waited 10 minutes... local profile still had name only, no other info
3) logged into G+ on the phone for the first time ever
4) local profile now has all my info from G+ (more info than my "me" contact had, plus a higher res picture)
5) renamed my "me" contact back to "me"
I'm guessing steps 3 and 4 were all I needed to do (renaming my "me" contact was pointless). It just auto-populates the phone's local profile from G+. Which is kind of inefficient... it should be more integrated with contact list so one sync covers everything including yourself.

Confirming that logging in to G+ from the phone populates the local profile info.

Gogle Latitude Icon photo won't set on map

So I got the update and I set myself up on latitude, I changed my picture for my icon to a photo on my phone and saved it. Everything looked ok, but when I went back to the map, just the blank face default icon was there. So I go back to the setup screen and that picture is blank again. However the icon does show up online on my igoogle page. I then tried a picture by taking a live picture and the same results.
So I let it sit there for about 2 days now and even turned off and on the phone a few times and it is still there. I have read on other forums of others having the same problems but so far no solutions.

Yeah I am slightly confused by this also because the photo does show up on google latitudes on googles website but not on Google Maps for the G1. Probally some bug that needs to be fixed for the next firmware update. Report it to google and see what happens.
I haven't added any friends to my g1 lattitude program so I don't know if it just a problem with just the your icon or everyone you add to the map.
BTW: How to I report the bug to google, nothing on their latitude page directs me to a support page.
Storm180
I have two G1s (my wifes and mine), and this made it work:
Go to you gmail account---> go to contacts--> pick the contact that you want to "see"(as icon).
make sure that the contact has, in the info area:
(pick from tab) IM: [in the box] GTALK: [email protected]
----------------------------------------------------------------
I noticed that IF:
(pick from tab) IM: [in the box] GTALK: XXXXXXXXX
without @GMAIL.COM typed ( just have GTALK: and name):
the icon is not shown on latitude.
MAke sure primary email account is the same as the one you fill inthe IM: box [GTALK: [email protected]]
OK GOT IT!!! TO SEE YOUR OWN ICON
ADD yourself inyour google contacts.
All you need is:
1)YOUR NAME Or A NAME (my name in the contact area is not the same name I set up gmail with)
2)primary email:
3) in the info part:
(from tab) IM: [in the box] GTALK: your gmail address ([email protected])
AND like I said don't forget the @gmail.com
VERY IMPORTANT:
your primary email: HAS TO BE: your gmail account
AND:
your own pic does NOT have to be uploaded in the contact section (but you have to have "my pick" circle picked)
PUT your pic in your account profile section.
*****EDIT: MAYBE BETTER TO PUT PIC IN CONTACT SECTION.***********
AND OH YEA:
don't forget to SYNC your phone
Worked like a charm. Thanks to everyone!
So was this the only solution for this problem? Any other fixes for those of us with a rooted update? I can't set my contact photo in google latitude and I'm running the latest JF release.

Facebook sync not working - cal syncs, but not contacts

Since a couple of days I have been unable to sync the contacts with the internal facebook app.
It always says that it is currently experiencing problems and is highly annoying!
Calendar sync works though.
Anyone got the same problem? A solution?
I am running the jp3 firmware, but also reflashing to jm5 produced the same problem.

Same problem here. Been like that for a week or so now.
I switched to Phonebook 2.0 from market. Think its better than the stock app and FB sync works.
But hope they fix that FB sync thing soon. It´s getting pretty annoying.
Maybe you should use Phonebook 2.0 to find a defect friend's name. When you link your Gmail contacts to Facebook contacts in Phonebook 2.0, you may find someone who have some strange things. For me, I have some friends who have their last-name 'null' instead of the real one. So, I decide to delete these friends and then I can sync agian.
Found this at androidforums earlier in the week when I was having this problem, and it worked for me. I can't post links, apparently, but to give credit, it's from airmanjerm over there (androidforums dot com slash samsung-captivate slash 127442-link-facebook-friend-photo-contact dot html).
1. Start the CONTACTS app.
2. Click on "Contacts" at the very top.
3. Pick a person in your contacts list who is also in your Facebook friends. Select their name and it opens their entry in your phone's contacts list. For this, we'll select "John Smith." (How original!)
4. Touch the MENU button in the very bottom left of the phone.
5. Select "Link Contact"
6. At the top, select "Get Friends"
7. Select your Facebook account. (If you don't see it, you'll have to be sure your phone is logged into your Facebook account.)
8. Your phone will pull up all your friends from your FB friends list. Although you're technically only trying to link John Smith, go ahead and select all the friends you want to import to your phone altogether. (Or just select all at the top.) This will save you a couple steps later.
9. Click "Save" at the bottom.
10. After a few seconds or a minute's worth of "importing," the phone will go back a screen. Here you will see all your imported Facebook friends that you just imported. Scroll down to "John Smith" and select that Facebook profile to link it to your phonebook entry.
11. An AMAZING feature here is that when the phone imports all your friends from Facebook, it automatically links your phone contacts with their Facebook profile IF they have either the same exact name, or the same phone number or other similar contact info.
12. For those that don't automatically link, repeat steps 1-10, omitting steps 6-9 since you've already imported them from Facebook.

Just tried it.
Can't even do that. When the sync error appears FB is grayed out in get friends.
You can also try syncmypix from the market... With this its possible to link contacts pictures from facebook to your phonebook contacts.
We'll have to wait until facebook fixes this failure.

i have the same issue. can't click on get friends since facebook is greyed out in contacts.
It started working for me.
found this while searching around, well I messed up and linked some stuff wrong, and just removed the facebook account...
Well story is I just got this phone,
added facebook account for the widget that came on phone, no contact sync
later installed facebook from market
then today tried to sync contacts with failure
After I deleted the facebook account, I went to add back and noticed two options for adding facebook accounts, one that says "Intergrated contact accounts" and one under "more accounts" I tried the one under intergrated and it seems to be working without having to do any work arounds...
If anyone is getting gray facebook when doing "get friends" make sure in Settings->Accounts & Sync->Facebook that contact sync is enabled.
maybe this will help
(welcome my first post in the array of Galaxy S forums, been using androind on my old ATT Tilt and finally upgraded)

Wow that did it for me... Thanks for the tip buddy.

[Q] Where do new contacts go?

I'm having a really bizarre problem with my G2. I can enter and save a new contact in my phone, however, when I try to look for that contact to call/text they do not appear in the list of contacts. It's almost as if I never entered the info at all except if the contact calls/texts me their name will appear then.
Has anyone experienced this same problem and if so how did you correct it? I'll mention I did port all my numbers over to this phone in the T-Mobile store using the hardware device for data transfer (and it seems not all of them made it over).
I had that same issue on my G1. If I added them from the phone - it wouldn't show in my text drop down. They all seem to work now that I switched. Go to Gmail and play with the groups that the contacts are in - see if that helps. Maybe you need to have your phone display all the groups instead of a select few.
I had this problem too. Go into Contacts>Menu>Display Options>Your Google Account and make sure the system group "My Contacts" is checked.

I looked and "My Contacts" is selected as well as "Imported Contacts" was already selected. Hmm...well I checked all the other boxes in my Google Account and it has seemed to correct the problem.

For People Having Problem With Facebook Contacts Pictures Sync etc [SOLUTION]

This worked for me; let’s hope it works for you...
Problem:
After a lot of messing around, my contacts appear to be synched with Facebook and are showing Facebook profile pictures and so forth. However, when I receive a text message from one of these contacts, their picture does not show next to the text message.
NOTE: This solution may fix other problems you are having with Facebook sync, what you have just read was my particular problem, so give it a go, might just work for your problem too.
Solution...
1. Go to Settings -> Accounts and Sync
2. Look under 'Manage Accounts' for any Facebook related accounts. If you see any, click on them, then click on 'Remove Account'. (Do this for all of them if there is more than one.)
3. Go back to the main 'Accounts and Sync' section where you have just been and click on 'Add account'.
4. Under INTEGRATED CONTACT ACCOUNTS (NOT more accounts) click on Facebook.
5. Enter your Facebook username and password as normal and click done.
6. Go back to the main 'Accounts and Sync' menu again, look for the new Facebook account you have just added on there and click on it.
7. Press the menu key on your phone, then click on sync now and wait till any spinning arrow logos you see stop spinning.
8. Go into your contacts and see if any have now linked with Facebook correctly (this will now be working for some people but for the majority it will not be... YET.... if not, continue with step 9.)
9. Click and hold on any of your contacts in your address book.
10. Click on join contact
11. If you see your contact with their Facebook pic next to them, click on them and they will now be successfully joined!.... If you don’t see them, you have two choices...
A) Re-edit their name in your contacts to match exactly how they have their name on Facebook. So if your friend is called 'John Doe' on Facebook but you have him as J Doe or something in your contacts, change it to match Facebook!)
OR
B)After step 10, click on 'Get Friends' and scroll until you see the contact you are trying to join, tick the box next to them, click save, then click on their picture which should now be showing under 'Suggested friends'.
Long winded - Yes
Time consuming - Yes
A soultion - Yes.
Let me know how you get on everyone...
I also do this and this works but the next issue I face is if I use a WIPE rom, how can I restore a back up of my contacts that already has the joined information ?
^^ Good question, same problem I have.
Without being some kind of genius with the SGS, I cant see how this can be done easliy to be honest.
Thing is, if your backed up contacts have the EXACT names as your facebook contacts, then when you load them back into your phone after a wipe install and sync (step 7 in guide) it should join them all up automatically for you.
However, if it does not I'm pretty sure it's due to an issue with the Facebook App because before the latest update they always used to join up automatically but not with everyone now.
Hello,
I am experiencing the same problem, but with Samsung Galaxy Nexus with ICS 4.0.4.
I tried the steps described on this post, but It didn't work.
(My facebook contacts doesn't show at People App at all)
I also tried re-installing and re-adding my facebook account, but It didn't work.
BTW, where is "INTEGRATED CONTACT ACCOUNTS" settings?
Please, Does someone have any clue on how to fix it?
thanks in advance,
Roger

[Q] cleaning contact list (Nubbie question)

I think this should be a simple fix, but I don't fully understand what I am seeing.
- When I look at my contact list, I see a single google icon on most. When I open those, they show as a joined contact with phone and google icons.
- Others show two or three google icons. When I open those, they show as a joined contact and a google icon.
Goal: I want to clean up my contacts list so I have a single copy of each entry that is synced to my google account. My google contacts are de-dupped and merged, so this is not a reflection of dups there AFAIK.
History: Initially I had most of my contacts in the phone. I went to the sprint store figuring this would be a simple queston for one of the Elves. 20 min later, I had 2-3 copies of every contact in my google account. In response to "where is the vcf file you just saved?" The elf told me, "There where no files on your phone and that there is nothing stored on my SD card." Anyway, the mess on google was corrected quickly from my computer. However I missed the oportunity to fix this mess when I recently flashed CleanGB and restored too much...
I have 2 questions:
1) What is the meaning of the multiple icons?
2) How do I just wipe the contacts on the phone and resync to google w/o wiping the google contacts?
Samsung Epic 4G, CleanGB 1.0
I had the same problem a while ago. I think I used the "contacts" section in gmail. That's where your phone syncs with. I found something in there that could delete duplicates or something. Or merge them? Sorry I'm not around a computer right now but that's the key. Hope it helps

Login to your google account had the same problem a while back. Just go to google.com/voice and you can manage your contacts better
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
in contacts hit menu>settings> check display only contacts with phones?
Thanks to all who replied.
I ended up doing the following:
1) backed up google contacts (as csv from gmail.com)
2) broke syncing of phone contacts.
3) wiped all contacts
4) re-enabled syncing
Joy.
