Real S Pen tuning by me
Carefully draw the following picture using stationery knife on the button of the S Pen:
Now you can easily and quick find S Pen button without looking at it or trying to search button pushing it at every possible place! After 2 days with this tuning I began to use the button for at least 5 times more often.

What does this actually do? How did you come up with this idea?i doubt anyone would defile their note without some proper explanation

I was bored at work and decided to play with a stationery knife...
If you use a stylus often you must know how freaking hard to find button sometimes, especially in the dark. Roughness will help to find a button much faster.

wow this is good too !! so ur thumb will be able to feel the button !! if u guys do not wanna scatch can try pasting a thin sticker... it helps too

all it does im guessing is let you find the button easier.
Since its so smooth and small i and a lot of people have trouble finding the button without looking down at the pen.
If you carve a little pattern into the button youll be able to feel the differance really easily so youll know when your finger is on it.
i might pick up a 2nd Spen and give it a try

Wouldnt it better, just have thin glowing tape and tape it on the button?
That way, can see in when dark too.

good thinking
but i dont wanna my pan look like this
is there any different way?

the glow sticker wont work because it wont get enough light throughout the day to work in the dark since its dark inside the compartment.
other options could be cutting a piece of di-noc carbon film and putting on the button.

Omg.
Just hold it as a normal pen, then twist it a little til u here/feel the click..

You could put a little liquid paper into the grooves that you cut to highlight the button as well.
Might do that myself, as it is I barely use the pen at all... Anything will be an improvement.

I was thinking about putting a thin coat of glittery silver fingernail polish on the button.

I had exactly the same idea. But then I realized that the button is placed in the direction of the ending hook of the stylus and the need for cutting/brushing the button was irrelevant since then for me. Quick glimps on hook tells me where the button is and short roll between fingers is also matter of fraction of a second. But your solution is definetely quicker

Hehe, proper hardware mod Just let me get something sharp here...

I'm just going to adhere a little spare strip from my invisible shield scraps so that it's a bit sticky and easy to quickly find.

1001 Uses for a PDA Stylus, what have/do you used yours for?

Was busy picking my teeth with my stylus earlier, (Yes I know it's disgusting, so don't ask to borrow my exec!) Anyway it got me to thinking what other usefull uses has everyone else found for their stylus's or is it stylii?
So lets hear it people?

Pick my nose and ears.
Lift up forensics evidence like a police officer.
Clean grout.
Drum.
Show kids cheap magic tricks like swallowing it or pulling it out of my ear.
Balance it on my upper lip.
Twirl it like a mini-baton.
Wield it like a mini-sword.
Throw it up against suspended ceiling tiles.
Mistaken it for a pen when trying to write on paper.
While I'm tapping on my head with it, if I come up with more, I'll post it here.
Cleaning fingernails?
Pick teeth
Clean ears
Balance on top lip whilst making Mick Jagger face
Entwine in hair/beard
Use as a mini spear just like in zulu
If only Michael Caine had said "Dont you throw those bloody stylus's at me!"
Play games with it like 'lose the stylus in between the floorboards then take hours to find it' ?
reset my:
Exec
Router
Laptop
mp3 Player
Set the clock on my car
Save channels on my telly
Emergency splint for a broken finger, always worthwhile remembering!
My 7 year old son likes to chew it, like a pencil :-( now it always falls out of my magician. What I do with it? Well I don't chew it, but clean my fingernails & ears, scratch my head, reset my magician, balance it on fingers & others things etc.
You can so much with it, except from normal writing it's the best body extension I can think of (yes I'm very narrow minded) LOL

The Magician's stylus just doesn't quite "cut it". But they're both cute.
Anyone notice the strange bend in the Universal's? Makes me feel quite >self conscious<.

it does do that, doesn't it.. that strange bend, I can stare at it for seconds.. I'm not sure I get it fully..
it also makes me constantly wander if I'm holding it the 'right way'..

Hahahah!
So the size of your nose & the shape of your stylus unreveals a girl everything you don't want to tell.
Hmmm, my stylus is worn & chewed.
My wife prefers the one on her Wizard, it grows in size when she gets it out and shrinks back down to a managable size when she has finished with it.
I wonder if the bend on the Universal one is designed in, so it can be used as an aid to erectile disfunction? "shudder"

To bring this only slightly back on topic, I do worry about dropping it and scratching the "glans", in case it subsequently scratches the screen. Even with a screen protector, I notice I've still managed to scratch the scrollbar area.

i got this far and also removed the ribbon of flex cable.
after that, i cant get the screen out ot the front housing. is there something im missing? when i use a pry tool to try to remove it like the rest of the parts, it creaks like its going to break. ive broken it down to study it before the lights get here just to have a grasp on what im doing. any one have any pointers? some one told me it may be glued in and i would need a hair dryer or something similar to remove it. any help you guys could share would be greazt! thanks!

Ballsy man, a lot of phones have the screens glued. It's a stronger construction method and allows for the phone to be thinner.

That's the EXACT same video posted above. It does not however deal with the question at hand. The OP already has the phone to that point.

sorry, i was cooking pork chops. that video posted stops right before where im at...(i know because that is the video i used for reference to get as far as i did.)
they dont remove the screen or where the buttons are at.
its not that ballsy really. this phone only has about 12 screws and 3 cables. there arent even any security stickers or water indicators.

i never got any farther. ive got a box of surface mount leds in 10 colors and nothing to do with them...
Its a double sided sticker holding the lcd to the front housing. I've replaced mine and had to reuse it. It went ok but I stretched it and the glue weakened.
Also the soft keys are glued to the lcd so remember to unplug that ribbon.

New S-Pen with Grey Button?!

Noticed that new SGN units come with an S-Pen that contains a Grey Button instead of the respective color of the pen. Anyone else noticed this?
That would let us see the flipping thing instead of hunting for it every time!
I bought a spare stylus and it has a grey button, i confirm
Just got my note yesterday, it had a pen with grey button. I'm having problems with the button though, I find its not very responsive when trying to Swype the menu and back functions, I have to press much harder on the button and screen than I am comfortable with.
Is this same with the other pens?

Drop of Tippex or Nail varnish on the button - done!
Agree though that a different coloured button should have been on all Note stylii!

Does anyone know if you get some type of paint / nail polish / sticker that glows in the dark. i use my phone a lot when the lights are off when my child is sleeping and would prefer something that is easy to find in the dark.

If you added coat of nail polish, it should be fine.
Well your all talking about stuff you can see. Seems kinda pointless if you still gotta look to find it
What it needs is texture so you can find it without looking. I'm thinking their might be just enough tolerance in the pen slot to accommodate 2-3 little bumps.
To make a rivet effect before (on a steam punk esque phone I made) I've sliced the round ends off of hairbrush bristles and superglued them on. Think I'm gonna try that

Good to hear Samsung are listening to our rants. The pen was quite awkward to use. Slight sideline, but just out of interest, has anyone noticed any other micro changes with the new production notes apart from the pen change? Any screen improvement in particular banding, black clipping etc.?

Has anyone noticed improvements? and if you have, can you post some pictures for backing up your claims. thank you!

I can confirm that the "new" S-Pen has a grey button. I actually got the new one with the S-Pen holder accessory (I thought it only came with the outside holder... turns out it also comes with an S-Pen so... free S-Pen?)

free ? the lot costs $35 for just a plastic holder that would be
quite expensive. So for the holder+extra pen the price is right.

Creaky volume button

Hi!
Do you guys also have creaking noises from your volume button on the Nexus 4? My button creaks when sliding my finger up and down on it and also when pressing it. Is this normal?
Would suck really bad if I had to return it. Next delivery seems pretty far away
It doesn't creak if I press it, if I cause friction by sliding up and down it will creak, but that's the case for any such phone. I wouldn't think twice about it, and I definitely don't think this warrants a return.
My power button was doing this. So I put some (very little) machine oil on its side and pushed it pretty often, so the oil could creep inside. Problem fixed.
Mine also creaks. Poor build choice of lg. I personally wouldn't ask Google for RMA because of this. I think this isn't a rare issue either.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Ok, guess I have to live with it then. The only thing that bothers me with this is that in Sweden this phone costs around 680 dollars and I wish that the phone would have felt more premium costing so much money.
Mine does also. I guess it's quite a common issue. But, to be honest, I'm not that bothered by it.
I forgot to mention that I can only hear it in a complete silence. If there's even slightest sound, it's not hearable.

Please someone come and cure my tech OCD
Please also vote on poll. Want to see hos common this is.
Baaaaaah......I dont know what to do about this.....
Do you think all phones has a creaky volume button? Is it so that everyone has it but just some who reacts and notices it?
mine rattles if shaken, its not snug like the power button or my old s2, not anoyed as long as it doesn't break, or fall out.
Guess there is a little chance to get one without creaky buttons then.
Well its not the end of the world. Just a bit annoying

You sure its the button that rattles? My button is nice and tight.
My power and volume button squeaks.
Same here but meh i could live with it.. Once my bumper comes in I should be all good.
Mine has the creaky volume buttons, but then so does my brother's HTC One X and that's a well built device. With the bumper on you wont notice it, and with a leather flip case, the case squeeks a hell of a lot more than the phone lol
My volume buttons also creak. After I put the Bumper case on, the creak is gone. But I feel your pain.
My volume rocker creaks as well, more so when I drag my finger from to to bottom (but not as much in the other direction for some reason).
It seems that this happens to a select few buyers. My girlfriend's Nexus doesn't creak at all, apparently. If it wasn't for the fact that I told her about the creaking in my device it might have been possible to do the old switcheroo...
i used this and the creaking stopped

Feels awesome and feels like you are writing with a normal pen.. i like it, so here how2build your own.
What you need:
- one of these guys (or similiar) (just the cap.)
- the grip from another pen
1. you have to remove the cover / top of the cap, so you get a tube.
2. pull the grip over it
top:
bottom:
3. ofc pull the whole thing over your stylus =) (not too much, you want to be able to remove it later!)
4. have fun

I actually use a pencil with mine most of the time... if the tip isn't too sharp it works almost flawlessly, and it glides over the screen very nicely and doesn't hurt the screen at all. I even bought some FullHB pencils (they're solid graphite, no wood) to use, and they seem to work even better than a standard pencil.
I just dug up the old full graphite pencils from my art school days and I have to agree: they are amazing stylusses (styli?).
Then I decided to go one better: I got a mechanical pencil with some nice fat leads (I went for 3mm HB koh-i-noors). Now I can retract the vulnerable graphite for safer traveling and still have an amazing and precice hard-tip stylus.
I might just take apart the official stylus and replace the rubber with a bit of graphite, but I'm not entirely comfortable storing that inside the tablet.

I had tried just a regular cheap mechanical pencil, and they don't work at all... probably because the lead is too thin and/or the casing is plastic and doesn't carry the conductivity to your hand. Glad you liked the pencil idea, though! Oh, and yes, it is styli
This is cool.
