[Q] Most secure USB Tethering Application? - Huawei Ideos X5 U8800

Hi Folks,
Installed Oxygen ROM and the U8800 performs MUCH better now Much credit to those involved on this forum for providing the instructions for me to do so.
However, as noted, there is no native USB tethering support. Just wondering what you guys would recommend as the most secure USB tethering application? Might be the "tin foil hat" speaking, but I am concerned about what apps like PDANet might be doing with my connection - eg. I wouldn't trust it to do online banking.
I have come to the realisation I definitely need tethering as I have no other internet options next year, but not sure whats the safest application to use (I would even contemplate rolling back to stock Android if I could).
Thanks in advance.

Data Plan-less Vogue

I got an HTC Touch from Verizon because I wanted to get away from the clutches of Verizon's lousy software they cripple every phone with and it was the cheapest WinMo phone they sold (I got it for $40.) I got the phone and stuck with my current plan ($10 add-on line on family plan.) I am cheap, my family is cheap, so we have no data plan. We can't afford a data plan, so gettign one is not an option (sorry, maybe someday in the future.)
Is there anything good I can do with my HTC Touch that doesn't require data? Is it worth flashing to a custom firmware? Is it worth installing Android? Or should I just forget it all and stick with the stock configuration?

Without data, you can text, call, listen to music, take pics, and download movies to the SD card from your computer.
Is this guy slow or something. You can do anything that doesn't use data, so the obvious things it can do were mentioned by the previous user. C'mon man, what a waste of time.
Well, actualy, pretty much anything "Android" is needing data, so stick with WinMo.
And then, you still has a GPS with Camera, music and video capacity. Pretty neat on it's own!

Well, the GPS isn't much good if you can't download maps.
You can still use it with TomTom or Garmin.
Ok, Android is out of the Question due to it's heavy reliance of data.
Is there a better Camera or video recording app than the one included? It takes decent photos, but the gallery is pokey. Video recording is lousy quality no matter what setting I put it on (hoping to get QVGA resolution at 15-25fps.)
If I want to use GPS, is TomTom or Garmin better? Which flash file is best for allowing use of GPS without Verizon navigator or some add-on service.
Also, is there any flash that helps to minimize memory card corruption? I have an 8GB microSD card and it seems to corrupt anytime I write files through the phone. I can take it out and use an adapter to load music and movies, but installing apps is usually the death of the card.
Sorry if I sound like a rookie, I have messed with RAZR flashing and game console soft-modding, but not much Windows Mobile experience.

I am with you brother as VZW BLOWS!!! Unfortunately that is who my work plan & I don’t have a choice. I was going to buy a Touch Pro without a data plan but the pricks wouldn’t activate the phone without a data plan which I still fail to understand.
I believe that NFSFAN’s 6.5 ROM does have a slightly better camera & video camera option. It is the same software & only the registry settings are tweaked.
GPS is whole another issue & be prepared to do a lot of reading. Again you are going to want to use NFSFAN’s ROM for GPS. Just trust me on this one. GPS will work with the stock ROM but you will have to soft reset your phone every time you want to use it. These threads should help you out.

I have not had any memory card issues. I take mine out & put it back in all the time. I could be just that you have a bad card. Some of the Kingston cards do have this issue.
Also note that flashing a custom ROM will void whatever warranty you may have.
I'm not too worried about the warranty, if I was I wouldn't be here!
Anyhow, sounds like I will get the best mileage out of flashing the NFSFAN WinMo 6.5 ROM and then activating the GPS ala instructions found on this forum and a wiki page I found while searching around.
I still need to read up a bit about the flashing process. I flashed a few RAZRs to play around, but they weren't activated and the process for WinMo is quite different.
For very cheap you can also get a usb bluetooth for your computer, then setup activesync via bluetooth, which will provide you pass-through internet over bluetooth while in range and connected to activesync via bluetooth. That means while in your home (generally in the same room) as a the bluetoothed computer, you will be able to use any internet services on the phone as well.
Is there a guide to setup passthrough internet via bluetooth with ActiveSync?
I already have bluetooth built into my laptop (it's a Macbook Pro, running Windows 7 for for ActiveSync and gaming) so essentially it would be free, but I don't want to accidentally go on Verizon's data (I am on the pay-per-MB plan because I signed up online and couldn't choose no data.)

If you're willing to come off of VZW, another possibility is PagePlus. It is prepaid and uses the VZW network. You can stay on it for as little as $4/mo.
As far as data... You can do pay as you go for data, OR, the service gives you free QNC (free slow data), but you have to figure out how to get your device to use QNC (14kbs). People have successfully used PP QNC with Treos, Moto Q's and HTC 6700's.
I believe there is an app that allows you to toggle data usage on your phone so you can avoid getting charged by accidentally using data. I believe it is linked in Codybear's FAQ and you may need a custom ROM for it to work.

I am in the same situation! I purchased the phone 2 months ago and I just wanted a smartphone i.e. something to download programs on to that I don't have to pay for. I really like NFSFAN's winmo 6.5 ROM. The latest version is very good and I would consider flashing. Btw Stock config really sucks at least flash to something aesthetically pleasing!

You mean like Android? (No, android isn't flashable yet, but it can be booted from any GPS-enabled WM ROM.)
Android is good, I'm running it on my Vogue. I don't have a data plan either... and Android really makes you wish you had one.
A good program for WinMo for those without data plans is SmartTouch. It gathers all sorts of SMS services into one and does all the Google SMS stuff, Facebook, IM, Yellowpages, etc. I have unlimited texts and no data so when I was using WinMo I relied on that a lot.
You guys are gonna kill me, but I don't have texting either. I got to choose the phone and have no say over the plan. I have pay-per-text and pay-per-data. My plan is the standard $10 add-on line for FamilyShare 700min basic plan. We have 5 lines total, so we are pinching pennies hence no text or data.
On a side note, I seem to be having trouble finding a guide/sticky on how to flash NSFAN's 6.5 ROM and setup my phone after the upgrade to use it on Verizon (I know with RAZRs you had to do some crazy crap with reprogramming and Seem edits and such, which I never did get since I only flashed a de-activated phone.) I know it deals with something RUU or RRU or something. Any pointers are appreciated!

how can i do this!? my phone only need bluetooth correct? because the sprint vogue "doesn't have" wifi
You need to buy a USB "Bluetooth Dongle" for your PC. This will allow your PC and phone to connect via the PAN (Personal Area Network) capabilites of the Bluetooth stack.
Bluetooth dongles are incredibly cheap thru Amazon. It is a little quirky to set up but works great.
Buy the dongle and install the drivers.
Install ActiveSync.
Turn on the your phones Bluetooth and make it visible.
Go to ActiveSync on your phone and under "menu" select "connect via bluetooth"
Now you may need help figuring out how to make it all connect, but do the above first... then ask questions if you are unable to get it to setup correctly.
I have this setup working flawlessly on my Samsung i760...
I will admit I am having trouble getting the Vogue to connect "flawlessly", but that is likely due to the "quirkiness" of this kind of connection.

If only I had a blackberry....
Seriously though, why not take your $100 and buy an Android phone to Wifi tether with? My DInc works great for tethering with my Archos 101!
in case this doesn't work
http://www.android-hilfe.de/archos-...er-das-handy-mit-dem-tablet-ins-internet.html
it just says pair your phone with the archos, setup bluetooth tethering via DUN and enter the apn server in the archos + maybe login info (i left that emtpy since my provider doens't require it)
but if you can spare 100bucks. why dont you buy those little portable wifi hotspots.
just put in a sim card and connect it via wifi to your archos.
they are about as big as a egg.
You can email me from the site and I will help you do it. I have it working on my iPad to my Verizon Blackberry Bold. The model Blackberry and network is important to know.
Blackberry bold 9700 here! I don't mind being a test dummy for someone, just shoot me a pm.
It is a known issue that the Archos Gen 8 cannot currently tether to the Blackberry's. Tethering to Iphone and android phones seems to work in most cases but there is an issue with Blackberrys. I have a company issued Blackberry and it would be much simplier to pay the extra $15 a month for the data plan then get another phone or hot spot device and pay for and carry that around along with my Blackberry. I have a model 9000 but am due for an upgrade so I can change to a different model if need be. We utilize AT&T as the carrier. There is a developer over on ArchosFans forum who is also trying to get some other parties to chip in for him to develop this app.
Thanks
Dan
Already working on this
I have had this same offer on the archosfans forum and had been exploring getting it working on my BB 9700 before selling it. It doesn't matter what network it is on. There are things missing in the config for Archos because of the difference in the way carriers set up in Europe as opposed to the US. I was most of the way there. I'm looking for $300 to do it and have $100 already. It also gives me some people to test the code.
PM me if interested.
so to sum it all up blackberries can't tether to android at the moment correct?
Has anyone tried using PdaNet on their blackberry?
my dad would appreciate this. luckily my hd2 with froyo tethers just fine

Why do I bother? Yes. It doesn't freaking work! When I do get a few more things out of the way I will surely be asking myself if this is actually more than an idle curiosity for people. Before I dumped my 9700 I tried every possible option which includes several available programs. Anything on BlackBerry App world and anything I could google. No joy! Read my post again. I know it can be made to work with 100% certainty.
PDAnet is $50. Apparently an actual developer willing to make it work isn't worth a PM or a cent. I'm really starting to wonder if it is worth my time.
but you can use the demo of pdanet for blackberry right? You hit enable yada yada yada paired it and it still didn't work over pdanet's bluetooth DUN?
Ide try but I'm waiting for someone to find a solution for one of these tablets so then i'll buy one
"but you can use the demo of pdanet for blackberry right? You hit enable yada yada yada paired it and it still didn't work over pdanet's bluetooth DUN?"
Just so everyone knows. There is currently no way to tether the blackberry to the Archos, none, nada no matter what software you try to use. That is why we need a programmer to write the code. We have one willing to do this (Sequiter) if people will PM him and let him know they will pay for it.
CDMA tether working on verizon . I rooted my archos 32 then i used some of the info from this site http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=18053 I got my phone to connect and i was online .. It's a bit of a pain and it will only work in root . I am hoping now that this info works and connects someone can make a small program that will make it easy to do ... My bb connected 1st show .. My wifes e815 that i keep around for FREE internet connected but drops after 30 secs I think there needs to be a username @vzw3g.com and password when tether to the e815 . I am looking into how to add this in the chat part now
Hope this helps .. I will be up all night geting 100% working ..
If you like to root your device I used this setup .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880321
Also it makes it easy to copy of the tether stuff using ADB !
opps !! when in rooted dev side .. after you reboot it removes the files ... So I gess i will need to make something that will copy the 3 files each time i need to tether .. e815 to work also just added user [email protected] and password vzw
I will have more info soon on it ..
Thanks
Folks,
I have a BB Tour and I might have that $100 solution today. I am waiting on a device today that should allow me to turn my BB into a wifi hotspot. It is very small/portable. It is from Cradlepoint and called the PHS300 personal wifi hotspot.
I will report back today if I get it to work!
As for why not get a new phone? I plan on it, but want to wait for new Android 4gLTE phones to hit the market, which are a few months away.
Folks,
I have a US Verizon Wireless Blackberry Tour 9630 that tethered with my A70 via Bluetooth right out of the box, and continues to do so reliably. I understand that there are many issues with tethering BB's with the Gen8's, but I just wanted to inject some facts here. It's not *all* Blackberrys.
There have been many threads over on archosfans.com forums about this issue. Hopefully, if Archos is paying any attention at all, they'll recognize that this is one of the top complaints that they're getting and address it with the next firmware release. I feel like I got really lucky that mine works. If it hadn't, I'd have put the A70 right back in the box and sent it back where I got it from.
Cradlepoint also works great I have the 350 ... And you can run the Cradlepoint off 4 AA batts with a Easy DIY plug and battery case .. It says it gets 3 - 3 1/2 hours .. I ran mine on batts today for the 1st time watched some videos and lite web .. It will still working after an hour or more ..
I tested it with 3 phones
e815
vx6800
BB
all work great ..
But i can also tether BT over command line Term .. But it is a pain in the A## to redo copy the files and stuff eatch time .. I kind of like the Cradlepoint better as you can connect upto 6 ofther wifi devices at the same time ..
CompFreek,
Thanks for confirming it will work. Other than liking to tweek now and again, I am more about ease than anything else. I am stoked about getting it. I was bummed when I received my package from Amazon on Monday and they sent me the wrong item. I will have the real deal tomorrow.
Would still like to know how you manage to do it via blue tooth method. What thread has the deets or can you walk me through it?
Thanks bud!
Post #14 on this page will get you started VIA BT .. It works good just a real pain i need to make some kind of auto copy .. this way when you reboot it will recopy the 3 files need for BT to work on CDMA .. As root !! I am still trying to put something better to gether for that setup .. I have an programer working on a small program for DUN /CDMA now that I know it works . I wish I knew a way to export the software out of the nokia 810 to android it has the best setup for tether and a great wizard for the setup to any network I tested so meny wireless CO on the n810 and that all work great ..
You will still love the Cradlepoint it's nice to have .. I tether my laptop and android a32 at the same time it's great ..
Blutooth Tethering Android Client.
The problem with the craddlepoint is to have to carry an extra thing with you....I've used the Aluratek ...and it was great...but straight connection would be nice.
People have had succes with CDMA versions of BB but just not GSM Version.
Computerfreek, would GSM version work with your method?
Also, I'm asking people who have the know how ...to conisider creatin a bluetooth Tethering Android client. The equivalent of the Archos Builtin client....that would work on not just Archos but also gtab and other tablets lacking this BT Tethering feature...
I would try a lot of these tablets if I knew I can BT Tether them to my phone.
The client would also just make BB Tethering possible....
A smart guy from China wrote the ibluever app to tether iphone, ipad, ipod touch to any other phone. His first version did not have BB support. His second version does have BB support and people have been using it like crazy. Well Android lack such client. PdaNet is not the equivalent ...I wrote them to try to get them to write something similar but got only a standard response from the support person. What we need is Client to sit on Android device like, the archos BT Tethering routine. Ibluever has been selling...and I believe if someone write this for Android..not just Archos only, he will sell it well...very well...and at the same time help the Android fans.

[Q] Why can't I tether?

Why can’t I tether?
I have followed the instructions explicitly. I have replaced my device as my first one was lost. I have tried to tether to my 32 bit Vista HP laptop, as well as a 64bit Windows 7 PC.
I am able to put my sim card back into my Tilt 2 and tether.
My data plan is the now-extinct “Smartphone Personal Bundle” which includes unlimited Data and messaging.
I have been unsuccessful on both devices and on two different computers. I get windows-generated error messages and it appears that the device does not even dial.
Does anyone have any idea why I can’t tether? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave

Did Windows install the drivers? Are you getting an error on the PC or the phone?
I'm tethering fine with my Win & x64...
Hi,
The drivers have been installed by the Focus – twice – uninstalled, and reinstalled from the web with no difference noted. I have never seen any error messages on the Focus. The error messages appear on both PC’s.
I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. If you don’t mind, what data plan are you on please?
Thanks,
Dave

I'm on the old unlimited data plan, as well. Which set of instructions did you follow - I've seen 2 very different procedures out there?
Hi,
If we are on the same data plan, I suppose I can rule this out as the culprit.
I’ve seen two sets of instructions as well:
http://mobilitydigest.com/windows-phone-7-tethers-you-can-do-it-now-heres-how/
http://pocketnow.com/windows-phone/samsung-focus-does-tethering-after-all-on-windows-phone-7
However these seem to be identical, and these are the directions I have followed. If you know of any instructions different than these, I certainly would appreciate knowing about them.
Thanks for your reply,
Dave

Here is where I found special instuctions for "Setting up the Win7 x64 Driver/Modem".
These extra steps were less than clear to me and I couldn't get them to work. Ultimately, I ignored them and it worked fine.
"Setting up the DUN connection" instructions didn't work, either.
The procedure you're using should be fine. I had a hard time finding the correct drivers for Win7 x64, but, eventualy I did.
What version of Windows are you running and what error messages are you getting, exactly?
Hey Man,
Thank you for your response. The windows 7 64 bit machine I attempted to tether belonged to my local computer repair guy. We attempted this as a troubleshooting step after he became frustrated with attempts to get my 32 bit Vista laptop tethered. I no longer have access to this PC and the only machine that I need to tether (desperately as I need it for work) is my Vista laptop.
I did study the Windows 7 instructions you posted and I tried as many combinations as I could think of for user names, passwords and numbers to dial – no changes.
The error code I keep getting is “error 619”. We experienced the exact same results with the Windows 7 PC, but I believe the error code may have been “628”.
I do sincerely appreciate your help. If you or anyone has any other ideas or suggestions I’ll gladly take them as I really need to get this fixed.
………Anyone……Bueller………?
Thanks again!

It really sounds like you've got a driver issue. Have you tried the divers found on the link here?
Although it wasn't necessary on my Focus, I found that the LG Quantum requires that you turn off the Data Connection under the Cellular menu before attempting to connect as a modem.
Worth a try.

Didn't have to on my Focus, but, certainly worth a try.
Hey Guys,
I have loaded the driver directly from an out-of-the-box new Focus – twice. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver from the link you suggested at least two times, and I watched my computer guy do the same. I have compared the version number of the drivers – all were the same.
I have always turned off Wi-Fi on the device and the laptop prior to attempting to connect, but I never considered the data connection. I tried twice to connect with the cellular data turned off – no change.
Again, I very much appreciate these suggestions. Although there are reports that tether is not working for everyone, it does appear to be working for many here. I am therefore convinced that there is a solution, and that it will probably turn out to be something simple. It is unfortunate that this feature is at present unsupported.
Thanks again – sincerely,

It definitely works. It's a good thing it's not supported, because, it wouldn't be free! I'm sure you'll get it working with all the helpful folks here...
Have you tried the suggestion on this page (sorry, can't directly link as I'm a noob, just add the http)?

Look for the comment from DMalone regarding adding an extra initialization string in the modem properties in Device Manager.
EDIT: Oops, already mentioned in wspaw's other link. My apologies!
I’m tethered! I can’t believe it, but I’m frickin’ tethered! Details follow:
I was wrong about my data plan. I was on a now-extinct plan called “PDA personal max w/ unlimited M2M messaging” for $74.99/month. This plan is the same as the still-available “Smartphone Personal Bundle” for $50/month except that it included tethering.
This was the reason that I was still able to tether the tilt, and was obviously the instrument preventing me from tethering the Focus. I switched to the less expensive “Smartphone Personal Bundle” and was immediately able to tether the Focus.
In the short term, I have solved my immediate problem and reduced my monthly bill by $24.99. In the long term, I may have shot myself in the foot.
I assume that tethering will eventually become a supported feature on the Focus. There is actually no explainable reason that it was not supported at launch. The unlimited data plan which included tethering will not likely be available in the future. I perhaps should have bitten the bullet and carried both devices until tethering was supported on the Focus. For this I would have given up some instant convenience, but I would be gambling that the plan I was on would be compatible with the Focus in the future. My gut is that they will eventually get more money from us.
I hope this information helps others. Again Guys, sincere thanks for the information and helpful suggestions.

At least you're tethered. For whatever reason, I have always been able to tether my TP2 and Focus with the unlimited data plan, although it does violate my TOS. Haven't had an issue yet with AT&T, as I don't think they can tell, outside possible changes in usage patterns.

3g from phone teher to a500 tablet?

maybe i am not using the search tool properly nor posting this in app section.
But anyone know any way to do so?
my xperia x10 is half dead already i would like to 3g tether to tablet for 3g uses.
I search the market for app, none of them seem to support it. Is there another method? I am not too great with this sort of things
would like a detail guide or explanation.
thank you.
p.s: also i would like to ask, is it possible to use rocket mobile 3g fingers from rogers (i live in canada) to obtain 3g? sorry i am not technical so no idea how these things goes.
I don't know anything about rocket mobile, but I just downloaded Quick Wifi Hotspot from the market yesterday and it worked fine while at the restaurant. I left the network open and named it my name and connected via the tablet with no issues. It's also free and that is helpful Hopefully it's compatible with whichever rom/android version you are using. I have an HD2 with an Android 2.3 ROM based on C7 (I think that's all the requisite info).
I have cheap zip cricket cell phone. I do love crickets service here in my area.thou some say its lame elsewhere.
Anyway I rooted my cell installed wireless tether.and when I turn it on my tablet or my notebook will connect automatically and its great for most things even tried Netflix yesterday. Pared with crickets unlimited plan for 50.00 a month.
Set wireless tether to Mac address security lots of people will try to connect.to use your internet.some just do it automatic ..
thank you, the reason i posted this is because my x10 still run on grandpa software (at least not 1.6) android 2.1.
Acer have an instruction on how to enable portable wi-fi option on phone and ad-hoc but 2.1 doesn't have that option yet.
since my phone is already half dead (thank to SE's crappy product), i don't know if i can root it and install custom rom before it brick or dead completely.
i will check out that method thanks.

[Q] Is it possible to use the S5 as a SIP phone over wire (non-wifi,non-mobile)?

I'm strongly opposed to wi-fi and mobile radiation.
However I bought this S5 for taking photos primarily (16MP cam and all) and to test my websites on real smartphones.
So my ISDN phone is about the break and I thought "hey I bought this expensive piece of crap which can't do reverse tethering without rooting it, why not use it as a SIP phone instead of this phone that is about to break and save some money?"
Well I have found that with some Galaxy Pro tabs you're able to buy a USB<->RJ45 adapter, plug it in and use it as a SIP phone client, video calls and all.
Apparently you can't do this with the S5. At least not officially.
Right now my options are: sell it or trip knox and install a custom system. I'm trying to sell it right now but in case it won't get sold I'm stuck with it. (I have found no app that does reverse tethering properly, I have to set it up manually every time and even then some apps won't recognize a connection since neither 3G or wifi is enabled)
So my question is, do any of the current images floating around support a USB<->RJ45 adapter and does reverse tethering work out of the box on one of these images and do they also have a configurable SIP client?
