jealous of sprint version sgs2 - Galaxy S II General

man im from the US, ive always loved how buying phones from overseas gave me the edge on everyone else 6 months before anyone else here. but this year dang.. sprint really stepped it up. bigger screen without going bigger phone, they gave it a better battery, 4G, and the biggest thing, is they gave it an LED notification light.. sighhh
honestly i dont know why samsung wants to make their flagship as skinny and light as possible.. actually i do know why.. to beat the iphone.. yeah alright, youve proved you can make a phone so skinny and smooth that it literally sides out of your pocket when you sit down.. i would much rather have a wider phone, and it have a 3000mah battery in it.. a thicker phone would be more comfortable to hold anyway.
the only down side to having the sprint version is that big "sprint" logo on the front.. oh wait, they didnt put one on there.. -__- ugh
check out this side by side pic. the AT&T version is the same build as ours, so use it as a reference.
anywho.. thoughts?
order: AT&T: 4.27in screen T-Mobile: whocares Sprint: 4.52in screen

To be honest, who gives a ****?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App

um, and now they have the note overseas, which ****s all over the epic touch 4g. Oh and btw, all that stuff you mentioned, like 4g (which the AT&T version has as well) bigger screen, and LED notification, DIDNT come with a bigger cpu. So all that means is the epic touch has more things beating down the cpu than we have on the i777/i9100. Im not jealous, if i wanted a notification LED i woulda gotten a HTC, and if i wanted a bigger screen i woulda got a note, which has all of the **** you mentioned plus more, but a bigger cpu to make up for the difference.

I think this is a rant over the international SGS2? keeping in mind that all the the carrier versions of this phone should be an improvement from the original international SGS2 since they were released later? Sprint is CDMA anways, so fail.

"Bigger screen but not a bigger phone"
Who told you that??? Do your homework. Fail! Worse CPU! Fail! Cdma! Fail! Updates? Fail!... Really nothing to be jealous about.
Sent from my GT-I9100

Regarding battery, there are a few options for am extended battery so that's a non issue, you're welcome to trade size for battery life (and without a huge screen eating it). The 2000mah just makes the back flat, awesome. The screen is already a great size for me. Led=bln. And let me know how many months behind the sprint version is for getting updates. I had the old epic, it was like an extra 7 months for gingerbread. Lots of testing to make sure carrier iq and their charge $30 tethering option works
I'm very glad i got the i9100. Won't ever go back.

You wont be so jelly next christmas when those phones are still waiting for their first ICS update.

Never knew Samsung used a physical search button like LG?!

WiMax 4G is typically slower than HSPA+ 4G and it drains battery a lot faster too. And when the Epic 4G Touch drops down to EVDO, which happens often, network speeds are dog slow.

It's always been like that for the US carrier-branded versions of Samsung's phones; I'm not sure if the US carriers feel that Americans need a familiar four-button layout, or if US patents are stricter regarding the button and they're avoiding yet another lawsuit from Apple.
But yeah. If you want a big screen, get a Nexus or a Note.

That picture is a lie, the sprint version is the biggest sgs2 out there.
At&t = 126 x 66 x 8.9 mm
Tmobile = 130 x 69 x 9 mm
Sprint = 130 x 70 x 10 mm

In North America, carrier versions are almost ALWAYS worse than the international version.
Only exception seems to be the I777 - it's about a draw. Failure-prone mechanical home button replaced with capacitive buttons (good), NFC (good), audio setup is just different enough that you can't use I9100 audio libraries (very bad when combined with AT&T's ****ty update policy).
The Sprint version sucks - its radio service is unreliable as hell. The RIL will frequently just die, requiring a reboot.

Hardware, like most Samsung products, is usually pretty immaculate - can't complain about that. TouchWhiz UI is likely garbage as with most Samsung products software.
So with Root and a competent developer who could get AOSP working - Rockin.

My problems with the moment were hardware related. I'm going to keep an eye on this phone though. I want a kicking 3G phone though since I don't live in a 4G area and hate the idea of paying extra for a feature I won't use.

Also they seem to hate the default way of setting up Android OS. Their file system is pretty bizarre.
every sammy i have owned has sucked.. lol but for every sammy i hated prolly 3 more liked.. so mostly personal pref..
Im happy to see this come to sprint..for one reason..they need it. more android..look at verizon.. lol
This is like phone porn. I'm all horny for touchwiz 3. http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/29/samsung-epic-4g-preview/
Think this will be my next phone, i'm tired of waiting for HTC to put out a killer android phone that has a slide out keyboard. I have had bad experiences with samsung phones in the past (they were before smart phones even existed) but i'm willing to give them one more shot with this phone.
I've never had a Sammy phone. I had a couple Sony Ericsson's and then the HTC Wizard came out, been with HTC ever since. The hard qwerty is what drew me to HTC, I had no idea places like xda existed. It's been over a year since HTC has made a keyboard phone and the HTC Vision has one but I think it's only going to Tmous and I can't do that because they dont have a single 3G tower in Arkansas... I'm presently on AT$T because when I first got a cellular in 2003 Cingular was the best carrier in the state and I'm a creature of habit so I've stuck with them. But, they suck about picking up phones I like, the iPhone has hamstrung their network, and they're handing out free femtocells but when I called about that they basically told me to fu*k off. My two complaints about my TP2 are slowness and no headphone jack. Epic 4G/Galaxy S Pro ameliorates both of those to a t...
So, how do you people like Sprint? They'd save me money and I like the new phone every year... Also, what's the build quality like on sammies? Last question is are they as easy to take apart/repair as HTC phones are?
I have to say that every samsung phone I, or anyone I know has owned, holds up like a tank. They drop them, throw them and step on them and they are fine. I wouldn't be that rough, but its nice to see.
Really? I was a little worried about build quality since they seem to use a lot of plastic and little if any metal. I'd love for Epic's slider to be as firm as the Droid's but wasn't expecting much.
Well, their initial quality is what it is. But they stay in that condition with very good resilliance in my, and my friend's, experience.
I have a sammy dumbphone, the a727, and it has amazing build quality. Soft touch plastic, super thin and light, great battery life.
Samsung can make a good phone if they put their minds to it. The epic seems like the best galaxy phone, mostly because of that soft touch back. Getting the soft touch battery cover for my Pre made it feel five times better, much more solid and durable than the crappy glossy bendy plastic that is default on the pre(and the other galaxy variants).

Review from engadget
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/20/t-mobile-g2x-review/
While most of the hardware in the G2x hits the spot, we're a little underwhelmed with the display. The 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480) IPS panel looks good on paper but misses the mark when compared to the competition. Sure, the colors are rich and the viewing angles are wide, but the LCD washes out more than expected in direct sunlight and suffers from a significant amount of backlight leaking out from the edges of the screen, resulting in visible "stains" on solid, dark-colored content.

It's getting rave reviews, the only complaints I have read are the light leak and the Euro version comes with a hdmi cord and the us version doesn't. Other than those two complaints this phone seems to be a winner.
Oh damn, I'm still up in the air between this one and the SGSII. Looks like Sammy's gonna win in the display dept. This is pretty disappointing to see; especially since we know LG makes the screens for the iphones. SMH.
Don't see much of an upgrade from my vibrant. Now if it had a 4. 3" screen, I would run and get one today I hope we get phone with a screen that big soon.

People should really wait this out. The Vibrant is more than good enough for now, why rush and get the newest flawed product.
I've had 3 phones in the past 2 months, lost a mt4g over the weekend, got a gs4g on Sat, returned it today got the g2x and other than missing the optical mouse on the mt4g, for what's out there currently this phone is by far my favorite....but really how come phones are now lacking camera hw buttons and notification LEDs, that has been irking me all week, and I would take a vibrant over a gs4g because of the internal storage
im trying to wait for the galaxy 2 but i doubt i will be able to wait and find my self getting the g2x
Played around with it today at the downtown Seattle TMO store, and the screen was a major letdown for me. I went wanting to upgrade. The kicker was when I asked if I got the upgrade they said I had 3 months before my 1 year for discount to upgrade. Grrr. Wonder if the HTC Sensation will be out by then, bigger screen, faster processor, etc.

You're right but everytime I compare this with my Olde Cliq, I piss off .Except for the not too good speed, everything works nicely and its GPS just simply blow Vibrant one out of the water (locks within 5 seconds no matter what roms I put on it Eclair, Froyo or Gingerbread)
So the LG G2X runs the Tegra Duel Core, the HTC Sensation will be running their Scorpion duel core chip, and the Galaxy S2 will be running what processor?
I remember seeing something about the HTC duel core not being as good as the Tegra 2's? how about the Galaxy S2 duel core?
I know its a lot to ask, just wondering if anyone remembers seeing that HTC chip was not as good as the Tegra or what the Samsung will have.
I think it will be good to compare this as it seems like these are the 3 phones many of us are trying to decide on/wait for
Got my g2x on Tuesday, and rooted it last night, the screen is a let down my is minor compared to some overall love it, someone just finished recovery and cm7 or gingerbread STABLE real soon.. the only Sammy products I will buy here forward our their TVs

Photos of AT&T Galaxy S II with a slide out keyboard including benchmarks??

BGR has a new post that has photos of what they believe to be the AT&T version of Galaxy S II with a slide out keyboard. It also includes a couple of benchmarks; Linkpack and Quadrant. I can't believe that AT&T would do this... looks like I'm not getting the AT&T version...
http://www.bgr.com/2011/07/26/exclusive-images-of-atts-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-revealed/
oh my GOD thats ugly!! good thing i live in the UK, no carriers changing my device
Looks really ugly, it will just add to phone's thickness.. and even the camera looks weird in those photos!
Electricpig notes that the Linpack benchmark is about 18.6% higher than an unlocked Galaxy S II (58.544 MFLOPS vs 47.606 MFLOPS)... leading them to suspect that they bumped the CPU from 1.2 to 1.4. However, Quadrant doesn't seem to show much improvement (3056) but then again, Quadrant isn't the most consistent benchmark.

is it just me or does the phone seem smaller than a international gs2 across the front of the screen? did they drop it down to 4"?

Corporate users love keyboards. They are also a prime target for LTE. Going this route kind of makes sense if this is their first LTE phone launched. I'm glad I got the unbasterdized version. Remember, the Z/R got FCC approval on AT&T's bands too. Maybe they'll carry that one also as their more consumer oriented version.
i'm not convinced this is att's official (or only) sgs2. the layout is completely different: camera placement, bottom physical button for instance.

Look like this...
SGH-i897 is the model number for AT&T's SGS1 so the model number for whatever phone's in the first post uses the same naming convention. Last round, Sprint got the keyboard. This time it looks like it'll go to AT&T.
damn, you're right. our only hope is this is not AT&T's version.
My biggest concern is that AT&T will screw with it so much that we'll need special developers for it. I think I would lose my mind if I went to flash a super duper kernel and it blew up in my hands.
Thank goodness I got the unmolested version of this device. Leave it to US carriers to take something amazing then ruin it.

Even if they left the majority of the phone as-is, you'll never be able to flash international ROMs due to the different radio(s). I'm sure devs working on it will be able to re-use a lot of what's already been developed but the phone will be too different to share s/w with other versions.
I just got really dissapointed really quickly. Im fine with having four buttons but the slide out keyboard is almost the point of being useless

The captivate for ATT can use international sgs 1 roms with a kernal that rotates the screen correctly the only difference is that the FM radio didn't work on the captivate as there was no FM radio.
ATT world phones use the same international frequencies as international phones. i currently have an internationall sgs2 and am using it with att with 4g.
keyboard not for me.... Good that I got the international sgs2
Also the Samsung galaxy R kinda looks nice and solid, even though lower specs and slightly thicker.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Its like they didn't want to release a phone thinner than the iPhone and maybe this even dissolves them of being liable and possibly being sued for selling it as-is. I'm not trying to be a fandroid or anything but I can't help think the ongoing legal battles between samsung and Apple somehow effected the outcome ... disenchanted ... but still optimistic ... would be nice to get new dimensions and weight of this bastardizes phone.

Big plus is that it's alegedly equipped to access Att LTE.
This data connection really has me teetering on selling it.

What is going to be your next phone?

I have had my Epic since launch and I'm running the Clean GB rom and it's great. I really like the phone and have no problems with it. But, I know this phon will not last forever. I have to have a slide out keyboard because I have big fingers and typing on touch screen doesn't work very well. Plus I run my business for my phone so I have to type alot.
I just went to sprints site and I see they didn't kill the epic like was reported before. But, I don't see any new flagship sliders. Anyone know of any new flagship sliders on the way in the next 6 to 8 months? I'm open to all brands or os. Thanks
I'd like to know if anyone has information as well. I don't plan on buying any other phone for awhile, unless a new high-end sprint slider comes out. Which won't probably happen soon, since they're keeping the epic on the line cause they have nothing new coming, where with the EVO they had like 2 news ones already lol.

I like the Samsung Note, looks cool. Even if it is the size of a small country.
I want LTE, that's really the only requirement I have for a new phone. Bigger screen would be nicer, and I'd like a platform that's easily rooted. When I bought my Epic and Moment, I didn't really pay attention to that but now I think it'll be what I look at first. No point in having an uber cool phone if I'm stuck stock.
But I lubs my epic....I won't be leaving it soon.
Im am also hoping for a Sprint version of the Note, or anything with a similar sized display. I know some dont like the screen size, but I would love it! I would probably be willing to go up to 6 inches for an Android phone and happily still fit it in my pocket.

honestly the lte galaxy has peeked my interest, I had figured I'd wait for SG3 but once I saw that announcement I was like ... hmmmmmm my one real dislike on my phone is the speed of the internet (or lack there of) so the LTE is a huge pull for me.
I really like having the keyboard but with the larger screen the virtual kb should be much easier to use and I already use swype more than the hardware keyboard anyway.

What announcement are you referring to? Is the SGS3 going to be a non LTE phone?
I have an upgrade in July(Got the epic the week it came out). I'm looking at the Nexus, but I feel like I should hold off for a little.
I don't know yet, I have grown to not depend on the KB as much as I use to, so maybe the Nexus.
Thinking about going for the Nexus as my next phone.. but then again I may just wait a bit to see what great LTE phones come out.
I'm also interested in the nexus because it is so open. Specs aren't that hot but unless your a gamer the gpu isn't a huge deal. Should get full cm9 and miui support pretty fast as opposed to waiting many months.
Sgs3 will likely be next gen hardware, but waiting for updates, and the seeming lack of organization and inability to fix issues (key skip, gps anyone?) Makes non nexus hardware a tough sell.
If a top tier phone focused on battery life (ala razor maxx) launched on sprint, that would also be very tempting. But would have to have an unencrypted boot loader.
Sent from my SPH-D700 running CM7
Given how Samsung has treated the Galaxy S line with updates, I'm not so forgiving. I think I am going with the galaxy nexus when it comes out. That way I can get instant updates.
Thinking about getting the galaxy nexus when it comes to sprint. However I am perfectly happy with my epic on virgin mobile for the time being.
Next phone - Something loved by CM devs and/or obligatory Nexus device.
.... But with CM9 coming to the Epic I'm thinking I might be okay to just run with this phone until it dies.

Not really loving it...

Well, been using my GS3 for about 4 days now and I must say that I am somewhat underwhelmed by it so far. The jump between my EVO to the Epic 4G Touch was much greater than that from the E4GT to the GS3 (as expected). However, there are 3 gripes that I just bothering me more than I initially thought they would:
1. Camera - The Epic 4G Touch's picture quality is light-years ahead than that of the GS3. This is really unacceptable for a flagship device. Sure, the shutter speed is quite fast, but the quality is just not there. Part of the reason I skipped over the Galaxy Nexus was the camera inferiority to the E4GT and here I am with the GS3. The HTC EVO LTE at the store seemed to take amazing pictures. Haven't compared them side-by-side, but I feel I'll be more disappointed if I do.
2. The power button - I don't see a lot of people complaining about this, but I'm having a difficult time adjusting to the power button. The curved bezel in conjunction with the flushness of the button makes it hard to find/press it most of the time. Even though it feels quite clickable, it takes some digging around every time I need to use it. I'm hoping that the Slim Case I ordered will help with this as the cutouts will guide me better. It's a small gripe, I know, but it's enough to annoy me.
3. Speed - I know that this phone will smoke most of the competition, including the E4GT, but I'm not really blown-away by it. Once the apps are opened (which I admit to being quite fast), it seems to take longer for the information to download and appear (Play Store, Facebook, etc). I don't know if it's the connection or the phone itself. Never had this issue with the previous phone.
That's about it really. I know it's nothing major, but it's enough to taint my experiences. I'll give it another week before I decide what to do with it. But I'm really leaning towards the HTC EVO LTE (even though I find it hideous) or just going with a Galaxy Nexus (and not have to worry about future upgrades, etc).
Sorry about the rant... just had to let it out.
Speed -
You don't feel smoothness , and fast information because android
The problem is not the device , its the software
Android is still "buggy" , i have Asus Prime Tegra 3 -and i dont feel smoothness
Maybe next android version will be more smoother and faster
Just return it and stop complaining

The power button on mine is not quite right too, it is less flushed against the bezel compared to the volume rocker and creaks at the touch, it also feels spongy when pushed. That's not enough to slate the phone though because I know the capabilities of this beast hence I'm waiting for my exchange. If yours is the same ill advise you to do the same.

You're using the Sprint version right? If so, why are you posting in the international GT-I9300 forum?
Plus, it's already been quoted in several reviews that the US versions have a slight lag during usage that the international version does not. Just return the phone and move on.
@Stea1thmode: Thanks bud! Will do!
@everyone else: Take your meds and learn to deal with criticism.
This phone was really smooth for me. Bur my major problem is not being able to get into download mode.
The screen is also mediocre. =/ Wondering if I should have bought LG Optimus 4x instead, I only picked this phone for the custom firmwares..
There's nothing worse than having an S3 on Sprint. It's bad enough that you have to deal with the inferior CPU, but also the non-existent LTE network that is set to debut sometime between now and when hell freezes over.
why do US variant owners come to the international section to B!TCH and complain?????

Criticism would be if you told Samsung that some things could be better. You're just complaining about a phone that doesn't live up to your standards.
