Review from engadget
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/20/t-mobile-g2x-review/
While most of the hardware in the G2x hits the spot, we're a little underwhelmed with the display. The 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480) IPS panel looks good on paper but misses the mark when compared to the competition. Sure, the colors are rich and the viewing angles are wide, but the LCD washes out more than expected in direct sunlight and suffers from a significant amount of backlight leaking out from the edges of the screen, resulting in visible "stains" on solid, dark-colored content.

It's getting rave reviews, the only complaints I have read are the light leak and the Euro version comes with a hdmi cord and the us version doesn't. Other than those two complaints this phone seems to be a winner.
Oh damn, I'm still up in the air between this one and the SGSII. Looks like Sammy's gonna win in the display dept. This is pretty disappointing to see; especially since we know LG makes the screens for the iphones. SMH.
Don't see much of an upgrade from my vibrant. Now if it had a 4. 3" screen, I would run and get one today I hope we get phone with a screen that big soon.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
People should really wait this out. The Vibrant is more than good enough for now, why rush and get the newest flawed product.
I've had 3 phones in the past 2 months, lost a mt4g over the weekend, got a gs4g on Sat, returned it today got the g2x and other than missing the optical mouse on the mt4g, for what's out there currently this phone is by far my favorite....but really how come phones are now lacking camera hw buttons and notification LEDs, that has been irking me all week, and I would take a vibrant over a gs4g because of the internal storage
im trying to wait for the galaxy 2 but i doubt i will be able to wait and find my self getting the g2x
Played around with it today at the downtown Seattle TMO store, and the screen was a major letdown for me. I went wanting to upgrade. The kicker was when I asked if I got the upgrade they said I had 3 months before my 1 year for discount to upgrade. Grrr. Wonder if the HTC Sensation will be out by then, bigger screen, faster processor, etc.

Yah, you're right. I'm deciding b/t SGSII and HTC Sensation. HTC seems to be a better choice.
Anybody knows how GPS works on HTC products ???

usually, perfect.
I wouldn't count on saying that SGSII would have a not-working GPS..
i'm sure Samsung learned from their mistake..
i mean... the GPS bug was found out like a month after Vibrant's were sold...
millions sold.
They can't re-call millions of sold products...
i got one today. while i would love to get a galaxy s II im thoroughly frustrated with samsung.

Indeed. At times it seems some people buy phones here just for the sake of having a "new" one. Why change when you've a device that works just like you want to? Better specs aint everything, looks can be deceiving.

You're right but everytime I compare this with my Olde Cliq, I piss off .Except for the not too good speed, everything works nicely and its GPS just simply blow Vibrant one out of the water (locks within 5 seconds no matter what roms I put on it Eclair, Froyo or Gingerbread)
So the LG G2X runs the Tegra Duel Core, the HTC Sensation will be running their Scorpion duel core chip, and the Galaxy S2 will be running what processor?
I remember seeing something about the HTC duel core not being as good as the Tegra 2's? how about the Galaxy S2 duel core?
I know its a lot to ask, just wondering if anyone remembers seeing that HTC chip was not as good as the Tegra or what the Samsung will have.
I think it will be good to compare this as it seems like these are the 3 phones many of us are trying to decide on/wait for
Got my g2x on Tuesday, and rooted it last night, the screen is a let down my is minor compared to some overall love it, someone just finished recovery and cm7 or gingerbread STABLE real soon.. the only Sammy products I will buy here forward our their TVs

its no comparison SG2 all the way!!! but if i cant have that then my runner up will be the sensation

is the Evo 4g basically outdated already? with the samsung galaxy s and the droid x coming out all i hear are better screen better processor pretty much better everything since even the 8 megapixel camera on the evo is lousy. really makes you think....
no phone will be the best for more than 3 months, ever
Not being the latest thing doesn't equal outdated. Frankly after having the CDMA Hero forum here be such an asset to me, I will follow the phone with the most developer pull.
Evo is it for me until Sprint drops the next flagship, then I will continue the never-ending game.
Huzzah for competition and technology!
The camera is actually fine, idk what problems your having with it but it will get better thanks to our amazing devs. yes it has a few quirks they are working out still, but im sure the droid x might or the samsung epic 4g. its apples and oranges, sprint vs verizon, 4.3" touchscreen to hardware qwerty. all clocked at 1GHz. i dropped $500 on the evo and dont regret it at all. plus we have the strongest dev community at xda, cant underestimate them either.

There's always something better just around the corner. The EVO is a great phone, are there other phones that may be slightly better coming soon, yes. It happens every year in every industry as companies build toward christmas and then there's a lul during the winter months as they put the finishing touches on their spring/summer releases. It's just the way the industry works.
I don't like Samsung since they have a bad track record of handling their older devices. Plus the modification on the UI makes an update seem even more delayed. Evo is still the best bet IMO.
i personally like the evo alote. done some modding here and there and now im just really hoping that there able to break the fps cap on the 002 devices. it runs smooth never have i had to restart it unlike my old hd2 that needed atleast 3 restarts per day. its a great device and i guess like someone else said its a never ending cycle of better devices coming out.
droid x is missing a frontfacing camera and is on verizon which will cap data soon.
Its other hardware is definitly better, but i dont think it would noticable under 95% of the conditions you use your cellphone for.
Also motorolla locks there phones down making it much more unlikely it will have a large dev community.
The galaxy is also probably a little better and a version is even coming to sprint. But still not worth the hastle of trading in the evo now and waiting for it. By then something even better will have been announced.
I think the evo is still the best option for a year or so when the next iteration of smartphone comes out. probably dual core
Evo is Sprint's flagship phone for a while. I doubt they'll be dropping a new one anytime soon. I'm happy that newer Android devices tops another. It helps the overall goal of the 'Openness'. I welcome something better. Because I know that theyll get ported over to the Evo.

Samsung managed to fit a QERTY keyboard in a 14.2 mm phone. It is only a 1.5 mm thicker than the Evo (lot of wasted space inside).
The only thing that I'm not impressed with the Evo is how 'thick' it is. Galaxy S and i4 are both so much thinner.
Sprint was smart by releasing their device first. Now everyone is following suite. WE can say that all these other phones are "me too phones."
Definitely not outdated.
Droid is not 4g. But the Galaxy Pro is with Sprint so they have 2 4g phones now (if only they had the 4g network!)
The droid has the same TFT LED screen as the EVO (slight higher resolution, though not noticeable to the eye from what I can tell). Samsung is now withholding their AMOLED technology for their phones for the time being.
Each company needs a comparable phone to stay competitive.
Because all these phones are coming out within weeks of each other, the Evo is not getting the press anymore. Hell, now that the droid x is coming, the iphone4 has lost media attention too.

good luck with Emulators considering that Samsung devices do not recognize multiple keys at the same time. Try pressing forward and turning...it doesn't work.
Samsung may look Greener but don't be fooled into jumping the fence.

HTC 4G Evo Review
I can't stand the samsung phones, especially after seeing how they treated the Moment (worse than the Hero was treated by HTC and Sprint). Not to mention I think the Epic looks like crap, and the Evo just looks freakin sexy
Touchwiz is pretty damn ugly and it's quite pervasive in the Galaxy S operating system. Then again, there will likely be custom roms and lots of support for the Epic since it will be on all major carriers. The screen kicks the EVO's ass and it's allegedly quite responsive, unlike the Moment. I think we need to wait for full reviews of the Epic.
I'm keeping my eye on the Epic too. There were some good points to the Moment but the bad outweighed the good.

ya they are big..a damn holster would like so freakn silly for these phones.. hell the one for my hero with the seidio 3500 extended battery is huge already.lol
I think 3.5 to 3.8 inch would be my range as far as screens go.. any bigger and to me its like a mini tablet.lol
but like all will skip samsung because of one reason. they never have any good extended batteries.. unlike htc... where they are plenty... so might get a evo ( maybe ) around dec.. who knows.. still love my hero...to even think bout it.. I mean look at the dream..lol they got froyo.. the hero will still get support for a awhile..so why switch..when that money can go to something else.. like food, lol

the Evo will fit nicely in my back pocket. Hell, it'll fit nicely in my front pocket of any pair of my jeans. And it'll rarely be in my pocket anyway, since it sits on my seat in my car when I'm driving, and it'd sit on my desk while I'm at work, just the way my Hero does now
But the hero fits in my watch pocket also the epic is supposed to have a faster gpu. And I love my hero, but I like the idea of a keyboard for gaming.

Both phones are nice and I think it comes down to three main factors imo:
1. Will Samsung Epic be rootable, and if so, will Dev support be equal to the Evo;
2. Do you prefer a physical keyboard; and
3. Do you prefer Sense UI over the Epic's UI
The thing that sucks (well, actually good) is that technology is always advancing and new devices are being released every few months and each release tries to out-do the last.
Personally, I'm going to say Samsung Epic since I am on a Hero and have problems using the keyboard. I'd like to give a physical keyboard a try for a few months.

Hard to say. This is how I see it.
Epic: Best hardware, good physical size.
Evo: Full support of xda.
Top-notch hardware vs. top-notch modding community, it's a very hard decision (for me, at least).
I'm leaning towards the Epic. What keeps me on HTC phones is the support of this community. If that is going to carry over to the Epic, there is no real reason to stay with the Evo. HTC has poor support for their phones which has been proven by their lack of porting Froyo to the Hero. Clearly it is doable. Additionally, if the Epic crosses carriers, we will see a lot of great minds working on the same phone.
Ive read that the actual processing power on the galaxy s is quite better than the snapdragon processors, so if that's your thing...
Plus the pervasiveness of this phone might lead to a lot of work getting done in the xda community.

Agreed. Though I already know I won't be switching to any of them. I'm happy with my EVO but I have to say, if the EVO had that Super AMOLED display... jeez! Look at that Galaxy S startup screen! I love how AMOLED screens make the phone look like a real PURE black slab. I've actually been searching for a screen protector for my EVO to make it look consistent when the screen is off (all I've found are privacy screen protectors but hear they make the screen unresponsive, and mirror protectors have too much glare outside apparently).
The Galaxy S Series phones do have many pros but I really have no need for a faster GPU (I don't game much outside of Drop 7 or Speed X 3D). TouchWiz isn't very appealing but the new version has some REALLY cool features judging from the Youtube video showing it off. But still, the EVO does everything I need and more and the developer community behind it is the best hands down. I have no battery problems, I've already been guaranteed a replacement for light leakage when the new shipments come in and the 30fps has a workaround, and will be fixed in due time I'm sure (thought it never really bothered me in the first place).
I'll hold out for the next monster phone, which I'm sure will be available around the holiday season. I have another upgrade in October.
I also want to watch and see if Samsung has improved their support for their devices and wait and see what problems/issues arise from the Galaxy S lineup. If Samsung can prove to me that they've changed their ways then I'd be more than happy to be an adopter of the Galaxy S2!
Quite frankly, I thought the video review by that guy wasn't great at all. I don't care about his opinions, I just want to see the results/facts. I'll make my own judgments. That said, the Galaxy S is one sick phone, something I'd consider getting, but at the moment I have no need for it nor do I wish to get rid of my EVO or remove myself from the best community I've seen since registering with XDA.
Though, I will say -- being a Sprint Premier customer, I do have the option to upgrade to a new phone come November, so we'll see. I get a new phone about every 8 to 12 months anyway, so when something better comes along, it's only inevitable that'll I'll end up looking into it. However, one thing is for sure -- I won't be buying any phone that doesn't have a the same size screen (4.3") or something very comparable. I can't even look at a small screen anymore.
I love my Evo but seeing some of the performance on the Galaxy S, I wish I had this choice a month ago. *Grumble*

Yeah I thought it was just me for a second but I was sitting there thinking "I KNOW my Evo doesn't take nearly that long to load up". His Evo was also extremely slow and choppy. When I run the Mario Live Wallpaper, everything is fast and smooth and scrolling stays smooth and intact. His wallpaper lagged a lot. He must have a lot of stuff on his phone that's slowing it down or something.. and I thought I had a bunch of crap on mine...

Personally, I am holding off on AMOLEDs for the next few years. It's a up and coming display technology which will replace most, if not all conventional LCD's.

But IF the Evo 3D turns out to be the Optimus 3D with the OMAP 4430 then that is what I will get, otherwise I'll hold out for a phone with the OMAP.

I'm swinging towards getting a Nexus S too as soon as it drops... I can't stand some aspects of this epic
I know ALOT of people say the Nexus S is basically another Galaxy S phone, but most Nexus S owners say its a completly different phone. So I think I'm going to get the Nexus S and test it out and see how it performs against the Epic, and go from there.
I'll know in October 2012. I may not even want a smartphone at all.
Not a Samsung for sure. To be honest, I really thought that the Epic was the best of the Galaxy S phones. And with all the hype and advertising money behind it I thought for sure a ton of devs would get an Epic. Well that hasn't really happened.

Well the internals are the same.... but it's a whole different approach to the OS and hardware.
It doesn't have Gorilla Glass, doesn't have an SDcard slot, and it doesn't have some of the other tell-tale signs of SGS hardware.
It's actually most like our epic though than other US SGS phones. It at least has a flash and a FFC (If you use it.... I find it a useless feature on my epic, purely useless). It doesn't have the keyboard, which is actually 100% a benefit for me. I hate how my Epic feels and I know I'm not alone in saying that my epic has a loose screen because of the sliding mechanism.
Honestly the way I see it is that the Nexus S is a slightly different version of our phone, with a little bit more durability because of the lack of keyboard and a lot more longevity because it's a direct from Google supported phone. That's the real kicker for me... I've spent hours trying to make my phone less like an SGS and more like a normal Android phone. I'm running a rom without a trace of TouchWiz, I have had launcher pro installed since the very first day I got it. I have a Gingerbread theme to make it feel less Samsung based and more AOSP-ish.... I don't want a single thing that's related to Samsung that isn't direct AOSP. That's why I think the Nexus S will be perfect for me.
Oh and did I mention AOSP and no keyboard?
Whatever I buy it will have a PowerVRSGX54x graphics chip. Has anyone seen the benchmarks from the iPad2? Holy ****. Yea, I will be staying away from any Tegra 2 device, what a bust that was. I mean completely outclassed within 2 weeks of launching on a mass market tablet. Ridiculous.
Just for those wondering, our epic is basically an iPad. Almost identical hardware. So I will be looking for a phone with hardware similar to the iPad2, or the true sequal to our Epic4g.

You can't compare Linpack scores across different operating systems.
I see a dual core Nexxus S 4G coming up in August. Not sure there will be any dual core software, but I'm sure it will run single core software just fine. The best part for me is the google updates.

^Now if that Is true then I will definitely be getting the Nexus S!

Ill wait until the succesor to dual core phones come out
Come on lets face it if we get a dualcore now it will just be out classed in half a year and my epic can still keep up with them kinda so no point of ugrading yet

Probably not, but damn even comparing it to the original iPad its a crazy big improvement. Nothing close to that big of a jump has happened going from a single core to a Tegra 2 on Android.
Hey everyone,
yesterday was a tragic day for me as my beloved Vibrant has fallen off my pockets because of my insecurities of not securing it safely after hanging up on a friend. I was washing my car, my friend decides to call me to and asks me if I can go with him to give him some advice for a new android phone since he's going to be joining in the android family. Unfortunately, after hanging up, I get a broken LCD touch screen phone and he gets a new one. So, without further a doo doo. here it is.

I would love to buy a new LCD Touch screen, but for what it's worth $85+, I might as well just get a new phone.
So, any suggestions for phones on a T-Mobile Network?
SGSII
HTC Amaze 4G
HTC One S (waiting on this for now...)
Another vibrant for cheap until sgsiii comes out. The ii isn't worth it in my opinion and the amaze isn't so good. Ive never been a fan of hard So no opinion on that.

Yup SGS 3 is supposed to have LTE support with out sacrificing Exynos and that is amazing..
I got the sgsii and regretted it. I should have kept my vibrant untill the 3 well. If you can afford phones whenever u want get the two but if not get another vibrant for 100-120 ans just use that

I would definitely wait until the SGS3 comes out as well... or when it is officially announced at the very least.
you'll find other phones to drop in price by then. personally i wouldn't settle for a "new" phone right now bc they're all generally on the tail end of what the trends have shown
at the very best, you'll end up with a phone that may not be completely LTE capable, a screen's resolution only able to boast up to 960x540, and a battery still in the 1600-1700 mAh range.. seeing that phones in the next few months will all have at least 720p screens, LTE, and better battery life.. i would wait it out
thanks for the input guys. I wanted to wait out for the GSIII to be honest and keep my vibrant till then. Right now I'm using the myTouch 3G/Sapphire I believe... garbage..
I'll wait and see for the GSIII.
I'm the same boat as you bro. I'm using a iphone 3gs while waiting dor the sgs3

If you wanna upgrade on the cheap, I suggest an LG G2X. Dual core, FFC, great support from xda, and its about $225-250 on eBay, and a little bit less on craigslist. This definitely is a great phone with a custom ROM.

wouldn't really call that a reasonable upgrade from the vibrant at that price..
dont mean to bash but having a dual core processor and a FFC for $100+ more over simply replacing a vibrant seems a bit much when a couple months of waiting will provide much greater features for the long haul

Well they were asking about phones like the SGS2 and Amaze, which definitely aren't worth it now. And he's looking for an upgrade, and that would be the most reasonable one, considering the phones ahead. But I can definitely see your point.
I couldn't stand having the Vibrant after I broke it twice. Lol

I went from a vibrant to a sgs2. I don't regret it at all. Sure the sgs3 will be better but honestly it won't be much longer after it comes out, that everyone will be talking about the next big thing. There are some really good devs over there. As some of you know Eugene373 just got a vibrant, plus we have a guy named thederekjay who is making unbelievably good roms and kernels. This phone will be around for a while.

Sorry to hear about your Vibrant. :/ If I were you, I'd wait it out before spending a good amount of money on one of the phones that are currently out. I'd go for the Samsung Galaxy Note (if it came to T-Mobile). SGS3 would definitely be worth the wait, though.

The note would be very cool if it ends up at T-Mobile otherwise I'd wait for the sgs3. As Much as I wanted a new phone bricked, roman and the other great devs have breathed great new life into my almost 2 year old phone with ics. I've never held onto a phone this long there just in my opinion nothing worth early upgrading to. Good luck

I'm actually leaving. As of 3/6/12 my internal SD card is corrupted on my Vibrant. Might disassemble and part out because the screen is perfect. Bought a SGS2 that got "Lost" in the mail..... that is a $350 hit as of now. It is SO ridiculous, the post office said they delivered it so they are washing their hands of the situation. I have spent hours between EBAY PAYPAL and USPS and it does not look good for me . Funny thing is just try to get ahold of EBAY customer service. I only got through after calling PAYPAL directly and then they transferred me to someone at EBAY. Have just bought a spanking new Galaxy Nexus with signature verification through FedEx so we will see about the funny business that may come with this most recent purchase.
