Google is starting to roll out ICS for the Nexus S - Galaxy S I9000 General

Bring on the ported Galaxy S roms
hXXps://twitter.com/#!/googlenexus/status/147783081426817024

we got faster news here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1395828
we are installing it already
this in change is good news for SGS i9000 and it variants, as the NS i9020 is very similar to our phone

update Koush already made it available to flash via CWR for i9020

This is great news - the ICS ports on the SGS are pretty damn good already, with this we should have some nice improvements.
AND Android 4.0.3 was released today... http://www.xda-developers.com/android/android-4-0-3-announced/

I really want to see an improvement in the current ROMs for Galaxy S. This will really help !

haha! wow! now this is something that really gets me excited
if anyone is interested to see a preview:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPAF2Rsdm1I
It's in spanish (i think). But who cares, all we want to see is how it works anyway, right?
From what i was able to observe in that video it seems smooth, but i would have definitely treated it a bit harsher just to see when it starts lagging/if it all xD

Good news from Cyanogen

I've stumbled upon this thread at cyanogen's blog:
http://www.cyanogenmod.com/blog/cm9-progress-update
If you look at this part, is good news for us, since Acer Iconia and Asus Transformer, as far as I know, share most of the hardware...
The first devices (besides the Nexus S, which you can already get from Koush’s section on ROM Manager) that we’ll have ready will mostly likely be devices based on OMAP4, MSM8660/7X30, and Exynos. We also have some Tegra2 tablets in the pipeline such as the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Asus Transformer.
Yishhh.... I hope it won't take long for a first release!
Happy to see this. I just flashed my phone a few hours ago with a (quite buggy) alpha CM9 build, and while it's quite slow and has a lot missing, I must say it's beautiful and very fun to use. Maybe blazingwolf can help cyanogen bring it to our tabs?

Maybe if you get on your knees and whine to cyanogen like you did with wolf they will? Ya never know, but it's worth a try at least?

Are you satisfied with the development on SGS2 ?

Well to be straight on point i dont think we even have as mush as development as the previous Galaxy S1 . Just look at their android development thread and on the first page itself you can find 3 ICS roms . Two of them usable for daily driver , one is CM9 which is still buggy (So is ours ), I mean to say that we are dependent only on the CM9 team for the ICS and we dont have anyother dev to do that for us .

samsung galaxy s2 is a perfec phone with perfect firmware.
reason ppl coming here is to change the looks and play around with their perfect phone when there is nothing else to do.
the reason for no ics is because ICS is still buggy on its own so there is no point making roms untill google fixes the base.
If you desporately want more ICS development, then get developing.
If I had the brains to do, I would do. But I don't, so I can't.
Its pretty hard to develop anything without code. They work with what they have and if what they have is crappy, so yeah.
The SGS1 is similar (or almost exactly the same) as the Nexus S so since source is out for that they just took some stuff there and used it on the SGS1. Makes it much easier. We don't have a phone similar to ours that we can borrow bits and pieces from. They tried that with the Galaxy 7.0 Tab Plus but didn't work out so well.
Actually this is the first Smartphone where I don´t feel the need to change much. It´s already damn good.

ICS is still buggy? I had daily drivers ics Roms on my nexus s backup in october!

Same here best phone ive ever had so far, only things needed to change
where optical and removed the unneeded apps.
ICS seems nice once it's stable and bugfree untill then........
Not sure I would agree.
I am running the Simplistic ICS ROM RC3 as my daily driver. Everything is super smooth from my limited experience. Granted, these are based on Sammy leaks but it beats the deadlock I saw over on the RAZR forum.
Pretty happy overall.
Very happy with my current rom, so yes I am happy overall with development
Nothing really I would change. Even with ics out, I prefer the majority of stuff touchwiz has. Simple tweaking is pretty much it.
Common guys i think ur not getting me i mean to say that we have less developers
I think it's because the original Galaxy S is older and developers have more experience with the hardware. For example it took almost a year before Cyanogengenmod was available for the Galaxy S.
I have to agree with the OP. Seeing as a galaxy s2 is such a popular phone u wuld expect more aosp roms for ics :L

I tend to agree, the Original Galaxy is more established.
The trouble is, the S2 is sandwiched between the Galaxy S, and The upcoming S3. (Stuck between a rock and a hard place)
A lot of Devs and Users will no doubt be waiting to upgrade to the S3 upon launch, and maybe leave the S2 in the shadow somewhat.
Also unfortunately I would imagine a lot of Developers are staying away, considering some of the Flaming that happens on here.
We shall see. But Overall I'm more than satisfied with the Development.
Regards
Judging the level of development of a device just based on ICS is utterly stupid - did you look at all at the Gingerbread development that happened on this phone?
ICS for the original Galaxy S is a FLUKE. It's almost unheard of for an AOSP bringup to succeed on a higher version of Android than what is released for the phone due to lack of compatible binary blobs for vendor-proprietary parts.
The Galaxy S is lucky and VERY unusual - it has a high number of hardware similarities with the Nexus S, which is by its definition, a phone that has as many components open-sourced as possible. As a result, much of the Nexus S source code was adaptable to the Galaxy S as part of the CM7 bringup process.
The I9100 doesn't have this hardware commonality with a Nexus device. The RIL architecture and interfaces are completely different, the GPU is completely different, etc.
Exactly what I was going to mention. Usually porting or developing on phones is easier when someone else with similar hardware has done it before. You just borrow their work and adapt it. The Galaxy S2 doesn't share its hardware with many other phones. Hell, the whole Galaxy S2 line is super fragmented anyway! You have Tegra, omap, Exynos, different cameras, different specs alltogether.
If you just think of the international version... We're pretty much set apart and in the dark with all the proprietary code that the phone has. If you want a quick development path for your phone, you'll need a phone which has generic hardware or fully opensource code... Which is far from being this phone's case sadly.
Of course a lot of the SGS 1 roms where just cut and paste jobs .
Rom +Theme A then Rom + Theme B does not make two roms .
I am more than happy and the answer has always been you want more roms donate a phone to a dev instead of expecting them to pay for your flashing habit .
jje
It must have something to do with what can be achieved; with the exception of new releases from Google the only areas of interest really are storage space and speed. Both of which are pretty good as stock on the S2 where as development for the Desire was huge as it could be faster and, as stock, had a lack of storage space.
Even if you didn't like the look of TouchWiz you could choose a new launcher rather than rooting and flashing new ROMs.
if you want a regular updates and more development then maybe the phone for you is the galaxy nexus. pure google phone and a phone to get updates straight from the Google itself. I have not gone into the forums over there but i am pretty sure you have proper roms coming out through your ears...And i mean roms probably making that phone even better than it already is..and as being so new still the development for that can only get better...
The same for the S2. once the source code is released then you will see roms coming out and development will for sure will be on the high again and you see proper ICS roms coming left right and center...So be happy with what we have here and do more tweaking to get the max out of the phone instead of wondering if the development is slow or not..

XWJW1 Last official release for Galaxy S?

It's been a while since anything even slightly official has come out since XWJW1 and JVU didn't seem official or very tempting at all. Is this it? Have we reached the Omega?
And if not, any clues as to when a new one will be coming out? Hearsay is welcome.
For the record, I think xwjw1 is great (stock odex with semaphore 2.5.0bm and the blue boaffa mods), I just want to know if there is anything to look forward to.

Yes, ICS, forget about Samsung's official stance on releasing it for the SGS, the devs here are doing an awesome some and ICS Slim, is fast, sleek and so far, I've had no problems with it.
Thank You Samsung for Not Releasing ICS for SGS!!!

For once I am happy that Samsung is not releasing ICS! This means I get a vanilla OS from the wonderful community here!
I don't seem to be using TouchWiz for that many things! And if at there are things that I use, I am sure to find alternatives for all of those in the Market!
So I get the ICS "new look" and all the goodies with it - without the old UI!!! It's amazing!
Oh so why should anyone buy galaxy s2 with official very limited and faulty software development ? i think i will put on hold upgrading and wait for googles motorola with amoled
devs in here are making crap as always, doing stuff that they like - when something is crashing and something else is working 1% faster, ICS is pretty much funny and flashy compared to touch wizz which is to get the job done easier and faster

Yes, the SGS is EOL as far as Samsung software is concerned. Luckily this community is big enough to get past this.
We already have a few stable enough AOSP ICS roms and a port of S2's official ICS in the works, so there is still life left.

News regarding our beloved SGS1

Hey all, tried searching the forum to make sure this already wasnt posted up, and found nothing, so here it goes!
While doing some homework on the latest official ICS release for the SGS2, came across a thread somebody linked up in the SGS2 forums regarding the new firmware release, with that was some new info on new firmware to come for the SGS1 and other devices by months end! Looks like this could be that "Value Pack" that was leaked/talked about some months back. Although not ICS, at least Samsung still have the First gen galaxy still in mind - Check the link from their Facebook page! Apologies if this is already posted up somewhere, if not, go nuts peeps and start getting excited i guess

Good spot!
Wonder if it will be enough for people to switch back from the various custom roms, doubt it though. I'm happy with MIUI until phone upgrade time comes around.

Not in this case.... If they do the same as with the ICS of SGS2, (but without ICS, just their crapy mod) you better look for a good custom ICS or enjoy gingerbread for the rest of you life...! Seriously, aosp ICSSGS works tremendously, you can consider it almost as stock ROM, and forget about Samsung and their ****...
Not to mention some carriers like Bell here in Canada are unlikely to push another update. Pretty sure they will leave it with the crappy 2.3.3 rom.
It may be interesting to see what they come up with but I doubt it will compare to ICS ports like ICSSGS. The big question will be lag and UI jerkiness: ICSSGS has almost none, it's night and day compare to any of the 2.1-2.3.x Samsung roms I've run.
It's probably just referring to the official release of the JVU value pack.

I can almost guarantee there wont be an update for carrier branded variants around the globe, just too much work for them in their eyes to deliver updates when they can sell something new an updated, and continue with the same cycle! Just look at the US, all the variants for each carrier and pretty much no love which has to suck! Whereas this news relates to unbranded handsets, which gets looked after just fine IMHO. Ok, updates arent always flying through but who really cares, as long as it works! I have an unlocked i9000 (euro version) and am now on the official JW1 (via kies) and have not had a single problem what so ever! But ill take whatever update that comes. If it keeps my SGS kicking till the S3 arrives, then im happy. Just good to hear Samsung is taking this stuff seriously. Again may not be ICS but still good on them for doing something. People can keep blaming Samsung for lack of updates, but most that do that are on branded handsets and should be hounding their carriers for an update!

really, 2.3.3? That's insulting! Could they pick any worse firmware to stick to? Anyway, carrier policy it's always hilarious... Why on earth has the galaxy mini better firmware than the galaxy S? (I know the answer, rhetorical question!)

Anyway, I don't think those customers will care at all... Cause if they cared, they wouldn't hesitate to flash any custom... I just think this value pack is useless whatsoever.

Before ranting about how Samsung sucks blah blah and messing up this thread, please read this --->post<--- first.
I will start a discussion about JellyBean (Android 4.1) so that our forum will not be cluttered with JB stuff.
Although i was late in viewing the live stream of google i/o i found this info over at phonearena. Jellybean will remove lag on devices that will run it? If so it would be cool to have it on our device (even though i only experience micro stutter lag). Hope it removes those little lag i experience sometimes.
Source: http://www.phonearena.com/news/Android-4.1-Jelly-Bean-is-announced-waves-goodbye-to-lag_id31659
Do you think our device will get updated to JellyBean? My personal opinion is yes because it is just a point release not a major overhaul of the OS. Maybe it will be less hassle to developers on porting it from ICS to JB than from GB to ICS (since this one is a major update). What do you guys think? Will it finally remove the micro lags we are experiencing or will it just be another android update without much improvement?

I dun think sammy is going to release a JB rom but we will see AOSP/AOKP/CM9 for sure there's still a lot of people who haven't switched to the SGSIII
I really hope they update sgs2 to JB. Like the sgs1 which got 3 updates (from eclair, froyo then gb). I hope if sammy will update the s2 to jb they will not mess it up, although i think it will still have the same UI.

4.1
"The first side of the Jelly Bean update is the way it interacts with hardware. One of the main complaints with Androids is that it often gets laggy even on the most sophisticated devices. Google has finally radically addressed this so manufacturers and developers can make their devices lag-free. The solution is called Project Butter and it comes with triple buffering so that the CPU and GPU work without waiting for each other. This means scrolling, zooming and virtually all actions become much faster."
It took them 4 MAJOR versons to fix this! Shame on you Google!
Are you guys really gona move to an OS without Flash support?
I know i am not!
4.1 Jelly Bean
4.1 is Jelly Bean.
Super excited for the release of the new ASUS Nexus 7 tablet, which will run with 4.1 Jelly Bean.
I expect great performance from this latest update. I expect that if they are marketing it to be lag free, than it should be.
Cannot wait to see for myself!

I purposely don't have flash installed on my home PC. If a video is in Flash then they wont get my views then simple. HTML5 or GTFO!
I don't expect Samsung will release it for SGS II.
I doubt JB will be worth at all... ICS except few changes like icons ect. is worse than GB...

Flash is becoming obsolete. Adobe has accepted html5 is going to replace it and is ceasing support for it soon (though its pushing devs to Adobe AIR platform).
And the video play back is very good. Try you tube opt in and look for a no-ads video to test it, better than flash imo.

Why do you all think we won't get this for our phones? I'll be really disappointed if we don't get it. Samsung has had access to Jelly Bean for some time now (according to Google), and since it's a rather small update and well within 18 Months of our Galaxy S2's update span, we should really get it.
I just have one question: will Samsung upgrade our devices? 4.1 sounds cool, seems smoother, otherwise Google woudn't release this.
