hey there.. i just want to learn @ask on how do root apps work like what they do to gain root nd how methods do to i really like to now just like to help ppl or learn more for my own use plz i really want to know.. WOW im so curious!! hehe thanks
Just my guess, I think they get root by requesting it, then the dialog appears and you allow it. Its then saved that that app can have root permissions. Don't know the technicals of how it request it but download some tools, and take an app apart and explore it.

Rooting is equivalent to to #su access in the Linux world. Which gives you complete control of your device by accessing the /system, /bin, bootloader and recovery images. By doing this you can greatly increase the options for our devices.
It's done by exploiting a security flaw in the firmware.
Some tools that require root access would be Absolute Tools, Screen Cast, Titanium Backup. If you are using a game or a productivity app that is requiring root access delete it straightaway.
And this is a forum, you don't have to use SMS short hand.
Ohh .. wow that's hard.. nd I can do this by my self?
If you're asking it - no, you can't.
Can i ask u why???.. because u look like u now ??
Because:
If you want to make Android apps, root or not - you need to learn Android development, install SDK, install Eclipse, read a lot of literature, make your first "Hello world" project, complete some more tutorials, think of a simple app that you want to make, and Google a lot while making it. And of course, you need to know some programming before, on whatever object-oriented language - since Java is quite simple to understand if you know C++ or alike. Then you need to decide, what do you want to make a root app for, and Google your way to understand, how should your app ask for root privileges on execution. Then you should learn how to sign your app.
If you just want to know how to modify apps, how is Android built, how do you make changes to files etc - you'll still need to understand all the above, but you'll also need to read some decompiling guides for using smali/baksmali, learn how to use apktool and various Java decompilation code viewers, perform some simple modifications to practice, and then do some more complicated work that you set your eyes on.
And to look for exploits that allow rooting, you need to be a VERY experienced programmer, easily navigate tenths of thousands of lines of C code, know your way inside drivers, etc.
And if you need me to write you all that - it means you're nowhere near starting it all, means you can't "do it yourself" any time soon, or at all.
Oh wow... thanks man.. nd sorry if i got u mad.. haha.. nd i just wanted to now if i could make a root ap.. lol.. im just a 15 noob kid.. nd thanks u really now

There has to be a guide somewhere for those of us that have no idea how to get rooting done. Toast, Unrevoked..Geez! Where do you begin?
I am a convert from winmo so this is all new to me...I am fairly clear with Toast's instructions, but a video or pic tutorial would be greatly appreciated. I did some moderate reading on this, and would still feel far more comfortable "seeing" it done!

you begin with the post entitled "{tutorial} how to root \0/" in the Android Dev section. i'd post a link, but i'm a lowly new user.
looks like windows adb utils are included in the evo-recovery zip, i'm on linux and had the android sdk installed anyway.
Adb is in the android sdk.
Follow the instructions in the tutorial in dev section.
Cmon guys work a little for it.

i think folks who are new to this need a guide to all the acronyms floating around. i mean how many new users konw what "adb" is? its Android Debugging Bridge...
there just needs to be a fundamental guide.. nuts and bolts.. to get people in tune with the process THEN they can start the actual root sequence...

There are really tons of stuff, you just need to search in the development section.
Anything worth doing takes effort. All the answers are around if you look. Not trying to sound snarky or elitist but just like you I had to spend time looking for my answers.

ROOTING?
FLASHING?
HACKING?
Yes im a noob to this xoom thing, but i wan to know more about it, pls can anyone tell me wat the different is ?
Rooting is obtaining superuser rights and permissions to your Android software.
Flashing is re-writing portions or all of the Android software.
Hacking is manipulating the normal operation of software or systems.
You should also learn about Google search engine. It is a great place to get answers to questions such as these and many more.
Hi all,
I just registered on xda after I rooted my Arc yesterday (thank you all for the tutorials).
I've searched for a way to root my Xperia Arc, I've also found 1000 different ways to do it but none could provide me a step-by-step guide to root my Arc on my mac.
Yes, I know it might be strange (some comments, I've seen) to buy an Android phone when you own a mac but I like Android phones. Besides I don't think it is any different from buying an Android phone when you own a PC or to buy an iPhone when you own a PC.
That said, it didn't make it easier for me to root because almost all guides are written for Windows.
My intention is to write a step-by-step guide on how to root on macosx. I figured it would be a better idea to ask:
1. if it has already been done (Maybe my searches were not that good)
2. and if not, if some Arc users need such a guide?
Thank you all for the replies!
People usually just use Windows as attempts at using a MAC usually fail.
From My Arc Running CyanogenMod.7.1
Alright, so not worth it?
I know you can run a VM to run all necessary programs but assuming you can't run Windows (no CD), you're kinda stuck.
It would obviously help those with a Mac, but I think this would also require some Dev input which is why most people give up and end up using Windows.
From My Arc Running CyanogenMod.7.1
Oh yes, I know and I wasn't actually referring to myself, DooMLoRD made a bash script to root on Mac OSx.
I just wanted to detail the steps I've done to root my Arc on Mac OSX in a more comprehensive way for noobs (like myself) and credit the members (like DooMLoRD) for their work.
It's just because as a noob when you search on the forum for a way to root on MacOSX, you find yourself with ton of advice but no tutorials like on Windows.
I'm certainly not an expert in this, but can't you boot Linux from a disk or flash drive and root it using Linux?
You just made my life easier, Linux I can run, I wasn't aware of the possibility. I figured if there weren't any for MacOSX, it was the same on Linux. Thank you very much! I'll drop the idea of the guide and try to learn a bit more instead
I'd still do a guide for people, that way at least we can link people to it who need it.
From My Arc Running CyanogenMod.7.1
Where should I post this "guide"?
This would be great guide actually since I'm also a mac user but it always pains me to go back to using windows for certain tasks lol

1. YES!, if you really want to know what rooting does,
-rooting is the process of gaining superuser access or administrative access to all system files, that is why the typical stock roms from samsung are not rooted so that the normal user does not have administrative access to manipulate or change and system files including apps cannot change the system files, rooting can cause a software malfunction (soft brick) if you in any case wrongly do something and mess your system,
2. apps that require rooting are those that need to manipulate or change something inside the system files,
please we have google to search for such facts and answer,
if you want a quick answer right away the search for "what is rooting android" in google,
By staring at this post you have agreed to waive your right to privacy,
complaints will be trolled accordingly

Of course their is but the chances of it are very small you'll have to go over and above disobeying every instruction in order order for that to happen

doomsday coming make your nandroid backup before its too late !
First know why you want to root your phone, and if you follow the proper procedure with the appropriate update.zip file, your phone won't be bricked.
I think link2sd and root explorer are the first thing you will ask after rooting.
Finally there's an awesome button named SEARCH. just try it bro.

take a bat or any other solid object...
lay it down on the floor...
then lift it about 1 cm from the floor..
now drop it...
the chances that states the bat will break = chances phone getting brick...
**rooting is new for me...and i am noob to root...**
