Where's rooting 101? - EVO 4G General

There has to be a guide somewhere for those of us that have no idea how to get rooting done. Toast, Unrevoked..Geez! Where do you begin?

I am a convert from winmo so this is all new to me...I am fairly clear with Toast's instructions, but a video or pic tutorial would be greatly appreciated. I did some moderate reading on this, and would still feel far more comfortable "seeing" it done!

you begin with the post entitled "{tutorial} how to root \0/" in the Android Dev section. i'd post a link, but i'm a lowly new user.
looks like windows adb utils are included in the evo-recovery zip, i'm on linux and had the android sdk installed anyway.

Adb is in the android sdk.
Follow the instructions in the tutorial in dev section.
Cmon guys work a little for it.

i think folks who are new to this need a guide to all the acronyms floating around. i mean how many new users konw what "adb" is? its Android Debugging Bridge...
there just needs to be a fundamental guide.. nuts and bolts.. to get people in tune with the process THEN they can start the actual root sequence...

There are really tons of stuff, you just need to search in the development section.

Anything worth doing takes effort. All the answers are around if you look. Not trying to sound snarky or elitist but just like you I had to spend time looking for my answers.

Ask and you shall get.
Here is a video of doing the whole root process. link
The guy has a site here is the link.

How to install some other CM6 theme

Hi guys,
I am using shubCRAFT version of Android for Leo and I am really happy with it.
So, I like to do some customization on my phone, but I don't know is it possible to install
any CM6 theme. I tried with ROM manager, but unsuccessful..
any tips?
thx in adv.
Tip one, read and search, then if still in doubt, read and search, also, read and follow forum rules.

this is actually a good question considering our htc hd2s aren't the typical android devices...I'd be quite intrigued to know how to install themes myself. Yes there is a theme forum dedicated to this but to be frank for the linux and adnroid n00b it is both difficult to follow and broad.
I'd like to see a good write up about this personally

I would be interested in understanding how to theme the android on HD2 as well!
i do not think that the rules valid for native Android phones are applicable in this case.

I agree. I have noticed in the market there are other apps like PandaHome etc and I have also noticed that there are themes associated with them. I have not tried any of these yet, but i might soon.
What's the worst that can happen, right? (Famous last words...)

Android rules apply. Depending on what you want themed, there are lots of tutorials on it in the android section.
I always use adb push... after I've customized what I want via drag and drop using an archive manager like 7zip or fileroller on linux.
I'll be putting a tut up on my site soon but in the meantime feel free to ask any questions here or via twitter.

good call.... for right now, ADB or droid explorer are about the only ways that moving files to/from android are possible since we cant flash a theme via recovery.

ADB push will work for just about anything as long as you have SU or root access. If you get errors or ADB says that permission denied you will need to either mount /system or adb shell and then type su to get superuser permissions
like stated above if you have questions, you can hit me up via twitter. its alot faster than the messages here mainly because i can reply on the go without having to use the web or anything.

Thanks to djR3Zfor the Evo one click guide

Thanks for the guide, it was very helpful. I had been missing the all important step of update the hboot driver and the app was not giving me a good error message (just said it failed to install recovery image). I appreciate the step by step guide. I really much prefer manual rooting over the "click on some program which may do something I don't like" style! But it seemed to be the way to go for the Evo.
Thanks again...maybe some day I'll get above the 10 posts needed to actually post in a dev thread.
Lynne
Really, I've prior to this rooted mine and hubby's Heros, installed multiple custom ROMS, have the android SDK installed, have compiled and installed programs. I just don't get on the forums much, apparently...other than to read thru them occasionally.
I've even tried to answer people's problems, but that 10 post thing has kept me from doing so.
So, I'm going to make sure that doesn't happen again!!!
sigh, it still won't let me post on the dev forum.
You're doing it wrong.
Also, that's why XDA has a "Thanks" button to prevent people from having to open threads / posting saying thanks.

Need Help Rooting, Really Confused!

Guys I have Nexus S i9020T runnig Android version 2.3.4, Baseband version I9020XXKD1, Build number GRJ22. I have looked around a lot and am confused on how to root my phone, is there any simple way of rooting my phone with super user? I run a very old PC so installing the sdk is pretty hard, so could anyone give me a step by step simple tutorial? This is my first Android phone and am a complete noob at this
Did you read the sticky yet?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007782
It's a step-by-step tutorial and exactly how you should do it.
The SDK shouldn't really be a strain for your PC.
Good luck,
Greetz
You don't need the entire SDK. Grab PDAnet USB divers and then choose to download just the 2.3.3 SDK and Google USB drivers from the SDK. Worked fine for me this way. You don't need all the stuff the SDK wants to install by default.

Yes that guide works regardless of what Android version you're using because Android version is not a factor. It's the bootloader.
No, it is impossible to root without the SDK because you have to unlock the bootloader using the SDK. You won't get stuck at the Google screen. People are messing up because they're unable to follow instructions.

I've helped people in this topic many times.
The easiest way I can say is to first download the Android SDK listed in that step-by-step thread. It's not that difficult and you shouldn't be scared to do it. Unless you're flashing something for another model of the phone (such as NS4G) everything should be fixable.
Download http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html to your respective OS. If its for windows, I know it says recommended for exe but I prefer using the .zip version of it. So download that first if you haven't already.

Sure, but I can't guarantee that I can respond right away. But if you're able to do it now, that would be the best and I can help you step-by-step to achieve this. It shouldn't take more than ten minutes.

If your internet is really slow and you have to download ROMs after rooting. It might be rough on your end because ROMs are at least ~80MB+

Don't know why you're downloading the JDK but okay. Extract it and rename the folder android-sdk-windows-r12 to /sdk/ and place it on the root of your C drive. So it'd be located in C:\sdk\
You need to put your phone into bootloader mode (while phone is off; VOL UP + Power) while plugged in. Do what the instructions say and set up the drivers.
The step-by-step guide is self-explanatory. I don't really want to paraphrase what the guide says because it's pretty simple. Follow the guide you linked earlier and tell me if you experience any problems or have problems understanding what is being asked.

switch to the directory where you downloaded & unzipped the ..\android-sdk-windows\tools

download: http://www.mediafire.com/?y3is5c9n5fi1sd6 instead
when you finish downloading it, place it in C:\sdk\tools\
and type:

The .exe of what? Have you read the thread? If you did, you'd know the RUU or the HTC sync exe is not a required step.
adb works on linux without drivers.

[Q] Root, Recovery, development questions.

Hi, everyone. I'm not new to android, or to the forums; but the older I get, the more I want to know. So I have the VZW S5, and everyone is dying to see the bootloader unlocked so we can do anything to the phone. So my basic question is, how can the bootloader be unlocked in theory... on any phone? I've had close to a dozen android devices, all rooted, most with custom roms. I'm just tired of following a step by tutorial on how to do stuff. Can anyone point me in the direction on how android works, what files do what, what to modify to make custom roms. I know I need to start with the basics, I can program in C, what's next? Thanks everyone.
