Been gone for a few weeks..

Playin w/ roms on my new Rezound... Anyways I noticed the wife's KF got updated to 6.2.2 and FFF/twrp got axed.. Came back lookin for an updated way to get it back quickly. From my last 30 mins or so of reading it would seem the KFU and burritoroot are like fragmented now or something. I tried KFU for twrp and it failed- then I saw there was a burritoroot v3 but it doesn't install a recovery. Just wondering if there's any automated way to get it all done again or if I'm gonna have to keep searchin for links to recoveries etc. If so, no biggie- but if there's an easy way to get twrp back obviously I'll go that route. If there's a thread on it- I must just be missing it- granted I've had a few tonight.

I rooted my 6.2.2 kindle with burritoroot3 and then used KFU to flash TWRP recovery. Make sure you have the updated run.bat found in the KFU thread before trying to flash TWRP

Yep- I found the post from stevenmirabito seconds after posting this damn thread and I've already got twrp back on.. Sorry for the wasted thread.. Still kinda wondering why BR3 hasn't been worked into a new version of KFU but I'm sure if I was really interested enough there's prob some threads on that too- hopefully no drama. Anyways- thanks BluesHawk for responding to my question.
One more thing- I'm assuming it's ok to remove the old burritoroot? Got two icons now

Once you got the burritoroot you may as well uninstall unless your sentimental :_

Well- I didn't do perm root- so that I could keep the streaming vid working. I fig'd I'd keep it around though for temp root/unroot

Unnecessary... Just perm root it and be done with it.
Use OTA Rootkeeper and you will be able to view your Amazon Videos.

Oh ok cool- like I said I've been gone for a while.. Pretty sure last time I was active on these forums OTA RK was a no go for prime video.

It has been the only method that I've ever seen.
o Using OTA rootkeeper use Unroot
o Go to settings -> Applications
o find Amazon Video and force close it
Now run Amazon Video again and it will work. You can even go back and root using OTR Rootkeeper and it will still work until your reboot your device.
This works on the Stock roms... CM7 and ICS doesn't

Cool thx for the info.. Last time (6.2.1) I did perm root, installed market and other apps, FFF&twrp, then unrooted (had to manual delete su files on the device)- so OTA-RK sounds easier. Unfortunately, this is my wife's fire- so I don't get to have that much fun with it. She's way into the amazon ecosystem and likes the stock rom.. So unless ICS final just kicks complete ass- I'll prob have to buy my own to play w/ those roms.. Not even sure why I ended up putting twrp back on it really- I just can't help myself!

If on CM7, you can leave rooted, use the browser to view Amazon video if you set the user agent to Linux desktop, and that works.

XOOM2/Xyboard Everything root and more!
From 26/03/2014, I will no longer be updating this post as I no longer have the device and Motorola won't be upgrading the device further. Please instead of sending me PMs, go to the Q&A board or post your comment on this thread.
Note: This method will not work on Windows 8. Only Windows XP, Vista, 7, Linux and Mac OS X is supported.
Root Method - Honeycomb
1. Download the Windows version here, or the Linux/OSX version here.
2. Your Computer must have Motorola Drivers installed before rooting and connect your device with debugging on to your computer via USB. (Mac Users don't need drivers)
3. Extract the zip file from the download link, and run “run.bat” (on Windows) or “run.sh” from a terminal (on Linux/OSX)
4. Your device should reboot a few times during the process, don't worry.
5. Then you should see a finished message on the Root Method Window. At this point your device is safe to be removed from the computer.
7. As you are running Honeycomb if you are reading this then you should be receiving the ICS OTA soon. So lets backup your root so you can restore everything root after the upgrade (saves time). Download OTA Rootkeeper and backup root.
6. Well Done! You have root. Enjoy root and be safe.

Root Method - Ice Cream Sandwich
1. Connect your Xoom2/Xyboard via USB to your Windows PC. Install Motorola Drivers from here.
2. Under Settings > Developer Options > Hit the "Enable USB Debugging" selection.
3. Download the Root Installer from here. (Says for Droid RAZR but also works on Xyboard and Xoom 2]
4. Unzip the download.
Bootstrap/Safestrap[Custom Recovery]
Waring: DO NOT proceed if you are inexperienced. bootstrap is messy and is only needed once we have ROMs cooking. All questions about the recovery ask in the developer thread.
1. Install the Bootstrap APK file.
2. Allow Superuser Powers.
3. Read the instructions which is displayed on the user interface.
5. You will now see a splashscreen after you reboot (before boot animation), here you can decide if you want to enter recovery or continue with boot.
-Method Under Constuction-
Unroot or temporary unroot
Temp Unroot - If you need to unroot for any reason and come back at any time, then install OTA Rootkeeper and then select the option "temp unroot). This will remove root without restarting and you can restore by a touch of a button.
Full remove of Root - If you want to complety remove root all together, if you need to send in your device for repair or trading your device. Install Ginger Unroot and continue with the onscreen instructions. This application has confirmed to work on the Xoom2/Xyboard.​

This root method should work on all Motorola Devices running honeycomb or gingerbread. Try it out and see if it does

I did the US ICS update on My UK Xoom so im on 4.03 at the moment - i believe Motorola added some file which prevents me so far from rooting with the current one click programs ? so would it be safe to try this ?

The method is safe to try but Email Dan if you have any issues when rooting.

This root method very well may work on the Xoom with ICS, never hurts to try it. I don't see how you can't root with an existing method though, with the Xoom being fully unlockable and all...

the thing is that maybe you can, but you might not want to Unlocking wipes all your data, apps, etc and also permanently sets a variable stating that your warranty is gone.
It might, for example, be desireable to create a backup of all your apps and data using titanium backup, which requires root, before unlocking your xoom.

Does this mean that more knowledgeable folks can create custom ROMs now, or does that still require an unlocked bootloader?

No, we need to figure out a bootstrap for custom roms. No custom kernels.
Also, the method to fix adb remount is reset every other boot by the kernel, init.rc rebuilds local.prop on reboot as a failsafe and can't be changed without a custom kernel...

Just to let you know this does not work on all Xoom models like you say. Here is my thread with my specs in it. I have tried it three times following the directions to a T and it never gets past;
"[*] Initiating Phase 1...
[*] This may take a few minutes, don't mind the buzzing."
I have now let it run for over an hour each time and it never goes any further and my Xoom is still not rooted. It did not even ever reboot on its own. Does anyone have any suggestions? If not I'll just use some threads 1 & 2, I got from a friend.

Not this method. It is supposed to unlock and root motorola devices in 10 minutes without deleting any files. When I read about this on android police I was very excited as I never rooted because I only needed Superuser for my Xoom (never was interested in ROMs) and could never justify scraping everything just for this.
I tested the files here on a windows 7 machine... if I run from command at step 2. I get su permission denied. If I run the batch file I get "failed backup" loop after the device has been detected
tried the portable one click .exe found in "Motofail: Universal Motorola Android Root Tool (Portable)" works perfect on my bionic
obviously fails to remount as it does not include local.prop from step 5. so it's not working on xoom
This is the most awesome root utility I ever came along. It took something like 6 mins to root my phone without losing any files, if I can get it to run on my Xoom this will be just a dream come true!

Update: This root method does not support the Original Xoom. Confirmed by Dan.

Kingo Root, not kingroot, has Amazon devices listed in compatible devices.

I have been watching Kingo Root for awhile and I just noticed they added Amazon devices to their list of compatible devices. Its a PC root so you would need to attach the fire TV to your PC. I do not have a cord to do so, but its worth a try.
Also, I know windows notices the Fire TV, but not sure what driver is needed. If anyone has any details on an Amazon device driver for windows, please let us know.
If anyone tries Kingo Root, please report back.
Please do not talk about how to get Kingo Root to work if does not work, cause if it doesn't work it just doesn't work. Please no getting mad about anyone else's comments, cause everyone has a voice.
There is also Root Genius that roots a lot of devices, but I do not know if it has worked on any Amazon devices.

OK here's a quote from Amazon.com about installing the USB drivers for the Fire TV
"The USB driver for the Fire tablets also works with Fire TV."
So I guess all you have to do is install the Fire tablet driver.

Not sure I'm much help here. I have rooted aftvs and don't really want to mess with them. However, I did try it once with my aftv stick with no usb drivers installed.
At first it said to enable usb debugging (which pretty sure isn't an option on stick)
Then it recognized the device as aftm
It started checking root status and downloading scripts but it just repeated that loop for about 10 minutes.
I'm willing to try again later. In the mean time if anyone has a link for drivers please post. It'll save time hunting them down. I actually have them on my Mac.
But this does seem more likely to work on the box since you can enable usb debug there.

Just google "Fire HD USB Driver". Download and install it. If your computer notices your device then USB debugging should be working or it wouldn't notice your devices.

Tried again same result except this time I put the stick back in the tv. It actually installed kingo root on it. So I launched it. There's nothing to click and it says usb not connected. So I plugged the usb into my computer. In the kingo app on tv it says "rooting..." but on the pc it just repeats the same loop as last time.
There's no fastboot on stick. The box would at least have a chance of working. I think that's why it can't reboot which it needs to do during the process.

Well we now know it doesn't work on the stick. Hopefully someone tries it on the Fire TV. I noticed with Kingroot, it would say that your device may need to reboot during rooting, but I also noticed a couple times, not every time though, Kingroot would say it couldn't reboot the device. So I am guessing maybe we stumbled upon something. Maybe part of the process for some devices Is a need to be rebooted during the root process. I have seen videos where some devices would actually reboot during Kingroot and be rooted after the reboot. Maybe a dev with more knowledge on why a device would need to reboot during the root process can give us some info. Maybe the problem with the Fire TV is that Kingroot and other apps like Kingo Root cannot reboot the Fire TV, but that just an idea. It does not sound likely, but anything is possible.

I have another idea that I am not sure anyone would be willing to try. Maybe someone can run Kingroot or Kingo Root on a rooted device and see what happens. It would have to be someone that has more than one Fire TV incase they messed their device up, but I am sure it could be easily fixed by flashing a pre rooted ROM. Maybe it could give us a better idea of what Kingroot is doing and what it might take to root, if it actually worked on a rooted device.

It says the stick can connect to adb via USB. Perhaps installing the correct drivers will help.

Back up the Kingo Root app and uplod the apk and I'll try installing it on the Fire TV box. If you don't know how to backup apps, you can do it with ES File Explorer. It says "app" under the library tab, click it and it will let you backup apps.

Just got your post. This is really just the UI for your phone/tablet so you can see the progress and if it works it'll probably warn you not to disconnect the device. But here you go.

I just tried Kingo Root with an unrooted Fire TV running 51.1.5.0 over USB and it did not root the device.
Kingo Root connected fine to the Fire TV over USB and installed v1.2 of its APK onto the Fire TV. I then clicked the ROOT button on the windows app and it began to do its thing. After several minutes of letting it run, it began to just bounce back and forth between "Download dependency files" and "Checking root status". I then tried the whole process again with the v1.3 APK that @KLit75 posted with the same result.

I guess its case closed for unrooted Fire TVs and Fire TV Sticks. I am still wondering what kingroot or Kingo Root would do on an already rooted device. I know it sounds kinda risky, but it may actually be able to commplete its process if the device is already rooted.

I had basically the same results except I let mine continue to run. It eventually said "root failed". Connected fine. One note: it did install the correct usb drivers for the Fire TV. I used version 1.3

I'm not gonna have time for a little while. Both my aftvs get used a lot so I'm not willing to risk (even if its slight) losing one of them for an undetermined amount of time. If that changes and no one steps up I might reconsider. However, surely there are better eyes than mine when it comes to diagnosing what might be needed.
Here's a thought. You could email AFTVNews. He's got many aftvs, some of which he probably just uses for testing purposes. He'd also be a good resource since he has tons of experience with this device. Actually its possible he already tried this root method.

He may not have been paying attention to who was posting on the thread, but he was actually talking about asking him to run Kingroot or Kingo Root on an already rooted device, to see what haapens so that maybe we can figure out what they do during the root process. My thinking is that you can write to the system if you are already rooted so maybe Kingroot or Kingo Root can complete the process if the device you run it on is already rooted. Who knows, it may be hugely helpful towards achieving root if someone runs these apps on rooted devices and reports their findings, that is if it completes the process on the rooted device.

I must've somehow responded to a different thread thinking it was the one from last night. Anyway if he tried it on a rooted device and it doesn't bring about any new info then I guess this topic is dead.

I know doing a factory reset was tried on the Fire Stick but I didn't see where it was tried on the Fire TV (i may have just missed it) so I tried it. Did factory reset and tried Kingroot 4.0 and 4.1 with no success. Also tried the PC version of Kingroot and Kingoroot with no success. Just wanted to make sure I tried everything I could to get it to work before giving up on it. Only have one rooted Fire TV so I can't mess with that one.
Just wanted to pass on my results.

I tried the OS 4.5.2 rooting from the forum and that did not work. I tried KingRoot and its works. Can someone test this on OS 4.5.3 or higher OS please

From what I've heard, 4.5.4 can't be rooted. If you have a 3rd generation HDX, then you have to first downgrade to 3.2.8 and then manually update to 4.5.2.

Is this still true? Has anyone used Kingroot on 4.5.5.3? It looks like they are saying it works now...

Will someone please confirm? I'm about to take the plunge. I'm hoping the worst that can happen is that it simply fails. I can't ADB with my HDX 3rd gen (usb port won't interface with PC) so I won't have a way back from softbrick/bootloop.

You obviously understand the risk and assume you tried alternate (Moto) drivers along with different cables and host ports to confirm diagnosis. Note cables/ports that work on one device may not on another - especially finicky HDX hardware.
You're probabky not going to get a high confidence response to your KingRoot question as most take the full step of unlocking. Plus age of device and waning interest. Good luck.

Yes, I realized that the only thing that can go wrong with the root attempt (kingroot or otherwise) is that it fails and you still don't have access to root. No harm no foul. The risks come in when you attempt to flash a ROM and it fails by partially loading and overwriting/erasing critical files without completing (loss of power mid flash!) or if the ROM is incompatible in some way and you are unable to flash your previous ROM. That's where bootloader recovery software comes in (TWRP and the like). So that you can access the system before loading (or failing to load) the ROM, and flash over it or flash a backup.
Moral of the story is that YES, Kingroot works on HDX 3rd Gen on 4.5.5.3. I tried it last night and it worked. I now have access to the root directory. Oh, the places you'll go!!

Nope; root attempts can yield a bootloop or otherwise dysfunctional device. Glad all worked out for you.

Ouch. I didn't realize that. It always seemed very benign and I've never had it go wrong. I guess I'm used to devices that are designed to be accessible. Fortunately my HDX rooted without a hitch.

Fire HD 8 gen 5 - cannot figure out how to root

I'm a noob at this, and I cannot figure out how to root this tablet. Assume I know nothing of fastboot, bootloaders, ADB, which buttons on the device to hold for how long. I've been searching every way I know how. KingRoot won't install, neither will any other "easy" root .apk that I have seen.
Any help truly appreciated, there are so many advertisements on this and it is so slow I'm going to have to throw it away. I have got Google Play Store installed and working (most apps work)

Any help truly appreciated, there are so many advertisements on this and it is so slow I'm going to have to throw it away. I have got Google Play Store installed and working (most apps work)
