From the development side of things, I'm thinking that just about everything that could be done with the Evo, has been done as far as porting and builds. I know ICS is the new hot ish, but I don't think the Evo has the hardware to run this thing to its full capacity. We struggle squeezing new Sense roms onto our phones and there are always issues with something...even with AOSP, there are limitations. I love rooting and romming and flashing as much as the next guy, having done so for a year. I'm stuck on Sprint for the next 2 years, thanks to emancipating myself from my girlfriend's contract, I had to sign a new 2 year agreement and lost my upgrade til next October, if I didn't do that it would have cost a $120 termination fee...so I'm stuck with this Evo for almost another year and not happy....I wanted to upgrade to the Galaxy SII, was told there is no way, and I don't have $600 laying around. The EVo is an amazing phone, but I think its time is about up. Thank you to the Devs for all their hard work in keeping the EVO as relevant as possible...catch you on the flip

I just don't think our EVOS can handle these Roms ...and if they do, it wont be at the full potential...look at the 3.5 roms ...you gotta jump through hoops just to get enough memory to download an app. I like your optimism though HipKat....None of these devs even have an Evo anymore...they are just doing builds because they get bugged to death about and so many of these HTC phones are similar in hardware. Here's to hoping we can squeeze these things on our phones and they can run right! ^©][€€¶~

nah, give it some time. There are always peaks and valleys of development. Besides, the EVO has like 400 more ROMS than any other phone out there, it's safe to stay around for a while
I feel your pain at times man you feel like you seen it all man trust me sooner or later you gotta cure the itch by playing wit your own rom that's what I'm starting to learn playing with apps first theming then rom theming then full out rom build try it man this site has so much info and knowledge.....and flame wars lol but really don't just be a flasher become a contributor and your feelings will change

I have ran several 3.5 roms and never once had an issue with lag, battery life, or storage. I mainly run aosp, but I have flashed pretty much every rom available for the evo, and they all run just fine. I'm not too sure what hoops your jumping through, but evo development will be around for quite some time.
So i kinda see where you're coming from, but than again I kinda see where other users are coming from too. I think some devs have finally left the evo and gone somewhere else. I don't see many updates from the older devs myn, virus, azitio, but i'm also seeing new devs or maybe just new to the evo , are making some great some great roms. The ICS rom I've been messing around is really fun and fast. Makes the Evo enjoyable. So I wouldn't throw in your evo for a new phone quiet yet. Not to mention , i still think the EVO is a top contender than some of these new phones coming out. The Evo 3d wasn't anything special, and galaxy II wasn't that awesome either with all the hype. Duo core processors in phones are great but, are still NEW. I'm sure something special will come out eventually that will manually wash your car, but for now I'm happy with my Evo

That's totally cool, not many girls are flashers, and I've never heard of one dev'ing. I wish I had the time to mess around and build a ROM, but life happens. We'll see what shakes out with ICS and Sense 4, hopefully our Evos can handle it...Good luck with your project, can't wait to see it!

ICS is defragmented, meaning it needs less resources to run as it has a far better optimization than previous builds.

As far as I've seen, the HTC Evo 4G is the most modified phone ever. There's more ROMs, kernels, and tweaks than any other phone. I believe there will still be more cooking and developing to come, but with the new release of ICS, devs are knee-deep in code. So just be patient, when they get all the drivers sorted out and a stable public release, things will be booming again.

The Moment was the same way. Untold amounts of Dev work and is still being Dev'd to this day! lol
AS for jumping through hoops, A2SD is standard these days. A Simple flash of A2SD when you flash your ROM isn't jumping through hoops. Nor is moving Dalvik to SD Card. One simple command in terminal.... done!
I, too, have very very few of the problems that people complain about on any ROM. Very few have given me issues.
I was kind of feeling the same for a bit...I've been on Synergy for a while because I haven't really seen anything else worth flashing, and I absolutely HATE ASOP (AOSP? whatever.) ROMS. I don't understand how anyone could go from the amazing, fast, and simple Sense dialer to a dialer that takes forever to actually find the contact in your list then call. Now with ICS ROMS starting to come out, I'm excited again and hoping someone will make a nice Sense ICS ROM so I can enjoy my phone even more.
You could bite the bullet n pay the etf. It's cheaper then 2 years of contract payments...

The phone is only 12 days old guys. Have some patience.
I'm sure someone in the CM team will get their hands on a MT4G soon. If not, then I'm sure another capable dev will figure out how to port CM6 over to our phone.
Honestly, I'd be down to donate $5 to the CM team along with the OP. We'd just have to hope 88 other MT4G owners will do the same.
http://twitpic.com/35seph
CM6 for the MT4G is already built and bugs are being worked out. (Wifi, Camera, & BT)
Once those things are fixed we should be seeing a RC.
CM is working on a rom...the wiki page has a link for the glacier, there is just nothing on it yet...give him time...
You would be a fool to go back to the wobbly hinge G2 just because they have a ROM. This is a much superior device and they will come. Just be patient.
Some of you guys are being stupidly impatient. You can't expect a bunch of ROM's for a phone that achieved a permanent root just a few days ago.
Development is going fairly quickly anyway. Kmobs of CM already has a working build for the MT4G. That's pretty damn good and since in many ways the G2 is similar to the MT4G, things should go even faster.
Look at the G2 development forum, they've already got the G2 ROM ported to the MT4G. Another example would be VISIONary. It worked for the MT4G before it was even meant to.
Either way, MT4G users have no room to complain. The phone I came from, the Vibrant. It still doesn't have CM or a stock Android 2.2. Even the ROM's it has now took at least a month to perfect.

I hope I feel the same about my MyTouch when it gets here Wed (if UPS doesn't reschedule, like they always do). Right now, the Android that all other phones are compared to is the Evo (I have one). But in my town, which has 3 sprint towers... 2 of them have been down for 4 months and I finally gave up and switched to TMO. I hate giving up my Evo (rooted, custom ROm, custom Kernel)... there is so much support for it from software to accessories (I have the 3500 mah battery from Seidio). I'm going to miss all the goodies for the Evo while waiting for all the support to catch up to the MT4G (which it might and might not... we never know how much an individual phone will be supported). I am so surprised how the G2 got supported. Sliding keyboard phones don't usually get that much support because they are so flimsy. Let's hope this MT4G has as much appeal to the developers as it did to us! If I don't like it, I'll have the option of going to ATT sometime in Dec when they finish switching over from Alltel.

We will get more newer gb sense roms when a working kernel is ready. It slowed when tbolt came out, but the inc 2 will not slow us, neither a just that much of an upgrade imo. When our kernel is ready, you will see many varieties of ports for the dinc.

we'll get more ports when we get a gingersense leak. That rom is so outdated haha virus new port based on the htc kingdom sounds like its going to be a huge success for the evo.
A bit of perspective
Although I can feel where you are coming from on the fading of interest I wanted to chime in here to relay my recent experience with the incredible and its devs. My wife and I both had eris phones and were both rooted and running custom roms. The phone unrooted is almost unbearably slow and painful. Rooted is much better but still the phone itself is just so antiquated. I pushed Verizon to up my upgrade date and recently got the Thunderbolt. My wife finally got fed up with the eris and her upgrade date was too far out to push up so I got her a used incredible locally for about $170. Now comes the part that blew me away. The guy I got it from had it stock and never rooted. I did the research and was, as i said blown away with the sheer simplicity of the rooting and clockwork recovery rom experience. Thats all aside from the beauty, speed, screen brightness, perfect size, and overall satisfaction of the phone. I truly almost prefer it over my thunderbolt. The rom factory may be slowing down but this phone is an amazing device overall and the devs that have put time into it are to be commended in the highest. I can only hope that cyanogen and the others make my thunderbolt as amazing of an experience.
cant wait for gingersense. running CM7 2.3.4 but miss sense.

Windows is a non issue.. once you flash an android rom (w/ Linux kernel) the windows phone os doesnt matter as its just hardware at that point. Android rom uses the Linux kernel to communicate w/ hw.

I have noticed things are slowing down too. I got a Thunderbold day 1, which I love, no looking back for me, but my wife still has a Dinc, and I am always looking to update, it is currently running Myns Warm Z, not much else right now.
I am not sure it is slowing down so much as people are finding that what they have the love. I personally still flash a few roms every now and then but I always tend to go back to one... because It has the most of what I love. I think that always happens. I use to see this when I was running windows mobile htc 8125, people said that everything was slowing down but I think it is more the fact that you have know tried most of the ROMs. When I first got this phone I went through and flashed as many roms as I could. a few of them I am not going to try again until they get a few more levels up since I was not satisfied but there were a few that I really liked and I have flashed them when they come out with a new one. BUT I do always go back to my main rom.
So after all that I dont know if it is slowing down since I see new roms out every once in a while. I think that I just dont have the interest to flash them as often since I can say, I have already tried that. I will wait 3 more version before flashing that again...
You may have noticed that I didnt use one rom name since I do not want to discourage any ROM developer. They all do an "Incredible" job here no pun intended. Keep up the GREAT work and happy flashing.
SoBBie
I hear what you're saying, but there is still a lot of great work going on. The release of skyraider 4.0 was huge, and there are still a ton of roms being actively supported. Between CM7, MIUI, LiquidMetal, the z roms, and the stock sense roms, you can get just about any look you want.
It seems though, that most new ROM work, including ports, are the same old bases reworked with a twist. CM7 is nice, but doesn't have Sense.. The desireZ ports are nice, but still 2.2.. as with Skyraider.
I'm sure not knocking any devs work.. I use them and donate, just wish we had some new work coming our way... especially GingerSense!
I still see lots of development for the Inc. I am definitely really glad I got rid of my Fascinate for it two months ago.
Just my $.02
LOL, I'll have my ROM up and running soon... coming out of alpha soon...
Update: development is not dead, JT has resurrected it...Cm7 is amazing!
Forgive me if upset a few people with this post, but is it me or has the dev scene for this device died?
I remember the old school days when I had a G1 on T-mobile, we had a new rom practically every other day! I would hate to not to give credit to the amazing devs we have for our devices like JT and company but as of late things seem have died .
I remember a few months back devs were saying, we cant do much because we dont have froyo source...now we do and the scene looks identical. I pruchased this device because of its "raw power" which back in November was unrivaled, but looking at the vibrant forums and the epic there's tons of roms to choose from, VZW gets no love.
Before you guys get upset and some of my remarks, please understand my POV. Lastly, I realize that devs dont get payed to do this and do it as hobby thus I have no reason to complain, so this is just an opinion....let me know if you guys feel the same or not......
There's still a ton of development work, just nothing totally new recently. Everybody seems to be working on what is already there, just fixing and updating and whatnot.

What we are waiting on now is GB source.... LOL
In short you are pretty much right. Mostly everyone has moved on to bigger and better things. Now that all the spring goodies are coming out there are less people here to develop.
What we are waiting for really is someone to step up to the plate and take over. The devs that we did have provided a great foundation for someone else to work on.
That being said... the phone is still overpriced for what it is and Samsung has provided some practically unusable code to start with, from my understanding at least.
I can see the Vibrant forum being busy, as they have CM7 now, and likely other AOSP and AOSP based ROMs now, plus TW based ROMs. Not sure about the Epic, but I think they have a semi-functional AOSP base as well, and the Nexus S going the Sprint probably helped them out significantly. However, we're stuck basically with what Samsung gave us. The source did help out significantly for kernels, as it gave us something to work from that we didn't have before. However, the platform source did nothing. Also, there are only so many ways you can configure a ROM based on the stock software. If jt and kaos can get the last few pieces of CM7 fixed up, I'm sure you'd see development take off again, but until that happens, or until we get a new release or source, it will likely be semi-stagnant around here.
JT is working on cm7 I assure you. Latest build was today released in irc. Based on .35 kernel. Everything works but radio and sensors. So that's really good work if you ask me. He'll get it up to speed, jt is a very clever Guy.

well this phone technically is out dated in terms of whats come out since. and we finally have workjng froyo roms which is what all the hype was about. even with home computers you cant keep updating, eventually things dont matching up. just like with these phones. im happy with my fascinate and everything thats been released.

Evil Fascination had an update tonight. It runs fantastic and the theme is awesome. Im sure the community rom is going to have a nice update soon to.
The devs for this phone have been fantastic, they made this phone worth having even when it seemed like 2.2 would never see the light of day.
After the experience I have had with the fascinate my next phone will for sure be a nexus. Even if it means jumping ship to a different carrier.

development is relative...we never had a ton of kernels/roms/mods etc because we have a relatively small community
we still have several source built kernels, 2 versions of cm7 (one of which sounds like its advancing nicely) and several touchwiz based roms
if you want to really step back and look at things, we have mods from sbrissen no other phone has (or at least had first as they kang him quickly)...
we have miuiwiz which is a feat never done before (getting miui launcher working on anything but miui)
so for those that just sit around and wait for stuff to be released so they can flash every 5 minutes...too bad...go get a more popular phone so you can flash the kanged rom after kanged rom every day
or you can actually learn to do stuff for yourself like many have

if you want to really step back and look at things, we have mods from sbrissen no other phone has (or at least had first as they kang him quickly)...
we have miuiwiz which is a feat never done before (getting miui launcher working on anything but miui)
so for those that just sit around and wait for stuff to be released so they can flash every 5 minutes...too bad...go get a more popular phone so you can flash the kanged rom after kanged rom every day
or you can actually learn to do stuff for yourself like many have

^^^^exactly.
If you sit back and enjoy your phone with the new roms when they do come out, waiting for updates and new stuff comes quicker than you realize. Hmmm, I wonder who told me to enjoy what I have a while ago.... and in all honesty, do you really think the fascinate is out dated? My phone STILL runs circles around my bro in laws tbolt. And if anyone questions our devs ability....have you herd of punk kaos? Or jt1134? Or adrynalyn? Or sbrissen? If you are tired of waiting, go back to stock....you will realize what they have done for our phones.
I never once doubted their ability. Like I said in the OP , we a are lucky to have what we got. My point was that things seem to have died down, not sure if its the phone or the lack of interest. Back in november this was androids flagship device, and, I purchased it thinking that with its hardware and our bright developers, it was going to be a beast. I'm proud of the work done but until a fully working aosp like cm7 comes out, I dontt think ill be fascinated. All the touchwiz roms are fine but slow down eventually. Just expressing my opinion fellas.

what do you mean "slow down eventually?" ive never noticed this
and was there ever a time when tons of roms/kernels were coming out aside from immediately after an ota/source code drop/leak?

@Nitsuj17 this is a classic case of something that all people struggle with: a selfish nature. We, as people, are never really satisfied with anything. I doubt even a FULLY functional CM7/GingerMIUI would please people. It's just our nature. We are insatiable. This is not a flame or an attack of the OP, it's just simply an indictment of all people, myself included. Just my $0.02.

JT and I were talking earlier and it seems like Coolya and the gang helped with some kernel fixes that seemed to have helped a lot. So if all goes well, we SHOULD have official CM7 support coming soon.
If anyone is wondering EVERYTHING is working, including hw/sw codecs, Bluetooth, wifi, etc. As stated before RIL functions and sensors are no worky, but JT said that radio was his messup and should be a quick fix. ;P

So if he can get the radio working, we can get official CM7 support? JT is the man....
When we all probably switch phones we will still have a beast mp3 player if you ask me.

just one last thought...as for what is/isnt being worked on and released
jt and pk are still working on cm7 and seem to be getting closer and closer to a very polished product
imnuts and nemesis still work on kernels
com rom and miuiwiz are still being worked...and will have lots of new features when they are out...these things take time though, we could have constant updates or less updates, but of more substance
So I'm positive everyone see's this question all the time. But they always judge it on the stock phones. Well I'm looking to get one of these phones, but to ROOT them. Which one do you believe I should get and why? I'm also looking into battery life even though buying an extended battery isn't a problem. Also which rom do you think is best for your pick? Thanks in advance.
Will be posting in both sides to get more answers
Easy answer... look at the topics and responsees in both forums and decide which group you would rather deal with...
And then look at the rom and root options of both. HTC is on a whole nother level.

Well seeing how the Epic community jumped on my question much faster, with more people ... Lol jk.
But any more suggestions people? Thanks in advance
Do not get the Epic!!!!! I didnt like it as its made like ****. The shift is much faster and even my sister wishes she would have just gotten the EVO and shes not even a power user. HTC makes the best phones on the market and I will always be buying my phones from them.
Get the Shift, Root it, Install Shift Deck and enjoy an awesome phone

This. And I own an Epic (my wife has the shift). I'd never trade my Epic in for anything, at least at this point, but yeah the Epic forum is full of complainers, trolls, and guys with tiny wangs (or so I assume with how they have to constantly act like king s**t in the forums all of the time). And shift has a ton more devs, plus working cm7. But the phone itself is sweet, and faster (in my opinion, with the right rom), and has an independent number row. And the screen is bigger and looks nicer. I could go on and on about differences, but I've gotta run for now.

From everything I've heard, the CPU in the shift has the edge on the Epic, but the GPU in the Epic edges out the Shift. If battery life is important to you, I say hands down go with the Shift. I easily get a full day every day and my friend with an epic is always asking people for chargers, even changed all his backgrounds to black to save battery (doesn't save on LCD but on LED it does). He does everything he can and still struggles for a full day out of the thing. Now I speak from what he's told me, I've never owned an Epic myself. Overall I've been thrilled with the shift, does everything I ask of it with no lag and no complaints.

I certainly had this issue on stock rom on the Epic. I couldn't even make it through a work shift without the battery dying. But custom roms on the Epic blow that out of the water. I now can go a whole day of moderate usage and still have around 30-40%. But I don't know, I'm guessing with a custom rom the Shift still kicks the Epic's ass battery-wise. My wife is running CM7 (which the Epic may not see for a looong time), and I don't ever see her reaching for a charger or complaining of the battery. And being of the female variety, she tends to use a lot of the live wallpapers, widgets, etc...

The Shift now comes stock with Gingerbread from Sprint. There is no way to root it. You are SOL. I pulled all of my hair out when I figured this out.
Turns out Android (maybe not "Android", but the current ecosystem) sucks hard. Suckers like you and I come online and see threads and guides about rooting that simply won't ever work on our devices because they've been manufacturer updated. And sites like this don't seem to give a damn -- at least update the root "guide", mods.
Quite worthless. Don't fall for this BS. The Shift is again unrootable, just like almost all updated phones from Sprint. Chances are, with the devs having moved on or got lucky enough to have an old version of Android when they got theirs, all new ones will remain unrootable forever. #@(*$

Yes, you are absolutely right. The updated ROM from Sprint will never be rooted.
NEVER. EVER.
Has anyone tried to run an old Froyo RUU on a brand new Shift that came with Gingerbread?

You need to take a breather my friend. The stock 2.3 will get rooted in time, just like the 2.2 did. "Unrootable forever" is just an ignorant statement. If all you're gonna do is rant and rave a bunch of misinformation, please keep the post to yourself.
Back on topic...
I have a shift and purchased the Epic for my wife.
The Epic display is nicer, and the epic actually feels lighter (and is?) Than my shift. It also has more keys on the keyboard.
However, on stock ROMs my shift seems faster and has better battery life. UI's are a very personal preference, but I much prefer the HTC sense and overall software stack vs Samsung's touchwiz. It just seems to work better.
I've beeen running custom ROMs on my shift and most of them work well. About ready to try a custom ROM on the Epic to see if it works better...

ive been very happy with both my shift and the dev community here (who have turned me from an ignorant n00b-lout into a root-user) and all those who have helped me try and solve my problems.
As for rooting gingersense, it will happen soon enough, just give the devs here some time.
My wife has the Epic and I have the Shift 4G. I can't stand her phone, and she can't stand mine. Tho we both take our phone's off the charger in the morning and when we drive home, mine still is in the green where she has to use the car charger going home. Then again, neither of our phones are rooted. I have rooted her phone in the past, didn't seem to make much difference. Still running the crappy samsung software.

Is it just me or is Epic development almost dead?
Two-three months ago there was CM6,MIUI,CM7 and more original roms in the works, what happened?
Yeah i know that for CM7 they are waiting for official GB to drop but what about CM6 that was 90 percent finished and MIUI that was almost finished?
I know that we still got roms but most of them with exception of ACS and few others are mostly remixes and tweaks of stock rom.
Our Epic is way behind Vibrant,Fascinate and Captivate.
It's just you. Don't knock what the amazing developers have done for us. We have plenty of roms and we will have plenty once gingerbread drops.
I agree. Feel free to learn how to dev, though. You won't sound like a detractor from the forum.

Damn, I just hit 1,000 posts over there. Big part of it seeming smaller is that the only carrier with the Epic is sprint. Android roms aren't like winmo roms where all you had to do was provision a rom to a particular carrier.

good point
i got more thanks tomorrow.
This is my first experience with custom ROMs and I for one am very content with the amount of development for the Epic. I have looked at other forums and yes there may be a larger following, or more talk about development, but a lot of it seems to be garbage. I have flashed and used a few different ROMs now and they are all solid with few if any bugs. SRF is what I am running now and I have not found a single functionality issue. I also love that the Epic devs continue to improve their product instead of releasing some piece of crap ROM and never touching it again. Also the relatively smaller quantity of development makes things like qbking's videos possible and help all of us learn to better utilize the phones potential.
I say cheers to the devs for what they do and the time they put in! I could never accomplish even a portion of what they do. Thanks guys!

Quality over quantity anyday our devs cook up some amazing stuff for us.
Sent from my SPH-D700
I love this phone. That is all.
Sent from Godot's place.
we have several quality ROMs and Themes to choose from
It should come as no surprise really. There are 3 main reasons why it may seem development is slow:
Small community. Meaning that our sample set in which developers are drawn is smaller. Thankfully, this phone was top notch in hardware when it came out, so it increased our chances of having very talented developers since it naturally drew people who seriously appreciated hardware. Hence, why we have a small number of developers but they're all very very good at what they do. It could have ended up with a small number AND not a lot of quality.
Touchwiz. What I mean by this is that we're still waiting on a fully functional AOSP based rom, with CM7 being the closest to completion. Without it, all there is to develop on is touchwiz, and we've pretty much exhausted what we can do with it (so far). Once there's one ROM on AOSP, that allows for more ROMs to be developed on AOSP. Plus, the completion of CM7 could very well attract developers who prefer to develop on AOSP to try a couple projects, and have simply been waiting for CM to be completed. This all ties in with reason number 3.
Froyo. Like touchwiz, we've pretty much done all we can do with it. With the release of gingerbread, it'll open up a whole new opportunity to develop. Remember, we went through the same thing towards the end of eclair's life. Not a whole lot of development, and everyone really just waiting for froyo. The difference was, however, that everyone was itching SO BAD for froyo that a lot of projects were done on DK28; we were truly behind the times then, and so even the developers were willing to play with a leak. Not so much now; we're not AS behind the curve considering there are still few phones (besides newly released ones) on gingerbread. This, too, is much like the anticipation of an AOSP precedent as mentioned previously: it's quite possible that there are potential developers who are simply waiting for gingerbread to be released before coming to this phone.

I don't know, but the easiest explanations are:
More developers? Better chance to figure out the kernel drivers on their own.
It's made by HTC? It's pretty much a known that samsungs kernel drivers are always wacky, and in general, what one phone has doesn't neccessarily help with another. With HTC, their kernel drivers are a little more consistent across phones and it's easier to make things work by borrowing and tweaking.
Linux loaded modules? Don't know if it's relevant, but it's possible to use these to overclock a phone in a round-about way.
There's something that really needs to be laid to rest here regarding the arguement that everybody gives saying "we didn't get cm6 when froyo source was released, so how are we gonna get cm7 just because of gingerbread source?" Two reasons:
One: we only had one dev working on it, noobnl. Now we have a TEAM. And each on is just as if not more talented than him.
Two: we didn't have another device to kang any AOSP driver source from. With cm7, our team borrowed what they could from the nexus s 4g. And rest assured, they DID get a little use out of it.

then by the same logic, since the i9000 has gb, we should too? the only difference in the mytouch4g and most other htc phones is a keyboard and 4g. sound familiar?
