Apps not keeping state with multitasking - Kindle Fire General

Has anyone else noticed that the Kindle seems to have an extremely aggressive memory configuration? It seems to kill almost every app as soon as it goes into the background.
A simple Tapatalk --> home --> Tapatalk will reset the app.
I understand how to adjust the minfree settings. Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this and what they did about it without impacting functionality too bad. The unit only has 512M of RAM, but thats still twice what my first Android Phone had which was capable of keeping state on a few apps at once no problem.
Think this is just to keep the unit responsive? It seems to slow everything down pretty horribly (since not even Home will stay in memory).

[Q] Any workaround for heavy CPU use when waking up tablet?

This is a problem that has plagued every Android device I've owned. Whenever I turn the screen on to do something, the CPU usage shoots way up. These insundry background processes don't seem to be run using "nice" or "cpulimit," and so even with four cores on the Nexus 7, the GUI lags quite a bit. If there's any time apps should NOT run background processes, it's the moment that the user wakes up the device.
Has anyone addressed this problem on their tablet? Which system event would be relevant, if I wanted to use an app like "autostarts" to try and fix this?

Anyone having any Lag & Heat Issues???

Having Lag & Heat Issues???
Is anyone having lag issue or any heat issues? I guess I have one of the problem notes as mine has extreme lag and heat problems. I have cleared all caches and have also factory reset several times. What's weird is that the lag will come and go, but it's there more often than not. Even scrolling in settings has the jitters.
Any ideas anyone. I might be better off going through the miserable process of exchanging through the mail.
Thanks in advance for any help!
You'll have to boot to safe mode to see if the issue persists. Also, make sure power saving mode isn't on (I've left it on before).

I'm experiencing the same issues - overheating, slowing down, serious lag. It's simply terrible. I exchanged it and the new one is just as bad and maybe even worse.

My guess is it has to do with one or multiple of the apps you have installed. There is a 3 step process to fix this issue.
#1 - See if any of the apps you have installed are running rouge. Check, battery usage, RAM usage, and Data Usage to see if you have any bad apps. Uninstall any 3rd party apps that you installed that are running too much. They may just still need updated to be optimized for this new device. Also you can use the "sleep" (doze) feature in battery management to restrict apps that are running TOO much in the background. Also on any apps that are using too much data or RAM check the permissions. If an app does not need access to Data, Media etc to work properly turn off those permissions.
#2 Debloat the device. I like "Package Disabler Pro". Basically if it has Facebook, FB, or ATT in the name you should disable it. Also you can go through an disable any Samsung software you do not use as well. I would be careful about using the "disable all bloatware" button because it is not setup correctly for this new device yet.
#3 Give it some time. It you have a TON of media on a micro EXSD card then it can take a new phone a long time to index and create thumbnails for all of that information. It should speed up i about a day or so once it finishes indexing. this will also effect your battery life till it is completed.

Yeah it will break Samsung Pay though... I think it's related to the UIBCVirtualSiftkey app, but have not confirmed that. Also it does not get nearly all of the bloatware. There is a ton of new AT&T junk it does not disable as well as a bunch of new Facebook crap and Samsung crap.

Definitely. It gave me the perfect opportunity to try out the scroll capture. Let me know if you have any questions. This is what I have disabled so far without any issues. Once I get a full completed list I'll probably do a write up about how to clean up the dock ROM. I think I'm about 70% done with the list.
So far I'm getting about 6.5 hrs of SOT and about 28 his of usage.

I am not positive but I think it's the UIBCVirtualSoftkey if the doesn't fix it. Just enable all of the stuff you disabled and reboot. Then only disable what's on my list. I can confirm is working with my setup.
I'm exchanging mine tomorrow and was hoping for better news but from your experience it sounds like I may have to deal with an expensive piece of crap.

This phone lags a lot especially in Chrome and other scrolling apps.. sometimes switching between apps takes lot of time too...I have been using Samsung phones for quite sometime, but unfortunately this is the phone lagging more than any other phone for me..debloated almost 150 apps, still the same..and it gets hot as well when watching videos...none of this happened for me on Note 5...I think Samsung screwed with Note7 software..when they initially released Grace UX software for Note 5, it was very smooth...but the final Note7 software seems to be laggy...the same apps and setup on Note5 doesn't give me these issues....gonna return and try my luck with new one...but good thing is battery life has been very good for me...easily 5hrs SOT whereas on Note5, I used to get only 3.5 hrs

I am exactly facing this issue..I am a heavy XDA user, so I monitor all the apps on phone and debloated lot (around 150) apps...still the same.. thing is lag doesn't happen all the times..but it starts from no where..but the phone consistently gets hot while moderate usage

When the phone is working properly, bloatware should make no noticeable difference and debloating is unnecessary.
My Note 7 usually responds instantly, with no lag, no matter how heavily I'm using it. That's with nothing disabled or debloated. (I'm using the Google Now launcher but everything else is stock/default, with no esoteric apps or settings.)
However, on three occasions in the week I've had the phone, it's gotten into a mode with serious lag while typing. In this mode, even though the characters I type still show up on the screen instantly, I can type 3 or 4 characters with no sound feedback or vibration feedback; then, there will be 3 or 4 delayed clicks and vibrations in rapid succession.
When this serious-lag mode starts, it continues even if I close all apps and put the phone in Airplane mode. It also makes no difference if I turn on power-saving mode, or even maximum power-saving. The only thing I've found that fixes it (for a while) is rebooting.
The intermittent occurrence of the serious-lag problem shows that it's not a matter of the phone being underpowered or overloaded. There's some specific bug that needs to be fixed.
UPDATE: It just happened for a fourth time. And when the serious-lag mode starts, it's not just typing that has a delay with audio feedback. The feedback delay also occurs when I tap on icons, tap on the Back or Recent-apps soft-buttons, etc. There's a delay of up to a second or two between tapping and hearing the feedback.
On the other hand, compute-intensive tasks--such as playing streaming video--work properly even when the phone is in serious-lag mode. So that's further evidence that there is some specific bug, and not a general problem of being underpowered or overloaded.

Curious, do these typing lags occur on the hangouts app?!?! It seems to be the ONLY app on my Note 5 (and all the other phones I've used) that has a VERY NOTICEABLE KEYBOARD LAG, especially with Samsung Stock keyboard. This happens even with other keyboards, but is WORST with samsung keyboard.....

No, the problem I'm seeing is unrelated to any app or keyboard. When my phone is in serious-lag mode, the problem occurs across the board. When it's not in lag-mode (which it usually isn't), then there's no lag in any app, including Hangouts.

It happens even with all apps closed, no heat, no battery drain. It's not a side-effect of the phone being bogged down with anything.

Multitasking/RAM

You're busy and don't have time to wait, which is why you need to stop reading this thread and get back to organizing your Pogs. Rate this thread to express how the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite performs when multitasking. A higher rating indicates that the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite keeps many apps in memory so that they don't need to reload, and that when moving between apps, transitions are smooth and performance is excellent.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I noticed recently that I have very few apps open in recents. It seems to me like the phone is killing apps prematurely. Thankfully, app launch times are not that bad, so even with reloading it is not terrible.
Hello, I'm creating an account in order to give my real-life review of this phone. The previous phones I had were HTC One M8, LG G6.
Ram management in this phone is not the best in the world. I am not the kind of guy to tap of “clear all apps” all of the time. But if you keep an app open in the background and let it sit of half a day, it will have to reload.
While I pretty much never exceeds 3.5GB of ram usage, I wish apps could be kept open without reloading.
i have 4gb of ram its very smooth phone
I changed LMK profil in Kernel Auditor to Light and turned off adaptive LMK and changed to 0mb for foreground and visible applications and I can use full ram whitout app reloading, but the phone is still smooth and fast and stable.
I have a problem with multitasking.... Processes of all apps turns off right after leaving them. Tried everything, went through all battery settings, developer's settings and such. Tried every option. Multitasking is simply impossible on Mi A2 Lite (Pie 9.0). Apps turns off instantly after I leave them. Optimization for each app is turned off, Adaptable battery turned off, Battery saver turned off, also. Nothing helps; So sad, and it seems there is no solution for this.
EDIT:
It works, phone needs restart in order for settings to be applied.
So far no problems encountered in multi-tasking, on Android 9. Not rooted.
Has anybody found any fixes for this?

It is terrible.
I use the original ram and if I copy text paste it to other app then go back to copy another when I go to paste it's already lost the first before the reload.
For example I copy a bank account number, paste it go back and copy the name and after gone. Because of reload the account number disappears.
And this is just one example how annoying it is
It is pretty bad. Although, I feel that it had been better before certain security updates, but I couldn't remember specifically which ones. Right now, at August update, I've got all optimisations turned off, battery saver turned off, adaptive battery turned off, individual app optimisations are also turned off, in developer settings I've got standard limit of background processes, killing apps is turned off.. I really don't know what else one could turn off, in order to render multitasking operable. I'm on stock with unlocked bootloader. Any help would be massively appreciated, because I am really frustrated by having two out of four gigabytes of RAM which is always free and unused, but my apps are getting killed almost instantly after I've left them.
My multitasking is better since I have disabled Adaptive Battery.

Well, it should be, because, what this option does - it basically either kills all apps (if on) or lets them all work in background literally all the time (if off). That's why it's not really a good idea to keep it off because it will absolutely destroy your battery life.
I haven't updated since the October update and am not planning to - it is the last update that actually works properly regarding multitasking. All my optimisations are turned on and I reboot my phone every time after I've charged its battery - for some odd reason the multitasking works flawlessly after this.

Yes, if I do this even in November update, my multitasking is good. When I keep the phone on for a couple of days, it deteriorates. For a 3Gb phone, it makes no sense to have bad multitasking... Poor Android development I guess.

Thats what i am talking about on my Ram Leak thread. Thank you for your comment.
Multi-tasking used to be waaaaay better in Android 8.1, but with Pie update it's worsened. I remember being amazed by how many apps could be held open in the background back then. I have the 4/64 version.
I have the 4GB version and I do not really do multitasking (multiple open windows), just share to Telegram and copy-paste between applications. It is anything but snappy; sometimes it takes looong. It does not feel like 4GB memory.

Stabilizing Shield Tablet Smoothness

I may have discovered a way to make Shield Tablet very smooth and stable very consistently. I don't have the technical backing for it - im just a regular user doing trial and error. I hope it helps the others who want to keep this awesome Device live up to its potential...longer.
So here's my Device setup:
- Shield Tablet US-LTE
- using stock 5.4 debloated for K1 by Sh0X31 for K1 (yes, it works well with my us-lte as long as you don't care about system updates and stylus app)
- rooted via magisk
- Xposed framework
- Nova launcher
Using the ROM as it is significantly improved the performance of the device compared to stock 5.4 for US or RoW LTE. But the sluggish experience Everytime the device wakes up from deep slumber, or connects to WIFI for the first time, is still there. Using Antutu system monitor on the notification panel, I could correlate the sluggish performance with the CPU hitting above 94%. That happens 99% of the time so I suspected that most of the persistent sluggish performance is a CPU issue rather than a RAM issue. So I looked for a way to pinpoint which apps are hogging CPU operations, and hopefully discover what triggers it.
I tried enabling CPU usage in Developer's Options but alas, it could only show com.android.systemui so nothing much can be done from there. I understand this is a bug in Android 7 and it was supposed to be fixed on 7.1 but we all know Shield Tablet is stuck at 7.0 for now.
Next I tried checking out Running Services, still in Developer's Option. So I saw a lot of apps there that seem to be hogging CPU - Malwarebytes, ShareIt, Antutu, Google Services, etc. I uninstalled Malwarebytes and ShareIt but the CPU was still operating at 94% and it takes the device a few seconds to respond to my inputs.
Finally, I noticed these Nvidia-specific processes - these few KBs of operations particularly the ones for OTA upgrade and Media as well as Nvidia -customize (something like that). I forced them to stop and voila! My device CPU suddenly calmed somewhere between 30-50% and as expected, it's operating smoothly and snappily.
When I rebooted, those Nvidia processes naturally became active. I suspect that it's probably part of the device startup process. And as expected as well, whenever they're present the device is expected to go sluggish at some point before its CPU can calm down again.
So now, it's been 2 days and my CPU operates between 18-54% on normal operation, sometimes hitting 80% when I transfer files or play games. But it has NEVER gone sluggish, not even once (waking from deep slumber, connecting to WIFI, etc). I'm very satisfied and back to enjoying my Shield Tablet.
DISCLAIMER: I don't have proof that this is indeed the solution. I can't explain it technically as well. Hoping someone with more knowledge on system process can enlighten us. One thing I'm convinced though is that the sluggishness we all experience comes from NVIDIA-specific processes. I make this inference from my observation that having AOSP ROMs make the device smooth consistently. But I don't like any other custom ROMs coz I need the controller support for the tablet. I hope I make sense and hopefully this could help some Shield Tablet Fans. Sorry for the long write up.
Thanks for the post! If you want to try and dig deeper into this, consider using Tasker, I believe it can be used to make those force stops automatic on start up. Good luck!

Thanks for the TIP. I've checked it out in Google Play, the paid version listed what it can do. Need to study if it can disable those mentioned process at startup.
I really wished Nvidia would finally make it's firmware documentation open to the public.

Android 10 stable UI lag

Hi,
I've noticed a UI lag when switching between apps or transitioning from an open app to home screen. This didn't happen in the Android 10 beta rom. Anybody have the same issue? I clean flashed the stable android 10.
I can confirm this issue in the stable release. But I would like to add that this lag was already in the beta release and is in my testing not app specific. I would clear the cache and make a reboot.
Go into developer options and disable the three animation types. Everything runs MUCH faster with them off.

I have, and while it does suppress animations, it actually feels less polished. And anyway, it does not resolve the UI lag which is really visible when using th app switcher. It's dropping below like 10fps. As if some gfx acceleration was disabled or the phone was completely overwhelmed
Anyone found a fix? I experience the lag every once in a while, though it's prevalent enough to be annoying.
I am having this literally every time i use the alt-tab like feature. Oneplus managed to **** up the one thing (butter smooth) Google has been bragging about for several versions ???
A simple fix would be toh format device once, as I have clean flashed and I don't face any lags

Turn off auto brightness .. maybe it can help
I have been reading up on the A10 stable release posts and I saw a lot of people mentioning the issue that you are talking about here.
Many of them suggested a full format. So basically setting up your device as a new device.
I cannot confirm if this works for everyone but a lot of people are saying that after a fresh install they are not facing any issues.
All of the points mentioned above are just what I read from xda and op forum posts. I personally have not made the switch yet and probably wont be doing so soon.
Hey guys. I encountered the same problem on my Nokia 9. Not quite sure why this error doesn't get noticed by more people.
I think I fixed it for me though.
In my case it seemed that the OLED always on screen (which shows notifications and the time) was the problem in my case. It would always show that there are notifications even if there weren't any and that started adding up. So while the rest of my phone ran buttery smooth, the notification bar and lockscreen began looking like a Diashow. 2-5 fps sometimes. What I think is happening is that all these notifications are buggy and the always on screen can't get rid of them.
So my fix was turning that off and then restarting my phone. Since that everything runs smooth again.
If there is another thread I should post this to please tell me but I only found this one.
Hope it helped.

I think the issue is just : it's a ****show of awful coding, optimisation and non-existent testing. If manufacturers' programmers put in half the effort debugging their software we as "powerusers" at xda/reddit/... put twisting our brains in and out trying find correlating explanations and workarounds as to why we get UI lags or other absurd bugs (like 5GHz wifi not working anymore) on the 10th ****ing iteration of Android, we wouldn't have all of this. It all boils down to the general idea that because it is consumer grade product, quality check is just a non-subject. Apparent quality is just enough at product launch, and further updates (if they do get round to releasing them) can brake everything without manufacturers being held accountable.
The update showed up on my phone on the 25th, but, I'm NOT updating. 9 is too damn stable for me, & I don't see any "features" in 10 that will benefit me.
After reading all this i am not going to update to 10. Yet happy with 9.17.
Tmob unbranded dual sim op6t.
Narrowed down some parameters
I have the OnePlus 6, and have similar issues, that include swapping apps being slow, but not just the swapping of apps, any app that has typing in it, seems to DIE when I start typing. Maybe this is a google keyboard issue or something? I notice the issue most in the Microsoft Teams mobile app. It also tends to only happen when at least 2 apps are open, if it's on it's own, it seems to do fine.
This might just be coincidence but I went into dev settings and turned on "strict mode" and now I can't get it to lag like it previously did.
I just looked at my running services (dev options > running services) and saw that my Bluetooth was using 2.2GB of ram, and youtube was 1.7GB of that. I toggled bluetooth off, then back on and it reset this. I have not modified the strict mode setting above... still have not had any lag, will update this thread if I do get more lag.

Lagging issue I've seen many reporting in xda on the stock rom OOS 10.3.0. But 5GHz is working as expected. I can confirm it because I'm using 5GHz WiFI now and then

After a night/day of normal testing with this, where I would normally have issues, I have not had and of the lag I mentioned above. This seems to have fixed some things. So, I would suggest that you first check to see what running processes are using all the ram, and then turn on strict mode in dev settings, if that doesn't solve your issues. I also have Ram Boost option turned off.
I experience the FPS drop quite often after the update. It's especially noticable when scrolling pages, switching between apps, pulling down the upper panel. The slowness seems to disappear temporarily after closing all apps. But I can't say that some particular app causes the lag.
UPD: A simple test to recreate the problem. I push the square button to switch between apps. Start swiping finger left-right and watch the animation smoothness. After 5-10 seconds comes the wave of low FPS, which lasts for a couple of seconds. Then the process repeats. The slowness doesn't seem to depend on some exact apps that are open.
UPD2: Well, I've just found out that the problem isn't constant throughout the day. There must be some connection to applications running in the background or something like this.
