Voice call by using google voice - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Hi
Whenever i double tap the home button and want to call a contact, there are always multiple contacts that show for the same person. Yoy have to keep repeating the name until it finally calls. I have show only phone contacts to show and hiding sim ones. How can i avoid multiple contacts

Do the multiple contact entries have different phone numbers or are they the same? You can go into a contact and hold down on the number and make it the default if they have more than one. Also, it may be a good idea to clean up your contacts. I had to do this with my gf. It was a mess. She had stuff in her google account, on her sim card, and with facebook with various names. I put all her contacts on her google account and cleared out everything else. You are probably getting contacts stored on the phone and your google voice contacts showing up.

Hi
The contacts have the same number. I only have one contact and name but it always says multiple found. I'm guessing it's still seeing the sim contact as well. If i long press on a contact there is no option to make it default.

I think you are right. I would log on to google voice and check your contacts there and then delete them off the sim card. It's obsolete to have them on the sim card anyway because of it's limited storage and the cloud where you can have your contacts on all your devices. Plus if they're only on the sim and you lose it, they are gone.
BTW, the long press default option only shows up in a contact that has multiple numbers.

I think I have solved it. I deleted numbers from the sim card that was also present on the phone. I then exported all to SD card. I went to manage applications and the ontact storage and cleared phone storage for contacts. The only numbers that were left were around 5 on my sim. I then imported the vcf file from SD card. It then showed some duplicate numbers contacts that were not showing anywhere before !! I then deleted them and left only 1 of each. It now dials on first attempt and no more duplicate entries found

Does flashing a rom delete contacts?

I just order the vibrant and cant wait to root and flash a rom. If i flash rom, does it delete wipe everything on the phone? (contacts, setting, etc)
I flashed hundreds of times. Text message and phone record logs, yes. Names and numbers, no. Those are stored on the SIM card.
thank you... thats all i wanted to know
on simcard or your google account, depends where u have been creating/savimg them to
FYI anytime you save a contact i would recommend picking Google account instead of saving to the phone or the sim card. Anytime you log in with a phone that has Google support, all of your numbers should sync with it. (if you saved them to Google)
I didn't know people still saved contacts directly on the phone anymore. Why would you want to if saving them in a google account can have such info sync'ed to any phone automatically... especially on an Android handset. Even the crappy-ass iPhone has a method of doing this.

Google Contacts will not sync with Vibrant. Help...tried everything!

Hello, trying to help a friend who purchased an unlocked Vibrant, but is using his At&t sim card in the phone. He also believes the phone may be rooted.
Here is the problem, we double checked everything. Google syncs is turned on, all settings are correct. Auto sync of contacts is check marked. Yet, the phone will NOT sync his contacts from google into his vibrant. We also tried adding a new contact in the phone, and saving it to google contacts, which techinically should also now show the contact in the phone also, and it wont show up in the phone, but it does show up when you logg into google on the computer.
Anyone know whats going on? Thank you.
I would try a factory reset, if that doesn't work contact samsung for a warranty exchange. I can't think of anything else to try.
As far as I can tell, this is a real problem.
I posted this in the T-Mobile forum some time ago without resolution.
http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/Samsu...l-memory-not-syncing-UP-to-google/td-p/427413
For whatever reason, contacts in the internal memory or on the sim card, don't sync up to google. Contacts will sync down to the phone. As far as I can tell, there are three kinds of contacts: sim, phone, and google. None of these can mix or cross lines in anyway.
Its f'ed up, but you could take your sim card into the store, use another type of phone to sync from sim to google and then all your contacts would be there. Once they are there you are fine and should then save all contacts to google.
I am not sure why this issue hasn't gotten a lot of attention. Perhaps it is just on a view phones or just on a few networks. Not sure.
Sorry, just re-read your message.
Are you sure your display options are selected correctly? You have the option to show only show contacts with phone numbers, to show any or all of the three types.
That might be your problem. I have never had an issue with contacts in the cloud showing on my phone. Its really the other way around for me.

yes, when you go to google contacts through your computer and enter a new contact with a number, it should sync with the phone, but it doesn't
what could be wrong?
also how could he check to see if the phone is rooted or not?
^ download terminal emulator from the market and when you open it simply key "su" (no quotation marks). If you are rooted it will return a "#"... this is the absolute easiest method to determine if the phone is rooted.
Go to contacts and display options... uncheck everything but google and show ALL contacts (the check box above this), not just those with phone numbers.
Can he send an email from gmail and it show up pretty quickly on your gmail account? Has he actually logged into his google account on the phone?
Go to contacts and hit menu.
Hit "Display Options"
Make sure that "only contacts with phones" is not selected (just in case)
Also, make sure that "Google" is selected.
If it still doesn't show, go to the home screen, settings, and accounts and sync. Select your google account. When was the last time the contacts synced? If not recently, then select sync now and see if the number shows.
Hope that helps.
thank you, I will have him try this tonight when I chat with him

problem looking up contacts when composing new messages

I transfered all of my contacts from my iphone at a sprint store, but when i try searching for a contact when composing a new message, the phone cannot seem to recognize the contact name. This happens to the majority of my contacts, only a few actually work. Anyone know a fix or why this is happening?
thanks in advanced
**BAMMMPUU*
sounds like something got borked when transferring contacts. I would try linking the contacts with numbers in the Contacts app and then try it again and see if it works. Try a few, to see if its working. I manually enterred all of my contacts a while back when I switched from Pre to Hero to my google account (I know, there is an easier way, now). So I haven't had any contact issues.
It was happeneing to me too, but no port from iphone. Also when contacts would call it would only display there number even though the were already contacts with pictures.
I Just played with the contact settings and not sure how I fixeed it sorry.

[Q] Is it better to save contacts to phone or google?

Just wanted to know which was better and why. I have a samsung I9000
Thanks
well if you save to google, and then you get a new android phone your contacts are always there when you login to your google account from your phone. i always save to google
save it on google. If anything happens to your phone, you will not need to worry about losing your contacts. It'll always be there and it's easier to edit contact on Google anyways. This is also helpful if you switch roms a lot. You wont have to copy out your contact and copy it back in everytime.
With applications like Google Sync, I was able to take my contacts and import them into my old Blackberry. When switching to my Android phone the import of contacts was automagical.
Save it to Google, and then export from there into a csv file an additonal backup.
My only issue with saving to Google is you can't assign custom ringtones to non-phone based contacts =/
Anyone know if this is fixed in 2.2?
I've lost my iPhone couple weeks ago and thanks gods all my contacts were in clouds!

What do you want the ringtone for if it's not from a phone?
Another reason to like google vs phone ... It's damn convenient to add a contact on the web page as needed, especially if someone emails you the information and you can just copy&paste it.
I've used Google for mine ever since I bought the G1 when it came out. Come to think of it if I wouldn't have I'd probably not have all of my numbers.
Good stuff.
One question
I synced my contact to my Google account, and since it is syncing, if I accidentally deleted all my contact in the phone, it will probably delete the contact in my Google account too, right?
Or it can restore the backup?

Uh...I think the OP was referring to the difference between the Google contacts and the phone contacts. Meaning that you cannot set ringtones for Google (non-phone) contacts, not contacts without phone numbers.
Although, if there is one thing I really miss from when I initially switched from a Blackberry to the G1, two years ago, was being able to basically setup "filters" for incoming calls, emails and SMS, a customize how each filter was handled.

Depends on the definition of "deleted"...
I don't think it is even possible to accidentally delete all of your contacts. They could be erased by some external means or memory failure, but the sync algorithm does not see that as a delete. A delete is selecting a contact and selecting "delete contact" from the context menu.

Accidentally Delete means someone press delete all on the phone..
The sync will not remove contact from google if you delete from phone. As for ring tone, we'll just need some dev to port stock android contact over. In stock android contact you can set ring tone for individual contact without having the contact on the phone.

Sounds like google is the way to go but how do I get my numbers in "groups" if its linked to google, such as doctors, freinds, family, work? I see that the google ones are a group themselves

You can use backupify, com to backup your google contacts at certain intervals.
That's a nice option to have if you ever accidentally delete your contacts.
If you delete a google contact from your phone it WILL be deleted off of your account. It is a two way sync.

Not directly.
There is no way to sync a phone contact to your Google contacts. You will have to create a separate Google contact.
I think a previous commenter gave the best advice to just use a ROM that has the vanilla android contact app. I think the TWIZ hybrid ROM has the vanilla contacts app.
I have the same complaint. I trying to hold off until there is a vanilla FroYo before using a custom ROM.
Does this mean that none of you are saving your contacts to your sim card?

That's the least advanced way to save a contact because you can only have a name and number, that is all.
I use to save all contacts to sim with my old phones. As soon as I started using my google account I stopped saving to the sim. Mind you I've been with t-mobile for five years with the same sim.

[Q] cleaning contact list (Nubbie question)

I think this should be a simple fix, but I don't fully understand what I am seeing.
- When I look at my contact list, I see a single google icon on most. When I open those, they show as a joined contact with phone and google icons.
- Others show two or three google icons. When I open those, they show as a joined contact and a google icon.
Goal: I want to clean up my contacts list so I have a single copy of each entry that is synced to my google account. My google contacts are de-dupped and merged, so this is not a reflection of dups there AFAIK.
History: Initially I had most of my contacts in the phone. I went to the sprint store figuring this would be a simple queston for one of the Elves. 20 min later, I had 2-3 copies of every contact in my google account. In response to "where is the vcf file you just saved?" The elf told me, "There where no files on your phone and that there is nothing stored on my SD card." Anyway, the mess on google was corrected quickly from my computer. However I missed the oportunity to fix this mess when I recently flashed CleanGB and restored too much...
I have 2 questions:
1) What is the meaning of the multiple icons?
2) How do I just wipe the contacts on the phone and resync to google w/o wiping the google contacts?
Samsung Epic 4G, CleanGB 1.0
I had the same problem a while ago. I think I used the "contacts" section in gmail. That's where your phone syncs with. I found something in there that could delete duplicates or something. Or merge them? Sorry I'm not around a computer right now but that's the key. Hope it helps
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Login to your google account had the same problem a while back. Just go to google.com/voice and you can manage your contacts better
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
in contacts hit menu>settings> check display only contacts with phones?
Thanks to all who replied.
I ended up doing the following:
1) backed up google contacts (as csv from gmail.com)
2) broke syncing of phone contacts.
3) wiped all contacts
4) re-enabled syncing
Joy.
