I read somewhere that win 8 only supports landscape orientation on tablets. Is that true? I use my tablet in portrait orientation quite often.

At the moment it does only support landscape...
It also breaks accelerometers in current devices (EP121s for example).
I think landscape will be coming in future versions, but for moment it's not there.
I hope you are correct about portrait support. Without this support I am less interested in Win 8

I'm just not satisfied with the Tab's factory-shipped keyboard lauout, and I imagine that this being an android-based device, nothing is permanent.
Can we have a thread with user experiences and screen shots of alternative keyboards thay have been verified to work on both landscape and portrait for the Galaxy Tab? I have heard of one on here called "Gingerbread" but screen shots of that on a Tab both portrait and landscape ON A TAB would be helpful for everyone. And it would be nice to see more than just one option. Also, user experiences and opinion definitely encouraged!
Good idea! I'd also like to know if there are any keyboards that don't do the full-screen/extract thing in landscape mode. There's plenty of room to show both the keyboard and the UI on a tab (even more so with LCD Density Changer).
Smart Keyboard Pro has so many options for Landscape and Portrait mode it's ridiculous.....
Seriously, I'd have to take 200 screenshots to show them all.....
Give it a try and if you don't like it, you have 24 hours to uninstall and get a refund....
I am using SwiftKey and no problem.

My Smart Keyboard doesn't enable even after I select it in the Locale and Text setrings. ? ?
EDIT: I figured it out... but so far it's not all that better than the Samsung one. Honestly it will be the keyboard that will ultimately help me to decide if I return this device to AT&T or not.
Hi, does portrait mode sucks for you too, it is almost unusable. It takes a lot of time to rotate and swiping through homescreens is laggy as hell.
Of course I'm talking of honeycomb homescreen, inside apps is quite smoother.

Its an NVidia Tegra bug. They have promised to fix it soon.
Performance is affected everywhere when in landscape not only the launcher.
Hrm. I've had no issues with lag or performance in portrait mode, other than being annoyed when an app I open forces me into landscape. Maybe I just haven't looked at enough apps

How do they fix a bug in hardware?
I haven't noticed that. Perhaps because I almost always use it in landscape mode. But I can not say that it is "laggy as hell". It's quite smooth, I think.

Maybe it's nvidia tegra problem as mentioned above. But Asus see pad is good when potrait hold, but suck n laggy when landscape mode.

With updated firmware
Really it depends on whether it's an actual hardware issue or a driver problem. And even some hardware issues can be resolved with updates to the controller software.
If you rotate your tablet to landscape mode you will see that it is noticeably laggier than portrait, whether if its browsing the internet or homescreen. Is this gone in ICS or is it just a tegra 2 issue?
it was gone in ics =)

But see a post I just made. Autocorrect doesn't work in landscape mode using G+ until you flip the Xoom to portrait and back.
Strange...... I'm still on HC (tiamat) & mine lags in portrait mode...

Hi everyone,
I just preordered my nexus 7, but was wondering if out comes with Swype. I'm pretty sure it doesn't, but just wanted to check. If it isn't already there, can someone check to see if the free beta works?
I know the Toshiba excite 7.7 has Swype, so maybe out would be possible to rip it from there? I love this keyboard, looking for solutions, thanks

Did you try signing up for Swype Beta?

No swype beta preinstalled, but swype beta installed just fine... and is my preferred input method on this 7 inch form factor.

That's great. I used to have an Acer A100 and it didn't work with it, I'm guessing the resolution was incompatible.
Now we just have to figure out how to keep Swype on there after the beta days are over...
The beta now supports all resolutions. Using it right now on my Kindle Fire.

yes as pointed out before the new beta supports all screen sizes and resolutions....got it working on my hp touchpad before selling it, so swype just need to update their app to support jellybean
it worked good on kindle fire not the greatest but it worked. I just hope it works better on the nexus 7 then it did on the kindlefire

I agree. I get frustrated with it on the kf and often flext9 instead. But on my phone, Swype is awesome.
I may try the new monk keyboard as well...it is weird, but i think it will be lighting fast once you get over the learning curve.

What is this monk keyboard?
I'm guessing this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxU6Y4Vki78
holy cow though, that looks like a huge learning curve.
Swiftkey?
Just wondering if anyone had tried Swiftkey 3 on this device and if it works well/even supported? And also do you prefer it over Swype (I currently use this)

I have both keyboards, and much prefer Swype. I find it to be much faster since your not going key by key, but rather creating whole words. There is a slight learning curve for Swype, but as long as you give it a chance for a few days, you'd probably get used to it. The latest beta really makes it useable, although I only use Swype in portrait mode. Fyi - I have a hardware keyboard on my phone, so if I enter landscape mode, it's probably less work for me just to flip open the keypad and get my typing done. I tried Swyping in landscape mode yesterday and found it quite awkward, maybe I'm just not used to it.

Thanks for the reply! I will probably try Swype first because its input method is just amazing! But who knows how well it will work on a tablet.
Swift key and swype beta and thumb keyboard all are compatible and work great with the N7.
I change it up every so often, they are all good. Stock jelly keyboard is also real good too...

The million-dollar question is, does it recognize the tablet-ness and give you the resizeable keyboard button? Or does it give you the phone version?

If you are rooted and set dpi to 160 Swype will operate in resizable tablet mode otherwise it will be in phone mode
attached screenshot
ah so this won't work with the native dpi?

OK im sure this might be a dumb question....but I can't seem to View anything on my Nexus in landscape view...only portrait, anyone know how to adjust this?
If you pull the notification bar down there is a lock next to the date. You can also force it with an app like Rotation Locker from the market.

look up the one click rooting tool as it is the best way to do it. besides rooting your device it also installs cwm. with cwm you can flash roms and kernels to improve the look and performance of your N7.
quick boot is another excellent tool.
es file explorer is needed to edit the dpi on the N7. i prefer the dpi at 175 for a tablet ui on the N7. after you change the dpi go into settings and change text size to large and your good to go! happy rooting to you
cheers
Much of the Nexus 7 UI has been designed using portrait mode. With that being said, some apps will still rotate (if you have the rotation lock off which was already mentioned) but for the most part they intend you use portrait.

Although most of it works fine in landscape mode, I've used mine mostly locked in landscape mode since I got it without any issues.
The launcher is what is locked in portrait which screws everyone up. Try downloading a new launcher like Apex or Go Launcher. Most apps will rotate but a few will force themselves to portrait mode.
