My question is , how can I backup the contents out of the box to a .tar file that i can load up in the pda section of ODIN in the future if needed ?
The phone is baseband I9000UGJK4 kernel 2.6.32.9 and build froyo.ugjk4
I would like to have a permanent backup on hand of this before I change the os on it if I decide to do so or mess something up lol
So again , question is how can I back this up the the .tar file like we download from samsung for future flashing or restoring? Thanks guys
Strange that your phone came with JK4, since this version has been pulled from kies by Samsung.
I think you should upgrade to JL2
It came from futureshop just today , do you know how I can backup the contents to a .tar before I start changing things?
Update immediately to JL2. Don't load any other firmware until you have done so. This is important! Your likelihood of getting an internal SDACRD failure is very high until you do.
Important that if you use Odin, you select the flash boot loader option.
Strongly agreed. Use Kies (Samsung's official app) to FIRST do the upgrade. If anything happens during the upgrade, take it back immediately to the store for an immediate replacement (how long ago did you get the phone?).

I agree with gtg2, DvTonder and zorxd. Upgrade to JL2 with Kies A.S.A.P. JL2 can prevent the dreaded dead internal SD card issue so many people are having.
Install Kies, plug in the phone, and update the phone.
When Kies is downloading JL2, it will go into your temp directory. Copy it to a different directory. I did and I have the original JL2 on my computer for when I need it.
If you can't get it off your computer, you can download it from here.
Ian
OK done that last night , bought it 2 days ago. Updated through KIES last night so now that worry is over. I cannot find the temp folder you say I should have the downloaded firmware in though , nothing in c:/windows/temp or in kies folders
Here this is stock JL2 just flash it with odin in PDA.
JL2.
You can find odin instructions in Allgamers Thread here.
One thing you might want to consider is rooting your phone, if your on JL2 use Super One Click located Here. Another Method to get root access would be to flash Hardcore's kernel odin versions and installation instructions Here. Once Hardcore's Kernel is flashed then just boot into CWM (VOL UP+Home+Pwr) and find root in the menu. I recommend going the Hardcore Kernel method just cause from there you can go to Doc's/Darky's/Seearm's or another custom rom of your Choice.
Once rooted get Root Explorer or equivalent file explorer and make a backup copy of the EFS folder . Store it on your PC somewhere. If anything ever happens and you need to return the phone to bell just flash the JL2 I linked with odin and you will be back to stock.

It's too bad that we can't +1 up some responses to vote the best answer because this should be it.
OP: do this. If you're new to this, I can understand if this isn't very descriptive but he's linked you to all of the right info and those threads spell it out clearly.

why would you back up Jk4 it is broken version, I am surprised they Samsung still put it on the phone...please please upgrade to JL2 as soon as convenient and that backup
Now to answer your question, im not really sure if you can make a backup tar that you can flash later with odin. I think you're trying to do something like an iphone backup that saves everything, files and settings, even the background you had on your phone.
What i do is keep a copy of the stock firmware from samfirmware.com and then i make a backup using the app "titanium backup". You can find a free version and a paid version. Before i flash a new rom i backup everything and then copy the titanium backup folder from the internal sd to my computer, flash and then restore all user apps and settings. Flashing a new rom has never formatted my internal sd card so the folder is always there, i just copy it to my computer just incase. Ive been told not to do a restore of systems apps and settings on doc's rom though, not sure why. Maybe another user can clarify.
Lastly hold onto the receipt with your life because you will at some point in time end up with a dead sd card I recommend doing a stress test (does not void your warranty). Go to the thread here for stress test info.
Hi,
I got my phone abroad Galaxy S passport records, and I'm tired of you had your 3 months after using the version of Froyo MIUI I decided to install. I installed 3 days ago but I did not know what happened to the EFS. And now the phone's IMEI number 40000 0049990. .. this was not the original. phone line is running, but canceled. now what should I do to return the old IMEI number, or Waiting for your help Thank you in advance masters.
I have no idea what you're saying, but if you're having problems with your IMEI, then just search for "IMEI" and the first 5 or so articles might be what you're looking for.
this problem. MIUI for downloading the IMEI number has changed. What should I do now, and I have no idea
If you don't have a backup of the efs-folder you are screwed. Phone needs a new mainboard.

flash back to a stock firmware using ODIN, and you'll get the IMEI back
Download a firmware from samfirmware.com for your phone, flash it with odin, if it doesn't work with the firmware with 3 files (pda, modem and csc) try another with one file (like "JVH_JV3_JPO.tar") and your imei should be restored.
After, install root explorer and copy efs folder to sdcard and after on your computer. Keep it safe in case you will need it later.
Reflash an official froyo firmware using ODIN and you should be up and running, had the same problem when i tried MIUI a while back and thats how i got it sorted.
Hope it works out for you
flash to base
flash to base and after that flash to the new rom and look at the RE in the odin pro
It is possible to get the IMEI back? Super.

Restore IMEI with Backup
Hello I also have a problem with my IMEI. I flashed the latest miui version but backed up my efs folder like it was described by the miui-team.
Now I want to restore my old and original IMEI but don't know how to.
Hope you can help me and I know it must be really easy for you.
Greetings from Hamburg,GER

All I had to do was to copy the nv_data.bin and nv_data.bin.md5 files from the backup back to the /efs folder on the phone and reboot.

Hello,
i googled and searched for hours but can't find a solution for my problem. It looks like i lost my whole EFS Folder when i wanted to flash Galnet MIUI and after that CM7.1 because it failed.
So:
- CAN'T Flash ANY CWM zip (Status 7 error)
- CAN'T use mobile connection (No SMS,no Calls,no Internet etc.)
- NO Backup of the EFS folder ...
- Able to flash any ODIN/Heimdall ROM
- Up and Downgraded 100 times from FROYO to Gingerbread and so but still no EFS rapair :/
HELP,please ...
UPDATE: If anyone is wondering what i have done - i sent it to Samsung and they repaired it for free and even 4 months later it works like a charm (with ICS )
Flash any ROM using repartition. If that doesn't help, flash any modem / kernel after flashing ROM.
Already done that,no change...

if you don`t have a backup of your efs folder... your imei is lost forever.... you`ll have a service imei 0040etc .Efs folder will be automatically rebuilt but this will not get your imei back... i sent my phone to a Vodafone service for another problem and didn't canceled my warranty so its no problem
Nothing what you posted works. salesale's link was good, but i dont have a backup on my sdcard so its useless ...
I was NOT able to flash MIUI/CyanogenMod so i even dont have this backup ... and all my sdcard backups are only folders like DCIM/Music/Videos but not the whole sdcard. Before i tried to flash MIUI i backuped my whole sdcard but theres no efs folder there with a backup :/
I think i cant send my phone to samsung. they will cancel my warranty because i cant call and say my IMEI / efs folder was deleted without any reason. they know i have flashed and have fu**** up my phone.
Any other suggestions? :/ can someone send me his efs folder? Maybe the phone restores the imei when i follow the tutorial from salesale's link
Flash the latest official firmware for your country and Just go to the service center and tell them that your phone doesn't work after update with KIES.
That's all! You don't know why this happened
Since there is no need to open the phone, your IMEI needs only to be rewritten. If the service center's staff is OK, they will easily recreate your IMEI without much efforts.

Check user nokia8260's method in the link from salesale.
He does some edit on /efs/imei/mps_code.dat to match CSC.
Not sure if you need to flash a stock ROM + 512.pit + rooted kernel to establish a basic filesystem.

Just restore your phone to official firmware and call Samsung, tell them your phone doesn't recognize your similar card anymore and can't make or receive calls or text, thats what I did when i messed up my efs on my galaxy s 4g and i got it back within 2 weeks.

Flash the KB3 Radio because I have AT&T
If you don't have Root explorer Go into the web via wifi : 4shared.com
Download 'Root Explorer v.2.16"
Open it accept super user request
Go into EFS File And
Long Press/Move To Root Of SD the Following Files:
Nv.log
Nv_data.bin
Nv_data.bin.md5
Reboot phone and your Phone will be back to normal =]
Btw even if u move the files to Root Of SD ..once u reboot ull have them back in the EFS file and now in Root Of SD. But "REMEMBER" Flash KB3 Radio First! . Can't find it? go into Nexus S Development. .. scroll down til u see the Radio Thread
=]
Update: Just Noticed ur already on KB3 ... flash UCKD1 then follow the Steps.. then flash KB3 Again ^_^

Having a similar issue. I got stuck with a bootloop and even after flashing the latest stable clockwork recovery and CM7 release it still would not exit the boot loop. i wiped the cache/dalvik...still no bueno. i decided to wipe the entire device.
i was able to reinstall all my apps that i needed but the wifi status remains listed at "error".
i rebooted the phone, even tried the steps mentioned previously:
*backed up the efs_backup.bat / efs_backup.sh by running adb pull /efs
*using Root Explorer, i didn't have the "Nv.log" file in my /efs folder. I was able to move the Nv_data.bin & Nv_data.bin.md5 files to the /sdcard folder.

no it did not. i tried flashing the radio for my i9020xxjk8 from the xda site. it began to install but then it said installation aborted...there was no reason given as to why it did that. but my phone still works normally and the wifi is still not working
i woke up this morning and my phone was stuck in a boot loop. removed the battery 3 times with no success. i also tried a restore of the boot from a backup but it said it couldnt find the system.cache.img and failed. i then just booted it into recovery mode and installed the older OS version (2.3.6) and i was able to get back into the phone. however the phone is now seen as being unrooted so i have to re-root the device so i can properly run cm7.

im sending mine back to samsung for a repair.
Well, Hi!
A little history before the real problem.
My girlfriend bought a U8800-51 phone by my recommendations, because it's a great phone in this range of prices.
The phone had a problem. It reboot many times in a day (10~20 times) So I decided to upgrade the OS to GB with the gingermovida v1.1 ROM.
The phone stopped in the bootanimation secuence. I tried 5 times with the same result.
I downloaded the official 2.2.2 ROM from the Huawei website and put it in the SD card. I turned on the phone in download mode and started the install secuence. But stopped in the 2/2 step with the "Update Failed" message.
I tried to enter in recovery mode without success, with 5 different "recovery.img" files. In a thread in this forum somebody explained a method to back to stock froyo ROM using a .img file and the Roadkil's Disk Image tool, but with a AT&T img file.
My brother has the same phone so i made a backup of his phone and put it in my girlfriend phone. Everything works great! Boot OS and load all the information, 3G work and USB Mass storage work, so I did a wipe data - factory reset and everyrhing works again.
At this point I discovered that the IMEI is the same of my brother's phone. I tried many different tricks or tutorials (QPST, CDMA Tool, DFS, AT Command in Terminal, etc) and nothing changed. In the last try I upgraded the OS using CM7 movida v2 and 3G works, WiFi works, but I still have the same IMEI and a new problem came out. When I plug the USB cable and activate the Mass Storage Mode, only shows a Read Only CD drive with all SD Card files.
In the stock froyo ROM I went to the "Project Menu" and changed the USB options, but I can't remember in what option I leave it. In this ROM (CM7 movida v2) i can't go to this menu and check if I have the same Stock ROM configuration.
Besides, I didn't backed up my GF'S IMEI. So I don't know if it can be recovered.
She's gonna kill me, so I need a little help ASAP!
That's all. So here's the thing:
- I have the same IMEI of my brother's phone.
- Everything works except for the Read-Only Mass Storage Mode.
P.S: I don't know if the different driver that I installed affect something here.
Try to upgrade your phone, puting dload folder on sdcard, maybe it can fix your IMEI. About the mounting, I dont know what is happening, but maybe if you upgrade your OS, it will work fine..
What ROM can I use? The Official Huawei ROM (Movilnet U8800-51) didn't work (to solve the IMEI problem) If I try to downgrade using that ROM the phone stop in the 2 step and then I will need to do everything again.
What about B565? You can download it here: http://www.huaweidevice.com/cn/downloadCenter.do?method=toDownloadFile&flay=software&softid=NDEyMTU=
And I also found this topic, there is a user who says the solution so check it out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513439
Well, that ROM is for PRO version of the U8800 phone and I have the U8800-51 version. Baseband and other thing are different between versions. I will try the steps of your link when my girlfriend let me try again
Sorry, my mistake :/
I dont own a u8800 51 but the software isnt the same as u8800?
No, unfortunately, like I said: Baseband and other tiny thing are differents :crying:
-.-" Wait a bit, maybe someone will help you
Do you have any sort of backup from where you were when the phone worked correctly?
that's why I don't share backup. The fw on the -51 is tightly locked. I'm surprised they allowed pink screen. Your better off going for warranty. Unless, you can open the background password. I'll look for an alternative fix.
