Since I have got it (2 weeks ago) i have picked up my phone make a call, and on about 7-8 occasions, have noticed that the phone is turned off, and I can't get it to turn on. The only solution is to take out the battery and put it back in. Has anyone else experienced this. I have updated to JH2 firmware, but it still happens. I even got a new battery for the phone (Bell employee let me swap with another phone that was going back to samsung for gps issues), but the problem still happens once in awhile (like every 2 days, sometimes more sometimes less). Anyone have any ideas? thanks
More likely that it just "freezes" and you can't get it to react, then the solution is to take out and back in the battery - Sounds like a defective unit to me.
i think your phone was unable to wake? i have that problem previously where i can still call through my phone (using another phone) but there's no vibration / notifications of sorts.
i then realized i've been playing with SetCPU of late, long story short, i uninstalled the application, rebooted and all is fine since then.
good luck!
if it still persists, i'd do a reflash, wipe every bit of data available + formatting my SD cards. lol.

So..are you saying that the phone is actually still 'on'...just the screen is not turning on?
yeee sort of. lol. but why it's unable to answer, yet able to receive calls. i have no idea. same goes for any kind of notification that wakes your screen (SMS, calls, alarm, etc.)
Next time it happens, i'll try calling the phone to see what happens...I dont wanna return it because I have a 'rare' phone that seems to have good gps and can enter recovery mode.
you should check bell to see if there working and have recovery mode i got my just recently the newer shipments are hopefully all working with recovery mode and good gps
Did you install any Lockscreen app or something similar? I´ve read about another guy who had similar problems with a not waking up device. And it was a lockscreen app that caused this.
Yeah, I agree with everyone. I had SetCPU on my device and it would shut off a bunch of times per day. After I unintalled it everything worked fine. Another trick you can try is when the phone "freezes" try to hold down the home key. You sould still get the task manager box.
My first SGS did this a lot. My second and third SGS have not done this. Conclusion: faulty.
Yep...
I'm with mine for more than three weeks now, and I've never managed to cause it to freeze/shut down. although yours considerable rare, You'd rather have a working device I presume...

No, i haven't installed any apps like that. Like i said, GPS works 'ok' on this phone and it enters recovery mode. Thats why I would hope its a software thing and can be fixed. I will go back to get an exchange today ONLY if they let me try it out 1st (recovery mode).
I've had this happen twice, both times I was charging the phone with the screen locked and the cable was accidentally violently jerked out, after that my phone wouldn't turn back on without a battery pull. It has not happened of it's own accord though.
Hi Geeks,
I think, I am having a weird problem with my Nexus7. Its been third time in a row that device gets shut down completely and abruptly at 10% remaining battery without any warnings ( The last warning that pops up is at 15% and then nothing.
When I turn it on while plugging in charger, it powers up and shows charging at 10% but as soon as I open any app, screen goes crazy like an old CRT television screen when no signal reception. Extreme flickr that can't even see anything. Also, no touch is responded I guess or don't know what happened on touch action. Then it shuts down again :[email protected]
If I left it charging for some time. It starts working fine till it goes down to 10% again.
Has anyone experienced the same or any suggestions to check before I contact support also, if device is rooted, do we get any support at all or not?
Device is rooted and boot loader unlocked.
So, before returning to Google I would need to restore the factory image on it. Can anyone please share the procedure to do that?
Thanks in advance for the help and looking forward to hear from you soonest.
Use the nexus toolkit, get stock recovery if you're on cwm or twrp. Then go to settings, security, factory restore (something like that).

I jst opened mine today and it did the same thing. Mine is not rooted so it is not the cause. At 10% bad CRT reception. I tried resetting the unit several time and noticed too that when the change is higher than 10% it goes back to work. I don't want the hassle of sending it back. If it happens, who should I call and how to send it back

Unfortunately my friend, I have no good news for you too I had chat with the Google Play support and they asked me to do factory reset claiming 90% of the time the issue is resolved. I performed as they said and waited for battery to drain to 10% and as soon as it hit 10%, the device shut down itself and then bad CRT. I gave them a call and they simply asked to return it. They sent me couple of emails, one for replacement order and other for logistics like UPS shipping label.
They sent me a new unit in 3-4 days and I am yet to return the old one, making sure nothing is wrong with the new one too. Its working fine so I will ship the old one back.
I am afraid, you will have to send it back too The number to reach them is: +1-855-83-63987
Just got my Nexus 10. Nice device overall, but there is one problem. When I turn it off for more than few seconds, I cannot turn it back in. It shut down completely and does not react on short power button press. I have to long press, and even that does not work every time, I had to do that few time until it finally start loading. I tried factory reset, but it does not help.
Anyone else experiencing this problem?
After performing factory reset several times I come to conclusion that problems is in fact an unattended restart every time I press power button. Since it takes some time it looks like a refusal to turn on. Well, it's better but still hardly usable.
I definitely was expecting better product from Google.

This is obviously not working as intended. I would suggest contacting Play Store support and seeing about a RMA (they shouldn't have any problem with it for that situation)
Got RMA, hope the replacement will work...
Hi,
Does anyone else have the same problem I have?
If I leave the phone running on battery for a couple of hours it is sometime impossible to wake it up by pressing the power button. Also the LED flashes white (not red). In order to get it working again I have to hold the power button a couple of seconds causing it to reset.
This happens on stock 4.2.1 and also in CM (4.2.1 and 4.2.2).
Seems like a HW problem? Should I send it in for repair?

I've had this issue as well. It may be an issue with one of your downloaded apps. I have gone back to stock without any 3rd party apps and I haven't had the issue yet. Going to test a couple days and see what happens.
Edit: Maybe if you post some of your 3rd party apps you downloaded we can see if we have some in common.
Sure, here are some of my 3rd party apps
Moxier Mail
Eniro
Hitta
Wifi Analyzer
CPU Spy
Subnet calculator
Quadrant
Dropbox
Facebook
Whatsapp
Viber
Spotify
Shazam
MX Player
Truecaller
Llama
Android Lost
Out of those, Facebook and Android Lost are the only ones we had in common. I'll report back on this thread if this issue returns on my freshly flashed stock device without any 3rd party apps.
Similar problem here...

Similarly, on two occasions now, I've gone to bed with the N4 on the charger, only to find it completely shutdown in the morning, and the battery unchanged from where it was when I plugged it into the charger. It required holding the power button down for quite awhile before I got a response and the unit rebooted. The first time, I didn't bother doing anything at all, but this morning, when it happened again, I called N4 support. I was advised to do a factory reset, and monitor it. If it did it again, they'll do an RMA. It seemed they would have sent another one right then if that's what I wanted them to do, but I told them I'd try the factory reset. They also sent an email with a direct contact link to the agent I spoke with in the event I need to return it.
My Device:
Nexus 4 16GB
Android 4.2.1
Kernel 3.4.0-perf-ge039dcb
Not rooted
I'll also post if the factory reset works. I've also read online, that holding the Volume Down and Power Button both for about 10 seconds, disregarding anything that appears on your screen, will shut your device down. Restart and, at least for several posters, the problem disappeared. Just an FYI. I'll try it if the reset doesn't provide the cure.
No joy....

Following up on my post yesterday, a hard reset did not help anything. Neither did an update to 4.2.2 for that matter. I also tried holding the Volume Down and Power Button until it shut down, and while the problem hasn't re-occurred, I really haven't provided enough time to tell yet. So Google is sending me another one and issuing an RMA. In the interim, while I'm waiting for the new one to arrive, I'll follow up if the VolDown and Power button has done anything.
I'm having the same issue. I just woke up, phone had a flashing white LED and would not boot. A reboot was neccessary. Is this a hardware failure?
The last couple of days I have not had WLAN activated. So far it is running fine.
I will activate WLAN today to see if the problem reappears.

Why would you think there's a correlation between the two? I do have problems with wireless-notifications; for example, messages on whatsapp are often delayed, where I get a notification at say 11PM when the message was sent 10:45PM. Do you also experience this?
No problem noted this morning...

I don't know whether holding the Vol Down and Power Button resolved the issue, but at least it didn't happen last night whereas it has been failing nightly when on the charger. Unfortunately, I was just notified that my replacement has already shipped, or I would tell them to hold off a day or two. For those of you experiencing this, you might try holding the Vol Down and Power Button at the same time until the device shuts down ignoring anything on the screen. Then simply restarting. I'm not saying that mine is fixed, only that it had a good night and that was the only thing I've done.
I will post again up until I have sent this device back. I have 21 days in which to return it or my credit card will be charged for real.

Mine also failed while on the charger a few times, but it also happened when not charging, so.... I'll try your solution. Why not!
This just happened again this morning. My alarm failed to go off, but the phone LED was flashing white. I could not turn the screen on. I did install some 3rd party apps yesterday:
Facebook
Tasks Free
reddit sync
Ally
IMDb
Pandora
Twitter
I tried the Vol Down + Power and that didn't work for me. I think I am going to RMA the device.
Yea...I have a few apps on my device, but not the ones mentioned here. So I don't think that can cause it. Hoping for more responses! I subscribed to this thread now.
Does anyone know if there is a bug report for this issue?
Not sure, don't think so as I've googled this quite alot. I just saw my telephone, which was idle next to me for about an hour, reboot itself. I saw the google and then the nexus logo without me even touching it. No white flashing LED this time, allthough that also has happened to me. This is getting very annoying now...
Google Support's reply on this
I have seen this happen to my phone more than a few times. I can't make it happen consistently though. I contacted the support hoping for a RMA, and today I received this response from them.
"Thank you for contacting us about your Nexus 4 and providing those details for clarification. This issue could be possibly not be a problem, it is a feature as with any Jellybean OS device; and goes in to the sleep state after some hours of inactivity - such as the details your describe when left overnight. It can go in to a deep sleep, where holding the power button for 30 seconds or more is what wakes the device up."
So this is a *feature*? It seems puzzling to me. I don't know if receiving a call would wake it up (if not, it would definitely be a problem).
I also tried different roms, PA and Xylon, and stock 4.22 with different kernels ranging from Franco to Motley. It would still happen. Rarely but it's still there. Also I am trying to see if changning the minimum clock speed to 1024 would change anything. I will report back once I have more info.
Still working so far...
I've not had a problem with mine since the Vol Down and Power Button shutdown. It may not even be related and may have just "healed" itself, or the problem has simply become intermittent and hasn't repeated itself yet...dunno unfortunately. Since my replacement will be arriving today, I may never know since I'll be shipping this one back to them. I may wait until Monday to ship it though, and see if it acts up again and repost if it does or doesn't.
Hopefully the replacement won't have this problem at all!
locked up
I don't think the flashing white-LED is a signifier of a problem. I think it is a different status message, like email or facebook, or something. I haven't found that documented anywhere, but I've noticed it is blue sometimes and white other times. Without being locked up.
My phone will lock up while charging overnight. I have turned off Dream State and the LED notifier thinking it was related to these. It did seem to be somewhat better after that, but the last two nights have seen the phone locked up.
Also, holding down the power button for 30 seconds will hard power it off at 10 seconds, it seems to me. That is typically how I deal with this lock up! Hold down the power button 10 seconds, release, press it again and wait for it to boot.
This is frustrating. I was thinking of rooting the phone so I can use a logwatcher, but I'm not sure I will see anything in the logs after booting the fracking thing.
But.. while I consider that I will start by uninstalling Facebook, Dropbox, and Twitter apps, based on seeing them on other people's lists.
I'm going to RMA the phone. Just a question, what charger do you guys use? I've been using a samsung charger (from my Galaxy S2), perhaps that's related? As it does happen while charging mostly, allthough I saw the phone reboot itself out of nowhere without it being plugged in yesterday too.
I've only used the Nexus 4 charger on mine. No others. I'm on my new device now but haven't sent the other one back yet. Probably tomorrow.

I installed some camera apps one day on ZfMP. I usually keep it for charging overnight. To my surprise the phone had shut down by itself. I long pressed power button for some 20 seconds, it opened up. I ignored it as a sporadic issue. But I faced the same issue once again yesterday.
Custom care has only one troubleshoot for all issues, "reset the phone".
Disappointed. Does anybody know what exactly is the issue? Please help me fix it.

Ive faced this issue once in same conditions[overnight charger connected], and i too had to loooong pressed the power button for about 7-10 seconds to bring it back to life..
I would suggest to not connect the charger overnight.
I am thinking of alerting myself by way of a tasker profile, which i have already prepared.
Not many would like this solution, tasker being a paid application. But i purchased ages ago and there is no other software like that. And i recommend to have it purchased, and simplify your android life.
I can share the profile that i created, if anyone is interested.
Just install " Battery full notification "from play store and set is to a desired battery level.when the battery charge reached to the desired level the app will start a custom sound,so you will disconnect the charger.
It is a free app and i am using it since android Ginger bread days and my phones battery never damaged by unnecessary charging.
This is not a overcharging issue. Because only yesterday it got shut down at 84%. There seems to be some other bug related to this.
same problem i faced today at 65% of charge i keep my phone beside me and slept when i woke up it was off, I think this is not a charging issue its something else.
Random shutdowns
I'm having a similar issue too. Got the mobile a couple of days back and since it is still in the return period, I placed a replacement request.
After some digging, I realise it is rather common place with Asus smartphones to randomly shut down. Some say it is a battery calibration error. I've tried resetting the battery logs but the issue still persists.
I guess there's only two solutions as such-
1) Get it replaced by Flipkart. And yes, they do entertain return request even out of the ten day period.
2) Visit the service centre and get ready with a backup phone for a couple of weeks. I've visited the service centre and they seemed equally ignorant and dazzled.
PS- I did unlock the bootloader and rooted it. Installed viper, Greenify and YouTube red. I read that some of you had the issue after unlocking it too; That might be the culprit or it is just a manufacturing defect
i have not unlocked my phone and this was the first time i got this problem.
i kept the phone at night and didnt use it for 8hours the phone was on battery only.
morning when i checked the phone was off and i had to press the power button for 1 minute for it to start the battery was 75% so the battery didnt run to 0 and all.
can anyone on custom ROMs report back, if they face this issue or not? Just to know if its a stock ROM issue, or really a manufacturing defect.
It is definitely a manufacturing defect. It randomly switched off at first. Soon got worse and wasn't turning on at all.
I was on AOSP and returned to stock once the issue started. That didn't solve it even though I flashed the stock firmware via fastboot.
However, I tried keeping the phone on recovery and it didn't die then.

So how many users are facing this issue? Is this too random and only solution is to get the phone replaced? I like to buy this phone in next sale, but now got in two minds, as I definitely don't want a phone with known hardware/manufacturing defect...
Well, I went all out on the device the moment I got it. Maybe that's why the issues popped up the first day.
Flipkart offers you a 10 day replacement. So, whatever your pace maybe the 10 day replacement should be enough for you.
That said, the mobile is awesome.
ya even my phone just did this once
I bought this phone for my dad on Father's day as his secondary device. He left the phone charging, then after about an hour came to me and said its not turning on, I tried everything, including trying to charge it. I ended upholding the power button long enough for it to start. I can return it to flipkart till 26th. What should I do? And if I'm to return it, which phone should I buy then.
my observation having these phone for 2 days
for the first day, i use it without any problem from 100 percent until run out of the juice. BUT, that time i havent insert my sim card which i only use WIFI to connect to internet. the battery are pretty impressive. In fact, i also updated to the newest software.
ON the next day, i inserted my sim card and use mobile data as internet sources. THEN, the phone started to unresponding whenever i left or away from it more than 5 minutes which i need to force restart and also happened during charging time. i left it about 5 minutes and the same problem happen.
When i eject those sim card, and charge it back, the phone are completely fine. All seems ok.
SO, MY ANSWER OF THESE ISSUE ARE BECAUSE OF SIM CARD RELATED, NETWORK, 4G, VOLTLTE, MOBILE DATA.... ETC.
HOPE THESE REPLY REALLY HELPFUL FOR THOSE WHO CAN SOLVE THESE ISSUE. I AM A FANS OF ASUS PRODUCT AND HOPE CAN USE THIS GREAT PRODUCTS. THE SPECS ARE VERY GOOD AND THE BEST SMARTPHONE I EVER USED IN MY LIFE.
ASUS THE BEST.
I was planning to buy this phone, but this problem is appearing like a deal breaker. Can someone provide me an opinion on whether to buy this or not?
Does the problem happen consistently right from the day you bought it?
(If so, I think the best thing you can do is to buy it, see if the problem happens, return to flipkart if problem happens.)

asus zenfone max pro ( new)-auto-shut down, not charging/getting on
Hello friends,
my new asus zenfone max pro (less than 1-month-old) was working fine till yesterday, and almost full charged.. but its showing no charging and not on... could it be same problem as discussed in this thread?
It was not shut down, but i think its auto shut down
I for sure know - the phone has been taken care off, and no fall or nothing.
Please help.
Thanks in advance,
Sunshine
I too was astonished to see that the Zenfone max pro m1 was dead after putting it for overnight charging when it was 38% and since the phone did not turn on in the early morning, by long press of "on" button, "fingerprint and on" together also did not turn on, connected to computer via USB, that too could not put it on. I removed SIMs and put into another phone and left for office. Then contacted the service centre, who welcomed for service. Surprisingly, when I returned home after work and tried fingerprint and on button together, it started booting. Then charge was 86%. How can we rely on the phone?
