I think your phone use an old Eclair version of android : 2.1 Eclair 2.59 with Blur
So the first is to make an official uptade of your phone. For that go here
http://direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/support/update/
Choose your country, your phone and follow the steps to upgrade.
After that your phone will run an official version of Froyo.
Read this for next steps... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982
and enjoy ;-)
If I don't see my country in the list (Israel) what should i pick (I need RTL support) ?
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/16cf0578c0
So if you don't have official update for your country, I don't know wich one you should pick. Sorry

"CG Versions
With that explained let’s get to business with versions:
CG Version 2: SBF 2.21 / 2.34 / Chinese (Éclair) (Defy)
CG Version 3: SBF 2.51 (Éclair) (Defy)
CG Version 4: SBF 3.4.2 (Froyo) (Defy)
CG Version 5: SBF 4.5.0 / 4.5.1 (Gingerbread) (Defy)
CG Version 6: SBF 4.5.1 (Gingerbread, 2.3.6, (Red lens Defy/Defy+) )
If you try to flash a lower ID version than the one already on your phone, you will just get a Black screen after booting or a screen telling you to flash an official rom.
So, with this in mind, you can now hop between Android versions without screwing up your phone.
If you have an Éclair Defy and would like to keep the ability to downgrade to it, you should ONLY install FIXED SBFs of the Android Version you want to install, and then use the corresponding Nandroid Backup for that Fixed SBF."
Your CG version is : 3 and I think that all the current version of customize rom use at least a Froyo kernel...

So i need to find an official upgrade for my phone (to froyo) before i can do anything ?
because my country doesn't have an upgrade and i even tried Arab-english and it doesn't have an upgrade for my phone, what should i do ?
Thanks.
(Merci )
If you need RTL support, I think yes. Froyo Hebrew or Arabic rom.
Maybe, there is an another way with a Nandroid and a fixed Sbf... But I'm not experimented enough to give you more advices on that. Sorry
I think you are on Éclair.
If you want to keep your warranty, first make a Nandroid backup of your phone, then install only Nandroid + Fixed SBFs.
Im not sure if all the custom roms will work with an Éclair base, but some of them should

unfortunately i don't think so. once you go up on cg version, you can't go back down.
also you need to flash a froyo rom first. as far as i know all the popular custom roms like cm7 and miui requires froyo. eclair won't do.
a nice rom with rtl support? well i don't really know what's a rtl support, but i know of a very nice rom, wajkiui, that has a rtl fix add-on for the arabic users. see here for wajkiui rom, and the rtl fix addon in the second post:

2.List of ROMs for the Defy

Hi All
I am newbie here. Having a Motorola Defy ( Bayer module ). Want to update the Froyo 2.2.2 to GB. I read lots of articles on this site & watched videos. Found a video on youtube flashing defy with MS2Ginger. Link is as below :
youtube.com/watch?v=veF5u-BOTJo&feature=related
( Please add www as this doesn't allow me to add )
Just wondering if someone could tell me if this is safe method to flash my mobile ( in case if something goes wrong or I don't like the ROM, I could go back to my Froyo ). In the video person has used fixed sbf . Please suggest, can I use this method to flash ?
Secondly, which ROM will be better : CM 7.1.0 or MS2ginger ?
( In India , lots of call drops n data problems kind of things I have read on this site ) But I want a fast and hassle free ROM. Please suggest if any other good ROM is there , particularly suitable to Indian conditions.
Sorry for my poor English . But please support.
Thanks
Tarun
For upgrading using sbf, follow this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537
Check the version you want to upgrade. I have defy+, with 2.3.4. I flashed mine to 2.3.6 in 15 minutes.
Download the motorola driver ,RSD Lite, and the stock sbf which your model supports.
Shutdown defy. Press Vol Up + Power, connect usb. run rsd lite to install the sbf. It simply flashes the phone to the new version.
Or you can use recovery (Vol Down + Power ) then Press Volume up. Here you can flash using recovery any CM7 based roms.
Which ROM is good enough
Thanks ksrgroup, but any suggestion for ROM, like almost every ROM has some problem. I was planning to choose one CM 7.1.0 & MS2ginger ? .. Any idea..
Also, flashing full sbf I guess my downgradability will be lost.
Can someone clear this concept under what circumstances my downgradability is lost ?
Pls help
Pls help
Did anybody check the youtube link i gave ? Can someone tell me if its the method which keeps the downgradability ?
Please support..
Also, suggest a good ROM too..!!
Hi,
Your current rom is froyo 2.2.2 version. If you want save your downgradability DON'T FLASH a FULL GB SBF. You can flash all the CM7 (froyo original kernel) and MS2ginger (Nandroid + fixed SBF) roms without problem and all the NANDROID of GB version made by walter79. But don't forgot to made a nandroid backup of your rom before and try to find the full sbf of your current rom if you need to go back stock (warranty).
About the rom CM7 vs MS2ginger :
This roms are very different so try them to make your own opinion. My favorite is CM7 (more closed to AOSP rom) but it's really a personal choice and these 2 roms are pretty good.

Call drops with MS2Ginger : Pls help
Hi all
Finally after reading lots of details I updated my Defy with MS2ginger 2.1 ( GB 2.3.4) .. .. But I am facing 2 probs :
1) Call drops : many times my fone gets disconnected . I tried ITfunz baseband switcher, but couldn't find the one for India. Then in this case which should be used. Secondly what is the method to find currently which band I am using.
2) There is an app " Accu weather " . I don't want to use this app. it eats a lot of RAM . Any method to uninstall it from my Defy.
Please help frenz..!! ...
To check the band you use : Settings / Wireless and networks / Mobile networks.
For save/recover/delete apps : Titanium backup on the Market
but how to stop call drops ..???

You don't need a specific baseband for India, use anything that says 900/2100MHz because that is the frequency that mobile service is provided here. (900/2100MHz in Hong Kong = 900/2100MHz in India or anywhere else in the world)

If you mean system app, you can remove it using Titanium Backup. Or just freeze it if you have TiBkup Pro...
Or if you want, you can delete it from /system/app using some root explorer like ES File Explorer with root permissions

Tarun, I tried almost all the available ROMS for defy, and i would suggest cm7 or ms2g. If you have titanium backup pro, then you can freeze otherwise take backup and uninstall. For speed improvements you can overclock and remove the moto bloat ware. If you have root explorer you can simply edit system/bootmenu/config/overclock.cnf file otherwise boot into boot-menu, then cpu-settings and change the clock and vsel values to your likings and save (dont forget) and reboot.
You can use LG camera for video bit rate changing, i use 720p with 13-20mbit/sec rate and quality is very good.
The battery consumption in standby is vry low for ms2g till all the roms i used. during night where in unused timings for every 3+ hours 1% consume which is too good. For CM7 based roms it was 35-40min whic too bad for me. wait for a day/two till your battery stabilizes.

I couldn't find a link so I'm asking can you even downgrade
yes i could man but i deleted the files from a fault and i need only the nandroid i used to do one method i found but nandroid link is not working
can anyone help me
AFAIK, the nandroid is gone with sopa. I´ve tried to make a new nandroid of the cee, but it does not works.
The only way i know, to solve your problem is to flash a full sbf from the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1486731&highlight=bl6+downgrade
wheter BL5 or BL6, it makes no difference your warranty is lost, cause normal defys have BL4.
Read altough this thread:

Depending on your kernel try to install these chinese ROM that can downgrade your ROM from whatever kernel you are having now and after that root device install 2init and after you can install whatever ROM you want....I used CyanogenMOD
