My call reception with the 8525 is easily (and by far) the worst I have ever had with any phone.
Is this typical? And/or are there any fixes? My reception is often poor and often yo-yo's up and down, with lots of dropped calls.
I'm using the default ROM, with radio 1.16.00.00 (yes I'm a newbie, and yes I've been reading the wiki, etc, and alas I'm still not comfortable figuring out which bootloader, SPL, etc etc I have). I do NOT use any of the data functions, so if another radio ROM is the answer, my only criteria is call reception.
Almost wondering if it could be loose hardware?
Thanks for any ideas.

Install Hard SPL V5.
Flash radio 1.27 or higher.
I personally use 1.38.30.10 and switched to that from 1.34.00.10
The instructions are in the appropriate thread for Hard SPL, and also in the Wiki.
Remember that any flashing has the potential to ruin your device, Hard SPL makes it so that the device can be recovered in most cases.
Any of the 1.27 or higher radios should fix or greatly improve your reception issues.
Also keep in mind that HardSPL will flash quickly (less than a minute or two) but the radio takes the longest of any component to flash (10 to 20 minutes). I recommend when starting a radio flash that you disable all power management and screensaver on your computer that you are flashing from, establish your activesync connection and then run the radio upgrade ruu. Once that is done leave the room and don't come back for 30 minutes. This will prevent you from tinkering while the flash is taking place.
As said above flash HardSPLv5 FIRST
and then flash a newer radio, the latest PROVEN radio is 1.38.00.10. A few people have reported battery drain issues with the later iMate radio so i still recommend the radio in the guide.
How to flash HardSPL v5
How to flash radio 1.38.00.10
These guides make it look easy but if you havent read through the wiki please do so since it contains BUCKETLOADS of info.
Thanks to both of you for the pointers.
I have read the HardSPL page and downloaded HardSPL and the .net framework.
Looking at the install snapshots, my 1st hitch was wondering what SPL I had (since it looks like you need to pick a version during the install).. but I was able to decode that by going to the settings->device info->ROM version, and then indexing down this table http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Upgrades to determine that with ROM 1.34.502.1, I should have SPL 1.06 (is there any way to determine this more directly?)
I've grabbed 1.38.00.10 and will give this all a go when I get to work in the AM (and have plenty of time to babysit) (also I figure allowing another 18 hours for other suggestions/cautions to float in isn't the worst of ideas )
Will report back when complete. Thanks again for the info.
Mike
If you READ THE GUIDE it goes through the procedure of finding your SPL and what options to select. Please read it word for word.

Like you, I am a newbie, new 8525, read the wiki and forums for days before taking the plunge. I flashed hard SPL and Radio ROM 1.38. The reception improvement is dramatic and my battery life is dramatically improved. Someone earlier used the word "sip" to describe the minimal power this Radio ROM uses and that is true. I actually wondered on the first day of use if the battery meter was working.
If you follow the upgrade guide to the letter, you should have no problem flashing your device but you must read the guide. I know the experts have told you this but wanted to let you know that a newbie can actually do this successfully.
status on how well the radio works

James, HOw long ago did you do this? how long has it been working for you? Just curious. I have had a horrible time with reception and i have tried several of the 'upgrades' but have never touched the radio. So far, not much improvement...so i am curious abot the radio rom upgrade.

My god please try upgrading the radio right now, generally the radio is responsble for any battery drain issues people are having.
Follow my guides, first make sure you have HardSPL on the device and then flash a newer radio.
See how it goes?
I will I will
MrVanx,
I am trying now. But i am trying to read everything first and your message said upgrade to hardsplv5 and your guide has v6 attached. was there a reason you said v5 instead of v6...i am not having battery drain issues at all, i am only having dropped calls. Thanks for your wisdom. I will wait for your reply on v5 vs v6 and then will flash the radio to 1.38.

mrvanx, i am following the guide, but i have a file called ruu wrapper instead of romupgrade.exe. when i try to run this file it fails to execute and gives a windows error. i had .net framework 3.0 running and i have since uninstalled it, but i am still unable to run the ruuwrapper file to upgrade the hardsplv6. any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'd like to go back and ask about hardware again.. I've installed the new radio, and my reception still bounces around like a yoyo. Start a call with 5 bars, then 10 seconds later down to 0 and drop the call. I'm frankly more comfortable opening up and soldering itty bitty pins on chips vs. my knowledge of the ROM upgrades (so far) anyway.
Thanks for any leads,
Mike

You're not in one of those areas that has both 2g and 3g coverage are you? If so limit phone to 2g only, otherwise Hermes goes crazy by automatically trying to swap between the two and will drop calls in the process.

Yes, worth a try at least. Hermes tries to go for strongest signal. However even within one room that can switch about from 2 to 3g. I may be wrong but I believe danielhererro's bandswitch application could make things easier here. Has a nice interface to make it easy to switch bands etc.
Well worth posting back to let us know how things go - even if it's not good news!!
Mike
Very much another question of ignorance, but might be too basic for the XDA wiki, yet mildly too in depth for Wikipedia...
I do apparently have both GSM and WCDMA in my area (I had previously associated 2G and 3G only with data connections, not voice, so tonite has been educational for me) (it also didn't help that Cingular hides the 'Band' menu from users, so I had no control, nor awareness, before using the registry tweak)
With the Hermes, with both GSM and WCDMA available, is there an obvious preference for me? Or is it a tradeoff of power vs. quality? Or just dumb luck of whichever coverage happens to be better in the exact spot I happen to be?
Thanks,
Mike
I can't say my reception is improved, but I do seem to be dropping fewer calls now....
Mike
Still poor reception
I have a newer 8525 latest rom and 1.40.30.00 raido rom, and it still gets poor reception, I have tried my sim card in a 8125 and V3 and get exelent coverage in the same spot... its always egde if that helps..
anyone have any ideas? If I can't figure it out i'm gonna have to sell it and go back to an 8125..
Thanks

Hi all,
just tried out the 1.54.07 radio which i think is the most current, but i noticed that the 1.50.00 that was workign really well for me is even better than the newest one. I get 2 bars in my basement where i used to get nothing, and the 1.54 gives me one bar spotty. I am interested in going back to the 1.50.00
would I just install the 1.50 radio the same way i always do and not worry about the fact that it is going down? or is there a process to remove the 1.54? haven't been able to find anything searching
also, more of a curious note than anything, all of the radio updates that i've done take only a few minutes, usually less than 5. this one (1.54.07) took the full 25 minutes. made me nervous. anyone know why this may be? oh well again thats more curiousity i can live without knowing
thanks for the help guys

As for the first question, just flash 1.50 right over it. No needs to worry. The downgrading issues only effected downgrades across radio BL versions (which are at MUCH lower revision numbers than 1.50, so nothing to worry about).
Regarding the flash time, I wonder what the nbh file you flashed looked like. The full 25 minutes sounds like a full ROM flash. What RUU did you use? I am not sure why it would have taken so long. Sorry.

that radio doesn't use the custom RUUWrapper, when I upgraded to 1.54, it took awhile, I was ****ting my pants alittle too. 1.54 didn't work for me either so just downgraded back to 1.50..no probs.

Hi,
I've got a telstra T9193 and using the recomended energy radio 2.07.50.27_2 from:
http://www.energyroms.com/PostGraphics/Leo/Leo_RADIO_2.07.50.27_2.rar
Energy.Leo.23563.Sense2.5.Cookie.HomeTab.Apr.23 is currently running.
I'm experiencing quick battery drainage with push activated, data always on.
The phone freezes, and have to remove the back cover to reset quite often. Screen freezes with backlight on, no buttons work.
The phone freezes just by browsing xda with IE. This is pretty frustrating when you'd think a simple train ride to or from work with browsing IE would just work. 45 minutes of browsing forums on the train will waste 20% of the battery [half of the browsing includes waiting for proper reception].
I don't have crap installed, and most apps are installed on storage card.
Cleanram and cleantemp don't seem to help with reducing suprising freezes.
CHT contact links on home screen ramdomly doesn't load/show contact pics when loading. Every reboot a different contact pic is hidden. Manila reset resolves it sometimes.
Arkswitch displays an error before manila loads so i've got it working as an app, and not from top taskbar.
I was thinking of maxsense but it looks ugly compared to CHT.

re telstra T9193 and radio
Hi there,
I am using T9193 in Sydney as well.
Actually, I have found that the 2.07.50.27_2 is the best radio so far. I have tried 2.08.50.08,2.08.50.05, 2.09, 2.10, and 2.11 as well. 2.07 give me the best reception/ battery and the sound is more natural compared to 2.11, which sounds like a robot with echo sometime.
I am using 19Jun10 energy rom, downloading 22Jun10 right now. From the update log, it seemed that 22Jun10 is a good bulid and with alot of people already tested and reported it's a good one.
So, a few check points to try to solve your myths.
1. Have you changed setting for auto backlight level? This eat up battery.
2. Have you applied 2100/850MHz fix? this is important if you're with telstra next G network.
3. err... that's all I can think of, but i would suggest you to stay with 2.07.
good luck mate!
hmm....
im on vodafone 900/2100..
backlight is on 65%. might try 22June =/ cbf recustomising to my liking..
I dn't think there alot of vodafone hd2 users in australia.. If there is give us some feedback on data speeds aswel.

I am on Vodafone and I use Dutty's HG with 2.10.50.26 radio and I have excellent data speeds and fairly good battery life. I am on a corporate plan for work and I have no problems. The latest radio 2.12xxx seems to give me poor battery life and 2.11xx is not too bad - but 2.10.50.26 seems best at the moment.

Radio - 2.08.50.05
I have flashed quite a number of ROMS. This one uses a bit of juice but I find is quick and stable. I have had no issues with it whatsoever. It does not freeze.
I would consider:
1. Flashing Task 29
2. Flash either a fresh download of ENERGY CHT or consider flashing EVOLUTION.
Good luck

yeah i'd like to know about this fix as well......not that i have any problems with energy rom and radio 2.12!
is there a cab that us telstra customers need to apply?
Here is the Telstra band cab.
Also, you'll find battery usage depends a LOT on your location...ie how good a signal you get. 2 people on the same ROM/radio can have very different results. If you are on the edge of a 3G network where the reception comesd and goes, you'll have higher battery usage as the phone keeps searching for a signal.
I'm on Telstra, and with my ROM I get several days usage.
If you're having freezing/other issues, I'd suggest you post in NRG's thread to request help.
I have also got this phone and am wih vodafone in melbourne and am using the 2.14.50.04 radio and this gives the best battery life so far, usually for 10 hours of standby I only loose 4%. I tried 2.15.50.14 the other day but the battery life isn't as good as 2.14. Thought I might mention this incase those people in Aus want to be kept up to date with their radio.

Hi, i know this is old, but its relevant.
Your issue is a faulty motherboard. Get it replaced under warranty. But do not send it to the Telstra Repair Centre, because they dont test it long enough to see the fault. Try Fonebiz in your state! Trust me, mine 2 HD2s went to Telstra Repair Centre twice and came back saying no fault found.
then within 10mins of leaving the store it would lock up.

I had the same problem, couldn't even charge the phone while backlight was on without it overheating.
Decided to avoid the run around and flashed a radio I knew would brick my phone. Then played stupid (I'm good at that).
After upgrading to ROM 3.14.531.1 my wifi connection disconnects frequently.
Anyone have this problem or know of updated wireless drivers?
I am having the exact same problem.
I used to get connection to the router throughout my house and now it is spotty at best with the new update.
I also noticed that my range is cut by 1/4 and signal strength is very sporadic

I haven't (I have not even installed HPSL), but here is the rub...my phone signal seems better...my connection to the router is worse!
Not sure if that is an equal trade-off or not (also not sure if I am accurate on the phone signal though)...(what's my name again?_)

I am seriously debating this.
The WIFI is ridiculous now.
The device does seem smoother though and battery life is greatly increased. Where I would usually be around 30% in the day I am at 50%!
Maybe I should just install an earlier radio, but I am nervous about doing that!
Battery life question
Fit those reporting implement in battery life, do you all keep all your radios on (bluetooth, wifi and 3g) all the time? I generally keep bluetooth off because it haas been giving me an additional half day of usage and, staying with this, I am not seeing any improvements in battery life. if anything, my battery life may actually be slightly worse with the new ROM.
I do have direct push email set to deliver instantaneously.
Also, with regards wifi, not seeing a signal issue but wifi drops after some period of inactivity. This was not the case with the previous radio. Like others, I am also very interested to see if anyone has rolled back to the previous radio with favorable results .

HardSPL3 and flashing the radio is so simple. I promise... Don't go back to 2.13, just HSPL and flash a radio. There is a thread in rom development that has all of the TMOUS radios... Just flash the radio back to 2.10.50.26. That's the stock radio from 2.13 Rom. If you want to private message me, I'd be glad to give you the step by step, but I learned what I know from reading threads on this site.

I do think the 2.15 radio is setup to disable your data if you are using wifi, and maybe as you suggested, turn off wifi if it's been idle for a while. Probably a way to save battery life... I had switched to the 2.10.50.26 radio that comes with the 2.13 ROM because the battery life wasn't great with the 2.15 Radio, but then I had also noticed before I flashed back to 2.10 Radio that I was getting full Edge at my buddy's house, where I normally have no signal at all. I decided to switch back to 2.15 radio and test the theory that the battery life gets better as the Rom "settles"... I'm not totally buying it because logically it doesn't make sense to me, but I'll try anything. That's how you learn stuff.
Thanks for the informative post, crisisinthecity! Keep its posted on erhart you find.
I have tried to adjust the power savings in advanced settings hoping that more power would keep the signal from disconnecting and give me better signal strength. Did not seem to have any effect
Hey guys.
I've got exactly same problem with the new ROM here in Holland. I am not T-mobile user.
I've posted my message on forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8709630&posted=1#post8709630 but apparently nobody had similar issue there.
I've also contacted HTC support. Of course they started from giving me instructions how to setup WiFi. Finally after several iterations they realized what problem is about. Just today I had long conversation with them and they said that this issue is happened with only me but "they really want to understand the issue and try to help".
They were suggesting me to install the new ROM again and try to test in on different WiFi network - apparently they reluctant to do it themselves properly. I said I don't wan't do it as I don't wan't to waste my time on that and I want them figure it out themselves iby having more complains about new ROM.
I've bought theory that the issue is in radio and tried to install new ROM on top of old ROM with SSPL_RUU. It worked but even with old radio+new ROM ("only flash Splashe and OS image") WiFi issue was not fixed.
I am not going to do any experiments with my device until I will be sure the issue is completely resolved. Very disappointed indeed. Very happy with old good ROM 1.66.
I was having this problem until a few minutes ago since I flashed the 3.14 rom. When I flashed the ROm from january 25 ... UK ... It's the 1.66 ... the issue with my HD2 stopped ... just finsihing the setup of my phone again ... and the wifi is working perfectly.
I was just about to adopt the first procedures to send my the goddam hd2 to
fix by htc, when i decided to do this test.
man, I can't wait to get rid of this phone

Odd...I have been having the same issue and in contacting T-mo and HTC they both admit that this is a known issue and that they are working on it (no mention of whetehr or not they will release a new ROM to address and I doubt that they will).
yep, been having the same issue with 3.14 ROM, WiFi disconnects frequently.
this is not seen in previous versions of ROM. must be a botched job from HTC on the WiFi drivers.
this problem only happens with certain WiFi Access Points. So not everyone will experience this problem. that's why a lot of people can't relate to what we are experiencing.
Damn HTC.
I'm pretty sure this is not a problem of Radio, but rather the WiFi drivers in the ROM.
Hello,
My friends complain about my call quality. They tell me that my voice repetitively gets extremely silent, so inaudible they often ask back so I need to repeat myself multiple times which is weird and aggravating at some point.
I have an EU HD2 with radio 2.15.50.14 and Rafdroid HD 4.0.2 NAND + data2sd. I had this problem back while I was still using wm65 Energy ROMs or my own custom built wm65 ROM, so I'm 99% sure it's unrelated to the operating system.
BTW I'm on T-Mobile Hungary. Gonna try my phone with Vodafone too, just to narrow things down.
Oh, and no, I'm NOT covering the microphone with my hand. I always hold my phone in my right hand when calling.
Anyone else had a problem like this?
Thanks,
Jay
Bumpity bump?
If you had the issue with the Energy ROM and your current ROM plus you have the most current radio version installed it my just be a issue of bad service in your area. You could try down grading your radio starting with the radio under the one you have and systematicly work your way down from there with the radio versions to see if you can find one that works better in your area. Go to the HTC HD2 Master Radio Thread to get the radios.

Thanks for the tip! Will try that.
I have exactly the same issue on my HD2.
Radio 2.07.50.27_2
Energy ROM: Energy.Leo.29007.Sense2.5.Cookie.2.0.Dec.27
I think for me this is a hardware problem, but it occurs very randomly and usually sound is ok again after some seconds.
JayMore, did you find a solution?
I have had this problem for quite a while also on older Energy ROM (same radio), but I never called very much. Now it is getting worse or I make too much long calls and I'm ready to RMA.
Try using a different microSD card, since I've switched, nobody mentioned this problem. Sounds stupid enough to actually do the trick...
Help!!!
My HTC HD2 is giving me problems....everytime I receive a call the caller gets a echo of his/her voice.....is there anything I can do to fix that????
Same problem here.
Usually when people phone me. If I phone back it seems OK.
Gonna try and rollback to an earlier radio to see if that works.
