My call reception with the 8525 is easily (and by far) the worst I have ever had with any phone.
Is this typical? And/or are there any fixes? My reception is often poor and often yo-yo's up and down, with lots of dropped calls.
I'm using the default ROM, with radio 1.16.00.00 (yes I'm a newbie, and yes I've been reading the wiki, etc, and alas I'm still not comfortable figuring out which bootloader, SPL, etc etc I have). I do NOT use any of the data functions, so if another radio ROM is the answer, my only criteria is call reception.
Almost wondering if it could be loose hardware?
Thanks for any ideas.

Install Hard SPL V5.
Flash radio 1.27 or higher.
I personally use 1.38.30.10 and switched to that from 1.34.00.10
The instructions are in the appropriate thread for Hard SPL, and also in the Wiki.
Remember that any flashing has the potential to ruin your device, Hard SPL makes it so that the device can be recovered in most cases.
Any of the 1.27 or higher radios should fix or greatly improve your reception issues.
Also keep in mind that HardSPL will flash quickly (less than a minute or two) but the radio takes the longest of any component to flash (10 to 20 minutes). I recommend when starting a radio flash that you disable all power management and screensaver on your computer that you are flashing from, establish your activesync connection and then run the radio upgrade ruu. Once that is done leave the room and don't come back for 30 minutes. This will prevent you from tinkering while the flash is taking place.
As said above flash HardSPLv5 FIRST
and then flash a newer radio, the latest PROVEN radio is 1.38.00.10. A few people have reported battery drain issues with the later iMate radio so i still recommend the radio in the guide.
How to flash HardSPL v5
How to flash radio 1.38.00.10
These guides make it look easy but if you havent read through the wiki please do so since it contains BUCKETLOADS of info.
Thanks to both of you for the pointers.
I have read the HardSPL page and downloaded HardSPL and the .net framework.
Looking at the install snapshots, my 1st hitch was wondering what SPL I had (since it looks like you need to pick a version during the install).. but I was able to decode that by going to the settings->device info->ROM version, and then indexing down this table http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_Upgrades to determine that with ROM 1.34.502.1, I should have SPL 1.06 (is there any way to determine this more directly?)
I've grabbed 1.38.00.10 and will give this all a go when I get to work in the AM (and have plenty of time to babysit) (also I figure allowing another 18 hours for other suggestions/cautions to float in isn't the worst of ideas )
Will report back when complete. Thanks again for the info.
Mike
If you READ THE GUIDE it goes through the procedure of finding your SPL and what options to select. Please read it word for word.

Like you, I am a newbie, new 8525, read the wiki and forums for days before taking the plunge. I flashed hard SPL and Radio ROM 1.38. The reception improvement is dramatic and my battery life is dramatically improved. Someone earlier used the word "sip" to describe the minimal power this Radio ROM uses and that is true. I actually wondered on the first day of use if the battery meter was working.
If you follow the upgrade guide to the letter, you should have no problem flashing your device but you must read the guide. I know the experts have told you this but wanted to let you know that a newbie can actually do this successfully.
status on how well the radio works
--I flashed hard SPL and Radio ROM 1.38. The reception improvement is dramatic and my battery life is dramatically improved. Someone earlier used the word "sip" to describe the minimal power this Radio ROM uses and that is true.--
James, HOw long ago did you do this? how long has it been working for you? Just curious. I have had a horrible time with reception and i have tried several of the 'upgrades' but have never touched the radio. So far, not much improvement...so i am curious abot the radio rom upgrade.

My god please try upgrading the radio right now, generally the radio is responsble for any battery drain issues people are having.
Follow my guides, first make sure you have HardSPL on the device and then flash a newer radio.
See how it goes?
I will I will
MrVanx,
I am trying now. But i am trying to read everything first and your message said upgrade to hardsplv5 and your guide has v6 attached. was there a reason you said v5 instead of v6...i am not having battery drain issues at all, i am only having dropped calls. Thanks for your wisdom. I will wait for your reply on v5 vs v6 and then will flash the radio to 1.38.

the post said v5 because i wrote that before v6 was released
The guide is updated for v6, please use that.
DISREGARD...I GOT IT
mrvanx, i am following the guide, but i have a file called ruu wrapper instead of romupgrade.exe. when i try to run this file it fails to execute and gives a windows error. i had .net framework 3.0 running and i have since uninstalled it, but i am still unable to run the ruuwrapper file to upgrade the hardsplv6. any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'd like to go back and ask about hardware again.. I've installed the new radio, and my reception still bounces around like a yoyo. Start a call with 5 bars, then 10 seconds later down to 0 and drop the call. I'm frankly more comfortable opening up and soldering itty bitty pins on chips vs. my knowledge of the ROM upgrades (so far) anyway.
Thanks for any leads,
Mike

You're not in one of those areas that has both 2g and 3g coverage are you? If so limit phone to 2g only, otherwise Hermes goes crazy by automatically trying to swap between the two and will drop calls in the process.

Yes, worth a try at least. Hermes tries to go for strongest signal. However even within one room that can switch about from 2 to 3g. I may be wrong but I believe danielhererro's bandswitch application could make things easier here. Has a nice interface to make it easy to switch bands etc.
Well worth posting back to let us know how things go - even if it's not good news!!
Mike
Very much another question of ignorance, but might be too basic for the XDA wiki, yet mildly too in depth for Wikipedia...
I do apparently have both GSM and WCDMA in my area (I had previously associated 2G and 3G only with data connections, not voice, so tonite has been educational for me) (it also didn't help that Cingular hides the 'Band' menu from users, so I had no control, nor awareness, before using the registry tweak)
With the Hermes, with both GSM and WCDMA available, is there an obvious preference for me? Or is it a tradeoff of power vs. quality? Or just dumb luck of whichever coverage happens to be better in the exact spot I happen to be?
Thanks,
Mike
I can't say my reception is improved, but I do seem to be dropping fewer calls now....
Mike
Still poor reception
I have a newer 8525 latest rom and 1.40.30.00 raido rom, and it still gets poor reception, I have tried my sim card in a 8125 and V3 and get exelent coverage in the same spot... its always egde if that helps..
anyone have any ideas? If I can't figure it out i'm gonna have to sell it and go back to an 8125..
Thanks

Hey guys,
When i take the train my phone has no reception.
but when i get out of the station and wait, My phone gets full bars.
but i can't call anyone. It keeps saying "call failed, try your call again later."
my service doesn't show up, but the bars are full.
does anyone know why my machine is doing this?
thanks!
can somone please help me out. ny phone is pissing me off! I would stand one place waiting for it to search for signal but it never connects! I even have full bars!
my only way to solve this is to reset my phone!
I have full bars but it keeps searching. and no matter where I go I won't connect.
sometimes I have to keep hammering the send button to make a call.
can someone please help me out.
thanks in advance.
try put d sim card in other mobile to see if is from sim card or mobile...
it's most likely due to your radio rom. i use to have problems like this in the past. have weak signal around work. when i leave work, even though i get my bars back, it would take a while to actually be able to make a call.
recommendation 1) upgrade the radio rom on your phone. most people recommend 2.19, but i think that's what i use to have when i had weaker signal. signal would pick up and allow me to make calls considerable quicker in 2.25.11 and higher.
recommendation 2) in comm manager turn your phone off and then back on, when you get the signal back, you should be able to make a call.
When i turn on my phone the radio says 2.25. so am i using the wrong version?
I don't get it.
thanks
If you've upgraded to any version of windows mobile 6 then 2.25 is almost definitely your problem. Try using 2.19 or 2.69 as they seem to be the only ones that don't experience this problem. There are people working on a fix for the rest of them, but I'm not sure that they have finished the fix yet and the last time I read their posts the fix may only work on cingular or at&t when they do get it working.
Thanks, But im using WM5 with T-mo
sorry i left this info out.
so which version should i use?

Then it should be pretty much fair game for whatever version you like. 2.69 is still the newest and seem to work pretty well. I have heard of pretty good results with the 2.4 something or other version as well but I would probably go with 2.69 myself.
Thanks,
is the faria 02.69.11.rar the correct one?
thanks
Yes, that one works very well, and the one that avatar28 was mentioning (the 2.4 something) is 2.47. I actually like that one better than 2.69 but it doesen't like to work with WM6.

LOL. Yeah, that one. Sorry, I'm a bit short on sleep at the moment and my brain's a touch fuzzy plus I've been away for awhile.
That's ok, just thought I'd help you out there a little. 2.47 is a really good radio version. I wish I could still use it because I got better reception and better recovery time from that one than every other one I've tried and I've tried them all. 2.69 comes in a close 2nd though.
(solution at the bottom of this post)
Hey, ive searched for a little while now and i havnt found a solution, so if i missed it im sorry just point me in the rigth direction. In the mean time, here is my issue:
Its the same issue with:
4.5
4.9
5.0
(these are the only onces ive used)
all downloaded from:
http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/
now ive wiped before flashing each update, and even wiped after the update, ive even gone back to rc29 and then trying again
when i get the phone to finish booting up, my radio gives me issues, it will show full bars, then none, then full, then none, never showing edge, so i go into wireless settings and realize that every 20 seconds or so, airplain mode is coming on for a half a second then going back off, without me clicking it, but when it does this, it never shows the airplane icon where it does if i click it myself in the top status bar
now if i manage to dial out a call at the right time, it will keep the full bars, and dial out properly, i can have a half hour phone call or longer without a problem, when i hang up, i have full bars AND edge for atleast a hour or so, and then i drop edge all of the suddon and go back into the airplane loop, inwhich a simple phone call (even to voicemail) fixes it temporarily
this issue happens as soon as i reboot the phone as well, as it starts up, it shows no connection, then emergency calls only, then tmobile, and repeats
when under mobile settings when trying to select a network manually if im lucky for it to show tmobile and at&t, 90% of the time it tells me it cant connect to tmobile due to my sim. if i keep clicking it it will say registering to network, but it will stay in the loop with the airplane mode flickering on and off
again, if this is something stupid im missing, or if its been explained elsewhere, my bad just point me in the right direction, but either im not searching for the right thing or ive just completely missed it, either way, someone help me before i have to go back to JF 1.42, im really enjoying this magic port
Ok, so thanks to the suggestion to "update the radio" and Google for pointing me in the right direction. I did as follows, and so far, so good.
Download this file to SD card
http://sapphire-port-dream.googlecode.com/files/Saphire-Radio-Update (rc33).zip
Saphire-Radio-Update (rc33).zip Sapphire Radio 2.22.19.23
Rename it update.zip
Reboot Phone in Recovery
(I wiped, this may not be needed, but I did anyway)
Alt + S to install the update
the phone will ask you to do the home + back to reboot, press it and it will do a few other things, including reboot into a screen with a arror pointing at a microchip, then it will reboot back into recovery
hit the home + back yet again to perform another reboot and it will boot up normally and so far, ive yet to have an issue with my radio after this
wootroot-
THANK GOD I AM NOT ALONE!!!!
This problem has been plaguing me as well with all of these new builds!!!
Ultimately I ended up going back to JF 1.42 MOD because I needed a working phone.
I flashed to 5.0G tonight... and its doing the same thing... radio on then radio off. I tried flashing to the new Sapphire radio... nothing works.
I would love for someone to come up with a working solution.
Thanks!

i feel the same way, i thought it was just me
there has to be something im missing, so many other people use these builds without issues like this, there is no way someone could put up with this issue and use the phone as a daily phone reliably
if you want to have 5.0 (well i flashed H not G but im sure it would work regardless) time a phone call to your voicemail when your radio flashes on and when it vibrates saying the call connected, hangup, and everything will be fine for a few hours
do me a favor though, read over the stuff i just added to my first post, see if your phone is doing anything different than mine, that way when someone who comes in here and is able to help, they know exactly what our phones are doing, and hopefully its not just us with this issue and it will get others in the trend of explaining in detail what is wrong with theres, maybe this will help speed up getting a solution lol (wishful thinking?)
I am redoing things once again.... reflash, etc.
Keeping my fingers crossed.
But it's late and I am tired and annoyed.
If it happens again... I will try to make a video of whats happening so others can actually see it.
I thought I was going crazy I'm on 5.0G now the new one which adds busybox but I've been having the same exact problem as the OP but I haven't tried the Sapphire Radio yet but we all seem to experience different issues anyway.

no fun, sorry your having issues too, you say we are having different issues, could that be because we are using the HTC code and your using the GOOGLE code? or did i misunderstand you?
can you explain a little more about the sapphire radio vs other radios? ive been trying to understand what the difference is, and how to switch between them, but so far im unable to find a clear answer, so can you tell me the difference and how to switch between them?
thanks for your help
EDIT:
oh and what do you use busybox on the g1 for? i just read up on it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BusyBox) and i have a general idea of what it is now, but whats the use of it on the g1? do you use it as kind of a DOS for the g1? is it more for developers than end users?

How do I restore my phone to original so I can start over? I am getting horrible battery life now with this new radio version and I have tried multiple roms. I made a nandroid backup when I first rooted my phone I just need a little bit of info on how to restore this version and will this version send my radio back to normal? I am not sure that is the problem but it started about the time I did the flash to the new version and I would really just like to kinda "start over" to get rid of any issues my flashing all these different roms may have caused. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

welcome to xda. there is a search thread button on the top right of the forum it will find all the keywords you type so that should help you. always search in the forum before starting a new thread so we can keep clutter down. anyways the radio isnt messed with by alot of things because it is very risky and it is also in a whole different partition so a nandroid will not restore it.

I didn't try looking around on the forum for the way to flash it back. I have become very proficient in messing with my phone so I am not worried about bricking it, but thank you very much for your help.

It isnt working though since the flash a week or so ago I have been getting terrible battery life and I cant figure out what is wrong... I have wiped, tried about 4 different roms and nothing changes the battery still drains like crazy. I also tried a rom with like no programs running and made sure that I had nothing running that could possibly kill the battery.
I tried that one as well... Still says the same thing, this is really odd, I really think this is causing my battery issues. I flashed both that one and the one on the main page, do you think possibly that the problem is related to this. The only radio update I ever flashed besides this downgrade was the one that Flipz posted to go with his Android 2.1 rom... This is really weird I am really getting worried that I am gonna be stuck on this radio version forever now =(

Do you have Spare Parts installed. You should be able to get info from there. Do you have GPS, Wireless, or Bluetooth on? I have the updated Radio and while I am sleeping I am only using 9% of my battery. With my stock ROM I was using 35% I have everything off except mobile networks and when I go to sleep I turn that off. I do not over-Widget my homescreens or have email checked every 5 minutes.
Maybe try Damage Control V1 or Fresh Rom 2.0. I know DCv1 is great as long as you follow soome of the steps on remving one of the applications.

Nothing conclusive in any of these threads, and I am beginning to worry...id really like my old radio back.
It's an issue with the new radio. Your phone is constantly looking for a GSM signal, preventing the radio from sleeping. Either need to flash the old radio, or upgrade to a 2.1 ROM and follow my guide.
Well, I am on Fresh 2.0c now and my battery life seems better. It was literally going down like 10% or so per hour before, it is back to normal now like normal for 2.1 roms. I reinstalled the radio a few times and I read in other threads that even though the versions wasnt changing in settings it was really changing. So I think it is fixed now but I still got my fingers crossed.
Even if your battery life is better now, you still need to follow the guide to change the Preferred Network to CDMA auto (PRL) otherwise your phone will still be wasting a good amount of battery searching for a GSM signal... I'm on Fresh 2.0c with the new radio and I'm only seeing like a 20% battery drop over 7 hours with normal usage.
Hey all,
I've been running XBmod/Yuki's WP7 Rom for a few months now, and I love almost everything about it. One big problem though: the baked-in radio is terrible for my area. I'm on usually a couple bars of edge at most in places where I used to have full bars of 3G. I'm now in the middle of updating to Mango (finally), and while that was going on I figured I would look around and see if I could flash a different radio like I used to do with DFT's rom. So far, I'm just confused... I'm seeing that you can use a couple different radios but only software radios or something. I'm really not sure what exactly that means, but I'm assuming it would be bad to try to flash 2.15.50.14 like before.
Is there a different WP7 rom I can flash to use this radio? I'm really tired of having next to no service all the time...

This is probably service in your area cause mine works fine, and if you want try the 2.12 radio, people have luck with that.

Here's a great post about how the radios work:

I really suggest you to upgrade all the way to mango and checking to see what kind of reception you have before flashing any different types of radio.
