I'd like to find out about this too. Brand new Kindle Fire owner, so I'm still searching for information.

Hey Everyone,
I apologise if this is in the wrong forum (not sure if it should be in Android Development), and before I start I want to make it clear that I DID use the search function, I searched for "Can't Enable USB Mass Storage" and "No option to mount SD Card" with no relevant results.
Rom: JFv1.51 CRB43-EU
Ok, I was using my phone fine I managed to sync around 12GB worth of music and transfer a few files last night (I flashed the ROM around 20:00 GMT after trying out several hero builds).
This morning I mounted the SD Card to my laptop (OS is Windows 7 RC1) and transferred a few APK's. Suddenly as I was in the market the phone comes up with "Checking SD Card for Errors" and had for some reason unmounted itself from the PC.
Now when I plug in the USB cable all I get is the light to indicate it's charging. There's no option to mount the SD Card. I've tried it on my Laptop, My Vista Desktop AND My Xbox 360 (usually there's a mount option when you connect to that which allows the xbox to see music on the phone).
Strangest thing is the MicroSD Card seems fine, I am able to play my music and see the 2 pictures I have stored on it. Another site suggested using Anycut to make a shortcut to SD CArd and then ticking Enable USB Mass Storage. This doesn't work either, I get a ! in a triangle in the status bar saying USB Mass Storage Enabled but neither my laptop or my desktop will pick it up.
Any Suggestions?
Thanks,
Steve.

Yep, Should it be?
Yes it should be. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers (USB mass storage devices)
Edit: Double pOst
hi, i recently bought this tablet. the usb (full size port) used to mount usb drives, sd cards in cameras etc and the files could be seen on the device. of late, it seems the port does not mount any device, but provides power to it(thumb drive light flashes, phone charges). the file manager( file manager hd) shows "directory empty" when i connect a usb drive and choose it. please provide me with a solution. i tried rooting and un rooting the device but the problem presists. i tried enabling and disabling usb debugging but got no results. please help.
Try grabbing USB Mount All from the market. That should fix your issues.
Chlballi
Try using "USB Mount All v.1.3" available on the Marketplace. However your device will lneed to be rooted to use it.
may i know as to what is a usb mount? the iconia a500 already has a full size usb port.
got it, trying it out now.
thanks a lot. working like a charm
sorry double post.
seems I have the same problem.
My acer wont recognise any of my drives but it will power them.
I've tried usb mount all but it doesn't help.
I'm running the virtuous 1.4rom
Any help appreciated.
does anyone know a way to view the /data/app as mass storage under windows explorer?
By default, when you connect your phone as mass storage it displays /mnt/sdcard...
i tried mounting /data/app to /mnt/sdcard/data-app but that made mass storage unusable until i rebooted the phone
also making a soft-link using "ln" didn't work out...
Not sure of how to do it with windows explorer, but adb can let you see everything and copy things off of it, although a teensy bit more complicated.
Here is the basic tutorial.
If your interested i can give you some useful basic commands that ive picked up. Youtube also helps alot with this.
I would like to mount the internal and external storage via 'USB MOUNT' like what I normally use on Galaxy based phones, I tried checking the debugging mode and it still launches the MTP application, is there a way around this ?
I'd like to know this too!
AFAIK mtp is the new way to connect for honeycomb, ics onwards.
google moved away from usb mounting after 2.3

In short, no.
That's interesting because the new ICS-equipped Coby 9742 mounts as a regular, removable drive rather than a MTP device. That, and when the Samsung 10.1 and 8.9 were released without microsdhc provisions I was dumbfounded, a certain dealbreaker. Two disturbing trends:
1) MTP
2) no microSDHC/XC
My HTC Sensation running an ICS rom, also still has the standard USB mass storage mode too. It may be something a Rom developer can add as part of their Rom.
[Q] External USB drives (HDD/SSD) and mounting
How does the SATV decide what directory it will mount an external USB drive to?
/mnt/media_rw/usbdrive
/mnt/media_rw/usbdrive2
/mnt/media_rw/usbdrive3
I keep noticing mine will change from one to another each time I reboot. This is really messing with Foldermount. Does it matter what other devices are plugged in? How can I force it to a certain one? I am rooted so if this can be done from terminal, I assume it's *NIX like, I'm all ears
thanks
Mine is mounting the same every time. Make sure you are connecting to the usb port every time obviously.
I personally use stickmount to mount inside the sdcard directly.
In my situation I have a SSD in an external USB 3.0 chassis that is always plugged in, same port. I just allow the OS itself to perform the mounting and have never had an issue where it didn't mount, it just intermittently changes the mount location it is using.
The big problem here is when it switches it screws up any app that previously had the drive noted at the last known mount folder. Foldermount being the main app but others like emulators lose the last folder used too.
Is the mounting process on an Android device similar to Linux? Will I find some config file that I can edit to force the mount location every time? Although I'm not sure why it changes sometimes, not all the time, on restarts of the device. For now I've been trying to not restart unless really, really needed.
I also use the same setup minus the fact that I use stickmount also. The system will still do what you are discribing, but it will also mount within the SD card in the same place every time for me.
