If you have formatted in fat16 not fat32 you will only see 3.5gb

I think you might have not formated the whole sdcard or formated in fat16

Well, your should delete all ext2/ext3/ext4 and swap partition in your sd card, there partitions are used in Linux, Windows can't recognize them.
thks antonytyler, when i wanna wipe sd:ext partition stated Error : Run 'wipe ext' via console! i need to wipe by using console or any other way.pls help me.thks.
I'm going to assume you have amon_ra's recovery installed on your g1. Put the old memory card in the phone and reboot to recovery. Go to the partition sdcard menu, then go to the partition sd setting and set both linux swap and ext2 to 0. That will give you back all your missing space.
Also, make sure that the new memory card is class 6 I bought a new Samsung 8GB class 6 with a microsd card reader and a sdcard adapter for $23 shipped to my house from amazon.com. It got to my house last week, and it got here 3 days after i ordered it.
It can do in Windows

I remember that Disk Management in Windows can delete your sd card's ext2/ext3/ext4 partition, you should right click "My computer", select "manage", you will find "disk manage", click the item, you will see the partitions on your sd card, then delete them.
PS: back up your data of your FAT32 partition!
Rooted and running Prime 1.4, I formatted and partitioned the micro sd card with sdext, swap space, and fat32 storage partitions similar to a rooted phone's sd card. Now my computer will not recognize the micro sd card. Do I need the sdext and swap space, or can I do a complete fat32 or NTFS partition?

For me, I just use the normal Win format command to have a FAT32 partition.
I was going to upgrade my rom to the new flexreaper rom and i figured i would partiton my sd card... but when i did it seemed to happen a little bit quickly.. so i checked my sd card and all my data was still there (therefore it did not wipe it) which makes me think it was not partitioned.
Also when i hit partition sd card - i picked 1024 for ext size (i have a 16 gb sd) and 0 swap - then partitioning sd card and done appeared almost at the same time which puzzled me...
can anyone tell me if it is actually partitioned or not or is it even worth it to partition a sd card on a tablet?
Thanks.
I'm sure this has been asked before.. but if you are running 2.3 or higher.. what is the maximum SD card the phone can take?
I believe a 64 GB card has been reported to work. As my largest is a 16 GB SD card, I can't confirm for sure.

In the original manual I have for the phone says that 32 Gb is the maximum. At the store when I bought it told me to use 16 (as I am) to avoid having a slow phone.

i have a 32 gb card. the issue is that I think Fat32 can only support up to 32 GB.
can you have an ext2 formatted SD card working in the Dinc?
I just tried putting in an 8gb SD that I had reformatted to ext2, the phone doesn't want to mount it. I'm not sure if there is a workaround for this or not. I've been able to use the Easeus Partition Master to reformat a 500gb hard drive in fat32, so that will probably be able to format a 64gb card in a fat32 partition so it can work in a phone. Won't know for sure until someone with a 64gb card can try it though.

It appears your ext2 question is answered below but as for the size limit of FAT32, it's much larger than 32 GB. The largest a file on FAT32 can grow is 4 GB though.
It looks like FAT32 can run 2TB drives so there's no problem there.
