Force gpu rendering in ics - Nexus S General

Sooo I've been running ics roms for a few months now and I'm just finding out about the force gpu rendering option in the developer settings. And its pretty awesome, it forces hardware acceleration on apps that don't natively support it right? Are there any downsides to using this? I've noticed issues with root explorer where it basically breaks the app.

I didn't know ICS ROMs have been out for months. Lol

I personally dont think it is doing much of anything yet. Once we have the device specific drivers i'm sure it will make a difference. As of now i'm not even sure checking that box does anything.

It does things lol. download spite and malice from the market. Check the box. Open spite and malice. Go to options. And try and read the microscopic menu lol. It breaks some apps I just know spite and malice for sure.

I personally think it won't be used all that much.
I think of it as compatibility mode in miui. The apps you use never use it.
But please. Paste an argument busting my balls. I'd like to see it.

I got the Galaxy Nexus but I noticed it braks GroupMe, you cant open attachments anymore......

force gpu rendering is good for some apps which provides this feature but some gets laggy like hell

I noticed a big boost in smoothness in the official Twitter app. Pulse seem smoother as well, but it was already decent before i turned it on. Just slightly smoother.

I recommend it. I'm using it and EVERYTHING is faster. I even squeezed out an extra 300 points on a Quadrant bench score because of it . Enable it and then reboot!

Ics on nexus running so smooth

Is the world aware how good ics is is and how well it runs on the nexus s. Is even the android community aware. This phone needs a new review just because of pics. Probably not but man I got this phone for 100 dollars off Craigslist and man is this a hidden gem. This is the perfect phone for most people.

Hopefully thismeans we will be the fixed icsics

I'm quite curious though, is the new smoothness due to the forced gpu rendering? Is anyone runnning stock ICS but without 'forced gpu rendering' checked in dev settings that can give some feedback on its smoothness? I do know that scrolling anywhere now is much smoother compared to GB, almost as if animations were running in a priority thread like they do in fruit phones.
I leave hardware accel off and it is still exceptionally smooth, though not AS much with the stock kernel. Cannot notice much difference between the two with GLaDOS.
I'm pretty much in agreement with the thread starter. The ICS upgrade is amazing. Very smooth and fast. Everything seems so much better just as any upgrade should be. And also the new UI and graphics are great.
Its funny reading everywhere now about just about every handset waiting and or crying for ICS update. Most won't see it till the second half of next year.
I love my nexus even more than ever.

Agreed, ics kicks a$$.
A few things that could have been included that weren't, lucky for us those there's the nova launcher that's shaping up really nice and adds what ics should have had in the first place.
I'm running my phone on background process limit of x3 and no gpu redering with nova launcher and it's amazingly fast and smooth with no lag whatsoever, even when entering the app drawer.
As it's been said, things will only get better and I also think the Nexus S needs new reviews doing on it.

I made sure to wipe cache and the dalvik cache before installation. Im at 17 hours now with battery still at 32 percent with almost 2 hours screen on.

It really is. I love my NS even more with ICS, altough my experience with it in Gingerbread has only been about 2 weeks. Previously I was using Gingerbread (CM7) in a ZTE Blade and, as an interaction experience (regarding solely the OS), ICS beats it to a pulp. Now it's a waiting game until all the quirks are solved
has anyone tried the microbes live wallpaper. Im using stock ICS, stock kernel, non-rooted and it is just laggy as hell. Rest of the phone is ok, but i wouldnt call it buttery smooth
The microbes live wallpaper is definitely more hardware intensive than most of the others. It would likely be -slightly- better with a different kernel, but i can't see the Nexus S being powerful enough to breeze through it.
Live wallpapers for me use too much battery for too little eyecandy, though to each their own.

At first I thought so too, but now I'm not so sure. It wasn't this bad in gjngerbread albeit 2.3 seemed a lot lighter and less ram intensive than ics. Also I ran the microbes lwp on my old g2 and it ran a lot better than my nexus s. I think its more of a software issue but I'm no dev.

Note II HWComposer on S3

I tried using Note II N7100's hwcomposer lib file on my CM10.
It is smoother to me than CM10... Just my feeling... Not very sure...
Anyway don't know if its true. I just leave the Note 2's lib file attached below. Try it if you want.
Just copy the file using root explorer to system/lib/hw. When you tries to paste, the phone will just auto reboot. Wait a bit and it will be up again. Then for safety go back and change the permission to like other .so files in that folder.
Don't blame me if anything bad happens... I am not a developer. I am just a noob anyway :/
Works best on CM10 not Samsung rom for me.
I think this just forces it to run in software mode, as it wouldn't actually recognise it. Chances are that software mode is better than using the broken GPU method though.

Hmmm sorry I am not very sure of if broken hw acceleration. But to me at least the user experience is better for me and still able to have the other benefits (except project butter) of Jelly Bean.
It doesn't seem to break GPU rendering, I have force GPU and disable hw overlays ticked and everything is nice and smooth and no problems so far, running for about 30 mins or so.

Could any dev confirm the effect of this?
EDIT:Used the file now and indeed it is better...I'm on Wanam LIB sammy official.
For example i think it fixed that "break" it used to do when scrolling up and down on settings!yay!
EDIT 2:When it works it works ok...but sometimes it doesn't work...
Anyway,back to stock!Thank's OP.
Hmmm best to have dev confirming this. I tried on I9300XXDLIB it ends up becoming even more lag.... But the effect on CM10 is an improvement to me.
Well working fine for now. Don't know if I feel any difference though.
Edit: Probably not a placebo... I feel more responsive scrolling in tapatalk and gmail app.

Secondly, I do not see the big difference, sorry.
You did not do anything substabtial, you were just navigating in the Installed Apps menu in Settings... That's hardly a point of reference.
Good idea but, if you don't mind me saying, poorly executed and it does not prove anything. No offense.

My suggestion is to upgrade to MDL (if you haven't already) and flash a custom TW kernel. This makes a world of difference over stock for smoothness and battery life is still great (depending on the kernel settings used). Other thing you can try is lowering the animation scale in developer options.

Very much agreed. i personally have minimal lag....there obviously should be none. Hopefully when the next update finally drops the lag will be taken care of.
I had the same issue but once I rooted, removed bloat, disabled some apps and installed a custom kernel all the lag is gone. I'm running No Frills CPU to control the CPU and I have it set at Max 1998GHz, Min 378MHz, Governor= Performance, I/O scheduler= deadline. Not having any issues with battery either. Works Great!
Also I noticed that S Voice was never mentioned. You have to uninstall it or make it so the home button doesn't activate it.
I'm running ktoonz 7/2 kernel with all his settings. Wow it gets rid of all the lag. Plus the phone don't run so hot like it does stock. Nice and cool and fast. I get 24-30+ hours before battery swap. I was also very pissed that out of the box this phone is kind of ****ty. Thanks to our great devs its fixed

Lag on the galaxy note 10.1 2014

Hi just went to bestbuy to test the overall performance on this tablet. Sad to say that when i tested the exynos variant, I did encounter lag when I was scrolling the home screen. What I mean is that it doesn't feel smooth. Also pulling out flipboard caused lag. Trying to run a couple of applications like s note. It's not major lag that will take away the whole experience. Just lag that you'll notice from time to time even if it's minor. What's your opinion on this and how do you feel about the exynos? Is it still going to be worth it sacrificing a bit of performance for cheaper price and getting it earlier. Should I wait for the snapdragon variant since it might be faster. But it's also going to be more expensive and I won't be needing LTE. I had really high hopes of this tablet too.

I wonder if it lags even with a third party launcher like Nova Prime or Next?

Too many variables. How much other stuff was running in the background? Did you do all this testing after a fresh reboot? Who knows what the people before you were doing to it. And every Samsung experience running full blast does take it's toll, all those widgets updating all programs running etc. I'm just saying it's not all doom and gloom... Just tweak it.

I think early technical analysis showed that the exnyos governor was not exactly optimized. I'm sure this thing will fly with the proper rom. I rommed my note 2 and last year's 10.1 when I felt lag was hindering the experience and both were super fluid after modification. Samsung uses good parts. Tw just tends to be bloated.

Totally agree on that. All android tablet has come so close. When I saw the 1st gen of the note 10.1 I thought it was the one for me. But with the screen resolution, it was a big let down for me. This year this is the one. Only thing that's stopping me now is the performance.
