hi there - with the DX's bootloader being what it is I'm wondering whether I can safely restore Froyo Nandroid Backups to my DX after I upgraded it to Gingerbread?
I want to take the leap to GB but want to know if I can safely restore if I run into any problems. I don't have another device and need mine for work so doing this is risky for me if something goes wrong.
although I suppose worst comes to worst I could always buy a pre-pay phone from VZ and put my SIM in it - but whatever.
Restoring a nandroid will cause your phone to get stuck at the Motorola logo.
You can, however, flash the Froyo 2.3.340 SBF file to return to Froyo. Note that flashing an SBF will return your phone to a new state. But after SBFing you can restore your nandroid backup.

Is there a way to take a nandroid backup from a phone, and move it to another phone? I'm having an issue with my X's screen and it would make my life very easy if I could just use a nandroid backup to bring it back how I like it when Verizon gives me the new device.

Yes... You can.. but it would require someone to SBF their phone, then wipe data/cache. Then they would need to root their phone and install bootstrap all without every having set up any kind of accounts (fbook, gmail, etc.)
Whenever you take a nandroid, it captures all data on the phone...so essentially if you took a nandroid from someone who regularly uses their phone... you would wind up with all of their accounts and what not... Prob not something most people want to give out.
I would suggest using RSDlite and the correct SBF file for your bootloader version.
I think you misunderstood me. My own phone is getting replaced (screen issue), and I wanted to see if I could make a nandroid now, put it on my computer/sdcard, then load it on my new phone that Verizon sends me.
Ah! Then yes that should work. Agfter installing bootstrap you would just need to paste the nandroid folder (using the yyyymmdd-hhmm or whatever the folder title style is) into the /sdcard/clockwordmod/backup folder.
I dont think there should be any problem...but I dont know anyone that has tried this.

I did this to fix a buddy's phone. Made a nandroid of my phone and restored it on his. Just don't rename the folder to something with spaces. He did this and it ended up not working. I replaced the spaces with underscores and it worked fine.
Yes this will work. Just make a nandroid before you return it and restore it when you get a new one. However, make sure that you are using the latest software version when you make the backup or you will brick your phone trying to restore it
Question on wipe and/or restore if/when the next update comes out. I have apex 1.3.1 running with a nandroid back up. But my backup is not clean, on other words it does not go all the way back to before I flashed.
So, 1) will my phone update automatically when an ota is available? 2) do I have to wipe it clean and do a factory restore if I do in fact want to flash to the new OTA? 3) after doing an update I guess I have to literally start from scratch on root and flash because any restore would be based on the old version? 4) finally can I at least use my titanium backup regardless of rom?
Thanks in advance.

If the nandroid you have is not a clean backup, then yes, you will need to sbf and factory reset to get back to the option if an OTA comes out.
You can use titanium regardless tho =)
hopefully motorola is done messing around with froyo and the next OTA will be 2.3

Hard telling. My thought is that there will probably be another 2.2 release for the X before a 2.3 release pops out...
Not to be a pessimist... i would love to see 2.3 as soon as possible. I have seen someone saying that Verizon had been toying with a Gingerbread build on the X.
I'm looking to back up my wife's X before performing the 2.2 to 2.3 update just to make sure she doesn't lose anything (I know there's a low chance, but better safe than sorry, huh); what is considered the best backup utility out there, and, more importantly, can you back up from one release and restore to a newer one?
Thanks in advance -
I just updated to the 2.3 on my DX and all i used was the factory backupassistant on the phone, smooth sailing. Originally i had some issue with the update because I was rooted and had Bootstrapped my phone, during that time I had used Titianium Backup as well as made a mb5 nandroid backup with bootstrap through clockwork, but if she is stock has a google account then you are good to go. Just be sure that before you install the update that you sync with google/backupassistant on her phone. Good luck.
I am going to have my new Desire Z in a few days and I want to root it. I have a question, how can I backup all of oficial rom, kernel, radio ets.? Because I am not sure if I will send it to HTC for warranty in a few months or in 2 years. What do I need to do before rooting my device for not to have any warranty problems? Thanks for now...

Well you're going to have to downgrade in order to get root, which will wipe the device as far as I know.
After you've downgraded and rooted, you can then use ROM manger to make a 'nandroid' backup of the device. It effectively makes a perfect copy of the entire device, and saves it to your SD card. After you flash a new ROM or anything, you can always go back and restore that nandroid backup, putting you exactly where you were when you made the backup.
It should be noted that when you send it into HTC for repair, you'll want to unroot it anyways, which will wipe the device again and return to stock w/ S-ON (you dont want to send it to HTC with your info on it anyways), so keeping the stock rooted ROM isn't completely necessary (although it is a good idea to have around for troubleshooting reasons).

First off all thank you for your post...
Second; The things that I understand;
1) I have to downgrade and root my phone
2) I must have a nandroid backup (I will learn what it is and how to do this), so i will have a backup which will help me to restore me device again when i want.)
3) I need to S-ON my device again when sending to HTC.
4) The mst important is saving nandroid backup will save my device
Are these true or will i have to study more?
By the way, I want to try sense 3.0 but i am not sure to have virtuous rom. do you recommend to get it? Which is best; to have a gingerbread rom w/ sense 2.1 or froyo rom w/ sense 3.0? As i know, virtuous rom doesn't have gingerbread now but it might have soon...

Yep you got it. After downgrade/rooting (follow Wiki guide), use ROM manager (download in the market) to flash ClockWorkMod Recovery. Then use that to make a backup. It saves the file to your SD card. Copy that file to your computer for safe keeping (good to have it in 2 places if you really wanna make sure you keep it).
To get S-ON later if you need to send in for repair, follow the Wiki to unroot and that'll be done. It should be noted that unrooting the phone will flash it back to completely stock setup, so the stock nandroid backup isn't necessary to keep in order to send back to HTC. The only real reason to keep that rooted stock backup around is for troubleshooting problems, etc. you can always go back to the stock ROM to try things.
As far as running Virtuous for Sense 3.0 or 2.1, that's all personal preference. I advise just trying different ROMs and seeing which you like. Everyone likes something different. Just remember to nandroid the one you're on before switching so you can go back if need be.
[SOLVED!] How can I backup oficial Desire Z rom etc.?

I quess to have a nandroid backup is necessary to send back to HTC before you told me. Thank you for this. I will try lots of roms and decide which one i want.
I was just going to make a post about the same subject until I saw this. I also too want to back up my G2 stock rom. I'm currently returing my old G2 inplace of a replacement G2. I want to know how I can back up the stock rom without rooting? I downloaded rom manager but need root to continue. My old phone was rooted and had all my backups that way. I wanna try out the new 2.3.4 from OTA when I get the notification to do so, but just incase I don't like it I wanna go back to stock then root. So how can I do a full backup without root or doing a factory data reset? Thanks

The only way to do a full backup is to root and use ROM manager to make a nandroid backup. Like I said before, backing up the stock ROM is nice for troubleshooting etc. but in order to un-root you'll have to completely wipe the device and will install the stock ROM again.
If you want to try out 2.3 you can use CM7 (which is stock 2.3 w/ some improvements), or wait for the official OTA to be pre-rooted then you can flash it after you've rooted.

Yea sorry for the confusion if I made it sound that way. The action of un-rooting the device will put it back to stock, you don't have to save the stock ROM. The only reason to do so is if you like to have the stock rooted ROM around just in case you want to try something on it.

Ok, so I want to get the update for my MT4G, but I'm currently permrooted with s=off (used visionary), and I used gfree to get the universal CID and unlocked SIM. Then, I installed one of faux123's Sense kernel's for some performance boost.
I've done a nandroid backup of my current phone, synced my contacts to google, written down all my apps and backed up most of them to my SD card.
SO, now I want to go all the way back so that I can take my phone into the store and have them install android 2.3.4, and that is where you all come in:
Q1: What exactly is my first step? Get back to a stock kernel? Or just go straight for unrooting?
Q2: Do I need to flash a stock kernel back onto my device? I have a nandroid backup from before I flashed faux123's kernel, if I restore it, will that take care of it?
Q3: If I nandroid restore a completely stock backup (this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=845756), will that take care of the universal CID, unlocked SIM, and engineering bootloader (basically, is it a one-step solution)?
Q4: I have 2 unroot guides, and I want to make sure that I'm doing the right thing. Assuming I can get back to a stock kernel (see Q2), will this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=924923) suffice to undo everything I did? Or do I need to use a more technical method (like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863899)?
Thank you a thousand times for all your help.

If you go to the tmo store they use an sdcard with the update on it and if you update you will lose your root. Right now there is no way to root 2.3.4, that been said the update that is on that card has been uploaded and posted on here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1217237 and you can download it and install it yourself with s-off. I am running it right now with s-off
If all you want is the update, but wish to keeprl root and cid unlocked then just flash the the leaked ROM and you will have the 2.3.4 ROM and kernel all in one easy process... Now, I know you said that you backed up your apps and such on the sdcard, but when changing ROM bases it is not wise to restore system app data. Just a thought... If you wish to lose root and retain sin unlock then take the phone as is to the store and let them flash the ROM for you... It is an ruu file so it will replace the the bootloader, radio, ROM and kernel... The don't care if you are rooted as you will lose root after the flash your phone.

I didn't know that, so it's better to delete all the apps and system data from the SD, then re-download each app and reconfigure manually?
It's better to back up only user apps and PIM data, reconfigure the system from scratch, and reinstall user apps with data and PIM data back.
