MKV stands for the Matroska Multimedia Container, which is an open standard free container format. It can contain multiple video, audio, picture or subtitle tracks in one file. Matroska is similar to other containers like AVI and MP4, but it can hold video files from Blu-ray discs. With the development of Blu-ray movie, most people prefer enjoy movies in Blu-ray discs rather than in DVD discs. The reason is simple, that is Blu-ray discs offer more HD videos in a larger storage space. So, as a wild used video format ripped from Blu-ray discs, MKV has been the symbol of HD videos. And, do you want to watch MKV videos with Asus Eee Pad Transformer?
But, how to enjoy MKV movies on Eee Pad Transformer since the MKV videos are always in a large size and a HD video codec that Asus Eee Pad does not support to decode. Maybe Pavtube Video Converter for Mac can help you. It is a great Mac Eee Pad MKV converter for you to convert MKV videos for Transformer playing.
Here, I would like to take a MKV video file for example to show how to Mac convert MKV to Transformer.
First, import MKV from my Mac to the Pavtube Mac MKV to Eee Pad Transformer converter, and check the properties of the MKV file. Below are the detail parameters.
Video:
Format: h264
Resolution: 1280x544
Frame Rate: 23.976
Bit Rate: 0kbps
Duration: 00:01:02
Then, you can click the format bar to choose compatible output format for Asus Eee Pad Transformer playing. To enable Asus Transformer play MKV videos, you need choose a format with high video quality for Asus Eee Pad Transformer. I recommend you choose HD Video >> H.264 HD Video (*.mp4).
The program offers you changing the profile settings for the output file. Freely click the settings button and adjust the suitable video and audio settings for the HD MP4 format. Generally speaking, the default settings are suitable enough.
After all the settings have been finished, please click the convert button to start to convert MKV to MP4 format for Eee Pad Transformer. After the conversion finished, you can click the open button and get the converted MP4 videos. Then you need transfer MP4 videos to Asus Eee Pad transformer with a USB data cable.
On a PC I use DVD catalyst. It has a profile for the TF but I prefer using the ipad2 HQ profile as the file size is slightly smaller and the resolution I think is slightly better for the TF.

Before converting your MKVs give BSPlayer (free) a try as it plays the MKVs i've tried fine ! and thats streaming from my PC too.
I couldnt find any other player that would handle MKVs as good as BSplayer.

I use Dice but it stutters with newer HDTV shows (like Terra Nova).

BSPlayer x2. Just make sure you get the codec that it prompts you to install ARMv6 or 7 I'm not sure which. That should be all you need.
If you're insisting on converting them though, use handbrake all the way..

Actually most MKV are encoded in h264 (AVC) which is supported by the TF.
The things that make MKV incompatible are that audio is usually AC3 and the MKV container itself is not natively compatible.
Gotsent (mac & pc) and Xenon MKV (pc) will convert the audio to AAC (natively compatible) and put everything in an MP4 container. And since only the audio is actually converted the process is really quick. & both are free...
i'm very noob with mkv, videos converting etc but i downloaded from web some mkv's and i tried play them and testing out many players...i use settings reported HERE to convert my videos if i want to put them in the tablet,if i want to play them on native format i put in my external hard drive (i don't find a 100% working player yet....the best i tried it isn't ok all the time,it stutter in some moment...)
MX player plays the several 720p .mkv videos I have without much fuss. I have the current season of TopGear in .mkv format and play them directly from my 500Gb drive on my TF. I have no need to convert to something else.

1 more vote for mx player, it can also handle ogm containers and its very customizable, have a fast swipe fast forward, all good.
But sadly, tegra 2 is garbage, nvidia sold us a lemon, I have some videos that even in a proper MP4 container encoded in 720p normal profile the decoder strugles, at the handbrake thread there's a long discussion about this and another issues.

I think this really bares some repeating. I like my transformer. But tegra2 was sold as considerably more powerful than it actually is.
I expected seamless 720p playback as a given, and here we are, trying to find ways to convert/playback standard files downloaded from the internet.
At that point, how is this different from iPhone/iPad where you need to convert files to Apple's preferred format in iTunes before "synching"? IMO not much.
I've found the best way is to stream from your PC. Granted it's not very useful if you are not always internet connected and if you have a crappy connection or cap. I use Plex for streaming indoors. Smooth as butter and offloads the decoding onto the PC so it will play 1080p [email protected] no problemo.
I just downloaded BSPlayer and I'm pretty happy with it. There was NOTHING that would play my Canon T2i 1080p video smoothly. BSPlayer comes very close. It drops frames and audio, but it is watchable! 1080p/24fps hiccups about once every 15-30 seconds, which I would consider acceptable. All my 720p stuff is silky smooth. My 720p MPEG2/AC3 files stream reasonably well from WMC. 1080i WTV files play, but have bad sync problems. MX Player and Dice failed differently on all of these.
I have to agree that MX Player has a better UI, but BSPlayer seems to have a more robust engine.
I'm running stock at the moment. MX Player did do better at 1.4mhz. I assume BSPlayer would improve as well.
I do have to agree that Tegra 2 is a little weak. I'm confident that Tegra 3 will get me where I need to be.

between them MX player and BSPlayer can play pretty much any video file you throw at them, if they stutter, try clearning your tablets cache and killing some resource heavy apps that are running in the background.
i have TB of video in loads of different formats and i am yet to find a file i cant play well.

mkv is a container. If the video was encoded using h.264, the tab will play.
Wtf, why bother mentioning a macbook? Are you on pills, or did you forget to take them??

Yes, the SGT can play 720p .mkvs with no issue, it's something I do on a regular basis with mine.

The tab handles greatly hd video. For some reason it even supports mkv and external subtitles with the built in player. Aaaand my mid 2008 MacBook already plays with no issue full hd video, so it goes without question that a newer cpu coupled with a decent/good video chip will play a simple 720p file XD

Galaxy Tab is a good video player and play the most formats. Only if it has stereo sound. It cant handle multichannel audio.
And a sad thing is that most of the mvk movies has multichannel 5.1 DD dts etc. So you need to convert them ao you get stereo sound or it wont play the movie.
Galaxy Tab has a really good stock player. Rockplayer vplayer cant compare to the stock one that works great.
I belive that those who have problems whit playing movies whit xoom, have movies whit multichannel. Have not got any answer if android 3.0 can handle it. I now that android 2.2 Cant handle it and had hopes that 3.0 should play multichannel.

What version of the Galaxy Tab do you have?? (Sprint, Verizon, Locked / Unlocked etc..??)
I watch a lot of anime and that would be the primary function of this tablet for me. I was wondering if this tablet could handle the 720p/1080p mkv files encoded in h624. and also if they support subtitles.
here is a test file for current 10.1 owners.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9ZQAFZIZ
I got lots of anime 720P MKV files. They won't play on any Tegra 2 tablet I've had, including this one.
There video player apps in the Market that will play MKV.. but they don't usually support hardware acceleration so it'll prolly be very choppy :/
There's not a tablet out in existence im aware of that can play MKV with hardware accel.. sigh.
Galaxy Tab 7" can, and I suspect the HTC Flyer could too.
Regards,
Dave
First thing I do with all my anime mkv is to convert them to mp4 with the subs burned in, with Handbrake. I prefer this because it takes the guess work out of not knowing if this device will play such and such mkv, and everything handles mp4 nowadays moreso than mkv. Even Archos devices that are the king of media codecs and formats have problems with some mkv files even, because as a container an mkv file could contain a myriad combo of codecs.

When the TouchWiz update comes out expect this tablet to get a lot more media friendly.
Mine would appear to play mkv files no problem, although I can't control them, fast forward or jump to a certain point, which means I wouldn't want to rely on it.

don't bet on it. tergra 2 can't handle the throughput of most high profile hd. it can handle some but it's very picky. it also chokes on ac3 and has a hard time with aac multichannel sound. i have some multichanel files that'll play and some won't.
tegra 2 is no media powerhouse. imho the archos 101 is still the best for all the files it can play, but it's quality is lackluster... and the screen sucks.
It doesn't do it natively, but MoboPlayer is a great app (free) for it. It will handle 720p MKV no problem.
it can handle some 720p mkv. its very hard to make a general statement for files higher than main profile and 2 channel sound.
tegra is limited on media playback. check all the other tegra 2 forums. this is the reason boxee box dropped tegra 2.
don't get me wrong, I love the tablet, but there are some limitations to expect with media playback. it's not even as goog as the gt7".

I hardly think portrait view slowing down has to do with the hardware. More likely HC.
I use my tab for MKV's all the time. RockPlayer Lite handles it like a champ. Perfect audio and all. Scrubbing works fine too. Just select software decoding mode when playing the videos
I found a program caled XenonMKV which rips the mp4 out of the mkv container and converts the audio to aac. It's a much faster process since there is no video re-encoding involved and it works 'ok'. It still skips a bit but it at least kind of works smoothly most of the time.
EDIT: tried RockPlayer Lite Software & Hardware and it was still stuttery from time to time. (3500kbps 720p mkv and mp4 from XenonMKV)
I think if you had a Max bitrate of about 3mbps or less and it wasn't AC3 it could do it.

I'm very concerned about video support in honeycomb tablets, and in galaxy tab in particular. I don't understand why, but it seems this feature has been left behind in every honeycomb tablet, whereas SGS and SGS 2 handle 720p mkv with hardware acceleration very well in stock video player. I just don't understand what the manufacturers are doing.
I can't even transfer that large of a file on my tab. It hangs and stops at the end. Weird.
Handbrake is free and works like a champ to convert any file. I'm using it on the @pple tv2 settings with some minor tweaks

Does the native player of Xoom also plays 1080p video files
ie. mp4, avi, wmv, etc.
If not, does other players like vplayer, mobo could make this possible?
I doubt as Motorola Web and Wikipedia say the Xoom can play
"Up to 720p video" but sure it's not quite enough as long as HDMI it to a 32" TV.
Therefore is it possible for Xoom playing 1080p video smoothly?

you can convert a 1080p mkv to mp4 format and it will play with no issues. or converting, i suggest DVDCatalyst.

I wonder is there any meaning the video playback ability of GT10.1

BTW I personally hate converting.

Using Moboplayer (from market) with Tiamat 2.2, 1080p video will just about play, but its not ideal.
720p is fine.
I only play file resolutions up to 720p on the Xoom because of the native resolution. I use Mobo player for my .avi and DVD Catalyst converted .mp4 files but if I am in a rush and have a high bit rate 720p .mkv file, the Dice player plays everything I throw at it. I have monitored my usage of both and I really mainly use Mobo. Dice comes in handy when I just don't want to wait for a conversion because I am heading out on short notice and is the only player I have found to play high bit rate 720p .mkv x.264 files. I prefer converting because I can give the video files a color boost in DVD Catalyst since videos seem to lose their punch on the Xoom screen.

I've had good results with BSPlayer.
One thing is beyond my understanding.
My past Samsung infuse with 1.2ghz single core processor was able to play 1080p itunes trailers but xoom tablet struggles.
Also Xoom has native support for .mp4 files and .mov/.mkv/.avi requires extra treatment whether extra player or software decoding.
.........................
on a general note (covers most mobiles and tablets and/or android os)
why companies release crippled products to market?
The end user is left to work out what is working and what is not.
Xoom is upper range product and it is not acceptable that it can't play 1080p files smoothly.

The Xoom does play 1080p but how well depends on the codec and player. As for why you would want to play 1080p videos on a 720p screen, I just can't comprehend. It will not look better because the screen resolution is lower than 1080p. If you played 1080p on any screen lower than 1920x1080 pixels you will not be getting the benefit of the 1080p resolution.

If you must keep the resolution at 1080p then the best thing for stutter free playback is at least convert into an .mp4 which DVD Catalyst does but again, there will not be noticeable quality increase over a 720p. If I had a 1080p .mkv that I wanted to play on the Xoom, that would be one of the times when I would prefer convert or downsize but for everything else including 720p .mkv, we no longer need to convert.

Thats just the thing though, we need to be realistic. You don't have to convert any videos other than high bit rate 1080p which even if you were only using a desktop PC you would need to meet a system requirement to play. Tablets like these are new. Could you imagine a few years ago having a 1Ghz laptop with 1GB of RAM and being pissed it wont play my 1080p movie in 3D? The Xoom is one of the first of it's kind and was never designed to play high bit rate 1080p and you find that a bother. It's like buying an Ipod 8 yrs ago then saying what good is this if all my CD's wont play on it. You had to rip & convert everything or buy the file which was still then converted. The screen is 720p. Most shows on T.V. are 720p or upscaled 720p (1080i). Where are you getting 1080p videos from, Blu Ray and digital copies which all need to be 'converted' in order to become a portable file on any system unless you have a disc player or made a 20GB image rip. Its not a pain in the butt to have to only convert one file type. My laptop is very powerful but cant play movies in 3D yet my T.V. can, should I be upset? I should add, Dice player is still the way to go to play all files with no conversion unless you want to play high bit rate 1080p on a screen not designed for it.
Hey guys this is a good video conversion program for virtually any device it comes pre-loaded with 1000's of device profilea. So if you want to convert videos to the closest possible specs for whatever device with good compatibility then try this program:
DVD Catalyst-PM if you need the program
*I also use it to convert 4-8GB MKV to AVCHD with no quality loss. It just remuxes the audio and makes it ready to burn to DVD or DVD-DL so its compatible in PS3 and other Blu-Ray players
Photos are attached. Hope it help some of you

For Blu-rays I've found DVD Catalyst 4 inadequate because of sync issues. I've also read that by turning off Blu-ray Telecine will correct the issue but it doesn't. So, I had to look at other software to rip and convert my Blu-rays. Also DVD Catalyst 4 set my Kaspersky Antivirus Heuristic off and said it was performing in a way similar to a virus or trojan.
I've found that Aiseesoft Blu-ray Ripper works really well. It has video acceleration and will utilize you're AMD (app acceleration) or a NVidia video card with (Cuda technology). It's normally $39 but you can get it HERE for $23.40 with the coupon code 'SMRT-ADEK'. HERE is a guide as to what settings to use for the TF.
Another great software would be Pavtube Blu-ray Video Converter Ultimate which runs $65 but you can get it for $37.70 HERE with coupon code 'SOFT-K8TT'. It makes flawless videos for the TF using the XOOM settings. HERE is a guide on how. It has video acceleration just for NVidia video card. It will also let you select not only different subtitles but allows for 'Only allow forced subtitles'.
When I get home from work I'll upload some clips so you can test them on your TF. Also I suggest you use either Dice Player or MX Video for playback.
EDIT: This is the Pavtube settings. Right click on the picture and 'Save As' to download a short single chapter MP4 file to test on your TF.

Mxvideoplayer can play mkv 1080p video with H/W , though it only works with 8-bit video, not 10-bit profile.

You can check it by going to the video properties on your preferred video player on your pc,im pretty sure most mkv files are 8 bit.
is the 8bit restriction a limitation of the hardware, or of the (mxvideo)player?

Im not really sure about that but whenever i tried to play 10 bit mkv video on mxvideoplayer with hardware decoding, it gave me a black screen.
Dice
You might want to try Dice player as well, i had loads of mkv rips that would not play audio on other players but dice has never failed me on mkv's

I tried dice player it doesnt work. so far mxvideoplayer, dice player and moboplayer doesnt work for 10 bit mkv with H/W.
I'm not sure if there are any players that can play 10bit files at the moment. For general mkv's I've been using Dice Player as it has been able to play all my files on my Asus transformer which other players weren't able to. But since the exynos processor is far superior to the tegra2 I would think any player that has hardware accelerated playback will suffice.
Most recently I've been using BS player as well for playing mkv's stored on my NAS streamed over wifi. This is the only player that seems to be able to play 720p video smoothly over wifi.
Stock Samsung player can't play MKV like Galaxy S and Galaxy SII?!? It's the best HW player for my SII...

I use MoboPlayer, it can play almost video formats well.
But I also got aneesoft video converter to help me do some conversions when need, and it let me to play HD, and AVCHD videos that shot by HD camcorder smoothly.
Aneesoft? Never heard of that. I'm looking for a .mov converter as the tablet converter had trouble with my .mov files.
Is that the best converter out there?

Well, aneesoft video converter can convert the .MOV video well for my tablet, it has a special output selection for tablet, so you just need to choose your tablet model as output.
I'll echo the mx player recommendation; I like its rendering options and subtitle support among other things. Lack of hi10p support is a hardware limitation. Video with 10-bit color profiles is just too new and (at least afaik) isn't supported by any current hardware. And of course mobile cpus lack the compute muscle to decode decent-quality x.264 smoothly. So as others have said, transcoding on your computer is your best bet. If you don't know anything about video encoding, try http://hi10ptranscoder.wordpress.com/. It's a simple program for this exact problem.
For me Dice-player had stuttering every 10 secs on some .mkv-files. The stock player doesn't stutter, but it also doesn't support movies with DTS-sound.
MX Player seems to work the best and it also has an option for SW-decoding the sound if a file has DTS-sound. (Have to change it from the default HW-decoding to hear sound.)
No need to worry about 8 or 10 bit - there are NO rips with 10bit of any movies, 720p, 1080p - all are OK...EXCEPT some crazy anime, seen them - I really don't get this 10 bit hype - just some ultra-grainy stuff...
Stock video player can play MKV smoothly , why bother to use another player ?

Stock player doesnt play audio if the mkv contains DTS track.
MX Video player for me is the best. Without chainging the H/W decoding i just selecting the DTS audio track and plays it perfect.
I have done tests with heavy mkc samples with 20-40MBPS with DTS sound and it plays it so smooth. Smoother than my expensive O2 HMR-2000!
My oldest Galaxy S2 plays them perfect too but with same samples i have some frame drops some times even if i have it at 1.6GHz.
It seems tab 7.7 doesnt have excactly the same cpu/gpu. At papers it is the same. But not in real life. Maybe the memory or the controler or the chipset or the architecture? I dont know.
It plays PERFECT any mkv with DTS and it is an great media player. The only problem is to read NTFS HDD's. Because the fullHD / full length good quality movies is always bigger than 4GB's that the file system of TAB can read.

Ntfssd can read NTFS sdcard, Drive Mount can read OTG NTFS or EXT storage devices. These two app are free in Market.
I would have to chime in and say MX-Video player is the best especially on how it handles video stretching, the stock player cant really cover the entire screen and both dice and mvideo player zooms the image to fit the screen, only MX video player stretches it properly to cover the entire screen, pretty nice if your using a honeybar
