[Q] Continuum Stuck on "Downloading" Screen - Continuum General

I just got a Samsung Continuum off a friend that tried to put a custom rom on it. He failed and passed the phone to me. He couldn't tell me what he did so I'm working from scratch.
What I do know is that the phone constantly loops into "Downloading" mode. I have tried flashing SCH-I400-EC07-FROYO-REL-PRODUCTION via ODIN. The flashed are successful but when the phone restarts it going right back into the "Downloading" mode.
I also tried using Heimdall which flashed successfully but again back into "Downloading" mode. I know the phone isn't bricked and I know I'm not doing something right.
Any help would be appreciated.

Come into IRC and we'll see if we can't get you up.

Try my magical fix....

What PIT file should I use with the "magical fix"?
I'm in IRC now as well
UPDATE: Tried magical fix with no luck. Keeps rebooting into the "Downloading" mode.

You need to use the EC07 PIT. In the dev section, along with the stock froyo rom, and make sure repartition and autoreboot are both checked.

Hmmm... That rom has everything from the bootloader up... And it is passing in odin? Does it pass everything, or does it fail any part of it? I've got a little bit of time before I'm loaded. I'll be in irc

I was trying to install the DJ05 modem.bin via odin, however, the phone will not boot. it shows a symbol of a phone caution sign and a computer. I have tried to reflash but to no avail. I have tried to flash back to DI01 but has not helped. I can boot into download mode but nothing else.
Did you use phone or pda. If you used phone, you are bricked
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
i used pda. I've done this in the past with no problems, however, this time for my friends phone it has done this.
try flashing in download mode again. I've got that problem before. I reflashed it with stock kernel, system and recovery then all things came back. ^^
Search Adrynalin he is a Mod on here that is Amazing with these phones. If he has time he will walk you through some steps that will get you back! Don't forget to buy him a beer!
The OP actually got everything sorted out on another forum. Turns out it was just as simple as removing the battery before plugging in and launching Odin

Bricked Vibrant

Sorry in advance if im posting this in the wrong thread or if this has been posted before....
I have a Vibrant and i was updating using samsung kies. I never rooted my phone or did and customize things to it. i was going through the updating process when samsung kies said that the update failed and to disconncet my phone. so i disconnected my phone (the screen said download mode and do not turn off target). now when i try to turn my phone on i get a black screen with a phone triangle and computer logo. it will not go in to recovery. cau u please help... thanks
hopefully there is a way to fix this without using odin
odin and download mode there is a thread in development about in the bible i think about unbricking a vibrant, its very hard to brick a vibrant completely, I have done so before, but you can recover via odin.
Your phone is not fully bricked. and your better off than me half the time
How were you trying to boot into recovery if you've never rooted or customized? Your phone is not completely bricked if its turning on so I'm sure there's a fix.

that should have everything you need, you wont be able to get into recovery you need to get into download mode

You can boot into recovery without being rooted... i did it before when i wanted to do a hard reset.. plus the tmobile rep wanted me to try and boot into recovery to do a hard reset and clear all user data.

remove the battery for five minutes, then reinsert it. You can now go back to the normal download mode. ANd I think you can even boot up normally. The former scenario happened to me so I am quite sure of that.
THANKS!!!!
big thanks to everyone i got my phone up and running again. i used odin (which was tricky) and followed the steps i saw in a youtube video. right before i was about to give up i called tmobile and ordered a replacement phone ....lol...tried one more time and it worked im SOOOO HAPPY this is a great community of people , couldnt have done it without u guys THANKS AGAIN!
I always brick my baby, and Odin is always there to save me

After Flashing my SGS2 100's of times, it's now a paperweight

ok, maybe not 100's of times but my bootloader showed 52 last time i flashed. Not sure what happened, but something went wrong. My phone only shows a picture of a phone, with a yellow triangle, and a picture of a computer. Under that it says firmware failed, and under that it says try recovery mode. Download mode, and recovery mode shows the the same screen described as above, and odin does not see phone. I left the battery out over night, and this morning, the same screen, and odin still don't see the phone. I know all the key combos to get into recovery or download mode, and neither works.
You have a bricked phone now. Use JIG USB to save it!
I had similar problem and resolved mine by removing the battery, reinserting it and holding down volume down and home keys while powering on (download mode). Then I connected phone to pc via usb and used odin to flash kernel. Hope that works for you.
Or you could try this
One-Click UnBrick
it seems this is the job for a USB jig (I think)

Have you tried recovery firmware option via KIES?
Bah, just take out battery and put it back in and go to download mode and flash the firmware with Odin.
Thanks God i've got my Jig..
is it related with the limitation write of the NAND flash? quite worry about it..any idea?
You only need a jig if you can't get into download mode. Though from what I've read on here might be good to have to reset the flash counter.

Does the number of times flashed has anything to do with the failure? Is there a limit after which the hardware gets weaker?
Believe me. Most rom chefs or developers in here flash at least 500+ times (if they tested their product) and I don't think they have issue. (I flash my X1 at least a 1000+ times when I was a rom chef and it's still working great now)
Flash memory does have a life span on number or Read/write. But I doubt anyone here can reach that limit with 3+ yrs (by that time, you will probably get another phone).
Agreed its unlikely that 50 odd our even a few hundred rom flashes should damage your nand memory. Unless it was faulty in the first place

This problem..
..Was notorious on the Captivate. We lovingly referred to it "Phone ! Computer" screen.
The good news.. If you see this screen the level 1 boot loader is fine and you are only soft bricked.
If you ever plug in the phone to a power source with it turned off and you see nothing then you're screwed.
Same scenario as when you plug in a JiG and nothing happens.

Hold and do not release the key combo for DLM, your phone will reboot about 3 times it should then enter DLM.
I did try this before your reply and no go, I tried again today, got the same screen, however Odin and kies, both saw the phone, went back to stock then back to cognition 1.31. My captivate, inspire, and infuse ive flashed over and over and over and never bricked a phone until my S2. It's back up and going strong now. Now im afraid to flash it again. This is best phone ever and im keeping it until the S3 comes out, so im trying to not render my S2 useless yet lol

For days, odin and kies didn't see phone no matter what I did. I'm not a developer, but I'm nowhere close to a rookie either. What ever happen was a hoax, because clockwork and download mode works as it should again. Next update for cognition i'll flash, i doubt anything will happen.

**** happens. Flashes go right 99.9% of the time when you do everything right. You just hit that 0.1% where something went wrong during the flash.

How to Fix Almost Any Bricked Vibrant

I recently bircked my vibrant with a bad kernel flash, and it wouldn't get past the Vibrant Samsung screen. I fixed it, so I decided to post how I did it here, to hopefully help someone. I am not sure if this works on newer Vibrants. If you have one of the first batch then you should be fine.
Step 1
You need to get ODIN and the stock Samsung/T-Mo 2.2 rom. I am not allowed to post outside links, and the file is too big for an attachment, so you will have to search for it, try googling "Download Samsung Vibrant Stock Rom"
Download all the files and extract them somewhere where you can find them.
Step 2
Once you have those downloaded, start up ODIN, for pda, select the pda (.tar) file you downloaded. For the pit file (make sure you extract it, it should be .pit not .rar or .zip) select the pit file you downloaded.
Step 3
Now, pull the battery, and re-insert it. Make sure your phone is turned off, and hold down VOL+ and VOL-, then plug in the USB cable to your computer, then phone. (DO NOT press the power button on the phone) Wait a second, and the download screen should now show up. Simply press start on ODIN and wait for your phone to get the the unlock screen. All done!
If this worked, please reply and tell me!

How does one ODIN any other ROM?
My vibrant is bricked with ICS passion v10.6.
What do I need to do to ODIN it to the same ROM?
I'd love to avoid rebuilding from stock....

I am not sure of any ROMs that still require odin, as CWM is a lot easier to use. I would reccomend going back to stock, rooting the phone, then installing CyanogenMod. If you're fast enough, you can get it done and have a working phone in about an hour.
Well the only mode I can get on the bricked phone is download mode with the jig.
After that ODIN works. I've never been able to get ADB to play well on this computer.
There is an ODIN version of stock 2.2 I may try if I don't find something newer. Thanks! I did find a guide on how to make an ODIN ROM but it is a bit late for me to do it...

Thanks, my brick is now a Vibrant again. After seeing nothing but a boot loop for a week Eclair looks wonderful!!!
Heimdall One-Click was my only hope and remedy for several times, it's capable of installing the right drivers (which not always were SGH-t959!!!) in Download mode, even when Od in wouldn't sede my phone.

BRICKED? Can you help?

So I have had AOKP and CM being flashed back and forth for months now, but I am headed out of town tomorrow on a long trip and want the stock experience for roaming/reception/mms/etc...
I used Rwilco12's Stock Restore Automatic ODIN from here - http://www.rwilco12.com/downloads.p...H-L720)/Stock ROMs/MF9/No Data Restore/Rooted
Now when I went to download mode to run this bad boy and erase TWRP and AOKP and go back to stock, it randomly failed (not once, not twice but three times). SInce the first failed attempt it has been giving me a KIES error message about emergency firmware yadada. KIES won't recognize my phone tho, there was never any upgrades using KIES ever to my phone so I dont even have it setup and when I tried it wouldnt work.
What can I do to get any firmware working on my phone again? Right now I can access download mode and then any attempt to get into recovery/normal boot gives me that KIES error message.
PLEASE! I've got to get this fixed ASAP I'm leaving did not have time for this complication =[
Thank you in advance

Big question?
Did you take MJA update?
If so you can ONLY get to an MJA ROM. There is a thread for that.
You're in luck If your firmware is still on MF9 check this out. Make sure to run PC Odin 'As administrator'

I have no taken any updates in SOOOO long, since like I got the phone I immediately put TWRP and then just been flashing ROMs. I have no clue which it is in I would have to say older than MF9 even? I'll try the MF9 one tho this reallllly sucks. I've found guides for fixing it via KIES but you need the serial number which STUPIDLY is not located on the battery backing sticker =[
Thanks for your help
I think it might have been on MDL when I switched to AOSP? Trying to find a MDL ODIN restore do you think that would work?

Well if you don't have MJA (4.3) the mf9 method will work.
Kies blows a** in my opinion.
Things to keep in mind:
Start PC Odin as admin
put phone into Download before pluging it into PC.
Make sure you have a GOOD or BRAND NEW USB cable. [probably 20 times I've seen this be an issue too!].
If phone shows up on COM port then flash away.
First boot takes about five earth minutes. If it doesn't move past the yellow sprint bootscreen to 'update applications' after that time try a batter pull and restart. Then another five minutes. [sometimes flashing another kernel (back to downlaod mode, pc odin kernel in PDA slot) will resolve issue if batter pull didn't work after full .tar flash.
I
Kies definitely blows, I've never used it. Just since that's the only thing I can see is the KIES error message or download mode I figured I might be able to recover via KIES.
I tried a MF9 one click one nodata one no-root/deletes data, a couple times on both with two different cords and having no luck. My last shot is this MDL stock file I'm flashing via regular odin prayin it will work..

Like I mentioned (and others in the followups to my linked post) said, might have to do it a couple times or do battery pull. Maybe flash a custom kernel (KToonz etc) then try and boot.
Also you mentioned you think y were on mdc or mdl, you could grab one of those one clicks and give that a go too.

Couldn't find a one click for MDL but I found the tar file which I'm flashing in the PDA section. Trying on my 3rd go now but it keeps freezing on the boot. I waited a good 20 minutes its just stuck there. I will keep trying, already pulled battery many times. I will look into a kernel because the one click/pda in odin is getting me no where =[

I just don't get it, it keeps failing when it tries to flash the boot.img part of the md5. This is just ridiculous ODIN always fixes the problem and now it just hates the **** out of me. So frustrated :crying:
OHHH UPDATE::: I just tried ODIN 3.04 after trying the three versions released since 3.04 and it made it past BOOT! It's flashing the system as I type. Fingers freaking crossed!!!
WELL! I'm getting somewhere. The ODIN was successful with 3.04 and an MDL tar file!
However I'm stuck on the yellow logo big time, took battery out after waiting 7 minutes and again when booting stuck on the yellow sprint screen. Should I try one of the MF9 one clicks again now that I'm free from the Kies error?

Two things that have helped me out. 1) upgrade the samsung drivers to the latest. Or 2) Whenever Im stuck in a bottloop or The Yellow Sprint screen after flashing to a stock rom is to go into stock recovery and do a factory reset. It usually works for me..
