What I want in a rom
1. A fully functional MIUI would be nice (4g, wifi, sms, mms...)
2. Names show when you start to dial a number, in accordance with the letters on the dial pad. (ex. if I dial 1 - the name AAA from my phone book shows up; if I dial 1 and then 2 - The names starting with AB, such as abby, abid, abdul etc...)
3. pull down menu (wifi, bt, gps...)
3. sync with facebook on phonebook. (option to combine facebook/ social media contacts with phonebook)
4. built in tethering/ wifi hotspot/ mobile AP
5. good bat life + fluid transitions
6. the night reading found in CM7 would be nice
7. customizable buttons on the pulldown window
8. being able to long press a button on pull down and it takes me to the location of that button in settings.
9. fast and fluid app drawer.
10. ability to play multiple media formats out the box like mkv...
Let's start there thanks for asking

Program stability
Maybe reception? Or a real fix for horrible 3g speeds? I would give it a test drive if at least the radio was fixxed but not sure of your skills.

Yeah but I heard cm6 doesn't support 4g which I use. Thanks though. Any others?

Search it on the market, or use ADW Launcher, as far as using it goes, you'll figure it out quite easily by yourself.
Edit: when you press the home button it'll ask if you wanna use Sense or whichever other launcher you have, press the check box, then choose the launcher you want.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=725328&page=45
You don't need cm6 u can use snt sence based rom and if u search calk. Has a flashable.zip that u can use to remove sence but not have any of the setbacks of cm6 ie. No 4g....and then use launcherpro and u can customize it to basically look any way u want..the best in my opinion. Then just go to settings/ applications/manage applications and "clear defaults" on the home screen. And use launcherpro....pm me for any questions if u have them.

You're going to pay that much anyways. You might as well save yourself the god-awful battery life for some moderately faster data speeds.
I've been using LauncherPro Plus on my unrooted (but probably not for much longer) Evo. Take some time to go through all the settings and look around the dev's web site. It's worth the investment of time.

Spoken like someone who doesn't realize 4G in Atlanta is still in testing/beta phase and won't be fully available until Dec/Jan. I'm in Baltimore and we are another 4G test city. I can download at speeds that rival Comcast cable modems in this area with minor battery life differences. In fact, my 4G tethering is my only source of home internet connection right now and I'm happy with it.
So, to answer the OP... Go to Sprint and look at their lists of testing cities. If you aren't in one of them you can't use 4G anyway so you can switch to CM6.1
if you are in a 4G city, then I suggest either the Virus-Rom (10/27 edition) with LauncherPro or a ROM that is designed to minimize sense:

There's definitely a nice selection of Kernels and ROM's available, take a look at the development section, read through some of the features of the different ones available, and see if you find one you'd like to try.
In the end, whether you keep the phone or return it for a Nexus, is all up to you... none of us can really answer this for you, because we all have different wants and needs in our phones.
And fwiw, software side of this phone can be easily modified/customized, so if you're happy with the hardware, then perhaps you should look into the software customization.

A good tip to remember...if you do go the custom ROM route, some have no journaling. If you choose one of those, make sure you power down phone completely and don't let battery die or you will get force closes out the arse. If this my be an issue for you, get a ROM with journal on or flash the journal on mod after flashing the ROM.

Probably a dumb question, but can I root and install a rom w/o going on a computer?

Syndicate Rom. It's absolutely awesome and very few bugs with almost all features working that I have noticed. Turns the Epic into the EPIC!!!!
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Go with SyndicateROM Frozen. The 1.1 version needs updating ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1091680 ) on the ClockworkMod. The 1.2 version ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131544 ) requires the latest ClockworkMod ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1115999 ). You need to flash modem to EC05 with Odin.
What I did was flashing modem to EC05, put the first CWM on the phone, then installed SynROM Frozen 1.1. After that, I updated the CWM, then updated to 1.2. I think the 1.2 is not full package (?) and upgrade from the 1.1 (?). Rodderik will update the 1.2 version with latest CWM. You can either wait for that update or continue with the steps that I did toward the 1.2 version.
Edit - SynROM Frozen 1.1 comes with ClockworkMod included. When you get it installed, just update the ClockworkMod (what I did was using the flash method with Odin) then upgrade to 1.2 version.

You had it partially right. Hardware is paramount simply because you can replace the software with better software but you can't replace what drives it. Root your phone with the new purple CWM and then give the Syndicate rom a try. What kernel you choose for it depends on your phone since they each take to certain kernels differently. I am personally using the second to last version of the Genocide kernel and voltage control with great results.
Think of the rom as a car's body that you can choose to option and the kernel as its engine.
I prefer Go Launcher over Launcher Pro and Handcent over all the others available.
If you want incredible battery life download an app called DataSwitch by TomatoX.
Make sure to enable journaling too.

I thought the same thing when I first started using tw... If your taking about the launcher I won't argue. But the rest of tw is pretty good. Built in task manager that clears ram, the dialer is dope. Contacts list is very functional, U can swype right on a name to call our left to txt. Also easy to navigate if u have alot of contacts. Hold your finger on the right in portrait mode to jump through letters, than if, lets say you know alot of T's when u get to T, slide your finger to the left and you can sort by the second letter (feel free to say thanks). If your in to facebook the buddies now and whatever other things are built in to the tw launcher (though if u change launchers you lose those widgets) activities in contacts links your fb friends, the... Does... And u can... With... And so on and so on and so on... theres alot to learn that u wrong in a few days... I've had mine since release day and I just found out... Yesterday... long story short, u only get one chance to trade ur phone in. Use the whole 30 days before u decide
P.s. u can change your screen brightness by long pressing the notification bar and sliding left to right. But u gotta have auto brightness turned off (thanks ↓)

I've been running this for a couple days now. And its freaking awesome. One of the more original roms that are around. I really like the toggles in the notification. I typically use Pete's ROMs, because I like the vanilla experience. I've heard some good things about this ROM though, so I'm considering it. How "vanilla" is it?
As a gauge, I think CM7 is far too "bloated". No hate, just personal preference.

i9020A - SAMOLED GSM with ATT's 3g bands.
i9023 - SLCD GSM sold in some European countries.
D720 - SAMOLED CDMA and WiMAX for Sprints 3g and 4g networks. The D720 is the only Nexus S model to carry the 4G tag as its the only nexus s with 4g.
