How to get Unlimited dataplan from AT&T? - Networking

I am planning to upgrade to Galaxy S II. Before this i was no not having any dataplans on my previous phones.
Is there any way to get $30 unilimited data plan with the phone.
Note: I an presently not having any data plan so cannot be grandfathered into

Nope! Unless you already have unlimited data with AT&T which means they will Grandfather your unlimited data plan.

that loophole doesnt work anymore?

If your referring to the iPhone 2G loophole, it still works. It's worked for almost a year... AT&T is KINDA slow.

I guess they dont care since they started throttling?

How would I go about doing this? I have a Skyrocket at the moment, but I also have an iPhone 2g at my disposal.... I used to have the unlimited data plan but took it off since my phone broke.

if i could get the loophole working i would go for a gs2 or GN

I just got the 15 non-smart phone unlimited data plan speeds of 3-6.5DL and 1-2UL.
I used 13.2GB and no Text or any thing. I just got a RAZR and was able to get unlimited.

I got lucky. I was on Alltel w/ unl. data before ATT bought them out in my area.
Tethering with unlimited data FTW.

I'm not sure of the exact way, but there's a thread on the Atrix forum on how to do it.
One requirement, the SIM card that's going to be put into the iPhone 2G could NEVER have been activated on an iPhone, if it was, you'll need to get another SIM card.

I have a Blackberry Bold now and i used to have an Iphone 3GS
Ok. I had and I-Phone 3GS and now i have the limited 200 megabyte data plan. I have an I-Phone 2G at my disposal can i do the loophole and will it work? And After I change to my I-Phone 4GS that I renew this January will I still have my unlimited plan?

[Q] Iphone data plan on Tilt 2

I got a great deal for a used Iphone and have been using it for the last week. I had to switch data plans to the iphone only but I love my Tilt 2 and would like to use both phones but inserting my sim card into my Tilt 2 will only let me use voice plan but no data. Any apps out there to fool att in thinking I am using the iphone when I am really using the Tilt 2 so i can get data.
Instead of using the MediaNet connection, change the Tilt2 to use wap.cingular and it will be invisible to the network.

MediaNet IS wap.cingular, it's the APN. AFAIK, ATT only has two, and the other is for Paying Thether users.
Hm, I have a similar concern as well.
Currently I use a tilt 2, but my friend has an old 3GS that he doesn't use. I have a grandfather plan of unlimited data under tilt2, but I plan on playing with both.
Does anyone know if I inserted my Sim into the iphone, if it would mess with my data plan.

K

Actually, it isn't. I created a new connection using the wap.cingular as my connection and then set it as my default connection for all usage. Now, when I log onto my AT$T account online I no longer see my phone or am able to access any info about (minutes/data used, etc.). If I switch back to MediaNet the phone miraculously reappears in my account. Something about accessing the network directly using wap.cingular changes how the network sees the user.

It will definitely mess up your plan. ATT will read the IMEI number on the phone as being an iPhone, and they will switch you to the iPhone plan. Furthermore, not completely sure but I think that once they take a grandfathered plan off your account, you can't get it back. So I wouldn't mess with this, and risk losing the unlimited data plan.

Figured so! Thanks! It's not a big deal to me as I have an itouch as well. WifiRouter + Tilt 2 + itouch, I would take over iphone anyday! (takes away all the programs that only require wifi problems away for one!)

I am still using the unlimited $15 data plan I originally got with my RAZR V3. Updated to an Incite and now the TP2 (both bought off Craig's List) and they still haven't changed my data plan to a required Smartphone plan.

Are those phones ATT branded, or not (seems like at least the Incite would be)? ATT seems to be pretty good at picking up the IMEI numbers for their branded phones. But mostly have no way of knowing the IMEI numbers for non-ATT subsidized devices.
I've read of some users on the ATT forum of having their data plan changed the same day, after inserting their SIM into an iPhone that they got from a friend, etc.
Both are AT$T-branded phones. I don't know about iPhones, but they can't change your plan without your permission or without you changing your contract. Changing phones does not qualify as a change of contract since the contract is for service, not phones. Every time I call in for something they try to get me to switch my plan, but I tell them I don't want to lose my grandfathered unlimited plan. They tell me I'm not supposed to be on it with the phone I'm using, but they are powerless to do anything until I either change it myself or upgrade my phone through AT$T and sign a new contract. Not going to happen anytime soon as I'm very happy with my Tilt2.
My wife & I have been with AT&T for near of 7 years now, and we are on the grandfathered unlimited data plans for both my tilt 2 and her *gulp* iphone4. We recently had a house guest, and we activated my wife's old iphone 3g. It too was instantly put on the grandfathered plan, as well as the rest of our family plan.
Adding a line does not "qualify" with AT&T as a contractual change UNLESS you buy a new phone. If your recycling an older phone, or you out right bought another one from some place else.

WiFi Router requires a cell data connection, and allows you to share it with other devices. How does that help in this case???

AT&T's 4G policies revealed. Will you drop ATT?

As per android Centrals Findings today,
According to the memo, the data tiers for 4G are the same as the 3G plans, namely $15 for each 200 MB or 2 GB for $25.00 (with $10 per GB overage). This means unlimited data in no longer an option, because you will have to change plans. We have no idea how this will affect customers with unlimited data grandfathered in who buy a phone off-contract and just drop their SIM card in, but I would imagine AT&T can tell with a little bit of auditing.

Nevermind, corrected
We can keep our existing plans and be grandfathered in.

Lol @ AT&T. Instead of attracting customers after losing the iPhone, they scare off existing ones. First $500 for Atrix dock, now the stupidly overprives $25/2GB data.
And that after the first Atrix reviews that showed that AT&T's "4G" is actually slower than their 3G. Oh yeah, awesome upgrade.
Rephrasing the famous phrase.. "Enough is enough. I've HAD IT with these MOTHERF***ING policies on this MOTHERF***ING AT&T."
So far it's either VZW or TMo for me. Since I travel a lot, most likely TMo with their unlim data plan, when Pyramid comes out.
i've been in contact with at&t.
they have stated that i can bring my grandfathered unlimited data plan over along with a new 2 year contact agreement if i decide to get the atrix.
if i want to tether, i would need to change my data plan.
this is from an online chat. and who knows, maybe this policy will change in the upcoming days.
i have seen this mentioned on a number of other forums. apparently grandfathered plans are fine.
so nothing really changes...
Androidandme is reporting (I'd link directly, but can't do it yet) that an AT&T rep has contacted them to clarify the 4G policy:
We were just contacted by a representative from AT&T who saw our post about the leaked 4G policy memo, and wanted to clarify a very important point about their new 4G plans. I quote:
Customers who currently have an unlimited plan can upgrade to a 4G device and keep their unlimited plans.
They did not dispute the validity of the leaked memo, but they were kind enough to tell us a part of the story that the original leak missed. So put away those pitchforks. Thanks for the clarification AT&T!

So, yeah: no need to panic.
I wasn't lucky enough to be grandfathered into the unlimited plan. I currently have the $15 200mb for my Samsung Captivate. Assuming I upgrade to the Atrix, am I going to have to pay an additional $15 to get 200mb of 4g, making the total for data $30 for 400mbs?

I couldn't agree more! I'm so glad that I overpaid for unlimited back when I didn't use much data. Still, $90/mo for two lines of unlimited data and unlimited messaging is a lot, so glad that AT&T announced unlimited mobile to mobile so I can drop my minutes!
I'm never leaving AT&T until another carrier gets real unlimited data. Good things cell execs underestimated how much data we can use!

I've been grandfathered in on the unlimited plan for quite some time now. When I got my Captivate last July, the sales rep tried to convince me I HAD to change my data plan to the new pricing scheme. Thankfully, it ain't happen.
Even if you went somewhere else, almost all the operators are moving to this type of plan.
2Gigs of data is quite alot, unless you are using it for your main internet connection for your house. I've been on the 2Gig plan for about a year now, and I rarely go above 600-700 meg with lots of audio streaming (sirius/xm, pandora) and Uverse TV to go, and some tethering from time to time.

Because, I have a regular unlimited plan for $10 a month, and would like to keep it lol.

Negative. Featurephone/dumbphone unlimited data doesn't transfer over to smartphones. The only way I could see to get around that is to buy a phone off contract and pop your SIM card in it. You'd probably have to hack the phone to have it report as something else, though, otherwise ATT would catch it.

ATT Forcing HSPA+/4G Data ???

http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-ph...ls.jsp?q_package=sku5100371&_requestid=618639
DataPro 2GB for HSPA+/4G Smartphone includes 2GB. Once 2GB is exceeded, an additional 1GB is automatically provided at a rate of $10 for each additional 1GB provided. Unused data usage does not carry over. For HSPA+/4G SmartPhones ONLY.
ATT is selling this type of data plan with the new ATRIX, what kind of impact could this have on us UNLIMITED 'Grandfathered' users that were thinking about buying the phone outright?
if i put my 3G card in, am i gonna get hosed? is ATT going to automatically try and switch my data plan to the 'required' plan for the 4G phone? even though i bought it outright? am i possibly going to have to fight to get the 'GFD' plan back after?
i know its all speculation at this point because the actual phone isnt out yet, but my gut tells me we might not like the answer...
I was wondering about the same thing, but I don't think we have to worry right now, I intend to get it then use it and in a month check, should they mess with me, I'll pull the information straight from their website with a datestamp that I printed stating that Grandfathered in gets to keep their plan. It really would be as simple as letting me keep it or I'll take my company off AT&T.

I was able to "upgrade" to the Atrix and i checked the option that said "I do not want to make changes to my data plan" since i am grandfathered in as truly "unlimited".
I dont expect to see any changes once i put my SIM card in. They relaxed their "grandfather" clause a little recently and im guessing what i experienced is exactly that. before they FORCED you to change your plan. Now you have an option.
For people with unlimited plans, you can still keep it, it becomes an option on the data plan picker that only someone with an unlimited plan can see. And yes it is 4g ready. And no it doesn't cost any more money.
/thread
It is not a problem at all.
All you have to do is swap the sim. cards and you are good to go. Your plan does not change at all and AT$T isn't going to penalize you.
They are losing 16% of their customers do to the iphone switch.

I have a tangential question.
I know going over 2GB adds 1GB for $10 on Data Pro. But what if you exceed the 150mb on the Data lite? Does it auto bump you to 2GB and Data Pro for the month?
If you have the unlimited data theres a new HSPA+ version of the unlimited plan that your moved to
in regards to the $15 plan its actually 200mB, not 150, if you go over your charged another 15 for another 200, if you go over that your billed another 15 for 200 more and so forth
Lastly if your buying a device like the Atrix your a moron to think 200MB for an entire month is going to cut it, in my opinion that plan shouldnt even be offered
Hehe, so they charge you another $15 for 200MB but on the other plan its $10 for 1GB? Terrible.
I agree with you a 200MB plan likely wont get you anywhere unless you are covered by wi-fi everywhere you go and otherwise don't use data almost at all.
Also, how does tehthering work if you have a grandfathered unlimited plan? And could you not just root and use thethering without having the tetherming plan? Say if you were on the 2GB plan.
Ive never quite understood the covered everywhere by wifi don't have wifi driving or everywhere that you travel, unless you never leave the house
If you want tethering, officially through ATT you have to get the 45 dollar 4gb plan, and lose the unlimited
An app like PDAnet would be a solution for tethering to keep the unlim plan and you dont even need to be rooted to run it
I still have my unlimited data and my Inspire

lol you're absolutely insane if you believe that to be true. Every business analyst website worth its money on the internet is saying Verizon didn't make much of an impact with the release of the iPhone4. They sold a lot of iPhones...but an estimated 90% of them were to people that were already Verizon subscribers. The 1 million iPhones that they keep quoting was *ONLY* to pre-orders made by Verizon customers.
Also, it has absolutely nothing to do with this topic. AT&T already said before the phone was announced they would move grandfathered unlimited plans ahead with new contracts (same thing happened with their last launch).
I'm glad to hear that AT&T is allowing us to keep our grandfathered unlimited plans. I've been planning on moving up to Android with the Atrix but was dreading losing my unlimited data plan that I've got on my current iPhone 3G.
If everything works out like everyone here is saying then it looks like I'll get to have my cake and eat it too.

FALSE. I got my wife the inspire 4g, and yes, the rep changed her from unlimited data(captivate) to unlimited 4G data(inspire, atrix etc.). So yes, you do have to make a switch to "4G." Try taking your sim card straight from your captivate, or any other 3g phone and put it in the atrix, you can make calls and text, but no data connection.

Did you get the Inspire 4G before AT&T relaxed their "Unlimited Grandfather in clause"? If o, that may have been your problem. Recently (2 months or so) they have said that if you have real unlimited plan and upgrade, you can keep your plan. You dont have to change. This is different to what they were saying when the iPHone 4 came out. Get iPhone 4 and you NEED to change your plan.
Also in regards to just putting in your SIM card into an Atrix, Do you have one? Did you try this? Or are you basing this on your Inspire experience?
No dice on keeping "unlimited" plan!
My current ATT Blackberry Data plan is "unlimited" and shows up like this on the Premiere site:
GPRS WAP/BBRY UNLTD DOM - BBUB
I called to confirm that I would be able to keep my n=unlimited plan and they told me that it would be changed to the 2gb-$25 4G plan immediately upon power up of the Atrix... AND that I could not go back to the unlimited plan even if I return the Atrix within 30 days!
Is the above one of the "grandfathered" plans? And if so, how is everyone else here managing to keep their plan?

[Q] AT&T trying to screw me on my data plan

I had an iPhone4 before I got my atrix and I had unlimited data on my iphone, so I bought my atrix without a contract in order to keep that data plan. I received the following text message this morning:
Did you know an eligible data plan is required for your 4G smartphone? Pls call 611 to select a plan and establish your 4g data connection today
Right now i am beyond angry because it seems like they are just trying to take away my unlimited data. The reason I say this is because the iPhone 4 does the handshaking to get true HSUPA and my phone does not. Therefore I am paying for a plan with a service that doesnt even exist, where my original plan (for the iphone 4) actually covers HSUPA. Does anyone know a way around this? I definitely dont want to lose my unlimited data. Is there anyway to get out of my contract? I would just as soon switch carriers before giving into paying for a crappy data plan (no offense to anyone who has the plan, you just didnt have the option ) on a crappy carrier.
Thanks for the help in advance.
go on their website att.com
you can actually select an unlimited 4g plan i m pretty sure
pick it and report back
I switched from iPhone unlimited to Android unlimited - they will let you do that. But you will not get HSUPA until the phone is updated.

They don't want the unlimited plans out there. The are going to force all non I-phone users to go to tiered plans. Once they take it off, you will not be able to get them to give it back either. If you don't go with the tiered plan, when u use the non iphone device, they will throttle your throughput at 2 gb. It is a horrible decrease in speed. Still have unlimited, only it is extremely frustrating when you hit the 2 gb limit. Remeber, in AT&T's eyes, it's not about you.

I've been using my old iPhone unlimited data plan since last year when I picked up the Nexus One. I am still using my unlimited data plan with my Motorola Atrix. My speeds aren't throttled (except HSUPA which is NOT due to me being on an unlimited plan) and I have gone above 2GB several times since switching to Android and have not been charged for it, penalized, or had my speeds throttled.
OP: AT&T will let you keep your unlimited iPhone data plan for your Atrix. I have it, many others on this forum have it.

I have it, many others on this forum have it.

it's most likely because you didn't switch your current data plan to a non-iphone smartphone plan. they are different plans in the way that they handle data. you can keep your unlimited when switching across data plan types (i.e. i went from BB data plan to regular smartphone unlimited). but since you didn't switch it over, they flagged you since your IMEI gives up that you are no longer using an iPhone.

The cap for unlimited is 5GB, not 2GB.
like others have said they will switch you to an unlimited non iphone data plan. same thing happened to me. the rep said "oh we dont offer the unlimited plan anymore" I told her that I should be grandfathered in since I had the unlimited plan before, she put me on hold, then 5 min later she came back and said i was right and put me on the unlimited non iphone plan

I'm sorry but I keep laughing about this. It's just funny it is being referred to as "non-iphone plan".
That should be Apple's new slogan:
"Because if you don't have an iPhone, you have a non-iPhone"
I have unlimited...
When I went to the AT&T store last week to get my Atrix, I specifically asked them if we would have to get a new plan for 4G, or could we keep our grandfathered unlimited plan from my iPhone. She told me there was no extra charge, and gave me a 4G sim card to boot! I am not in a 4G area, so I won't know if I will get charged or not, but the store rep told me that even if I used 4G, I wouldn't have to pay any other extra fees.
Unlimited data plans are also for 3g ONLY! Not sure if that was mentioned. If you lucky enough to live in an area where H+ is live you have to go to the 2gb or 4gb data plan to get those speeds, which right now are barely faster than 3g download and the upload is horrible.
You also didnt have to buy the phone out of contract. I bought mine with my upgrade for $200 and was grand fathered over too my 3g data plan which is called the Smart phone unlimited.
Verizon with there 17-20mb download on there LTE network is looking pretty good now. But thats still not even live in my area so it doesnt madder.

Well the OP stated that he had an iPhone before. If he had a BB before, I would have said a "non-BB data plan".

You're in incorrect in that. Its unlimited regardless of network connection speed...

Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I went to. Costco and the Guy there kept me on my unlimited plan. I even called att to make sure and the Rep put me on hold so she could talk to the manager and they said I'm allowed to grandfather my plan.
If you guys are having trouble, ask the Rep to talk to the manager.

I have no idea what that "4G" sim is going to do for you considering it won't be needed until AT&T rolls out LTE. The so-called "4G" that the Atrix uses (HSDPA+) is still a 3G technology and 3G sim cards work on it.
I just checked my bill and it says that my current data and messaging plan is set to expire on 04/07/2011. I can get a Smartphone Unlimited data and 1500 messaging for the same price. Haven't made any change yet. Will call AT&T Monday and see what happens.

No data plan needed on AT&T.

With AT&T, the nexus 4 unlocked will not require a data plan because AT&T does not have that phone imei number in their system or database. I used an unlocked nexus s before with no data, so this will be the same. Even if you want data it'll be only $15 unlimited HSPA+ or $20 unlimited data and text since it'll be considered a standard phone.
I'm on AT&T's HTC One X without data plan. You would just call them with a dumb phone saying you sold your smartphone, and they will take off the data plan for ya. Once they take it off, you would insert the sim back in to your phone.

But if they ever did add them they could detect the IMEI then they would change your plan. I do see on their website it is technically possible to do this and comes out to 70 a month at the cheapest, but is it really DC-HSPA+ or some downgraded version of it?

They do reactivate your data plan but from what I seen its pretty rare. I have some friends running ATT without data plan and they haven't activated a data plan for them yet.

no no i was wondering is it possible to use the 15 dollar unlimited feature phone data option? If i was to activate it ona feature phone first then put it in my sim. When do you think they would add the smartphone one. But I will test the tmobile prepaid sim i got in a tester phone I have first before in it because Im on sprint need to test my network options lol.
Why not use $45 Straight Talk unlimited talk/text/data (which uses AT&T) and not fuss with AT&T at all?
