nasty "google search on ics"
latest kangs have option in the homescreen to disable it.
Nice explanation as usual.
But... why? This disables the physical search button and leaves a blank unusable gap under the top bar. Is there a way to extend the usable grid upward once the search bar is gone?

just a personal choice, i dnt use search much so for me this bar on the top is a waste ..
Also I worry about burn in the search is going to cause on our amoleds.

is there burn in on your notification bar? or your menu icon (which is on you screen the same amount of time)?
if not, why would you worry about search bar burn in?
if so, why dont you switch to a non amoled phone?
People need a video for selecting "disable" in the Google app setting?

There is a reason google took away the am/pm on the status bar and changed the color to black: to stop burn in. It's a real issue and people should be wary of it.

Is there a mod I can flash to remove the clock on the status bar. Most people have widgets and I just don't even seem the point of it being on the status bar anymore.

I can understand that, but on amoled displays it's nice to at least have the option to disable it. I'm already experiencing (slight) burn in. Download screen test from the market, make the screen either all white or all blue and you'll probably see it on yours too. Technically it's burn out not burn in (the blue sub pixels burn out first) but it looks the same.
Certainly not a big deal but I'm a video engineer so it bugs me more

I too also use the clock on the status bar annoying that it is now gone in bansai:-( I am going to try to get it back

I use the Launcher Pro that lets me hide the notification bar whenever is not needed. It actually saves the screen from burn "out".
I wish the notification bar only is shown when something is new or a warning otherwise it's just a wasted real estate on the screen.

Since this is going to be my first phone with on screen buttons which I consider a stupid idea I am wondering what can we go with this back bar embeded at the bottom of the screen, Can we make it smaller?, will it be removed in games? Can we add extra buttons or ever widgets to it? Maybe ever make it pages so when you swipe over it it will reveal a rss feed or something. Any ideas on what can be done to make it helpful rather than a hinderance

Once custom roms start rolling out you will be able to change the DPI of the bar.

Using CM nightly (18th).
I have a pattern lock and removed the side widgets with Lockscreen Policy. Last thing to go would be the circular dots at the bottom that are part of the Google Now swipe.
On a separate note, is there a reason you can pull down the clock to expose a blank area underneath?

The space is for when you have multiple clocks for different time zones.
if u fill ur lock screen with widgets, u press that to bring up the unlock settings.
You could use an app like widgetlocker or go locker. They'd probably have the option to hide the google now circle.

WidgetLocker does one of two things. It either leaves the Home, Back, and Recents buttons there, or, if you enable root helper, it will replace those with the GNow Circle. No option for a black bar.

In hybrid settings, set the launcher's nav bar color and transparency to match the lock screen color n transparency. It takes some tweaking to get the right color but you'll find it soon enough.
I'm using #55000000 but you may need to tweak it a bit depending on your wallpaper
Or you could take a screenshot of your lock screen, find the color code for it using the color picker in Photoshop and then enter that value in the launchers nav bar color picker.

Not sure I'm seeing what you're seeing. The dotted circle is still in your screenshot.
Yea but its not within a black bar. The wallpaper extends to the bottom. And its just one possible way to mask it and make it look nice since I'm not too interested in getting rid of it completely anyway.

Im REALLY annoyed by that ugly ATT 4g icon, the inconsistent sizes, the information overload that fills the top of the screen basically. I just moved to android with this S4, previously I was a happy iPhone user. Is there any simple way to replace/theme the status bar icons? and for the love of god can I just turn them off without having to disable the services?
Im rooted, running Nova, I've tried obsidian menus bar, doesnt work and clearly would be a bandaid anyway.
Id rather not go trolling around in the systemui.apk, but if thats the only way and its safe to OTA afterwards then Ill do that. I just really hate the design of the status bar.

I'm like you. I very much prefer as minimalist a status bar as possible, so I made icons so my status bar looks like this with everything enabled:
Obviously, I never have all those icons active. Usually just the battery, signal, wifi, and alarm are active, but I enabled them all so you have an idea of what they look like. I posted all the icons in this thread if you'd like to use them:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2275858
Also, there's a mini tutorial about how to cluster the signal strength and signal type/in-out icons, because I think it's an absurd waste of space to use TWO icon spaces just to basically show you have cell phone signal and how strong it is.
Basically, I understand your pain. The clutter that comes with the stock status bar is absurd.
My nav bar is burning into my screen, just like all the Razr Ms I saw in the Verizon store.
So, is there a way to make the nav bar transparent without removing it? I want to stay on the stock rom (but I am unlocked/rooted).
Thanks!

I know it's possible on CM based ROMs and AOKP has an autohide feature for the nav bar. However, I'm not sure on the stock ROM. You might want to check out Xposed Framework. It can be used to theme a stock ROM, without having to mess with .apk's or anything. I know that are a lot of customization modules out there for Xposed.
Somewhere in your System Settings, depending on what ROM you are using, you should find a setting called Navigation Bar. Click setting and there should be towards the bottom of the screen an option for Navigation Bar Transparency, Turn percentage down to zero. Also if you choose to use PIE Controls your Navigation Bar defaults to hidden and then when you toggle back to Navigation Bar or close PIE, your Navigation Bar appears.

Yeah, mine is very noticeable when playing a video or something where the buttons are not on the screen.
Man, the ones in the Verizon stores when I got mine in February had the circle widgets burned in really bad.
These burns don't even make sense. Old CRTs would burn because they're shooting electrons at the glass and if they sat long enough shooting and the same place they would literally burn into the glass. LEDs are just lights, I really want to know why it does this.

If I recall, this burn in is not really burn-in per say, but that the back-lights behind the pixels are burning and decaying at different rates. Since the buttons are always white, and the area around them always dimmed, the 'burn-in' is a lot more noticeable.
