Rooting a D2 - Droid 2 General

Ok,
I feel like a total noob. I'm a droid incredible owner and could tell you everything about rooting and modding an Incredible. My wife owns a D2. Since our counteract is nearing the end, I would like to root it for her. This way if I mess it up, or more likely, she messes it up, she can upgrade.
I have done some reading, but HTC and Moto are VERY different. I need a few pointers before I begin. I've read about SBF. I don't even know what that is. So I'm a total noob when it comes to Moto.
I can tell you with my Dinc, I was able to download unrevoked on my Mac, and it basically did the work for me. It took about 5 minutes, and boom it was rooted. I have CWR installed and can flash any Rom/Kernel I want. Same thing on my Nook color. Been back and forth with CM7 and MIUI for it.
Basically, I need a beginners guide to rooting the D2, with all the vocab defined for me. Can anyone spell it out for me or point me in the right direction? I really just want to give her Titanium backup and wireless tether for her work iPad.
It is updated with the latest Gingerbread OTA, and I know with the Dinc, if you weren't rooted with S-off before the OTA, it is now impossible to Root it. From what I read, that doesn't appear to be the case with the D2

I use a older 1click root app called z4root which works fine on froyo. If shes on gingerbread theres a newer app called superoneclick, which can currently be found on xda's home page. Not sure how it works exactly but it does work for the d2. Good luck hope this helps.

I'll have to check it out. She is on Gingerbread. Does z4root give you permanent root? Or does it revert back after a reboot? I'm curious if superoneclick is the same.

Here is the best way to root the phone, I've used it at least 15 times by now.

Don't pay attention to the part about flashing CM7.

No need to go through the headache of SBFing just to root if he's on a clean install of Ginger Bread. On top of that he will have to set the phone up again and re-install all the old apps. That said, the OP may want to read up on SBFing just so he's clear on how it works.
Just google Droid 3 one click root and browse the rootzwiki result. I'd link it but I don't have enough posts yet.
Pete's Tools is literally as easy as it gets. Download the program, hook your phone to the PC though USB, select charge only, run the program, then click root. It literally is a one-click root.

IIRC, you don't need to SBF while doing this method. Only if you're downgrading to 2.3.2. Otherwise ADB doesn't care if you're clean or not.

SBFing was the first thing it mentioned on that link so I was thinking it was a necessary part of that method. Just didn't want the OP to have to mess with that unnecessarily.

Downgraded from rooted 2.2 to 2.1 and cannot root anymore.

I've read over the forums quite a few times and am stumped. For some reason i cannot get rooted again after SBF flashing to 2.1. I've used the one click root program and while it says the root was successful, i go into adfree, titanium backup, and wifi tether and all tell me that i am not rooted. Super permissions doesn't seem to work either.
I've flashed my phone six times and have had the same results, so i was wondering if anyone else had this problem or could help me out. I just want to root and get back to 2.2 again, but i don't see why I'm having such difficulties when I've had success before in the past. I'm trying to give all the information i can, but there isn't really much to it. I followed all the steps in the HOW TO downgrade 2.2 to 2.1 link in this very forum.
If anyone can help me or tell me whats going on, I'd be in their debt forever.

Six times? Did you try the 7th????
http://alldroid.org/Default.aspx?tabid=40&g=posts&m=5164#5164
But anyways...did you try to root in manually instead of doing it with one click?
Ok the seventh time was in fact the charm. I just upgraded to 2.2 without root and then SBF flashed to 2.1 again and now when i root, it actually takes and adfree tells me im rooted and super permissions kicks in. I could just not figure out what was going on because it didn't make any sense. It still doesn't, but hey problem solved so i'm not gonna speculate. Anyways thanks for the time.

[Q] Droid X 2.2 Rooted....now what?

Hey I know this is a noob question but I just rooted my 2.2 X and I want to install custom ROMs but have no idea where to start. I already downloaded Rom Manager and Titanium backup but don't know where to go from there. Total noob with all the lingo also. The internet isn't very helpful in this and I don't want to brick my phone. Any step-by-step instructions on what to do next? Thanks!
It was much easier on my nexus one I don't even bother with installing custom roms on the droid x
Only thing I do is rename all the bloat packages to .bak and use launcher pro
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App

agreed, plus get "wireless tether for root users" from the market.
add a theme
adding a rom is like having someone do the renaming and adding a theme at once for you.
o and you cant brick your phone, unless you did the Over The Air update then try and flash the 2.1 sbf if on 2.2 only use 2.2

Do not use the 2.1 SBF to re-flash your phone.
If you are not doing any 'mods', this will never be an issue. The SBF is used to re-flash the phone to an 'out of the box' state and can generally save you from file system mistakes, etc.
However, the 2.2 OTA made subtle changes to the bootloader that prevents the 2.1 flash from working. It has been reported to 'brick' phones.
Not to fear though, a partial 2.2 SBF has been released. If something bad happened, you could most likely use that SBF to recover. However, since it isn't a full SBF, there are still some possibilities (however minor) of messing things up bad enough that you couldn't recover.

If you have ROM manager, you should have access to the most frequently used ROM's for the Dx. I recommend installing Koush's bootstrap recovery so you can make a backup of you phone in the event A) something doesn't go right, B) you don't like the ROM/Theme and want to go back.
I personally have the Dx with the OTA 2.2. update, rooted, and using the BigDxSerenity Red theme:

Bignadad, elecga, and acidbath are some great contributors to XDA and their work is amazing. Definitely recommend checking out the thread above and reading through it. If you use their stuff, be sure to give them some thanks! They do a great job of contributing to the android community.
as long as you are rooted and have purchased titanium backup you can do whatever you want really. i would also purchase root explorer. also make sure you are renaming files to .bak or .old or whatever your choice may be that way if you mess something up you can just restore it and not go online to forums and say hey does anyone have the blockbuster apk file (just an example)? you can use the wireless tether as well it works great if you are in the car with your pc or some other place not offering wireless. also when you download and install rom manager, go to the market and download the droid x bootstrapper and install the clockwork recovery. you must have both bootstrapper and rom manager to easily and quickly install clockwork from rom manager. so you spend about 10 or so dollars and you can do whatever you want to your phone for the most part. also another way to not brick your phone would be to make a post here in the forums if youre thinking about doing something crazy or unorthodox. other then that enjoy the phone

To root or not to root?

So over the past few days I have been doing alot of research on rooting my phone. I have watched videos and read almost every thread concerning it. I understand the advantages and disadvantages of it. I have never done this before, but I am more than competent enough to follow the directions. I have taken it as far as using visionary and temp rooting my phone. I have a file manager downloaded, and a terminal emulator downloaded. If I go through with it I plan on following the directions in the thread using the gfree method. Ok, with that being said, my only real question is..if I follow the directions, obviously making sure my phone is charged as well, what are the chances of me bricking my phone? Is it incompetence that will create a brick? Or is it something that following the directions correctly will easily avoid?
just do it. -nike
follow directions and youll be fine. thats what i did
Yeah, it's pretty hard to brick your phone. One word of caution though: if you decide to flash the engineering bootloader, screwing up that command WILL brick your phone. Check it, re-check it, and do it over again just to be sure you've typed it properly.
Yea, not trying to get that in depth into it, just want to run some STABLE custom ROM's. I have spent the past 2 hours setting up adb and getting my phone to accept commands. Starting to get comfortable with that. I am really new to all of this, so I am trying to learn as much as I can before I jump into it.
UPDATE: Just need a couple more people to chime in on this. Like I said, I have ADB setup, my phone is accepting commands (rebooted over adb to test) I have visionary, I can temp root with no problem. I have read over the instructions, and understand them fully. I am not going to flash the engineering bootloader, just want to permroot to flash custom rom's and delete bloatware and such. So just doing permroot, is there a chance I can brick my phone?
as long flash a revovery image. And dont mess with the radio file you should be okay.

Alright, thanks for the help, I am obviously a noob...Flashing the recovery is done right on the ROM Manager App right? And there is no way to accidentally mess with the radio?

yes it can be done with clockwork ROM manager.
And no the radio has to be done on purpose.

Thanks for the help, It took me 2 days but I grew a pair and did it. Followed the directions on the guide and worked perfectly. Deleted Visionary, rebooted into hboot and have S off, went into my terminal emulator and still have superuser access. Thanks again!

You really should flash the Engineering bootloader. It makes it harder to brick your device in the future.
It took a bunch of reading, but I rooted my phone and my wife's phone using the gfree method, and installed the engineering bootloader.
Then, a month or so later, I upgraded to CM7. CM7, while still beta, is tons better than the stock firmware. I was going to do Ice Glacier, but developement stopped on it, and ultimately I wanted to be on CM anyway.
Better battery life, tons more features, no reason to complain.
Just do it. TMO should make CM stock on these phones.

[Q] Extremely confused Droid X GB - Need Help

So I've searched around the net, and am not 100% sure what to do. Here is my situation.
I "rooted" my phone awhile ago, or so I thought, but now despite having superuser and trying to do the fix and update for it, it doesn't work, and no app can gain root access, however when I try to run droid easy root, it says i'm already rooted.
I'm running GB with build # 4.5.1_57_DX5-35 (if that helps).
All I want to do is re-root or whatever and install a rom (miUi specifically) over the default gingerbread motoblur one. I'm on a Mac btw and don't know much about this stuff...Any help is appreciated.

use the zergrush (aka doomlord) method posted in my signature, should fix you right up
edit: eww just saw where you said you were on a mac, not sure if this will work for the mac, i know that superoneclick also now uses the zergrush method. perhaps there is a mac version of that.
I'll try it out using VMware fusion and my XP partition...Hopefully it works. Might have some questions on the process if there aren't detailed instructions. Thanks.

Frustrated, want to reset.

Okay, quick rundown: I have a Droid X that was rooted and overclocked, loved it. Verizon pushed their OTA update and I lost root. Ever since then, the phone has been acting buggy (freezing, need to pull battery several times a day, etc), so I'm confident that was what caused it (other than rooting - and I used a 1-click method to do that - I have not messed around with anything on the phone, and I have very few apps - maybe a dozen or two). I have tried and tried to find a way to regain root access, with no success. I then tried to unroot, again with no success. I'm ready to just say "screw it" and start over fresh; however, all the tutorials I have found to re-flash my phone are from 2011 (at the latest), and I don't want to brick my phone because I used an outdated tutorial. So I turn to you guys for help.
No, I don't want to re-root. I can try and screw around with that in the future (possibly - I really only rooted because I wanted to overclock, just for the sake of saying "rooted and overclocked"). I tried the un-root guide I found on here (using pete's motorolla tools) with no success. I'm fairly tech savvy, but nowhere near the level of most of you.
Basically, I just want to be pointed in the direction of an easy way to flash my phone back to it's factory settings, as if it's never been opened.
Also, while I'm at it, is there a way to back up my apps on my computer? Most of my apps are free, but I'd rather not have to pay (again) for the ones I did have to buy.
I'm running a Droid X on verizon. Running 2.3.4. I just checked for system updates, and it says I'm up to date. If you need any more info from me, feel free to ask.
You can find the .621 SBF file you will need here:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/17934-602-sbf/
You will also need to download RSD Lite to flash the SBF file.
Note: RSD Lite can be found at the above link.
You can find the drivers you need in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1258599
Also, all apps that you have purchased can be redownloaded from the play store after you've returned to stock, at no extra charge.
Thanks. Where can I find a tutorial on how to flash it to stock?

They're all over the place. You just have to search a little, I recommend looking in YouTube for a video tutorial.
