I've just got a new S2. I thought my Desire was good but this is fantastic.
However an iPhone-owning friend took a look and said "the screen's not very white is it?" I compared it to his and he was right - very grey. But the brightness was set to auto, so I turned it up and it was a lot whiter. But then he said "it's very green". And there is a greenish tint.
So I compared it two two other (about 3 months old) S2s that people have at work (using the *#0*# tests).
And my screen is definitely inferior: less white and more off-colour. Yes I did check that the screen modes were the same (eg standard/dynamic/movie) and that the brightnesses were the same. None of the phones had screen protectors on.
I know sometimes there are differences in screens, often because they're sourced from more than one manufacturer. But I thought Samsung made these screens?
So in essence, the screen on my phone seems to be worse than others, and markedly less good than my pal's iphone - for which I will get no end of ribbing!
Is this a common trait? Am I seeing things? Should I return it?
Love the phone otherwise. FYI it's brand new on Virgin Mobile in the UK and is running 2.3.4.

Try updating to one of the 2.3.5 based roms and I would definitely recommend trying out supercurio's "Voodoo Screen" app from the market(combine this with the movie preset found in settings->display->screen mode) as well. Just compared my SGS2 to an iPhone 4S and I'm really glad I didn't make the switch, as while the latter does have an edge when it comes to screen resolution, the former more than makes up for it with its 4.3 inch super amoled plus display. The iPhone's browser was a little bit faster, and the camera better, but I still I preferred the SGS2. Once it gets ICS it'll be absolutely amazing.
No don't set the screen to the movie preset AND use Supercurio's app at the same time !
But You'r right set it to the movie preset the screen will be more color-respective
Supercurio's app is great although still in progress. I'm also used Screen Adjuster to compensate for the greenish hue (red is set to +2 and blue to +5.
I ran into another application yesterday here on xda that let's you adjust sharpness and hue... let me see if I can find it again.
Edit: this app. Haven't tried it yet. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1366280

Why not? Looks a lot better than it does on standard.
You have to understand that the screen technologies used in each phone is different.
The iPhone uses an IPS screen.
The Galaxy S II uses a Super AMOLED Plus screen. It's not very good at handling whites, but it has the advantage that it doesnt need any power to show black pixels (unlike the iPhone), so its more black and more efficient at showing blacks.
Great replies, thanks all.
Since posting stijnr, I've got Screen Adjuster on, and interestingly my settings aren't a million miles from yours, red +4, blue +6. One thing I do miss from the Desire is the optical track button - I'm finding adjusting things that need a little bit of input to be quite tricky on the touchscreen.
Toss3 you made me laugh, not intentionally I'm sure! I will flash a new rom at some point - god knows how many I got through on the Desire - but I will spend a few weeks appreciating this stock ROM! Best thing about Virgin Mobile is it's non-branded and as Samsung shipped it. Not even any logos on the case.
Good point kwazi on the different screen technologies. But that doesn't explain different S2s having different display characteristics. Anyway I'd rather have this larger screen - the iphone screen may be beautiful but it looks very... small these days for what is a premium handset.
I'll check out some other S2s in stores in the next couple of days. If this is what they're shipping I'll live with it. If it's a 50/50 chance of the other screen I might try my luck.
Most of the viewing on our smartphones involves looking at whites, webpages for example, NOT blacks. And the Iphone 4 displays superior whites than the Galaxy s II.
I've gotten to the point where I think I would be happier with an regular lcd screen.
While the tech is nice in Super Amoled Plus, the quality and consistency of the display that's being manufactured is all over the place.

You're comparing apples to oranges here. iPhone uses IPS technology, while Galaxy S 2 uses SAMOLED +. You're going to see differrnces between them. Personally, I wouldn't worry about the differences, or even see them as drawbacks; as each display has it's strengths and weaknesses. Industry standard resolution for most smartphones is 800x480, which is quite good on a screen size of 4" or larger.
Next time your friend pokes you about your display, remind him that his iPhone is still 3g device.

no, he's comparing apples and desserts, not oranges!
I compared SGS and SGSII with auto brightness and manual lowest setting.
SGS brightness with auto or lowest setting is at cca 50% brightness level on SGSII, I think Samsung sets brightness range quite down for saving battery life and users dont have to use Screen Filter app in the night
But imho auto brightness is low for me - at the edge of usability.
I remember when I first got this phone about 10 months ago, the greenish/blueish tint was so very much visible on the screen. Even when the screen is off, I can see a shade of blue on the reflection of the screen. But then it gradually "wear off" until the green tint disappear completely after about a week later. I don't know if it really disappear or just me being used to it. Or maybe after I update it to 2.3.4, 2.3.5, 2.3.6, I just can't tell. But I certainly feel it's not there anymore.
Guyz I bought a galaxy note last week...just out of the box i saw a yellowish tint all over the display basicaly from the bottom left.....
so i got an app screen adjuster
i installed then adjusted the blue at +5 and now 90% of the yellowish tint is gone..
soo i have to ask is it safe to use this app????
heres the link to the app Here!
Sure its safe to use but if your note is flawed from the factory then take it back ??

I use it to lower the contract to -40 as it fixes some of the black rendering issues. I also set the overall brightness down to 75% as it is just set too bright (I turn it off when outside).
I have never fiddled with the colour as my colour renders perfectly. I agree that if it is not rendering correctly, send it back for a replacement. It will likely only get worse.

interesting how it helps you to solve some black rendering issues, but not at all for me.
Yeah its awesome but lags my ICS ROM down
its awesome app ... removes black blocks completely on videos .... is it factory issue with my note .. as i think it should work correctly be default .... isnt it ? ....
For sure is a very good and safe app but better now that is brand new it s better to take it back....
I have observed the similar thing.
I have now bought 4 Notes for myself and my family members (Yeah I know, 4 people in family with Note ). My personal one manufactured in October and those bought recently (3 of them, all made in January 2012) have different colour reproduction.
The new ones have slightly warmer colours when you look dead on (with slight shift to blue when you look at it from bottom at extreme angles which is to be expected).
But straight on, the new Note has colour reproduction similar to my Galaxy Nexus. ITs slightly warm. Its definitely not the colour calibration as it remains same regardless the ROM I use. Its definitely not like traditional SAMOLED blueish display like my old Note or SGS2 which I had before that.
All 3 which are manufactured in Jan 2012 have same colours. All 3 bought from different stores few days apart. But I dont think its bad thing. It actually little warmer like Nexus and is more closer to real life colours. I know that many people prefer artificial looking, eye popping SAMOLED colours, but I am definitely not complaining.

Black colour blocking is universal as far as I know. All of the Notes I have seen have it with hardware accelerated video playback. Using software decoding using players like MX video player or MoboPlayer or BSPlayer solves the issue for now and there is already work under way to fix this issue. I dont think you need to return your phone for this as new one will most likely have same issue.
What I mentioned was regarding general colour reproduction of the screen. The new Notes have slightly warmer colours everywhere. Be it in home screen, browser, gallery or video.

No, it's not faulty. Color banding or black blocks are just artifacts introduced by developers or the video encoding process for the most part - the issue is generally not apparent on TFT display types since the LCD layer isn't able to block 100% of the light to show you a true 'black' pixel.
Good dithering can hide the problem somewhat, but on OLED displays it's more difficult since they are far better with contrast.
You could look at it one of two ways...
You have a superior display technology that the world just needs to catch up with.
Or you have a worse screen because it doesn't hide what other display types are incapable of rendering.
Take your pick : )

Thats a relief ... i was also thinking the same thing as , other colors looks quite nice on my note ... only issue is the blocky blacks which on less resolution videos are more visible .... however i was able to solve the issue using screen adjuster app by setting contrast to 55% ... at that it displays no blocky blacks at all ... just the screen gets an overlay of grey for pure blacks..... i can live with it ...
So I exchanged my first Nexus 7 because 1 dead pixel (build date 2013.10), got my second one with horrible multitouch problems and several dead pixels (build date 2013.08), my third one with multitouch problems and 8 dead pixels! and dust under the screen (build date 2013.09) and now on my 4th one (build date 2013.10).
- no multitouch problems;
- hardware is perfect, no dust under screen, no scratches, nothing (the first nexus also had some dust under the front facing camera);
- no dead pixels;
- but...it has in my opinion al lot of screen bleeding
Now, the question is, should I return this unit, I have made some pics in the dark with 100% brightness, what do you guys think of it?
edit: the bleeding is always seen on a black background during the evening (when its dark with normal house lights on), not so much in daylight. However the bleeding is seen even on 20% or 30% brightness, only if I turn on the automatic brightness things get a little better and the bleeding is minimised to the point that I am less bothered by it. Ooh and when I look at it from a different (a rather extreme) angle it also changes, so I guess it is some sort of glow

Oh....c`mon dude...if you want perfect blacks buy something with AMOLED display.I had that backlight bleeding on my Nexus 4,LG G2,Acer CloudMobile and even on Nexus 7(2013).I think this is normal for IPS displays. It`s just my opinion. But i`ve never seen a IPS screen wich renders perfect blacks like AMOLED.On my Nexus 7(2013) the white spot on the black is not that evident.I will make some pictures when I get home and post them here just for comparison with your pictures.

Somehow I don't believe what you're saying.
That much light bleed on 30% brightness? I call bull**** sorry to say.
It's on 100% brightness and it's on a black screen, what the hell did you expected? It's native to IPS screens so either live with it or guy buy a Samsung Tab 7.3 for 250€ with it's amazing hardware and screen. NOT.

Like I said in the first post "I have made some pics in the dark with 100% brightness, what do you guys think of it?"
The light bleed is indeed visible on 20% or 30% brightness, but of course less than with a 100% brightness. The problem is, everything besides auto-brightness makes it visible. Normally on my other android devices, I turn off auto brightness and leave the brightness on about 25% with the standard widget (with the half moon sign). But on my nexus, I can't do that. The statusbar is always washed out.
The first 3 units didn't have this much bleed, they had very little, not worth mentioning. Also, I am very aware of the fact what I can expect with IPS displays, AMOLED displays (like my galaxy nexus), TN displays (like in my Macbook) and PVA displays (like on my dell 2408fwp). The thing is, this light bleed on my nexus is very obvious and beyond normal. If the light bleed was not so visible under say 60%, I wouldn't care one bit.
The thing is I am very disappointed with the quality of the hardware. I have never in my life returned a gadget more than twice. Normally, if the first one wasn't good, the second one is almost certain perfect. Don't get me wrong, the nexus 7 is a awesome device! But these faulty units ruin it for me.
Maybe bad batch? Mine made in August 2013, nothing wrong

I don't want to sound arrogant or an ass, but I'll tell you what the problem with these threads is(which are alot believe me), light bleed annoyance/any of the other known issues is a personal thing.
And, coming here asking for advice is worthless because it's subjective and won't resolve anything. Everything about your device is up to you or whoever else opens a thread. If you find it bothering, go trade it until you get a unit working fine. Afterall, you payed and you have the right to have a fully working device. If it doesn't bother you that much, don't trade but and don't open a thread about it.
It won't change a thing, whatever people tell you it won't mater.
Good luck.
Hey, I had had 3 Nexus 7 2013s and all of them had light bleed. Even my iPhone 5 (bring on the hate bc i honestly hate my iPhone) has mild light bleed at 100% brightness on boot animation. My father had a Galaxy Note and he was used to flawless blacks and when he got an Xperia SP, he watches badminton matches at night and on loading screens, light leaked out from the sides. He went to Sony but they dismissed the problem
You have to decide how much it bothers you. It's much more than mine (100% bright), but my touch screen isn't what I'd like (like my N5 or even my old Toshiba Thrive).
EDIT: This pic taken of the N7 with my N5 should show better. It is a black background with 100% brightness. Only slight bit of bleed across the top.

You aren't supposed to take a screenshot. You're supposed to put your phone in a dark room and display a fully black pic at 100% brightness

That was a screenshot of Backlight Bleed test at 100% brightness in a darkroom. I understand that maybe the "screenshot" concept prevented light bleed from showing although both look the same. I'll fix it and re-up or remove it.
There seem to be quite a few Note 4's being sold globally that suffer from serious screen coloring (color shifting) when watched from close to a normal viewing angle. To get an idea of the scale of this problem this topic contains a Poll.
This defect is most easily noted on a bright white screen (www.google.com, "Dead Pixel Test" app). Even at a slight angle (=20"-30" from dead straight) the screen will show a clear blue, green or red colored haze. The screen on a properly built Note 4 stays (close to) white, even at a wide angle.
Please let us know if your Note 4 suffers from this phenomena beyond a trivial degree or if it doesn't.
Also be aware to check for this defect BEFORE you root your Note 4, as Samsung will object or even prohibit you to exchange your device for a better model.

I don't think there is such a thing as a "normal" Note 4. Every AMOLED phone from Samsung varies from unit to unit. I remember finding exactly the same differences between two Galaxy S3s where one had a tint horizontally and the other had a tint when angled vertically. Interestingly the phones with the greatest colour shift are usually the ones that go brightest when looked straight on. Either Samsung is making these phones in multiple ways from multiple factory plants....or for whatever reason using different materials (such as polarising materials) in the top layers of the screen.
Although I didn't check the tint on a second Note 4 I tried, I did notice that mine was obviously brighter at all points on the brightness settngs bar!
Either way, while bad uniformity is definitely a defect....I think this off-axis viewing tint is not. If it was a defect, it would exist with Note 4 only and not all the Samsung phones I have seen to-date. BTW my Note 3 also tints when viewing at an angle but a bit less than the Note 4.

I never had this phenomena with my 5 previous Note or Galaxy S phones, nor on my Samsung Tab S 10.5's. I did have multitouch issues on my Note 3 and 2014 Note 10.1. Seeing the screen of the Note 4 is plenty bright I don't care too much for the "more brightness" bonus, if it were applicable here. I compared my unit to a random store unit and in direct comparison I much preferred the store model. The white screen already looked a bit 'off' on mine, and the store model did not have color shifting at all.

What are the chances of both my Note 3 and Note 4 having the same "fault" though? My Note 3 goes bluish off axis, my note 4 goes greenish. Both screens are still perfectly readable at any angle, and only colours that noticeably shift are white/grey. Orange still looks like orange, red still looks like red.

I think it depends on the amount of color shift. My Note 4 has a clear blue haze even when looking at it close to dead straight. I watched a snowboard movie/documentary and snow went definitely blue with only a shift of 20-30 degrees.
It's really good news to know that many devices don't have the blue tint when shifting! If mine has it I'll definitely send it to maintenance. I guess repairing is better as I can look at the device at their facility and not accept it if I don't like the results.

It is really hard to be sure we are all seeing or evaluating this the same way. For example, if I display a photo with many colours, I see no shift at any angle. White is the most obvious and you need "lots" of it like a www.google.com screen to see it. I would say I am fine for 20-30 degrees before it starts shifting. I think you may have been a bit unlucky in happening to choose a snowboard documentary rather than Iron Man 3 or something like that etc! Then you might not have noticed it
I voted "No" because the poll asks whether the screen color changes at a "SLIGHT" angle. While mine does not, at a larger angle the screen does show blue tinge that increases with the angle.
I have this too, its normal?
I have the same "issue" actually it was the first thing I realized when I turned on the phone for the first time. I haven't even realized it with my previous used galaxy S5
It's probably caused by some coating layer. Nothing we can do about it, doesn't distract me much in a phone anyway. The screen is lovely apart from that, the black level made me almost cry when I compared it to my LCD TV. I so want an OLED TV now. Shame they are so expensive.
Mine does this:

Is this a faulty display or is it just the way this display works?
There are several factors involved,
- Amount of Oleophobic Coating which distorts the actual colors discernible by the viewer
- The Digitizer
- The Corning Gorilla Glass
- And the amount of bonding used to keep the AMOLED display adhered to its bottom layer (Remember: Organic by Nature).

I get all the colors green a little blue and a little red it actually seems to me like a [email protected] rainbow I don't mind it much because it doesn't distract me much but I will pay more attention in the near future before buying a Samsung phone again...

It is not repearable by software or external means. Well, maybe a heater could do something, but I am not gonna try.
I sold my Note 4 and now have the Note Edge, which luckily has much less issue with color shifting.
While looking directly mine is red at the middle of the screen. While rotating, the red tint is appearing at the top or bottom of the screen according the rotating direction. Also Bottom part of the screen is also less white than top.
Forgive my not reading the entire thread as it's late and time is an unusually precious commodity lately...
My screen does develop an extremely mild hint of a color shift at slight angles, but I don't notice it unless I look for it. However, at extreme angles (at which I never view the screen, like greater than 75 degrees away from dead-on perpendicular to the screen surface) I do see not only greenish/bluish (almost like a faded teal) but also a magentaish hue. I suspect in my case it's a result of the manufacturing and tempering processes of the glass. LCD panels exhibit something similar when viewed through polarized sunglass lenses, but this is not the same: LCD panels have a nearly random-blob appearance where on this Note 4 it appears in bands running along the vertical (when viewed in portrait orientation) axis of the screen. At worst, I can make it greenish on the left side and magentaish on the right by viewing at around 70-80 degrees off perpendicular, so admittedly I have to hold the phone in such an extreme position to see this that I don't consider it a defect per se.
HIH.
Today when I was holding both my Nexus 6P and Galaxy S7 Edge side by side, I noticed the 6P whites looked significantly more yellowy compared to the S7. I know that the displays weren't that different when I first got them. So I confirmed my S7 was still on the default display settings and the 6P doesn't have any color settings (besides the sRGB color switch in developer settings, which was off). So I knew something was wrong.
I opened a blank Google Doc on both phones. So it was completely fair using the same app to compare. Then just by chance I noticed when the black nav bar at the bottom was recessed, the display was a good bit whiter at that bottom stip than the rest of the display. I looked even closer and noticed the nav buttons were slightly burned in too.
The nav buttons slightly burned in did not really surprise me much and does not bother me much. Especially since its barely noticeable right now and the nav bar covers it 90% of the time. My main concern and disappointment is that this proved my display has Yellowed over only about 1 year of use. I've had my 6P since November 2015 release, but only used it about 9-11 months since I use my S7 edge instead sometimes too.
Is anyone else with a 1+ year old 6P having their display getting yellowish too? Im trying to figure out if this yellowish tint is just just bad luck with mine, or if its happening to all 6P's.
See attached image. Its kind of hard to make out in the picture but it shows the whiter strip at the bottom.
I see the strip at the bottom, but I haven't had any issues myself with any sort of yellowing or discoloration of the screen. I've had my phone about a year now and bought from a seller on Craigslist.

Yep mine is significantly more yellow then when i first got it. Its burn in. (or as im to understand the screen is wearing out or something like that) My nav bar icons and status bar icons are burned in. And the burned in icons are the same color as my yellow screen.

Thanks! I did some research and i can find people complaining about the yellowish with in a couple months getting the phone or right when they got the phone. But nothing from people reporting it getting more yellow over time.
It seems like these amoled displays huawei used aren't very good quality if they can't maintain their color for at least 2 years. Of course the nav button burn in is expected, but having the color change yellowish after only several months of use is unacceptable. If my Samsung amoled display maintains its color for about 2 years (its almost been a year so far), then that proves its not exactly a fault of the amoled technology, but proves Huawei had a poor quality display.
If my Samsung display doesn't last 2 years either, then I might go for IPS display next time. The color accuracy has gotten a lot bettrr on them over the past years and not as washed out in color as they used to be.

I don't have any problem with my N6P display, at least not moticeable. I also use an immersive mod, so no navbar/notification bar burn in. Also using black theme. Don't know it it helps... I had the problem on my Galaxy SII a long time ago. I've already seen a lot of people complaining about the issue and if you Google it, it's a common issue with AMOLED.
Also the N6P display is a Samsung. Maybe they sold Huawei a defective serie?
Are you completely stock?
It happens on every screen regardless of the tech. Some just get it quicker than others depending on usage.
This screen does look more yellow then my iPhone or my s6 did, but it's still a great screen imo
