I wanted to know if it is possible to use simple mobile and galaxy tab and get 3g and voice? and does voice and data work at the same time? Where can i go to get started if this is possible thanks. Everything is scattered so searching is difficult and i have not seen so far a thread saying for sure if its working with 3g thanks
I am thinking of getting a galaxy tab is it worth it? Are there any other tabs that can get voice and data?
You can't get voice and 3G data at the same time in the US whether its with T-mobile or simplemobile.
If you really have to have a 7 inch cellphone get an at&t version. It can do voice and 3g data at the same time.

Saying there is no way is like saying there isn't a Gingerbread update for a US SGT. There is a simple, very effective workaround.
Sign up for Google Talk and then download GrooveIP.
Works perfectly.
It is so well integrated into my tablet experience that I never consider my SGT NOT being a phone.
I think you can still get edge with phone. Just not 3g. But right. There are many other alternatives. I used to use sipgate (paid $20 a year ago and I still have $16 on it). It is acceptable if you are talking to people who are used to international call. I just got galaxy s2 as a real phone and still using sipgate for any international call and surprisingly it sounds better than cheap phone card (sip rate is cheaper btw) so it is still a good alternative. I just would not recomend going through google voice because the latency gets worth with it.

At&t tab and simplemobile sim card = voice and edge is maximum speed (2g) data.
T-mobile tab and simplemobile sim card = voice and edge data. *
Att tab and att sim card with voice and data plan = voice and 3g data.
The network bands are different for the tabs for the high speed data but they are the same for edge data and voice. No modem can fix the hardware difference.
I had both versions and the att version was better when I wanted voice and data. Now I just use wifi or tether the tab to a smartphone.

Oh okay I would go that route but at&t plans are too expensive. simple mobiles $60 plan is really cheap at&t cheapest plan i found was $84.99 plus tax thats with only 2gb data. Maybe there will be a tab that can work on simple mobile or at&t 3g or 4g

Long time AT&T customer probably switching to Sprint, been eyeing the Epic..
If I get a voice call, is it possible (if I'm using a BT headset or speakerphone) to fire up a web browser on it and use that while I'm in-call? To look things up, or whatever?
If it can't do that, are there any other Sprint phones that can (EVO, for example?)
Thanks!
if i remember right, you can use data and voice only when you are connected onto 4G and WIFI, but not 3G. i have not tested this out yet to confirm but i remember reading that somewhere if i read it right. i also came from att (iphone) and being able to use data (3G) and voice at the same time was a major plus. ill have to try it out though later on my epic.
Yes u can use data while on a call only if you are on WiFi or 4g. Tested and verified.

Well, drat. Thanks fellas. Not that I do that very often, but it does come in handy. I checked and EVO "suffers" from the same problem.
Again, thanks, that's handy to know.
Its a cdma limitation, not a device one. Both sprint and verizon have this issue.

Some might say it is a "limitation", however is it the reason why cdma networks do not suffer from dropped calls like gsm networks do.
For more information, you can check out this rather lengthy post about why cdma is better than gsm.
yeah, i experience the same thing. it's becoming pretty much a deal breaker for me, as often i am on the phone for an hour or more and am trying to look things up at the same time. no joy. plus the abysmal battery life has me glad that i am still in the 30 day window ?; i like the phone a lot otherwise. wish i could get it for ATT. i have never had problems with their service, and would love to be able to talk and surf at the same time.
On 3g only voice.
On 4g voice n data simultaneous

+1 you can thank the iPhone and this great "feature" for the ****ty network over at ATT
I am very excited to see all the great work that has been done to achieve voice+data on the AT&T Galaxy Tab (and T-Mobile). I am a VZ customer, and have been for 6+ years. I was hoping to pickup a VZ GT, and be able to use voice on it (at some point), but going to the AT&T store tonight and playing with a GT has made me far too impatient to wait. I want my GT now!
Leading into my question..
As I have no relationships with AT&T, I have no idea their plans, pre-pay options, etc., not to mention what will work best for the GT. I want to know what is the best way to setup a plan and get a SIM that I am going to be able to use in an AT&T device to achieve voice+data.
Thank you, and I hope forthcoming answers will be of assistance to all the others out there like myself!

Fairly heavy, and I can only see it going up with the GT. The voice - not a ton. Something like 200 minutes per month. I doubt that wold be increasing.
After reading around, I think the best solution for me is going to be:
AT&T Galaxy Tab
SIM Unlock
Voice Hack
Simple Mobile $60/mo plan for 'unlimited everything'/

Don't know if this is apparent from their website, but Simply Mobile is a T-Mobile reseller, so you won't get 3G data from them... only EDGE.

For my needs right now, I think EDGE is going to be ok.
As this is a device I "want", but dont have to "have", I can take some time and keep looking for a better way to make this work the way I want though.
Hey,
i waited till the release of the 32GB version of the Nexus 7.On the official Google Blog i have read: "Nexus 7 with 32GB and mobile data: $299 and unlocked, on sale 11/13 in the Google Play store in the U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Germany, Spain and Canada."
Now my question is, what do they mean with "unlocked"? Fully rooted? That would be awesome!
Hope you can help me!

I'm sure they mean, not carrier specific. its compatible with 200+ carriers worldwide.

You think so?
But what do you mean with carrier specific? Could you explain a bit more?
It is NOT carrier specific... meaning it isn't LOCKED to any specific carrier... aka it isn't branded... and it doesn't require 2yr contracts to get it for that price.
It means you pay $300 and can pop in any SIM card from any GSM carrier and go to town.

They mean unlocked as in you can use it with whatever SIM card you wanted on whatever network. As long as it is GSM of course. (LTE uses SIM even though some are CDMA based)
If it were "locked" we had to buy it from a mobile carrier as Vodafone, T-Mobile etc including a contract for 1-2 years.
Can you make calls with this or are you limited to data only? I'm also assuming this is penta band.
Data only, but there's so many ways to make voice calls online.
Thanks for every answer.Hope they will get it on amazon.de early as possible.:fingers-crossed:

Yeah, but easiest way, like a smartphone, would be fine ?
We now have in France, for less than 20€, full plans (3Gb fair use, unlimited MMS/SMS and unlimited phone calls). The right plan to put in a Nexus7 HSDPA !
If the Nexus7 HSDPA has capability to phonecalls like the former GalaxyTab7" or 7,7", i would replace one of my Note1 with this one !

According to everything I've found, the Nexus 7 is NOT a telephone. If you want to make voice calls you will need to use a voip service like Skype. Jellybean does have a phone app hidden away (for the Nexus 4) But I'm pretty sure if you brought it up on a Nexus 7 and tried to use it, it would either hang or make an error.
You know those portable 3g/4G routers you can buy and put a sim in? It's just like having that built in to your tablet.

My biggest question is how accessable the SIM card is....
I read in a Verge posting that it will ship with your choice of T-MO or AT&T SIM preinstalled (for USA)- does this mean we won't be able to (easily) change it?
T-MO has simple and flexible monthly 4G plan options, for cheap. I don't know what AT&T has in comparison, but the only reason I personally would go with AT&T is wider coverage.

The radio isn't 4G compatible; more of a "3.5G". It will work with 3G stuff, but not 4G apparently. Kinda strange Google didn't just jump right to 4G, if they were gonna do this at all... still, pretty awesome.

Curious to know... Source please ?
Can't wait to get me hands on one of these... we're still chugging along with a mix of 2G and 3G here in India. So this would be perfect. Our data plans are pretty cheap and contacts with cellular companies are almost unheard of...
Wonder is this will work with all the 3G carriers in India?
So, to repop the question...Can anyone confirm or deny if the Nexus7 HSPA version has the capability of being used as a phone for making regular voice calls?
I'd love a 7 inch tablet that functions as a phone. But it seems something is not allowing the Nexus 7 to receive voice/texting only mobile data.
Is this a hardware thing? Does it lack some sort of radio or is this just the carriers messing with us?
I does make you wonder.... New Galaxy Note 2 (no contract) $650. Nexus 7 $300 (HSPA+) Why is the phone so much more expensive? I get that the phone has a few more chips and is smaller, but it can't be that much more expensive..
Does anyone know of any 7 inch tablets that allow voice telephony? I'm not talking about google voice, I'm talking about standard cellular voice/texting. I have no interest in carrying around my phone, I just want a tablet that does it all.
Really?:silly: It should be obvious that the lack of cellular phone hardware is the reason behind this. Also, making things smaller is almost always more expensive.

What you are referring to as a modem is, in actuality, separate from the cellular radio that transmits on one or several frequencies in order to make phone calls. When you consider the range required for a phone to be able to make reliable connections to cell towers and compare that to the short range of the modem the phone uses to connect to wireless routers, you begin to understand the complexity and disparities in price and performance. Or not.

Actually, I didn't since he never mentioned 3G in his OP. Still, the radios designed for a 3G data signal are not the same as those required for telephony, which no tablet has because they do not have the hardware. Only AT$T's network supports simultaneous voice and data, by the way.
Ok. He did mention 3g HSPA+.. And ATT is not the only network that allows simultaneous voice and data. With my evo 4g lte I could make calls and surf the Web on 3g. Just read this and thought I'd let you know. As far as making phone calls on your tablet you can. Just download Groove ip and Google voice and there ya go. I know it's not as reliable and a little hassle but I don't think many people would invest into having a tablet as a phone. . At least not yet. ..seems bigger is coming back. I have me note 2 on sprint and love it. .

The 3g has the Intel xmm 6260 chipset. The very same one that is in your s2. It is an all-in-one radio supporting voice as well as hspa+. There is a Dev thread about trying to unlock the telephony features in the chip since it was crippled by Asus or google on purpose.
Here in Canada on Rogers network we can do exactly that with the Rogers one number app. This app let's you make or receive calls text or receive text and video calling, free long distances in Canada, all that on my tablet with the same phone number as my cellphone and best part of all that it's free So it is possible, the closest you could get is Skype with a skypein number so you could receive calls...

Hey guys, to all who are wondering... T-Mobile stores do have some stock of the blue Nexus 6 32gb today, didn't have an issue getting mine. I do have an account with a single line on T-Mobile that I do not use, so I used that account and paid for device in full ($650). Out of the box, it works great on Verizon. Voice quality is much better than Droid Turbo and iPhone 6+. Data speeds are strong (75mbps down & 30up) on LTE.
All I had to do to activate on Verizon was either let device self activate with Verizon SIM that takes about 5 minutes, or by going into Settings - More - Cellular and toggling Global mode.
The reason I made this thread is incase somebody who is like me and got tired of waiting for Google and Moto to have stock and wanted to purchase it via T-Mobile and use on another carrier. My friend works in a retail store and he said that even if you do not have an account with them, you can still buy you at full cost.
Does that mean its sim unlock?

Why would you do that? I have it set to LTE and it seems to keep onto an LTE signal longer compared to "Global" mode, which I would use if I was traveling overseas and inserted a local SIM into my device.
But wouldn't it lose signal if you leave lte coverage and drop to 3g? Since Verizon is CDMA.
