I installed skype on my Kindle Fire and everytime I try.to make a call or receive a call it automatically fails, anyone know why? Maybe the skype I have is a older version.

From my experience, apps that try to access hardware that the Kindle Fire does not have (like a camera, microphone, etc.) will force close the app. So when you try to use Skype, that's probably what's going on (it's trying to access the nonexistent camera/microphone).
Even if I have headohones with a mic plugged in? That sucks

So, let's assume that we have a microphone installed and that it works with other applications. Anyone have an idea how we might fix the problem?
There is no known fix for using a mic with Skype or Google Voice. May never be a fix for it.

Is there any way to trick Android into thinking the kindle fire is another device or disable the market filtering in general. On my rooted kindle I have android market installed and it filters out lots of apps,(Facebook, Twitter, and other apps that I would like to get) and for some of the apps it seems there is no reason to filter them. So if someone knows a way around this please reply.
Thanks in advance,
Andyspam
Idk if it would work but you could try edit the build prompt to make it "another device" Idk if it would work but it's a place to start

But that might cause problems with the Amazon-specific apps if you're trying to keep the functionality.

I may sound kind of noobish but how do I locate and edit the build prompt?
My advice to you is to side load apps that you can't download natively from the store rather than try and fool the market. I think by you trying to modify system files to change the device name is going to potentially cause you more hurt than it's going to gain you.
My 2 cents.
Yes, sildeloading will be your safest bet if you re not sure what you are doing,
and for a good facebook app , search for facebook 2.0 v2.2 (ithink that's the latest)
I don't think the official one is quite updated for tablets.
Most twitter apps need you to have google maps installed (or more importantly, one of the google map frameworks)
What about tricking apps into thinking that we're running Honeycomb in order to get the tablet interface on apps like IMDB and Gmail?
Does that amazon video or prime work still once rooted? If not is there a way to work around it? I really want the android market but don't want to lose my month trial for prime which I'm using now.
How do you get vod or amazon prime video to work once rooted? I'm not rooted yet but taking the plunge tonight. BTW, What thread should I follow to root my KF and then install all the google apps?
Have a few more questions.
What launchers work on the KF? ADW, LP,etc.?
All keyboards work?
Is there any way to text on the kindle? That would help me so much.
What email apps do you reccomend, the stock email app is not agreeing with me.
Last.is there anyway to print from the kindle to my wireless printer?
There are tons of threads already answering most of these questions. Try a search first.

Amazon videos do not work while rooted. Simply keep your kindle fire unrooted when you're using it, as it won't affect your ability to use apps and settings configured during root.
No keyboards work currently. The fire has no official Bluetooth, though a there does seem to be a Bluetooth radio on the board. No one is sure at this time if it can be activated.
No one has been able to make Skype work for voice yet, but I believe you can text using it. I have not tested it though.
I think most of the launchers work though I only have experience with go launcher ex, which works great.
if you aren't rooted, you can use Kaiten Mail for most of your pop accounts. I use touchdown for my outlook mail but its a paid app. If you have rooted, you can install the standard Gmail app.
I have side loaded both the HP eprint local app and an app called Cloud Print that can use Google's cloud print service. Both work fine on my fire.
I installed "ota rootkeeper" via android market.. it makes a backup of your root in case an ota update deroots you. also it has a function where it can temporarily deroot you.. I used that and rebooted the kindle once and now I can play amazon prime videos again. and the apps I installed via android market all still work
After you temp deroot, You don't need to reboot the Kindle Fire to do that. Just stop the VOD service (Amazon Video), and it will work then.
After you restart the Amazon Video app, you can even reroot using the OTA Rootkeeper app and the Video will still work. This will probably work until the Video app is restarted or the Kindle is restarted -- whichever comes first.
Hey,
I installed CM7 on my KF according to the dev section. I installed the kindle app from the market as I obviously lost it in the process, sadly I can't seem to be able to load my own books on the fire (I am trying to read .mobi and .epub files).
Has anyone been able to accomplish this?

Sort of a glitchy workaround, but the Kindle app running in your launcher (CM7) seems to be pointing to an active read in your authentic KindleFire launcher. I was frustrated to see that the app was unresponsive until adding a link to the Fire launcher, selecting the literature of choice from that interface, and (if you so choose) only then would the Kindle app within CM7 activate within that book.
For now, the hot-route back to the Fire launcher works very well for accessing all of the books, etc; as well as the Prime video library.
Cheers!
I guess I answered my own question. You have to side-load the books to Android/data/com.amazon.kindle
However the app doesn't read epub files, but reads .mobi.
This kindle app version is not even close to be as good as the stock one.
I tried to install KindleForOtter from the 6.2 update but the kindle app won't even load then.
Although Aldiko is decent I don't really want to use it because it's not as good.
Any idea?
Also, does anyone know what kind of Fonts the stock kindle app uses?
THanks

I guess link may be a little misleading; I simply added the Amazon launcher to my taskbar for quickly getting back & forth between the two environments (stock & ADW).
HE is not on CM7. HE is stock, using an alternate launcher.
I am having the same issue. on CM7, I can not get the kindle app to even run.
Yeah that's what I figured.
Could someone please post the kindle stock apk? If its not called KindleForOtter.apk
http://www.mediafire.com/?az8obq77c7a7z39 this one?
Yeah so I guess this is the one and only. Sadly it doesnt work.
I just tested the method above with a stock/alternate launcher as you mentioned above. After exiting the alt launcher and using stock to first open a book; it was then accessible in the alt launcher via the Kindle Reader App... it loses the functionality of perusing multiple books, but as I said, seems to be a temporary workaround.

I believe you're still talking about an alternative launcher side-loaded with the stock fire.
I was talking about CM7 which I installed and wiped the stock fire launcher. Since it doesn't exist anymore, I can't side load it.
I was unable to get the Kindle Fire Kindle app to work. It would display the splash screen, and then go back to CM7 launcher....
I just went back to stock. If I cant use the Prime Amazon Video, use the Kindle App and get my loaner books, or get netflix to run smoothly with decent quality and synced Video and sound, I will wait until it can...

Yeah I understood you.
Could you please pull it out com.amazon.kindle.otter and upload it? Also tell me which folder it was in (full path).

KindleforOtter.apk is located in the /system/app with permissions set to RW-R--R--. The ATVAndroidClient.ap is also in the /system/app directory with permissions set to RW-R--R--

Well thats progress at least. If I tried to launch my kindle app before, it wouldn't do anything, now it launches and crashes immediately. The amazon video app works but when I start watching a video com.amazon.avod crashes.
I'm not a coder so I'm not sure how to deal with processes and I couldn't find a folder for that but it seems that if I can side load com.amazon.avod and com.amazon.kindle.otter I could get further. I just don't know how to do it.
I think that version of kindle is a stripped down version without a library browser to complement the kindle fire launcher interface. The book selection was all done in the stock launcher. I remember once i had a book open I didnt need to use the stock launcher to open the kindle app.
I figured out how to control your kindle fire by voice. Check out my blog: kindlefireboss.blogspot.com
ORIGINAL INSTRUCTIONS FROM SITE:
Yeah, you read right. Control your kindle fire by voice. All you need is Google Voice Search . Just install Voice Search and start controlling your kindle fire by voice. NOTE: This requires an external mic. I used the apple ear phone and mic included with the iPhone but any will work. Download link below Link: http://www.4shared.com/android/Oq2GWqd7/1319770780.html

I just want to add that I hear that it has to be a three banded microphone (the plug has 3 bands) usually a combo headset type thing. if i remember correctly. in other words not all mics will work

I don't think it can work.
Because Kindle fire have no microphone.
Wait for the second generation Kindle fire, or other product.
Amazon is not a device manufacture.
I have a Apple mic and earphone I use with my kindle. It works perfect. You can get one from amazon or an Apple retail store.
It work
It is working fine with voice recognition apps, but skype still not recognized microphone
noooooo
I tried it With a mic that i made with a transistor, but it didnt work
Skype cant detect the mic for some reason. I have tried too, but it just cant tell its plugged in.
Did the mic you made work well with other devices?
Doesn't recognize my mic either =\
Did you try with a diff mic?
You need to be rooted to install Google Voice Search, right?
It works even without rooting.
I was the person on this forum who first used a Mic with the Fire. I remeber trying to install Voice Search, and it not installing bc I wasn't rooted. Am I remebering incorrectly?

I just tried it again, and now I remember - Google Voice Search force closes when I open it. I went through this several months ago, when I found that a mic works on the Fire for audio recordings. As far as I know, so far no one has been successful in using Google Voice or Skype on the Fire for phone calls.
You're the first person I'm hearing who says that they got Voice Search to work. I'm not rooted, and as I said, Voice search crashes when I open it. Up to now, I haven't rooted because I haven't found any additional functionality that rooting the Fire gives you that I would like to have. This might make me change my mind.
Anyone else try it?
The damnedest thing happened: I got up this morning and noticed that the 1mobile app store I have installed showed that there was an update available for Google Voice Search. Just for the hell of it, I installed it and now the voice search works! This is great! Now I have to see how I can install a keyboard with a voice-to-text button (I'm not rooted, remember. I'd like to stay that way if I can).
Meanwhile, for those of you wondering about which microphones to use, you can do this - either use on of these "button" style mics:

or, these type of headset/mic combos which also work on iphones and ipads:

Great that voice search finally works for you, but I would like to point out that the apple headset that you have linked is a knock off. Here are the genuine headsets

Had anyone else seen the following behavior?
When I add my Kindle Fire to the Play Store during first set up then it removes my phone (Epic 4G) from the Play Store Devices list. If I go back to my phone I get the "Error Processing Purchase DF-BPA-09" error when trying to install anything. Now if I do the fix for that which is clear data on the Google Framework, Stop the Play Store, Clear Data on the Play Store, reboot. I can re-register my phone in the Play Store, however this then removes the Kindle Fire from the Devices list and gives me the "Error Processing Purchase" there instead! I've used an app to check Device IDs and they are NOT the same so I'm confused what could be causing this conflict. Does anyone with a more extensive knowledge of how android works care to shed some light on this? Does anyone else have this problem?
I have called Google but of course with both devices rooted they blamed rooting/romming for the issue.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

ETA: Kindle is running CM9 Based GedeROM however this happens under AOKP as well.

Sorry you are having issues. Why don't you try altering the build.prop on your fire to make it look like a galaxy nexus. Les see if that fixes the problem.

Actually that is what gedeROM does, I have tried other ROMs as well where it does not show up as a Nexus and yet still have the problem. It's very odd.
