[Q] Why upgrade to 2.3?? - Huawei Ideos X5 U8800

Call me naive, but why would I upgrade to the official 2.3 realise from one of the gingerbread based roms (CM7 / oxygen / MIUI)??
Are there performance gains to be had??
I'm struggling to understand the motivation to upgrade, please enlighten me.
Thanks.

You shouldn't yet. What i have heared, it has better camera, wifi and touchscreen. But i don't think it's worth it.

If you can't stand using the 2.2.x version then you could upgrade to the official or an unofficial 2.3.x. Since you are in this forum you probably want the latest and greatest
In my case I upgraded to the official (I didn't try to root it yet). In my opinion it works fine, no issues with wifi at work or at home. The camera is better as mentioned by other members (it could be a placebo), and it feels more responsive (could also be a placebo). Some minor issues have been fixed/improved. I'm not much of a gamer but I've read that 3D performance is also improved.
The bad things are that they replaced the default launcher/music/lockscreen etc with their own, you can use something from the market but I'd prefer the AOSP ones to be included in the ROM (I want the CRT lockscreen effect!!!), I also couldn't make the equalizer to work which is strange but maybe it's a beta thing...
Also there are no Greek letters on the contact list (the vertical alphabet) and the SMS app supports 70 chars in Greek and not 160 (using the same IME that supported 160 in Froyo). These could be Gingerbread issues and not Huawei specific though but if you use a non-latin alphabet...
I don't plan to downgrade (it can be done as I've read), I don't have random reboots, crashes or other annoyances but I didn't have any on Froyo either.
You should always want to upgrade (the motivation is better performance, more features and a better user experience). Apart from from the Huawei custom stuff you could read some of the many Froyo vs Gingerbread etc articles in order to understand what to expect from an upgrade and decide if you need it (to either a custom or the official beta ROM)
I hope I helped...

Right. Think I'll stick will miui and hope someone can make a rom with the improvements from the official release

Android Final release?

Greetings over there,
after testing some Androids on my hd2 and recognizing that NAND Flash is now available it would be nice to know if there is an bugfree reliable release out worth to flash and long term trust in. Actually I use Froyo HD adaption from Desire HD, and I really like it, if there wouldnt be a problem, making me sound very bad in phone calls to the other side which I just know from my first tested release which also was a froyo I think.
Thx for your hints,
Its a great resource over here!

Tytung's Nexus 1.9b release is VERY stable. He really puts a lot of effort into his builds. I havent had any issues and I have been using his builds for a while now...I think a lot of others will agree. It isnt sense though.
go over to the nand forum section and check the changelogs
but there is a desire z build in the sd forum section that is nand i liked it very much had no problems, just one reboot and perfect. i would check the desire z nand build out first cuz it is lighter and faster than hd builds

It seems very difficult to keep sight on which builds will be best for what you want. Isn't it amazing how many ROMs have been published in the past 12 days, and how many of those have been updated (some: multiple times) since their first presentation.
Personally I wouldn't mind if the number of releases would be halved, when the number of 'this or that is'nt working' reports would halve as well.....

You should take a look on this build, really..
But i like playing around with the phone, so i installed Gingerbread from mdj
For daily use i would use the Nexus 1.9b.

Exactly. You got the / my point!
It's relly amazing how much developement is done. But it becomes more and more difficult to decide for a build. I need to use a release for atleast a week to know if it is reliable enough. Some have instable internet, some bad speech quality, on some the cam hung up... and I started to test in october, when most major bugs were fixed.
Maybe some review / documentation / moderation is needed. Is there an easy way to make a poll where everyone can insert release name and vote on some options like cam / i-net / phonequal. / speed overall / etc. ? I will have a look for smth. in this way.
I will give Tytung's Nexus 1.9b a try. As long as I just have to rename my old Android folder everything is fine. But that is also the biggest problem with NAND releases... you need to backup evereything instead of renaming, quite annoying if you get a bug that forces you to flash back (btw ).
For me the most important is a always working internet connection and good speech quality. (what else these phones are really made for)

Miui Settings lag is gone :D

Just had a discussion with miui devs in irc and today's release of miui gingerbread is supposed to remove the settings menu lag that was bugging us all. The english pack will be released in few hours but if you are too impatient to use the new version, head out to miui.com and download the chinglish version peacce

Thanks very much, great to know. Just downloaded it though I'll wait for the English pack before I try it ; )
There are so many cool things about the MIUI ROMs. If I hadn't become accustomed to HTC's ability to sync contacts/calendar with Outlook on my PC rather than with Google, I wouldn't ever need to go back to Sense ROMs...
*update* Couldn't resist flashing it. The settings menus are indeed much smoother now. As an aside, Quadrant Standard scores are still very low for me compared to, for example, Desire HD ROMs such a BoyPPc's. Currently getting 1000-1300 in MIUI vs 1700-2000 in BoyPPC's Desire HD v15. I don't care about the scores in themselves, but it definitely shows in the performance of the web browser etc. Not sure if I have the wrong recovery settings or something, but there ya go.
I hope theres a fix for the desire version soon i really want to give the ROM a good go but it just annoys the hell out of me lol

[Q] Joe Stone ASOP 2.3.2 has no ringtone and vibration

Installed few days ago from official 2.1 (updated at LG service centre). My process was from official 2.1 to Indian 2.1 with fastboot (I'm not Indian though), then to ASOP 2.3.2. I like this clean and less programmes come along. Nothing let me not happy except I missed many calls due to no ringtones sound or vibrate. I check setting and all volumes are set to maximum and vibration is on. Please help me.
I had the same problem and because of that now I have M6 in my phone
I don't have much information regarding CM7 M6 or lower versions. It seems to me that its related posts assume all readers are fully aware of its functionalities and bugs. Honestly, I am new to android and this phone is my first phone that I want to experiment but without bricking my phone. If you could point me to a threat or post that provide full detail of individual release, I will be very satisfied.
GT540 Android development -> cyanogenmod Mur4ik M6 (or something like that) ... you can find it on your own ;-) I have M6 and I can say it's perfect ROM

Thank Matcho.
I read some threats regarding M6. There is a non favorable issue of freezing complaint by many users. It is better to wait for Joestone to come with an update. I do not want to take risks at this time.

[Q] improvements in 2.3?

guys i want to ask a basic question . is it advisable to downgrade from our cm7 n oxygen 2.3.7 to official 2.3.5 ???
i mean are there any considerable improvements ( i dont care about wifi issue bec dont use it ) . should i go for it bec my cm7 is working just fine - no random crashes , normal battery life etc etc .
I had cm7 since I bought the phone and I upgraded (its more a downgrade) to 2.3.5 official. I have no regrets, because I like it better:
- Better touch response;
- Better camera;
- Less sensor lag & no problems with MMS;
- Best microphone quality.

also big 3d graphics improvement 30-31 fps on nemamark 2 (thats even better than dual core htc sensation)
The reason for the improvements are probably the updated kernel modules/firmware not some Huawei magic. My guess is that if those modules and kernel (when released) find their way to CM or any of the other ROMs the improvements will be greater...
also there is already a thread about the improvements and reasons to go or not to 2.3 official... and there are arguments about the forum being a mess lately...

It includes market, it is not the final release and according to this they removed it and will release a new (beta) upgrade next Thursday.
You can always wait for the final release at the end of December (I don't know if they'll keep their promise)
In my case everything worked ok but there are people with issues and this may concern you if it is your only phone... warranty probably covers any damage caused by the upgrade but nobody want to come up to that...

[Q] Recommend me a ROM

No, this is not one of the usual 'What's the best ROM out there' threads.
I am looking for something specific and hoping all you people can be of help.
I have been using a MIUI NAND ROM for some time now and been very happy with it but am now looking for a change with all the new stuff I see out there.
However, one of the reasons I am using the MIUI ROM is that it was one of the few at the time that supported WiFi Hotspot. The Gingerbread ROMs at the time didn't work.
Do any of the newer ICS ROM's support Hotspot working? If so, which ones have people used. I would perhaps like a move back to a Sense ROM if there is one our there to recommend, but this isn't a prime requirement.
Before you all shout at me, I have looked through the current threads on ROM's, but the issue of working Hotspot is not one that crops up very often, hence this question.
Thanks for reading, and looking forward to all your recommendations
If you read carefully you'll find that in most cases its NATIVE Wi-Fi hotspot that doesn't work, whilst third party hotspot apps do. No I can't recommend one, never used it.
+1 really wanna push this thread....
I basically got stuck with 2 (/3)
NexusHD2-JellyBean-4.1.2-CM10 V1.1 tytung <--my old favourite, had this installed for 2 days (until I broke my "new" phone - but will work again this week)
PACman HD2 v1.1 [PA/AOKP/CM10] Xylo <--my new favourite, from what I read
(EvoHD2v10 ICS 4.0.4-full HWA "Fastest ICS ever" ) <--whats with good old ICS?
convince me. I want a stable running daily use OS. shouldnt have major bugs (like reboots/having to restart/phone etc.), like in tytungs ROM, I once answered a call and there was just a "brrrrrrrrrrrrrr" <--"phone" not responding do you want to close it, pretty bad
If its very customizable/technical (like xylo) - fine, I love to be able to engineer my own things (I dont care if minor bugs)
so what do you guys think? which one do you enjoy the most and why
