How do I boot to CWM with a Droid 2? I am an experienced Fascinate user, but I can't seem to find the right thread to boot to CWM or even download CWM on this device.
I boot into ROM manager and hit flash recovery and it flashes. I then try to boot to recovery from ROM Manager and it just does a normal reboot. When I hold down the x key on the keyboard it goes to the Android (stock) recovery. How do I get to CWM or get CWM on my phone as default recovery?
Use Droid 2 Bootstrap recovery. Or power off, wait for the battery to come up, unplug, and boot up, that should boot it into CWM

When the phone is powering on and gets to the M boot logo watch for the blue light to flash in the upper right hand corner. When it flashes press the down volume key and then select recovery--->latest recovery in the options menu that comes up. This will take you into ClockWork Recovery.
CWM Bootloader
Ok guys... I MiUi Rom onto my Droid 2. When I rebooted after a successful install I get into a boot loop with MiUi logo. This is a problem... So I tried rebooting in CWM and can't... I've tried the 'Battery' trick and waiting for a Blue LED flash and can't get into it. I know the ROM was a faulty ROM now and didn't download install properly. I can get into stock booloader fine, no problems but need to get into CWM. Any tricks/knowlege I'm not finding, or possibly not doing the Battery method properly? Thanks guys!!
Bootstrap Recovery, worth the 2$ in the store.

I've had a Droid Incredible (AMOLED) for sometime, Unrevoked Forever. Flashed many, many ROMs and kernels, and numerous recovery backups.
Picked up a Droid X yesterday (still have my Dinc). Rooted using Z41, and have permanent root. Paid for and downloaded Bootstrap, and had ROM Manager from my Dinc.
I've spent a good six hours reading the various "how to" threads and Googling, but I'm not finding the solution to my issue.
I can boot into Clockworkmod Recovery from within Bootstrap.
But, I cannot figure how to boot into Clockworkmod Recovery from power off state. When I hold the Home button while powering up, hitting the Search button boots my DX into the stock recovery, NOT Clockworkmod Recovery.
I guess my question is, how / is it possible to make Clockworkmod Recovery the default recovery when booting from power off?
Looking forward to getting to know the DX community on XDA.
To boot into clock work from power off...hold vol down then press power. Hold about 10 seconds. You should be good to go...

That is the method on the Dinc, which I'd tried. But, just now did it and released the power button after the Moto logo appeared and continued to hold the vol down, and there was the familiar Clockworkmod Recovery glowing green.
Old habits.
Thanks!
Cool, glad it worked. Was not sure about the exact timing though!

Well, so I flashed a ROM (ApeX 1.3 which runs well), but once again I can boot into Clockworkmod Recovery via Bootstrap, but cannot (or have not found a way) boot into Clockworkmod Recovery from power down, even using the above method that worked with the rooted stock .340.
Not a biggie unless something bad happens, of course.
Thoughts? The ROM? Me?

From Koush's website:
What if my phone won't boot? How do I get into recovery without the app?
When the hijacker runs, it will automatically create the "/data/.recovery_mode" file after it finishes. This tells the system that the next time it boots, it should boot into recovery. But, when the system starts, the Droid X Recovery Bootstrap will then delete that file when Android is fully started, to prevent you from booting into recovery. So what does this mean? If you fail to boot, simply pull your battery, and your next boot will be into recovery (unless your /system is *really* hosed, in which case you need to SBF).
I'd probably just press bootstrap recovery in the app every time you turn your phone on. So just in case you DO need it next time you boot up, it'll be there. Damn moto and their locked phone..

That doesn't do it either. Must be the custom ROM.
Somewhat OT, but you're right about the "damn Moto and their locked phone." Coming from the Dinc, I'm not accustomed to this sort of hassle. Having said that, altho I've only had the DX for a couple days (and still have my Dinc), I am liking the big screen, albeit not as nice as the AMOLED, and the really solid build of the DX--it's a good phone. Looking forward to the Thunderbolt...

Not through that menu, but using Boot Manager you can dual boot roms. Your base rom must be 2nd init, however.

Having same issue as poster above: Can NOT get into CWM recovery. (Also have Rom Toolbox installed, and I can't get into Recovery via that app, either.)
Running Liquid 3.2, and no matter what I try, I can only get into stock recovery.
EDIT: Was able to get into CWM Recovery from ROM Manager: Select Reboot into CWM Recovery, then hold VOL DOWN button while phone reboots. Voila! (Still doesn't solve original issue, but it's progress.)
i rooted using the terminal method on mac. i cant post a link it wont let me but its on droid life. i cant figure out how to reboot into clockwork mod or stock recovery i want to flash this new liquid rom i downloaded. can someone tell me how to do this or provide a link i can use to help me? thanks.
I also have sbf'd liquid 3.2. I've had a terrible time with the radio. Wifi works, it doesn't. 3G works, it doesn't. Market works, it doesn't. So, I just sbf'd the rom again but the phone is stuck in a boot loop. I need to get into Clockwork to try "wiping", but I can't get in. Seems like it's yet another issue with liquid 3.2. Anybody have any ideas?

I'm unable to boot into Clockword mod recovery as well when I choose to do so from the ROM manager... It just reboots my phone back that's all...
I'm on stock 605 and just rooted my phone - no boot strap or bootloader apps I've installed other than the CWM recovery 5.0.2.0 I installed through ROM manager v4.8.0.6
I'm able to boot into Stock recovery (Search button and then volume keys) but not into cwm recovery....
Any suggestions what I'm doing wrong ? I even tried volume down key during power up - doesnt seem to help. I dont see any blue LED either during the moto logo...
Thanks...
EDIT/UPDATE: I installed the Droid X bootstrap apk, Install bootstrap, and Reboot into recovery and that seemed to start up CWM recovery fine I guess ROM manager was not installing the right CWM boostrap... From the ROM manager I was selecting the Droid X, (had tried Droid X 2nd init as well as Droid 2 - didnt seem to make any difference that time)....
On blur roms you always have to use the Droid 2 Bootstrapper app before flashing ClockworkMod Recovery in Rom Manager.

USB Debugging
I was having a terrible time getting into any kind of recovery, Bootstrap, Rom Manager, etc., that is until I remembered something I read sometime back. I unchecked USB Debugging and then had virtually no problem with getting into recovery mode.
So, having said all that, check to see if your USB Debugging is checked or not. That might make a difference for you.
Help. I accidently my girlfriend's mom's phone.
Unable to boot into recovery.
The phone has been running the first Pre-Rooted DX GB Leak for a while now, and still works great, but when I went to load the latest leak I had some trouble. Rom Manager wont boot into recovery (it just reboots the phone). When I try to manually get into recovery by holding the home button, I get stuck at the Android "!" screen; pushing the search button at this point does nothing.
Does anyone know where I went wrong? I've tried re-flashing Clockworkmod several times, and also DX Bootstrap. No luck.
What do?

BTW: this is a red lense defy, last rom was JB 4.1.1 quarx 30.07 build.
the sbf was supposed to have the same rom.
update 1: managed to finally flash stock, cant enable 3g. phone is still rooted, installing superuser is succesfuly but doesnt control attributes. so 2ndinit currently does not work,

UPDATE 16/11/2012: links check and updated everything should work.
Solution:
1. first get these files as we'll need all of them: Rsd lite (download and install that),
Motorola drivers (download and install: Here)
JORDN_U3_97.21.51.rar(contains sbf file): http://www.4shared.com/get/xzT3dMXv/JORDN_U3_972151.html
firmware.rar(contains another sbf file): http://www.4shared.com/rar/Ytt5O6--/firmware.html
2ndinit 1.4.2, and 2ndinit 2.3 (can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212).
also need the nandroid backup: http://www.4shared.com/file/pVQfB4bF/2011-06-11141427.html
[Optional]
superuser.zip file installing from recovery: http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.2-arm-signed.zip
2. [Optional] I didn't have a router at my house and no signal at my phone and i needed internet for 2ndinit, so i installed a program that turns my wifi on the computer into a hotspot, it can be found here: http://www.connectify.me/
3.First shutdown your phone, hold the Vol down and boot the phone up keeping the volume down pressed. you should come up to a triangle android logo, press the vol up and down key and then tap the screen ( this is a touch screen gui), choose the wipe data/cache and press ok, this should take up to 5 minutes.
4. Now, shut down the phone (pull the battery out and return it back in), Hold the Vol Up button and power up your phone.
you will enter the Bootloader (or BL as its called in the forums) and you should see the phone stating that (usually 9.10 version)
5. after installing Rsd lite, launch it, extract the JORDN_U3_97.21.51.rar and firmware.rar files into root directory (C:\ or D:\ or whatever).
in rsdlite press the
...
Click to collapse
button and choose the JORDN_U3_97.21.51.sbf file.
connect your phone via a usb cable to your computer, the phone should state its connected. and you should see on the rsdlite window that a device is connected, click on it and press the button :"start".
let it finish and boot on itself (it should do that).
6. [Optional] if you started with low battery now is a good time to charge your phone.
7. transfer the 2ndinit 1.4.2 apk and the 2ndinit 2.3 apk into a folder in your sd card (name it "A" for ease of use).
also extract the 2011-06-11.14.14.27.zip into this folder on your sd card "/clockworkmod/backup/"
8. extract the superoneclick on your computer and launch it, while the phone is connected (should also be in usb debugging mode), press the root button in the superoneclick window and watch the magic, make sure you also install busybox (should be installed automatically when pressing the ROOT button).
9. disconnect your phone, use the file explorer provided with this rom and make sure you check with a "V" to "allow 3rd party apps" in the settings. install the 2ndinit1.4.2.apk file.
open the app after installation and make sure you have internet connectivity, press the install bootmenu option.(now pop-ups should appear regarding permissions, choose "allow" for all of them).
after the green led has turned on, go to settings menu under application/development and turn off the "usb debugging mode".
10. restart your phone and make sure you press the vol down button when the led turns blue during the bootup.
when in bootmenu, choose recovery-> custom recovery.
when in recovery, choose "wipe data/factory reset", "wipe cache", "advanced-> wipe dalvik".
now return to recovery menu and choose "backup/restore"->"restore->2011-06-11.14.14.27".
this should take a couple of minutes.
when its done, go back again to recovery menu, and choose again "wipe cache", "advanced-> wipe dalvik".
power off the phone.
11. hold the vol up button once again and power up the phone to go into bootloader screen.
connect your phone once again to your computer and on the rsdlite window choose the "firmware.sbf" file.
press start and flash it.
12. let the phone boot up, congrats you just revived your phone, root it once again using super one click (if needed), install the 2ndinit2.3.apk.
transfer whatever rom you like (dont try sbf's cause that's how I first got in this mess), reboot phone, go into stock recovery and install that zip after wiping data/factory reset. and ohh well you know the rest.
Good luck.
P.S if you can't or dont know where to find the files take a quick search in the forums and youll find most of them.

when i flash firmware.sbs it takes me back to Android Bootmenu when it reboots please help. thanks
Shouldnt happen, make sure you Wipe Data, and cache, before the nandroid backup and after the nandroid backup.
only then u can flash the firmware.sbf
if the bootmenu still comes up simply choose "Boot-> set default-> normal". and reboot.
if still comes back to bootmenu (and i hope you are talking about bootmenu and not bootloader). install through custom recovery your favorite ROM and don't forget the corresponding Kernel.
good luck!
Is that work with bl7 ???
I've been trying to restore my phone for weeks, up until this thread, I started to think the internet couldn't help me. You are a god amongst men.
OK, banging my head against a wall here; I have 2 defy's. Mine has been to a war zone 4 times, I've replaced the screen (and the waterproof gasket) once, It's broken (the case) but still works except for the fact that the last time I had to flash an sbf I messed up the charging ability with the "macguyver" method.
Now I recently got a pristine looking red lens defy from a friend who said it wasn't booting...It "tried" but never stayed booted long. I tried immediately flashing one of the fixed sbf's with CM10 on it, and ever since I get the bootloader 09.10 code corrupt message.
I've tried the method listed here (by the way the first firmware in OP won't download for me, something about violating some terms of agreement?) the one labeled simply "firmware" downloaded.
Still no joy. Every flash I get all the way through code group 32 checksums match. Everything after that fails. Have tried multiple CEE, Nordic, Chinese, even Defy+ sbf (the new defy has red lens) with no luck.
Likewise when I tried flashing via linux (sbf_flash). The other night after battery out for quite awhile it led me to believe it had started working, and allowed me to get into recovery and wipe everything, but it was all false hope. It still did not boot (motorola M boot loop) and likewise, it still did not flash.
Anyone have any ideas how I can proceed to fix this thing?
I thought I had this thing figured out but obviously I was mistaken.
thanks in advance
I just unbricked my phone again yesterday after trying the latest cm10 sbf with no luck, so i can guarantee this method still works, however the firmware.sbf file is really needed and also the nandroid backup, so here's what i'll do:
1. i'll check what links are broken and reupload the necassery files.
2. I'll clean the the first message and update the links
so check back in about an hour
Thanks a lot for posting this. Tried to restore my phone using lot of other posts since the last 3 to 4 days days, but all in vain.
Was anybody able to install CM10 over this? After the installation, the phone is going into boot loop.
Thanks rtk217 for starting this guide very useful for noobs...

hope it helps someone...

I am really not sure if you have read the posts properly. I had no problems in flashing the defy plus sbf. The defy plus sbf that I gave you was a bl6 version and you can never downgrade to froyo.
97.21.51 is a Chinese éclair with bl5. 2nd boot builds were not working on bl5.
About a month ago I installed a clockwork based recovery app from the market. I tried restoring and this failed leaving the phone unbootable.
Since then I have tried flashing MANY other sbf`s using rsd lite but this has made the situation worse. I think that I even flashed one for the defy+
Now all I get is either a blank screen or a M logo when I switch on.
Pressing power & volume down doesn`t work so I can`t access the stock recovery menu
I can access the bootloader using power & volume up so i can flash more sbf`s but I`ve tried most of them but none will boot.
BTW the phone was running cm7.1 before I had all this trouble and the battery has been fully charged (in another defy)
Is there any way I can clear off all the stuff I`ve been installing and start from fresh? or can anyone tell me how to get the phone to boot?
I have searched for a solution in the forums but most of the replies involve clearing the cache which I cant do as I cant get to the recovery menu.

Your flashs complete with Finish/Pass, or just "please manually power up this phone"?
If it's the later, read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38187413&postcount=2
Just stick to the most highest Defy+ sbf build, or just use DFP-231 build to be sure.

Thanks for the reply
I flashed the DFP-231 sbf file as you suggested but it wouldn`t boot any further than the M logo.
I did get the "please manually power up this phone" message and followed the procedure from the link you gave
I can`t wipe the as I cannot get to the recovery menu.
Is there any other way to wipe the cache?
JeffH
Nah, no other way than stock recovery for stock rom.
Just make sure your flash finished with Finish/pass, that'll make your stock recovery working again.
Wish you a best luck.
i flashed with this:
DEFYPLUS_U3_4.5.1-134_DFP-231_GR_SIGN_UCADEFYEMARAB1B80AA004.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNGIBRRTCEE_P022_A022_Service1FF.sbf
but still no boot
Is this the correct rom?
cheers
JeffH
I wonder if the following might give someone a clue about whats wrong with my defy
If I flash gingerbread rom either defy or defy+ then rsd completes with PASS, and phone will boot as far as the M logo and I can access the menu with power+volume UP
If I flash below gingerbread then rsd doesnt complete but gives `manually reboot` message. If I then power off and plug in again then rsd completes with PASS but when I reboot there is NO M logo and no menu on power and volume up.
I`m keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to revive my phone.
JeffH
With DFP-231 rom, how about power+volume down to boot into stock recovery? I think you're just one step away from reviving defy.

No, Power + volume down doesn`t work, (ie nothing happens). Only power + volume up works.

Thanks, but it didn`t work. Still stuck at M logo. Obviously I couldn`t clear the cache before and between flashing
JeffH
Thank you all for your helpful advice.
I have now sent the phone away for repair.
I spoke to the technician on the phone and she reckons it needs dismantling and a jtag repair (whatever that is).
But beware an app on the market, I think it is called orange backup, as it was after installing this and trying to restore the backup that I screwed up my phone!

Hi,
I have had my motorola Defy Plus running cyanogen for a year or so. Various versions, 2nd init.
Recently I decided to upgrade to Cyanogen version http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2515036
Got it installed and running ok but there were some glitches (maybe) so I started from scratch to be sure.
The method I used to completely re-initialise the phone is as follows.
repartitioned SD, wiped and flashed
DEFYPLUS_U3_4.5.1-134_DFP-231_BLUR_SIGN_USADEFYEMARAB1B8RTGB005.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNGIBRRTGB_P023_A025_M002_Service1FF.sbf.gz
booted into stock android. installed framaroot - rooted.
installed 2nd init
installed twrp
updated recovery
wipe/reset
install cyanogen
The first time I did this it worked (but with some gapps glitches so to trouble shoot I thought I would start again.
Now this is the problem.
the second time when I tried to flash the stock rom RSD lite hung with "please manually reboot the phone"
After this it is impossible to get into stock recovery from the android triangle screen. When pressing both volume buttons the only thing that happens is the screen brightness toggles between light and dim.
I can get the phone to connect to RSD lite and I can flash ROMS - I have tried a few but I cannot get recovery, Always after flashing RSD says please manually reboot phone. The automatic reboot does nothing but get to the motorola or triangle screen, or a black screen sometimes.
Just to clarify - I have googled and tried many solutions, the main problem is that there is no stock recovery from the triangle screen so no solution that relies on this is working,
Any help appreciated. Thanks.
Stock recovery is included in the ... stock ROM (duh) so you need to install completely the stock ROM. But anyway at what serve stock recovery for you?

The one that usually works is DEFYPLUS_U3_4.5.1-134_DFP-231_BLUR_SIGN_USADEFYEMARAB1B8RTGB005.0R_PDS03C_US AJRDNGIBRRTGB_P023_A025_M002_Service1FF.sbf.gz
Which is the retail UK version for my phone. However when I try to flash it now with RSD it gets to the reboot stage but I am not sure it completes.

I think what would solve my problem would be a way of installing the above rom (which I believe includes the bootloader). I need to solve the problem of the flashing not progressing beyond the reboot stage.
I am using RSD Lite version 6.1.4
Any help appreciated. Thanks.
Boot in recovery. Do a total wipe (factory reset). Reboot in bootloader. Flash the .sbf.

There is no functioning recovery, so it is impossible to do a wipe. It is possible to flash a stock ROM (which should restore the recovery) using RSD lite but the process does not get past the reboot stage.
download again the sbf or flash another sbf.

Thanks - good advice I have been trying that. Meanwhile I will be looking out for other ways of solving the problem. I will let this thread know if anything works.
Thanks everyone.
