Problems ending calls - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone. I'm having a problem with my phone where when in a call, the screen will stay black, and I can't turn the screen back on to end the call, use the number pad, or anything. Once the screen goes black, that's it. I have to do a battery pull to get the phone to function properly again. This has been going on since I got the device a few weeks ago. I don't think it has anything to do with the ROMs I'm flashing, I have had this problem with stock, cm7, nightly's, RCMix 3D, and absolution. This is a real pain in the ass, and I hope you guys can shed some light on this issue. Thanks in advance.

Not to state the obvious, but if you have this kind of problem with multiple ROM's the problem is probably hardware.
Though I can't for the life of me imagine what hardware that would be. Whatever circuit physically powers on the screen obviously works enough to get it to start on boot.
You could try disabling the automatic screen off feature during calls. Just bypass the problem by keeping the phone on. It's not a great solution because a 60 minute phone call will really sap your battery. But it might be a good temp solution until a real fix is found.
Did you try a full factory reset, rather than just a flash to a stock ROM? There might be some glitch in the software that a ROM flash doesn't cover.

I had this problem with full stock and s-on. The problem continued even after downgrading the radio and rooting with s-off and multiple ROM flashes. I wouldn't know what hardware it would be either. I don't really talk much, so your suggestion will work until I figure something else out. Thanks man.
Edit: I just tried keeping the screen on, no dice. As soon as I dial out, the screen turns off completely and none of the buttons work. I also tried the trackball hangup option, but no good.

i think the problem is the proximity sensor. it could be misplaced and covered by the front glass.
download sensor test on market to find out.

Downloaded and ran the app. All the sensors appear to be working, except the proximity sensor. It just reads 0.
Edit: I ran the test again, and when I first start it, the "0:" line for the proximity reads 9. As soon as I move my hand close to the screen, it will drop to 0 and stay there.

Well that certainly seems to be the issue.
I can't remember how to do it, but I'm almost certain there's a setting to disable to proximity sensor during calls. Sorry I've never actually used that setting so I have no recollection of where it is.
For all I know it might be the "screen on during calls" setting I refereed to originally.
I knew it was hardware though!
Also, I saw this app. I don't think it was designed to do what you want, but I think it ultimate does it. It was made so that you could answer the phone with a swipe. But in order to make sure the screen is on to be swiped, it disables the proximity sensor.

if youre a fan of miui, there is an option to disable in settings. def sounds like the proximity sensor is the culprit. have a screen protector or case thats interfering with it?

so your proximity messed up. the solution is easy, just remap your end call to hard button.
like this for example:
Code:
key 116 ENDCALL WAKE_DROPPED

If the screen is not coming back on even after the other person has hung up, this will not work. Its worth giving it a shot tho

um, yeah, it still could be the sensor

I had this issue without a screen protector or case. Do you think if I flash back to stock with s-on, HTC would warranty it?

Light sensor

There is one on the G2, right?
The reason I ask is I'm pretty sure if there is, mine is broken, or something. Problem is, when talking on the phone, I am consistently either inadvertently putting it on hold, or muting the phone as it touches my face when held up to my ear.
Anyone else have similar problems?
yeaa there is i have had that happen on my tp2 so many times as well

It has a light sensor and proximity sensor. Mine works perfectly. Whenever I'm on a phone call the screen turns off every time. Next time try setting your phone down while you're on a call and placing your hand over the top portion of the phone. Screen should turn off completely when you get within a few inches of it.

Thanks, that's exactly what I needed to know. Mine does not. The screen does turn off once the time out interval passes, but until that time it stays on, and the hold/mute problem occurs.
Now let's see what I can get done warranty wise.
Thanks for the replies.....
When making a call, my screen only goes dark when the phone is in a vertical position and then you put your hand over the sensors, otherwise if its on a table or laying flat the screen stays on while making a call.

Really? Mine turns off no matter what position it is in. Flat on the table or vertical/horizontal. Maybe it helps to say I'm post-OTA with no root.

Im post OTA and rooted with CM6.1RC2.
Ill try my wifes phone thats post ota only when she gets home.
I did notice that since I put CM6.1 on my phone, the in call features work WAY better.
I have noticed this but only when using the speakerphone button...when I have tried to bring it to my cheek without getting out of speaker, i have put calls on hold and also hung up on them......
I got to see if coming from speaker to headset also has issues...
Just got off the phone with customer service. They are going to warranty it. They didn't say it was a known problem, but I was told by one rep that its not the first time they have seen this problem.

Sounds good. Hopefully the replacement doesn't have any problems. But it seems like they are starting to get their stuff together and sending out some good phones recently.
P.S.
Have you tried a factory reset to fix the prob?

I did. No go.
And on that note, and this might make me sound like an idiot, but since the reset, no matter what I do or how hard I try, Angry Birds refuses to install.
Weird, huh?

HD2 dying after established call

Hello. I have got two EU HD2s and problems with one of them. If I start a phone call with one of them on Sense builds the phone seems to 'freeze'. I can end the call by using the end call button but the screen stays black and the buttons stay illuminated.
There is no way to wake up the phone again and i need to pull the battery. Has anyone else had such problems and got a solution for me?
Edit: I just had an idea. Maybe the proximity sensor is the problem. How can i find out when it is toggled?
Edit2: installed a proximity app and its perma reporting 0,0cm. I will open the phone and see if something is wrong.

Might be something wrong with the actual installation or the ROM itself. Try another ROM or re install.

I have the same problem with 2 HD2 phones. Not aways, but most of the time. I ask this question before - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1349809 , but i didn't get the answer.
May be it is hardware problem, but if it is it's gonna make me a problems every time.
If you figure it out, pls PM me.
Once in a while i have the same problem, but when I clean the screen (until it looks shiny ) and it gets better…
(I clean mostly the top of the screen)
I don’t believe it is the “solution” but works for me…

If you push the End button (or any other button) before clean the screen, what happens. Does the screen stays black???
I think that this is a software problem, because other ways every time when I press the End button (or any other button) it will give me Nothing.

I have the exact same problem. I am using the SD card android version. I've tried different ROMs, but with all I have this problem. When I boot into WinMo I don't have this problem at all, so it doesn't seem to be hardware related.
I can use the phone with anything else without any problem using the SD android version, only when I recieve a call or call out myself the screen blacks out and the phone seems unresponsive. After about 30 seconds to a minute the phone shows the lock screen.
I would love to work with the Android version for normal operation but because of this I still boot into Winmo within office hours...

Your better off doing what I did. In Android, sonewhere in the settings for calling, change the sensor to off so it never blacks out. In Miui rom its in program's, then calls.
Sent from my LG-VM670 using Tapatalk
Task 29 and start fresh. Only thing that got rid of it, test when you first start the rom to make sure it works normal, then start adding your apps and such.
Or increase the 125mhz CPU settings to 245mhz under cyanogenmod settings/performance/CPU or governor settings.

my screen stay black (off) when i take the phone away from my face EVERY call as well. this is what i do and it works everytime.
1.)pull the phone away from my face (duh)
2.)starting with it facing the sky, i turn it to face the floor (when i say facing i mean screen up ... then screen down)
3.)as soon as i turn it back over (screen face up) it turns on
im thinking its a sensor issue??? either way it works and i dont go on a hardware button mash fest to turn my precious leo back on.
if this helps please send thanks ... if not tell me im crazy :-D

I just download this apk and will try it ....
But I think it's hardware problem (may be with the sensor), because when I turn back on Win Mobile 6.5 i have the same problen ...
I think to bring the phone to service
... when I take it back will tell you what is exactly the problem ...
Task 29 then install windows, next install the right radio version , finally install the android
like dragonovus say´s try completly reinstalling android.
and please feedback here
BUILD.PROP baby!!! there is a tweak for this and i believe it works( in the prop ) dont know exact address but google "build prop tweaks" also use setCPU and set the lower number to about 350+ also try to use the end hardware button less cuz this has been addressed in another thread..... the button sticks or sum crap..... i use zmooth and never use the red end button........... good luck
Will try all, but now I use ' Screen stays on '
Sent from my LG-VM670 using Tapatalk
well ... for me Screebl Lite didn't help me
Reinstalling Windows is not necessary. Just make sure you have the right Radio and HSPL then do a task 29 before installing Android. But your problem is most likely hardware related. The end call button is most used and therefore prown the wear and tear... Try using the red end cal softbutton. I guess you only have that problem when you use the hardware button right?
In that case it's the problem with the button and not the software...
And at the end did anyone of u solved this? If u need help post reply or pm me. I think i have a solution for u.

Yes, man! I have the HSPL2.08 and radio 2.15.50.14 ... I think we all do. I can't use the soft buttons, because I can't see them. That's is the problem. The screen is black and won't lights up. May be I can't read you ... but I try to run back Win Mobile just to check is it from android OS or the sensor...
build.prop does not help
I tried the build.prop thing. I added those 2 lines at the end of the file:
ro.lge.proximity.delay=25
mot.proximity.delay=25
No change, still a black screen after any call.
Any other idea ? How to completely deactivate the proximity sensor ?
Fixed !
I finally fixed the issue by removing the screen protector sheet and cleaning the upper left part of the screen with a dry towel.
It works fine now. It was just a problem of the proximity sensor not being exposed enough.
I hope this helps.

[Q] Touchscreen problem: hardware or software?

Hey
I had my Nexus 4 for a while now and today suddenly I have a problem with my touchscreen. It suddenly happend, it didn't fall or nothing.
So, the problem: there is a part of the screen that doesn't function properly. It's at a certain y value or height. It noticed this today when I wanted to swipe down the notification bar. Half the time it flips back up or doesn't do anything at all, sometimes it does work. If I swipe "fast" before that height, it usually works.
I downloaded an app to test the touchscreen and at that height it registers 2 or more fingers or it snaps above or under that line.
Can I fix this or do I need to bring it back for warranty? Is this a software or hardware issue? I also did a reset, but that didn't help...
I uploaded some videos to illustrate (can't post links so insert this in the youtube links please):
1. The problem: /watch?v=kNLbSU0smcw
2. Test: /watch?v=B8ERuBtYeBA
Edit: When I hold the phone horizontally, the notification bar works perfectly.
Many thanks,
Aaron
Update: from yesterday until now the screen was even worse, like I was touching it with 100 fingers, it went totally crazy...
A few hours later it works perfectly normal again
Any ideas?
Ok, I still have this problem...
However, the problem is present and I switch a few time to the lockscreen and back, it's fixed most the time. So I think this must be a software issue.
Maybe undoing a few updates might help? What's the best way to do that?
Are you on a Custom ROM / Kernel? If so, go back to stock ROM and Kernel and see if the problem still exists.
No, never used other roms, kernels or rooted..

I have the exact same issue.. Did you manage to solve it?
Nope, but sometimes I can use it like a week with no problem and sometimes I have it everyday.
At first I thought it might be because of the low temperature in my bedroom, but I tested it and I don't think that's the reason. I removed the cover I bought too, but I need to use it a bit longer to be sure it doesn't happen without cover. After that I'll put on the cover again and check again.
Is it possible that it happens when it is charging? Mine does this when it is charging.
No, as far as I know it's not affected by charging. The first time I had this problem I just picked it up from my desk..
I had touch screen issues as well, less than one month after getting the phone.
Occasionally, after pressing the power button to power up the display, the touch screen would not be responsive. I need to turn off/turn on the display again for it to work. It finally conked out one day when the entire part used for soft keys doesn't work anymore. Just an instant before this happened the touch screen started acting crazy for a few seconds.
Had the touch screen and LCD replaced under warranty.
The problem now is there's a bright white blob in the upper right corner of the LCD, and the proximity sensor sometimes doesn't work, resulting in no display when making or receiving a call.

Yeah, turning the display on/off a few times (so lock/unlock) helps sometimes. The warranty is a bit of a problem here, I bought it in Germany (MediaMarkt), but I live in Belgium. I tried registering at the LG site (Belgian version), but no option to select a Nexus 4 there for support... I did a live chat at the LG site, explained my problem and the helpdesk guy just left the chat I tried to contact them using Twitter, but they never replied. I asked MediaMarkt and they said I'd have to bring it in the a German MediaMarkt... It's a long way to Germany, so I'd rather not do that unless I can't solve it and they reject the warranty in Belgium (although they are obliged to).
I'm also worried that I'd get an even worse phone, like the problems you have with your new phone :s

Ok..I have a RaZr and this happened to me too. One fine day. Playing a game. In the middle of nowhere. I was scared. S*it scared. So what did i do?
I just did a soft reboot. Pressing the right combination of keys and the phone reboots.
Also, here is a very long drawn attempt, but can u try doing a wipe data/dalvik/cache?
Go into stock recovery and do the rest.
It may help, it may not help.

Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 Screen stays black after i type my PIN

Hello recently i had an issue with my proximity sensor it was stucked at 0 cm
until it felt down and then worked for a little time but then stopped again
So i decide to dissasembly it and clean the sensors and everything ( i blowed air and used a tooth brush too)
when i assembled everything back i booted on recovery to make a clean install of my rom
everything was going well until i booted the phone and after i typed my PIN code and drag the screen up to unlock it
then suddenly screen goes black and only turned on when someone calls me.
When im pressing the power/lock or home button always playing the lock sound.
Tried everything, i tried to boot the phone without each sensor but always doing the same thing
I tried to disscharge the phone, pulling of the battery and keep power button pressed for 1 minute but again the same thing
The phone is working well in TWRP (touchscreen) , Can someone explain to me what happend?
Also when someone calls me the proximity sensor is working well.
Running Mokee ROM android 6.0 but i tried to recover back to s4's official backup and the cyanogen release 5.1 but also got the same problem
I think its the proximity sensor could it be?
Is something wrong with my post? maybe i wrote too many and no1 reads it ? or no1 have seen this before?
Anyways i need help so much, i cant call anyone i cant read texts i cant do anything and i cant buy another one
It could be a hardware or software issue. Did you try to find a way to completely disable the proximity sensor in the ROM?
Was the phone dropped? Any loose connections in the phone?
Does this happen if you flash ROMs other than Mokee, for example, Cyanogenmod?

No, because the firmware isn't the problem. Your proximity sensor I believe is screwed up, probably from using a toothbrush on it and scratching the sensor. While I'm curious as to where you saw or heard that bit of advice since toothbrushes are abrasive, it's not really relevant.
Replace the proximity sensor.

Yea i thought in the begining that this is the problem but explain me why on call proximity works normal if i take the phone away from my ear screen on and if i get it back screen off simple normal.
Also i tried to boot the phone without the proximity connected on it and again it was doin the same thing and 1 more question does the proximity sensor have the possibility to lock the phone?
I really dont know what is going on propably i have to buy a new one i think
I used a tooth brush cause i didnt have anything else but i didnt put much pressure i just touched it
I must upload a video to show u whats exactly happening because its very stange i cant get to home screen with any way everytime it shuts the screen off
but if i choose to go to settings and get black screen when some1 calls and talk when i end the call it will show me the settings but if i try to get anywhere else i will get again black screen and when
some calls and end again the call it will show me that i was choosed before its so annoying really.
Forgive me for my bad english.
any suggestions?
