There is one on the G2, right?
The reason I ask is I'm pretty sure if there is, mine is broken, or something. Problem is, when talking on the phone, I am consistently either inadvertently putting it on hold, or muting the phone as it touches my face when held up to my ear.
Anyone else have similar problems?
yeaa there is i have had that happen on my tp2 so many times as well

It has a light sensor and proximity sensor. Mine works perfectly. Whenever I'm on a phone call the screen turns off every time. Next time try setting your phone down while you're on a call and placing your hand over the top portion of the phone. Screen should turn off completely when you get within a few inches of it.

Thanks, that's exactly what I needed to know. Mine does not. The screen does turn off once the time out interval passes, but until that time it stays on, and the hold/mute problem occurs.
Now let's see what I can get done warranty wise.
Thanks for the replies.....
When making a call, my screen only goes dark when the phone is in a vertical position and then you put your hand over the sensors, otherwise if its on a table or laying flat the screen stays on while making a call.

Really? Mine turns off no matter what position it is in. Flat on the table or vertical/horizontal. Maybe it helps to say I'm post-OTA with no root.

Im post OTA and rooted with CM6.1RC2.
Ill try my wifes phone thats post ota only when she gets home.
I did notice that since I put CM6.1 on my phone, the in call features work WAY better.
I have noticed this but only when using the speakerphone button...when I have tried to bring it to my cheek without getting out of speaker, i have put calls on hold and also hung up on them......
I got to see if coming from speaker to headset also has issues...
Just got off the phone with customer service. They are going to warranty it. They didn't say it was a known problem, but I was told by one rep that its not the first time they have seen this problem.

Sounds good. Hopefully the replacement doesn't have any problems. But it seems like they are starting to get their stuff together and sending out some good phones recently.
P.S.
Have you tried a factory reset to fix the prob?

I did. No go.
And on that note, and this might make me sound like an idiot, but since the reset, no matter what I do or how hard I try, Angry Birds refuses to install.
Weird, huh?

i have already tried all the things like take out the battery, press the reset buttom... the problem still occur,

Obvious questions: Have you tried a hard reset?, Diff rom? Have you loaded up anything weird that mighta casued issues? If it will do a hard reset then do it. Start from scratch. If it works then be mindful of what you reload it with. If that doesn't get it, try a diff rom. At this point you got nothing to lose. Will it go into bootloader mode?
Battery comes to mind also. Have you run it down to nothing? Sometimes that will affect the charging capabilities. When the screen is dark can you still hear sound? Def do the HR.
My suggestion would be, to give the HD to your reseller and get it fixed.
I have had the same problem, and as my HD also didn't connect to my PC anymore, I send it in, and got a brand new one, because they couldn't fix it. Make a backup while you can, because the problem will get worse over time.
Likashing, the same exact thing started to happen to me a couple days ago. I've hard reset and flashed a new ROM. It seems that the problem is intermittent. After I just let the phone sit for a few minutes, the screen will come back on. It makes me wonder if this is heat-related issue. Anyway, I'm screwed, because I have no warranty since I bought it from a guy in Australia (I'm in US and needed the T8285).
I'll definitely be keeping an eye here to see if there's any resolution other than repair.
while the screen does not turn on, have you maybe tried to use another phone to call your HD and check if the screen turns on when the call arrives?
maybe if the screen turns on it's more a software related issue (so hardreset et cetera might be worth a try), if not, i fear it's hardware

Exactly same problem here
HTC purchased in Sweden.
Cant switch screen on, when incoming calls come it rings but no screen alive. Vibration when pressing the buttons at bottom. And the low battery sound i can here when low on battery.
When connecting it to charger the orange light at power button will not light up (orange) as usually.
My problems started when i had the HTC in my jacket pocket, a VERY rainy day, so the phone was moist OBS not wet. Thats what i beleive ghappened to my phone.
And now i can not find the purchase receipt to the phone
It might be entirely unrelated, but the screen on my THD also had the same problems immediately after a few flights from coast to upcountry 1800m elevation during summer. The system powered up but the display remained off, and no amount of fiddling would switch it on.
The first time it took a few hours and then spontaneously corrected itself. The second time I had to remove the battery for two days, and then all was fine again. Only happened after flights from coast in summer. It hasn't happened again, but then it's winter here in the southern hemisphere.
I suspect condensation, but that's only a guess...
I have the same problem too here in Australia. It started with the screen not turning on but the buttons still work. Then you'll sometimes notice the screen is inverted and upside-down.
I've sent mine in for service. Haven't got it back yet but I understand the motherboard needs to be replaced.
In short, this is definitely a hardware problem and if you look around the discussions on the net, this is slowly becoming quite a common problem with HD.

Yes exactly, I have had the upside down screen too! Well at the very least it is good to know that people are experiencing this problem other than me. I love this phone so I will have to pay to for the repair. If anyone here has any idea or estimate of what this will cost, please share this here.
The problem for me was the moist, after three days it started to react again... And now it seems to be working...
I guess the air up in the mountains are moist... maybe...

So then that's two people so far (including AFW from the first page) who have said that after some situations involving moisture have passed, things are back in working order. I hope for the same to happen soon.
so it is due mainly to wateR?

I doubt it is related to water. My device never gets near water or moisture and still experience this problem. I do wonder if it is heat related as the device can get quite hot during charging and perhaps cause the motherboard to play up after a while.
btw, does any of you use some sort of plastic/silicone cover. I wonder whether this type of cover blocks the heat from dispersing.
As i understand it, so far only people who have flashed a different ROM (and with it maybe radios) to their device. If it's a heat issue it could be something to do with the radio version. I have tried different radios and there was one in particular that heated my phone up like crazy while i was listening to music without the screen on (but i don't recall which one it was).
I only used stock rom and never flash my device and still have problem...

I do not have any type of cover on mine.
I agree with the possibility of it being a heat issue though.
Very perplexing. This past weekend I again travelled from Joburg to the coast (from 1800m elevation to sea level), and again the THD screen stopped responding to input whilst at the coast. I desperately fiddled, reflashed, hard reset at least 10 times to see if I could get the screen to work, but it always booted up locked, and no amount of fiddling would do anything. I even put the thing on an oil heater for a few hours, hoping that if condensation was the culprit (my current theory) then a goodly dose of heat would at least evaporate any moisture, and once, for about a minute the screen responded, and then again went dead to touch. I had to use another phone all weekend. This evening, on returning to Joburg, I resolved to get another device, maybe the Diamond 2. After a few hours back home I retrieved the THD, put in the SIM and, lo and behold, it worked fine. This is most vexing, but I fear the THD will have to go -- I just can't live with this unreliability. Sad, really, because I love the big display, I love the fact that guys like Throy are cooking good ROMs. In many ways the THD is about the best out there, at least for my needs. But that &@&* thing has to be reliable.
Unfortunately I cannot search since there isn't a search forum button at the moment, so I am just going to throw out this topic/question and see if i can get some insight.
I am running the deodexed EI22 with nubernal (no rom's just rooted) and every time i am on a call the screen will turn back on randomly. And when it does of course my face is mashing buttons and usually hangs up or puts the person on hold or something. My only way around it is if i notice it light up to pull it away from my face wait a second and then pull it back in. Then it will turn off but it will light back up eventually. This is EXTREMELY annoying and problematic.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

no clue then. I always talk on speaker so after the call is connected, I hit the power button to turn off the screen. Never had it come back on.
I noticed my screen come on a few times as well when I'm on a call. Then I move the phone a little and it goes back off. Almost seems like the proximity sensor's sensitivity has radically changed with GB. Never did this on Froyo.
well i'm glad i'm not the only one lol. However this has got to be fixed. I need to take my phone back to best buy anyways cause my bezel has cracked severely. Hopefully they give me a new phone preloaded with Gingerbread and maybe it won't do it on the new one. We shall see. IF BB screws me on the new phone i will be reflashing mine to stock and see how that goes before moving on to the latest Urban Rom.
Hey everyone. I'm having a problem with my phone where when in a call, the screen will stay black, and I can't turn the screen back on to end the call, use the number pad, or anything. Once the screen goes black, that's it. I have to do a battery pull to get the phone to function properly again. This has been going on since I got the device a few weeks ago. I don't think it has anything to do with the ROMs I'm flashing, I have had this problem with stock, cm7, nightly's, RCMix 3D, and absolution. This is a real pain in the ass, and I hope you guys can shed some light on this issue. Thanks in advance.
Not to state the obvious, but if you have this kind of problem with multiple ROM's the problem is probably hardware.
Though I can't for the life of me imagine what hardware that would be. Whatever circuit physically powers on the screen obviously works enough to get it to start on boot.
You could try disabling the automatic screen off feature during calls. Just bypass the problem by keeping the phone on. It's not a great solution because a 60 minute phone call will really sap your battery. But it might be a good temp solution until a real fix is found.
Did you try a full factory reset, rather than just a flash to a stock ROM? There might be some glitch in the software that a ROM flash doesn't cover.

I had this problem with full stock and s-on. The problem continued even after downgrading the radio and rooting with s-off and multiple ROM flashes. I wouldn't know what hardware it would be either. I don't really talk much, so your suggestion will work until I figure something else out. Thanks man.
Edit: I just tried keeping the screen on, no dice. As soon as I dial out, the screen turns off completely and none of the buttons work. I also tried the trackball hangup option, but no good.

i think the problem is the proximity sensor. it could be misplaced and covered by the front glass.

Downloaded and ran the app. All the sensors appear to be working, except the proximity sensor. It just reads 0.
Edit: I ran the test again, and when I first start it, the "0:" line for the proximity reads 9. As soon as I move my hand close to the screen, it will drop to 0 and stay there.

Well that certainly seems to be the issue.
I can't remember how to do it, but I'm almost certain there's a setting to disable to proximity sensor during calls. Sorry I've never actually used that setting so I have no recollection of where it is.
For all I know it might be the "screen on during calls" setting I refereed to originally.
I knew it was hardware though!
Also, I saw this app. I don't think it was designed to do what you want, but I think it ultimate does it. It was made so that you could answer the phone with a swipe. But in order to make sure the screen is on to be swiped, it disables the proximity sensor.

so your proximity messed up. the solution is easy, just remap your end call to hard button.
like this for example:
Code:
key 116 ENDCALL WAKE_DROPPED

Hey
I had my Nexus 4 for a while now and today suddenly I have a problem with my touchscreen. It suddenly happend, it didn't fall or nothing.
So, the problem: there is a part of the screen that doesn't function properly. It's at a certain y value or height. It noticed this today when I wanted to swipe down the notification bar. Half the time it flips back up or doesn't do anything at all, sometimes it does work. If I swipe "fast" before that height, it usually works.
I downloaded an app to test the touchscreen and at that height it registers 2 or more fingers or it snaps above or under that line.
Can I fix this or do I need to bring it back for warranty? Is this a software or hardware issue? I also did a reset, but that didn't help...
I uploaded some videos to illustrate (can't post links so insert this in the youtube links please):
1. The problem: /watch?v=kNLbSU0smcw
2. Test: /watch?v=B8ERuBtYeBA
Edit: When I hold the phone horizontally, the notification bar works perfectly.
Many thanks,
Aaron
Update: from yesterday until now the screen was even worse, like I was touching it with 100 fingers, it went totally crazy...
A few hours later it works perfectly normal again
Any ideas?
Ok, I still have this problem...
However, the problem is present and I switch a few time to the lockscreen and back, it's fixed most the time. So I think this must be a software issue.
Maybe undoing a few updates might help? What's the best way to do that?
Are you on a Custom ROM / Kernel? If so, go back to stock ROM and Kernel and see if the problem still exists.
No, never used other roms, kernels or rooted..

I have the exact same issue.. Did you manage to solve it?
Nope, but sometimes I can use it like a week with no problem and sometimes I have it everyday.
At first I thought it might be because of the low temperature in my bedroom, but I tested it and I don't think that's the reason. I removed the cover I bought too, but I need to use it a bit longer to be sure it doesn't happen without cover. After that I'll put on the cover again and check again.
Is it possible that it happens when it is charging? Mine does this when it is charging.
No, as far as I know it's not affected by charging. The first time I had this problem I just picked it up from my desk..
I had touch screen issues as well, less than one month after getting the phone.
Occasionally, after pressing the power button to power up the display, the touch screen would not be responsive. I need to turn off/turn on the display again for it to work. It finally conked out one day when the entire part used for soft keys doesn't work anymore. Just an instant before this happened the touch screen started acting crazy for a few seconds.
Had the touch screen and LCD replaced under warranty.
The problem now is there's a bright white blob in the upper right corner of the LCD, and the proximity sensor sometimes doesn't work, resulting in no display when making or receiving a call.

Yeah, turning the display on/off a few times (so lock/unlock) helps sometimes. The warranty is a bit of a problem here, I bought it in Germany (MediaMarkt), but I live in Belgium. I tried registering at the LG site (Belgian version), but no option to select a Nexus 4 there for support... I did a live chat at the LG site, explained my problem and the helpdesk guy just left the chat I tried to contact them using Twitter, but they never replied. I asked MediaMarkt and they said I'd have to bring it in the a German MediaMarkt... It's a long way to Germany, so I'd rather not do that unless I can't solve it and they reject the warranty in Belgium (although they are obliged to).
I'm also worried that I'd get an even worse phone, like the problems you have with your new phone :s

I had the same issue with my EVO LTE. It would go away and come back just like yours. It wasn't a software problem , so I sent it in under warranty and they're fixing it free of charge.

I have the same problem. I am using an other USB adapter for loading. And while the N4 is charging the screen responds like crazy. It often detects two fingers instead of one... And using the keyboard is impossible... If I use the original USB adapter it works with no problems...

I bought a cheap usb charger facing the same problem with touchscreen on my iphone 4 and also with nexus 4. I threw it away and I'm using the original, but if you want to replace it pay attention to the cheap one
Sorry for my bad english, I'm italian, greetings from Italy
You have to have a custom recovery to wipe cache. Just reboot into it and select wipe cache

So when I'm on a phone call my phone's screen goes off from the sensor when I put the phone up to my ear. For some reason the screen does not turn back on when I take the phone off my ear. What could be causing this, is it a glitch in the software or do I have a defective phone? If the person never hangs up, I can't get the screen to go back on. After the initial call. I have to keep pushing the power button a few times to get the screen back on.
happened to me

Do you have a custom rom? Is it rooted? This happened to me on my old phone when i had a custom rom (cyanogen) loaded. I haven't made too many calls on the S4 yet, but i do recall it happening at least one time where i had to shake the phone a couple times before the screen would come back from black after calling.
Running stock not rooted.
It could be your proximity sensor take it to the sprint store I haven't had this problem on stock mdc or stock mdl. They might give you a replacement phone or ship it to your house.

You were right. Too bad I waited so long to bring it in the store. I gotta ship it to Samsung now to fix the problem.
