Returned my A500 ... - Acer Iconia A500

Actually, I've had 2, both purchased from Costco.
I really liked them, except for 2 things:
-- microphone weirdness. Honeycomb upgrade didn't fix it.
-- Acer didn't seem committed to Android tablet business.
I didn't mind the weight, and loved being able to carry my library and videos around. Not a game player. But those two things were my hard issues.
ICS emphasizes voice response, so now I'm looking at Transformer Prime, and just waiting. In the meantime, I miss my Android tablet ...

Aye, the microphone is often quoted as the worst part of the whole thing. There's people even here quite constantly saying how bad it is and how nothing seems to help.
For me it has never been an issue, I don't use voice chats and no services support Finnish anyways.

Yea, the mic on them is awful. It's rather disappointing too, the thing takes pretty decent video but the audio is crap.
As far as Acer not seeming committed, I think they're committed as far as any other company is. Expecting anyone to indefinitely support a device is far-fetched, to say the least. We've currently received 2 OS upgrades (3.0>3.1>3.2) and a handful of other updates. They've been a bit behind, but overall I've been pretty happy with their updates. It will be interesting to see if they upgrade to ICS or not.

Anybody know if one of those 3.5mm laptop mic's would work with the tablet?
Does that jack even support one....hmmm.

Don't know why I didn't check prior to that post.
But yeah, just plugged in my mic'd headset, works.
that thing might be a good solution for our microphone woes.

i bought a refurb and the mic seems perfectly fine. same sound quality as any of the other tablets i had.
maybe it's some sort of hardware thing that got fixed when it was being refurbished?

I had the pin from the charger receptacle pop out of the tablet and stay attached to the charger itself (neighbor's kid ran full force through the unit while it was being charged). I sent it back for repair, and they had it back inside of 10 days, fixed, no questions asked, and no charge. It doesn't get much better than that.

Seriously considering returning mine. I love it but the mic issue is too much. I purchased the extended 2yr warrenty from Futureshop so I'm hoping if it doesn;t repaired that I can get a refund so I can get a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Why are so many returning their A500's?

I keep reading post about people being "scared" that acer isn't going to update as fast as they would like. Or their is no Restore yet, bootloaders and other minor annoyances.
One thing I see is request for USB charging. Will never happen, the Acer's dual 3650mah batteries would never get charged under the .5 load that a usb port can supply, I doubt a usb port would even be able to turn the machine on. A quick look at the ac adapter shows it's putting out 12v and 1.5amp and that's capable of charging my machine from about 25% to 100% in about 2 hours. Thats very respectable in my eyes since I can run a full 10-12 hours with really moderate to heavy use (Video's/Music/Games) wifi always on and screen set to auto brightness.
Besides I didn't buy my acer for the software that it came with, I bought it because of the hardware. The Xoom Asus and Acer are pretty much twins as far as respective hardware. If your going to nit pick something, the xoom's SD card doesnt even function, the acer's does. And the Asus transformer lacks USB host all together if I understand correctly, I can't begin to imagine the fun things that could be done when the dev's start tweaking the kernel and making 3rd party apps as well that are capable of using both usb ports on the A500, esp if the mini usb is capable of being switched on as a host as well.. (god i wish i could program my ideas)
As far as the locked boot loader issue goes, it'll get unlocked, as well as recovery, it will come. Even if Acer decided to be a complete ass and never reaveal any flaws in their code base, someone will get it accomplished.
I got the HTC inspire as soon as it was released for AT&T, no recovery, locked bootloader. I lurked on the fourms and saw a mirror of the exact same thing here, i'm scared... im returning mine for this, this or that. Now look at the inspire; there are tons of rom's, and dev support is flourshing.
I'm staying with my A500. I've had it 1 week this Friday, and my until has had no battery drain issues, gps or any other bad issues I've read others having. i have rooted mine, renamed phone / telephony .apk > .bak, and it did help battery some. For the most part I wonder what some of these people are running in the background. (even live wallpapers can seriously strain the battery with the device idle. A good example is the Asus water live wallpaper that has been hacked to work with the A500)
My biggest problem with mine is the market refusing to download and install apps I find until I kill the MyApps service and task, then it works for a few downloads, then refuses again..
I can't see returning something with fairly minor software annoyances that will eventually get fixed anyway. Now granted I love to get under the hood and tinker (I am not a dev though) I see promise in Acer's future with this tablet.
I really can't justify buying a $599 Xoom when it's spec'ed the same as the acer, and has it's own shortcomings that readily already works with the A500.

if you're so scared to drop $450-600 for something then you're never going to be satisfied. me, originally, i bought this to hold me over til the 32gb transformer came out, but the more i play with it--despite it's shortcomings--the more i like it. the screen is really nice, much nicer than i was led to believe due to various "reviews" on the 'net.
it's no ipad screen but then again, what other tablet in this form factor even comes close to the ipad screen?
people need to stop crying so much and learn to live with what they've got. i didn't exactly NEED this tablet, and i could have very well continued living without it so i really don't understand these folks who are just itching to spend money on something just so they can cry about it online.
Acer A500 Ace Enough ?
I think your query is 100% valid. Here in Australia we have the Galaxy Tab 10.1v out but in very short supply, no Xoom yet, so I bought the Acer A500 then got offered a Galaxy but am still waiting for the delivery, I also have an iPad2.
Based on honeycomb alone I like it better than the iOS on the iPad 2, but iOS is really a few years old now and honeycomb is new.
Add in the ACER's native USB that works with drives or keyboards etc, a working microsSD, and the Acer is a force to be dealt with even at more money.
I look forward to the Galaxy but the Acer feels like old hardware with a new operating system, whilst the iPad2 for instance feels like new hardware with an old OS.
Here in oz, I am more concerned at the lag of accessories / cases for anything other than the iPad2
The only hardware issue I have is that it doesn't charge by USB and you get a small residual charge when using it whilst connected to the power
If I was doing it all over again the galaxy tab 10.1v is likely to have been worth waiting for, and might be selling my Acer on eBay less than a week after purchase.
But only if I can get the idea of the working microsSD - not on any tablet yet (but the Xoom should be working in the future) , and USB.. the idea of plugging a usb stick in a tablet is soooo good.
I also find using the Acer as a PDF reader much better than the iPad2 (a big deal for me) and finally I find the bigger bezel and wider viewable screen, better onthe acer than the apple especially when typing.
Live wallpaper is awesome on the acer.
Typing is so much better on the Acer.. iOS 5 has a lot of ground to make up for.
So Galaxy I expect to be better than the Acer, in build quality but not features.
Between the Xoom and the Acer, I do not get the point of the price difference for the Xoom .

In my case I sent it back because I am scared about the Iconia
bootloader is strictly closed at the moment and its
build quality (mine creaked on the right backside just where the border is - heard from few people having the same problem)
and in addition I had the chance to
get a Motorola Xoom at the same price as the Iconia - and because of its
great developer base plus the freedom to customize it in any way
I have choosen the Xoom about the Iconia.
On The Fence
I'm concerned about a few things but nothing major:
1. The "wobbly" charging pin failing once I'm out of warranty - I've had this kind of charging pin on a (admittedly) crappy Archos and returned it to BB.
2. The lack of accessories
The software doesn't bother me since I rooted (easiest root I ever did) the devs will ultimately prevail - what does bother me is if the devs lose interest - then we're dead in the water.
...Probably because people aren't getting the attention from the public they thought they would from buying a tablet. I figure Apple sold so many for that reason...

When you drop $450 on a device on impulse, you look for reasons to take it back. Plain and simple. I believe a majority of people purchasing the Acer A500 were looking forward to the Transformer. When that didn't come (properly, anyway) they hurriedly got the A500 on impulse because it was available.
I think we all know how impulse purchases go. We practically sit there and look for reasons to return the device because we know it's something that we didn't REALLY think through thoroughly and I suppose the responsible part of our psyche becomes hyperactive. Everything and anything becomes a problem and we start seeing issues that aren't really there (not saying this is true of everyone).
The people who returned their A500s are likely serial returners, ie: people who regularly impulse buy and return stuff and between the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the other Honeycomb tablets coming in June, there's going to be plenty fodder for them to get through before they finally settle on a device. There's nothing wrong with that as it's their money and they should spend it how they see fit. There's also the fact that some people are genuinely having software or hardware issues and simply lost confidence in the device.
So why are people returning it? It's all relative. Some people have/had hardware issues. Some are having software issues that they'd rather not wait to see fixed. And some are looking for something "better" to come along down the line.
i took mine back for more than a few reasons
the bulk, it was uncomfortable to hold
the short charging cable
the weird dot grid on the screen
and lastly not knowing how acer was going to handle updates
the biggest reason, the battery life
i liked the device it is just as fast as the xoom, the iconia is a good device but just wasn't for me.
i hope acer does you all that still have it right with the updates
I won't be returning mine. I love this device. I've been on Android for a little over two years and have seen devices come and go. This device does have some flaws like the short charging cable and the strong solid fact that it isn't the Transformer. To be honest why does everyone want the the Transformer over the Iconia? Because it has a keyboard dock with an extended battery plus USB function for an additional 150$? To me thats a waste. Or that fact that no one knows how Acer will handle the Android updates? Okay, that's valid but what about ASUS, they are still unknown to the Android arena. Maybe the dots on the screen that are on all touch screen devices like the Transformer and Xoom are the reasons. Maybe one day the very small development team will stop doing such? So download the Android SDK and have at it. The lack of accessories is a big reason, give it time the device just hit the shelves. There are probably millions more and more to come. I just don't get it, this is a very good device that can do practically the same things as all the other devices. The other reason I'm not returning it is the fact that at first I wanted the Transformer but the more I started to contrast the device instead of comparing, I started seeing that the Iconia does in fact offer a little bit more to it users but it is up the the users to decide.
Maybe those that are so scared should stick to buying APPLE products , dont worry Steve Jobs will decide for you what you need and when you need it!

I thought it was bad in the Windows Phone 7 forum , but in here its even worse ,the "if I dont get my updates I'm telling mommy" crowd is really annoying!
Maybe its because I was around when the first PCs and Macs came about ,maybe thats why Im more patient , I like to figure it out myself , I hate products that are already "Made" Like the Ipad, nothing to do with it, most of the people in here need an ipad if they want a tablet , they dont have to put any sweat into it!

I have to say this forum is the same as the Xoom with everyone second guessing the device, well I had the Xoom, infact I had two Xooms, the first one had wifi problems that developed over time and it eventually took anywhere from 30 seconds to one minute to connect to my wifi.
I had the second one up until yesterday when it completely froze up and nothing would help it. I did a factory reset and everything, finally after a hour setting turned off, I turned it on and it did come back up but the problem's continued with the wifi not working, and the screen became unresponsive. To me the Xoom with it's nonworking Micro SD and all of the other problem's it had was just not worth $589.99 at all, and that was just the wifi only version.
As for all the people complaining about how heavy the Acer is well you have not had a Xoom in your hands, this thing is not heavy at all, I purchased this right after I returned my Xoom to Amazon yesterday and this is a delight to hold next to the Xoom, I was waiting for the Toshiba tab but after reading many things about it and the use of their own market feature I decided to forgo that one and as for Samsung well I tried that one when AT&T sold it for $650.00 when it came out the very first time and all my downloaded apps kept disappearing from it every time I would turn it on. Was told it was a known problem but had no fix for it, both from AT&T and Samsung, needless to say I got rid of it!!
As for the little dots on the screen that the one guy took his Acer back over, all I can say is WOW, I have the exact same dot's on my Inspire, they are sensors that are built into the screen for better touch response!!!!!

I wanted a larger form factor for use at the office, and it gets a workout. I have my Exchange email and my Office documents - perfect for the manager type that I am. Having an instant-on device that I can use for meeting notes is something I've wanted for a long time (yeah, a pen and paper works, but I tend to lose those notes).
Yes, it's nice to play Angry Birds, too. The HDMI connection to my 60-inch LED television makes that experience almost religious.
Having a rooted device is a plus, because that brings Titanium Backup into play, and I find that very valuable.
Add in Pandora, my Music (Google Music this week, too!), and movies on the device just completes the package for me - it's an excellent travel device.
There's quite a bit of nit-picking over features, but what it boils down to is this: do you USE the device? Does it work for YOU? If so, great. If not, return it, try something else. If it's better, please let us know.
Then check back in a year, and let us know how it's going. Technology moves too fast to try to keep up with the latest features. Pick your poison, and make the most of it. Regret is for sissies.

Good to see over here Moe Well, I too am keeping my Acer. It's too early in the game to be worried about updates and/or recovery. I "MAY" consider the Galaxy Tab as my return policy ends on June 7th, the day before it's released. The micro sd and usb are biggies for me. I also have to see what the pricepoint of the Galaxy Tab will be like. I'm still recovering from my Captivate though....

Great to see that you are here lrs421, with all the great help from you and Bubby to get my Inspire rooted it is great to hear from you again, well if I ever need any help with this thing at least there is one person I know I can count on. I am not sure I will ever try a Samsung tab again since I has such trouble with that first Galaxy tab I had and the worthless Samsung tech support!!! I still have a eye on that Toshiba tab, I just cannot get over wanting it, kind of like a itch I cannot scratch!!!! Plus a removable battery is another thing that sounds good also!!!

No prob I'm still learning alot about this tab as well.
This is my point exactly regarding the galaxy tab and "others". I see these threads popping up a lot lately about people keeping or returning tabs, waiting or upgrading, etc, etc. I've spent a lot of time in the Galaxy, ASUS, G Tablet and Xoom forums, in each one it's all the same; some happy people and some not so happy people. IMO, the perfect android tablet simply doesn't exist yet. Futhermore, we have to give these things a little time to evolve, it's only been a few weeks and in the hands of a few devs, albeit capable devs. I've rooted and hacked my Inspire to within an inch of it's life so I really don't mind running the Acer stock until things get sorted out. Those of you considering jumping ship, spend some time in the other forums and see what I mean.
I was torn between the Xoom and the Acer having returned my third transformer because of build quality issues (its a long story).
So I spent about 20 mins playing with each one in PCWorld (uk) today.
I have to say, I have come down on the side of the Acer for a number of reasons, yes there is the obvious ones of microsd, usb connectivity and hosting and of course the fact that it's about 30 quid cheaper in the UK.
But also the form factor was a big influence in my choice. Yes, I know it's a bit heavy but that extra frame real estate is a big help in holding the device in one hand.
I am a big guy with pretty big hands, and when holding the Xoom in one hand, because the bezel is so narrow, my thumb is actually on the touchscreen activating what ever is underneath it, the wider bezel on the Acer means this doesn't happen. Plenty of space for my thumb allowing for a wider holding position, and (because of something to do with fulcrums) as far as I was concerned, greater comfort.

I agree, I just picked up the Acer yesterday because it is available and a good product, but there is alot of ppl returning it hoping for better. I spent alot of time watching the Asus boards and it's the same over there, theres also alot of problems with the tranformer that Asus definately could have fixed before releasing it, and you can't get one. I am hoping that shear numbers of units sold will help out the Acer here, as the general majority of dev support seems to be heavily wieghted towards the transformer. I'm still not sure that ill keep the Acer, but once we get recovery I think ill be very comfortable keeping it.

I got married to a porn star the same day I bought my tablet man, they're chick magnets.
On a more serious note, I dunno, it's a solid device for me. There are issues, and I think forums generally tend to be populated with the more vocal(obviously) people as well as bringing about mob mentality. If the Xoom all of a sudden dropped to the same price at Bestbuy, I might consider an exchange, sure. Motorola has a proven support record for tabs. Acer is an unknown, and their PC's were never that great IMO either.

Goodbye Asus! Can't say it was fun.

I've made a similar post a few weeks back but I thought I'd give this thing yet another try. Well...I'm done with the transformer. I believe this is the biggest piece of junk EVER made. Yes, I said EVER. I am currently on my 6th....read it again, 6th unit!
First 16gb model had a big bulge in the back. Took it back. Second was a 32gb and wifi died completely. Third had massive light bleed and rear panel clicked. 4th, again massive light bleed, so much so that around the edges, blue looked like gray as well as dust under the screen. 5th had a massive white blotch on the LCD to the left of center. Just picked up my 6th unit yesterday, and out of the box, a chip on top of the frame, dead pixel and firmware that doesn't update OTA. Installed update manually, but what if this is bought by someone who isn't well versed in android or computers in general and just wanted something to read books on??
Asus, are you serious with this thing. 6 units and you still can't get it right?? This is my first and I assure you, LAST asus product. Do you guys even have quality control at your factories? This is absolutely unacceptable. It's about a 30 min drive from where I live to where I bought this gigantic piece of crap. Asus, are you going to reimburse me for gasoline in these days where gas is more expensive than ever?
I am utterly disgusted with this product and in fact your company in general. Reminds me of the days when I went through 4 asus motherboards (each time, the fault was confirmed by a tech), and finally opted out for a Gigabyte which has been working flawlessly since day one.
I guess this is what we can expect when crap is built in China where workers cannot wait to finally finish their shift and go home.
Thanks Asus....for nothing. I'm wrapping this worthless piece of crap and exchanging it today for your competitor's product which for sure will NOT come with a damaged bezel. You are formally banned from my household.
And please people, spare me the "mine is fine" crap. Well..maybe YOURS is, but I've gone through 6. I should also add, that each time I was there I had to wait in line behind someone who was also returning theirs. The store admitted to me that qa on these things is THE worst they've seen yet, on any electronic device and so is the return rate.
Transformer = FAIL.

Thanks for submitting a complaint to Asus Customer Care...wait that's right this is XDA. My TF is working great and Asus support has been awesome when I needed them. And the two Asus Mobos I've had work just as good as my TF going on 2 years now.

And as far as the "this is what we can expect when things are made in china" - you better ditch nearly EVERYTHING electronic you own and not buy any tablet on the market considering they will all likely be mostly made in China.

May I suggest that you stop buying open box items? Order from somewhere that takes care of the product rather than a retail chain OR when you get it retail, OPEN THE BOX AND CHECK IT BEFORE YOU BUY.

Now I can't trust anything you say. I am forced to assume that you work for Apple, Samsung, or Motorola.
I would guess Apple though, since clearly the TF is the greatest threat to the Ipad that Android tablets have going.
Seriously 6? I would have stopped on the 3rd. I'm already planning on galaxy tab 10.1 if this one breaks the same way the 1st one does.
Sorry to hear you have had such a hard time with your Transformer. My transformer has nothing wrong with it except for very small light bleed, and it is the first one I ordered. I love Asus products personally, I have always found them to be reliable. I have built about 50 computers with their motherboards, cd drives, and video cards and have never had a single one fail on me, my family, or my friends. Guess we are just lucky.

The next time something like this happens to you, just be honest. Go back to the store and tell them, "Look, I've got a terrible case of buyer's remorse. Can I get a refund?" Better still, think carefully before you buy.

What thing are you giving another try honestly? Trying to bash the transformer in the place where everyone loves the transformer!? Seriously take it up with asus as im sure most people in here don't care and don't want to hear about it. If we wanted to hear about this we would look under your first post, we don't need you reminding us that you suck at buying products and cluttering up the forum.
All I can say is the same as many others. I ordered mine from Tigerdirect, and aside from some small amounts of light bleed, I haven't had a single problem with mine. If you don't like a product, fine. I guess the first question is, why would you go back to a brick and mortar store multiple times to get a product replaced? Especially when almost every single issue you pointed out was rather prevalent in the first batch or so of the product? My guess is that you went back a number of times and got first batch products that all ended up having problems.
My suggestion, buy an apple ipad 2. Better to let you join all the other morons over there than stay here and complain. All I can say is that I hope you get an Ipad 2 that has problems as well, so you can just complain to Apple (who won't care at all).
Hm im still on my first one and no problems here other than a stuck pixel which I fixed and a dust trapped on top of the S on Asus top left of ybe screen but not on the screen itself. Sucks you had a bad experience this machine is a beast im even keeping it stock (for now) because everything is running so smooth and im experiencing no lag. Anyways i dont think you needed to make a thread bashing it I hope your next tablet sucks too

yeah , I completely agree with darkhawkff, why would you go back and forth six times to the same store, it could be that just completely wrecked the whole shipment themselve somehow . I got mine from tigerdirect too and the only problem i had was a littlest light bleed. Just stop complaining about your experience with 6 returns because i highly doubt anyone cares about your opinion of the TF and asus while we are on xda on our own TF that may have a little problems but we deal with it.

I have a VS GTab AND the TF 101. Both have "issues". While I see that HC is still needing improvement, I am happy to go with the flow and see and be a part of the developement. I mean, come on, it is a sub $500.00 device. I think you would be better off with an iFad. Thanks for stopping by!

Meh. Find everybody that had a similar experience to yours, and it turns out you can't buy anything. Since we are here, my experience with Nokia reminds yours. Everything cool with cellphones, a mess with smartphones. 7650, power button stopped working. 3650, spent most time getting reflashed in assistance because it killed itself several times and the build quality was really poor.
Asus actually shared a factory with Apple, they made MacBooks, and there is nothing wrong with those.
Plus, as already mentioned, everything is made in China, even Apple (and people around here can fanboy as much as they like, but build quality is great) so that argument is quite weak.
I'm not telling you to get another TF, or to trust Asus again. But every company has somebody as happy as you... just that

2nd RMA returned with damage! ASUS Finally contacted me, it looks like they do care!

I had to return my Transformer for repairs, my right speaker stopped working. This was my 2nd RMA since purchase. The first time I got my transformer back with a damaged case, this time it was returned with a bent bezel. There is a serious gap at the area where the plug connection is, whatever "tool" they use to remove the bezel bent it out and no one bothered to fix it. Is it impossible to get warranty service from ASUS that doesn't cause physical damage?
On the plus side my speaker works now.
Despite my disappointment and anger I decided to reload while waiting for ASUS to contact me. They somehow managed to damage my LCD as well. On a dark background in the area where I assume the right speaker is I now have multiple blotches of light. It looks kind of like a bruised computer LCD screen.
god damn man. I'm really sorry to hear/see this. Good luck with this. Seems like there are too many rma issues from Asus. Makes me worry about their QA when you have too many issues like this and the Prime issues. Love my TF but Asus makes it difficult to get a next generation.
And I sent my dock in too, that won't be back until Monday. I can only imagine the damage they may have caused there.
Mine quit charging out of the blue and I was forced to send mine in too..
But I got it back quickly and without issue. But I did have one issue. I included the charger and cable because the form said to do so if the problem involved charging the unit. I checked the box showing I included it, and I did. But I didnt get the charger back and they would not help me find it. I wasnt too happy, (they are expensive), but my TF came back in perfect working condition. So I let it go. Your issue cannot be let go..
Its not fair and its not right. But if you keep following the rules, be nice to the people you talk too, it will get taken care of and you will get a working and non damaged device.
Some workers just don't seem to give a damn, since it is not their device..
no wonder their sell numbers are ****.
I sent pictures as requested by the service rep and a letter to the escalation department. I honestly don't know how much faith I have in a resolution though. If they managed to damage it both times I did an RMA how can I expect them to repair the damage they caused without causing more? I will post any resolution or lack of here. I am beginning to feel like I wasted $648.00 (I bought a dock too)

Truthfully, you should have taken pictures before you sent your tablet in. You do not have any proof they caused the damage.

I do have pictures of the Transformer, screen (off)case and bezel. I took them just before I packed it up. It never occurred to me to take a picture of the screen while the tablet was on though.

I posted my story respectfully on Facebook, but how would I go about trying contact Gary Keys? My Transformer is crucial for me in school, I have a neurological problem that affects my hands and makes holding books painful if not impossible at times; I use this to read all my textbooks.

Normally I would agree if someone were complaining about something else that has to do with Android but come on, this is an issue that affects everyone, it's an Asus RMA issue. This is not an iPad/Android tablet issue here.
Asus has some serious issues and not everyone knows about them before they buy the products, that goes beyond asking people to research the specs on something they want.
The OP isn't complaining about Android and there's no evidence the OP even wants to or wanted to go iOS. He/she is not knocking Android, they're knocking Asus and their ****ty RMA service (rightfully so).
Maybe the OP should have gone with an iPad but they didn't and they experienced an issue with RMA. That's no "power user badge of honor", nor does it make Android or the TF101 look legit or tough because you send something in for service and it comes out looking like it went through a war, that's nothing to brag about. Thanks for both replies. I am a loyal Android person ever since my first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1. I also was a loyal ASUS fan ever since my EeePC 900 and 901. I always try to steer people away from Apple toward Android if they are on the fence. I'm not even sure this is really strictly an ASUS issue, it's more like who is in charge of quality control and customer service at the repair centers. I sent a PM and I do understand I may not get an answer, thanks for that info.
I did some research on the white blotches and it seems they might be pressure marks caused by the tech using too much pressure during reassembly after replacing my faulty speaker.
I know the world is not fair, but man, I own a $500 piece of equipment that's been scratched, gouged, bent and had it's pixels crushed by the people who were supposed to fix it.
Yeah I thought some kind of pressure caused those white blotches because I've heard a few people complaining about them here and it was usually after some kind of crushing blow to the device like it fell or someone accidentally put a lot of pressure in a small area.

Yup. I sat on mine accidentally and immediately noticed those blotches afterwards.
On another note, my right speaker also went out. I opened it up to see if it as just a bad solder joint or something, but it appears the speaker has actually blown somehow... connecting a headphone to the leads produced sound. Guess its time to "upgrade" the speakers while I'm in there, since the stock ones were too quiet and apparently also poor quality.
Same story here, send my TF in for repair because I had a black screen.
After the first week a notice that the TF was repaired under warranty and that the motherboard was replaced;
This week took another look to see when the repair would be ready and the status was waiting for the customer.
So I made a call to the support desk and the message there was that the bezel was damaged. I've sent the TF in, in perfect condition and after the repair all of a sudden the bezel is damaged!
Now I have to wait until the invoice to make a complaint and then they will research if my complaint is true!
So this (and other) thread is coming in my complaint
OK - Today I got I my dock back, with a dent too. Granted , the damage is not as bad as the the tablets damage, but my dock was in pristine condition. I probably used it 2 or 3 times since I bought it because of the battery drain issue. I added that info to my service claim with ASUS and will keep calling until someone resolves this to my satisfaction. And yes, I have a video pre RMA showing an undamaged unit.
ASUS service contacted me after receipt of my pictures.(I bombarded them with emails, phone calls, pictures (before and after) plus a letter to the escalation mailbox.) I have an RMA for both the dock and tablet, and of course the service reps statement that it will all be repaired. I tried to get authorization to send it to a different service center but was told only the Grapevine TX center does the TF101. I sure hope they fix it this time.

From happy but unsatisfied 1+x owner

Hi folks, let me get one thing out of the way: I have a 1+x and I love it.
But reading what people post on xda and on the oneplus forum makes me wonder: since when have we become so happy with unfinished products?
I constantly hear "yes, but they'll fix it soon" or "yes, but think about the price". I understand that we paid little for the phone compared to other brands, but we paid little because of the specs, not because of an unfinished software which needs to be updated over and over again.
And don't give me a "well, then you shouldn't have bought it" because it's not like when you ordered it, they inform you about the software bugs.
With the phone that will be used for 1 or max. 2 years, waiting some months to get the basic bugs fixed is an eternity. Also, that the company is young doesn't really matter, I rather have them do better testing, wait one month longer and pay a little bit more for a fully working product than having to wait for something that is supposed to work from the beginning.
As I said before, I don't regret buying the 1+x, I'm just trying to understand why we as the consumer lowered our expectations and accept to pay the full price for an unfinished product (me included) when instead we should get very angry at the producer and I really don't like the companies going like "the product doesn't really work as it's supposed to, but we can start selling it anyway and fix it afterwards". And why does this only apply to smartphones?
Imagine buying a car where you can't switch on the windscreen wiper, "don't worry, they'll fix it with the next onboard-computer update", or a microwave oven that doesn't have a timer function "but don't worry, that will be fixed soon", who would go for that?
Some interesting points made, but also nothing specific mentioned about the X and an irrelevant comparison against the car industry, or if you must compare, then pick something like built in Sat Navs which are ludicrously expensive and rarely updated ( or at least for a reasonable cost). Current car is the first car in 10 years i have owned where the updates are free and available when I want. But even so, I can download a free app that does much of what my expensive sat nav does and sometimes more.
The whole technological world has conditioned us to be satisfied with poor products for years and arguably Apple did a lot to improve things for all of us. I have not owned a single device of any nature where I have not cursed the makers for some omission that seems important to me, or failure to update the software or some inherent bug. Couple that with the throw away culture of those of who who have the luxury to do so and you have the current state.
So what are you referring to with regard to the x that is not working and waiting for a bug fix?
As you say these devices have a very short shelf life and an equally short design, prototype, build, test period. With an open platform and variety of hardware options, issues are inevitable and Windows did a good job of conditioning us to that.

Your're right, but I think the main problem is Android.
Everyone who is going to buy an Android is going to be a beta tester. None of the phones I've had was stable. Every phone had problems.
Oneplus must fix the main problems, but if the base isn't bugless, we can't expect that Oneplus or other producers can make a software totally free of bugs. (Ex. LP is one of the worst versions of Android, even if one the most looking version).

Well I can give you more relative comparison. I have both the base models of the Alcatel idol 3 5.5 and the zenfone 2 2gb variant and both perform pretty much rock solid. The idol 3 does have some lagging here and there but that is known with the 615 chipset. However all major functionality works on both phones. Asus as been pushing out refinement updates about every 3 weeks and marshmallow is due out very soon. Both phones are under 250 and with the holidays around you can probably get them in the sub 200 USD range. We could make the argument that these companies are much bigger and have been around the game longer. But we also must remember that this is OPs 3rd phone now. And that OP is run by a bunch of ex OPPO executives. To top that off OP had major dealings with CM in the initial OPO and borched software and updates. They simply have not learned and continue to throw out half baked cheap products. Forcing their customers into a "wait and pray it gets better mindset".

Everything works, but there are some problems:
- proximity sensor too lazy when you are calling.
- light sensor lazy
- vibration soft
These are for the most annoying problems

To be honest I didn't have any problems. After one OTA the SD card wasn't visible in the System settings, but, at least for me, it was accessible. Since the last OTA this is restored, and there's also App to SD functionality.
Tbh, based on a whole lot of other devices that I've used, the response to fix even the tiniest of niggles has been pretty stunning.
There are so many devices out there with software issues that are never resolved by OEMs. Also, I've not seen a single major hitch in the software. The SD card issue was only a visual one, from what I know, and the update before that was a generic update to improve the camera app and some performance enhancements. I'd say it's good that the OEM is releasing timely fixes rater than letting the issues stagnate.

Android is too fragmented to expect a flawless experience. Hardware is too widely varied and the manufacturers push for new devices too quickly for the fine tuning to ever happen. If Android controlled the hardware like Apple does , you could see polish and refinement. Too many models, too many updates, many issues. It's easier to make it good enough and move on to the latest and greatest.
My OnePlus X should arrive early next week!

Really? The OnePlus X is (for some strange reason) one of the first devices to use the Ultrasound Driver from CAF. It's not about the equalizer, mate. The audio output from the headphone jack is incredible, and IMO you need new headphones if you think this is bad.

Yes, indeed they are fast in fixing issues, but 1) we're talking about OOS specific bugs and 2) we're still talking about weeks, potentially months before it's all fixed. They definitely listen more to the users than other companies, but just today, I updated to the latest OOS version and suddenly there is lag when scrolling in the browser (NBPro, when swiping up/down it literally stops after just some millimeters) and the display seems less reactive in general, especially when using gestures on the lockscreen.
I've read about the same issues here on xda and on the oneplus forum and yes, maybe I can solve it by wiping or resetting, but I don't want to have to do that and spend more time than necessary on it, I didn't sign up to be a beta-tester for OOS.
Again, I'm happy I bought it and I will be patient (CM is close..) but it feels that with each update they fix some issues but create some new ones.

That might be true, but as a customer I expect 100% perfect device since I paid 100% of the price.

Pixel 2 XL bad press and forum experience

So I returned the 64GB XL that I originally ordered due to me not adding the preferred care and seeing all the quality control and screen issues. I reordered a 128 GB device with preferred care and cancelled. All the bad press, all the threads and posts about quality control issues, this being a "travesty" and other comments. I cancelled and reordered 5 times and I finally followed through with the purchase. But only on one condition. I wasn't going to look at articles, forums, videos or any sort of press regarding the device at all for a week. I had read about all the issues and was still weary about it when I received the device on the 26th. I set it up and the first thing I did was look for this blue tint. I have a VERY slight tint at extreme angles that I do not view of device from but it did not bother me a bit and did not interfere with my experience. So what did I do next? I used my phone as my daily driver and in the same manner that I did my $8+. Since the 26th, I have had no issues, and I can honestly say that I could not be more thrilled with this device. It is exactly what I was looking for. My first vanilla Android experience and it is amazing. So with that being said, let's get to the question. Has anyone else avoided the negative press and forums to get their own experience? Has anyone else come to the and conclusion that I have? I can't say that the phone is perfect. I can't say that every device is made equal. But I can say that if you are on the fence with your purchase, just buy it. Experience the device for yourself, form your own opinion. Keep in mind what you have learned from other's experiences, but really form your own opinion with your own experience and come share with us. If you don't like it, just return it. I ordered on day one and my phone was very blue at even a slight angle. I returned it and ordered another and I am very happy with it. the processor is a beast. battery and camera are the best there is. Software and features are way ahead of others and will stay there. You need to try it. Don't read or buy into the negative hype. Try it. If you don't like it returning the device is easy and costs nothing.

I didn't let it get me down. I pre-ordered on the 6th, got it the 28th, never returned it, and never cared about the press.
I don't care about random people's opinions, and I have no idea why everyone does. I figured once I got it, i would see if I like it, if not, I would return it and move on.
The media is and always will be full of ****, the same with the vast majority of people sadly. I still hear people run in their mouth about this device in telegram chats and online that never have nor will hold an xl2, at that rate, why would anyone take anything they say at face value? It's sad that people fall to peer pressure, and can't be big enough to make a decision for themselves, they have to follow the norm.
Anyways, my device like most others shifts colors at an angle, and it doesn't bother me. I always have and will use black themes while I'm on an oled device. You can't get this rich of black color which makes everything else pop on lcd.
Coming from a 6p, this phone is light years faster than it was, and the battery life I've had on stock with the stock kernel, has put all other devices I've had to shame. I couldn't be happier with the xl2
This phone ticked all the boxes I want/need and after the trade in plus the rebate from T-mobile I'd be stupid not to jump on it. While waiting all the complaints about the screen came in so I was curious to see what it would look like when I got it. Opened the box and turned the screen on, tilted it and said...."that's it???". I've been loving it since day one. Best phone I've ever had.
If anything the negative press had lowered my expectations some, so when I finally got my phone I was absolutely blown away by how great it is. I couldn't say if I had not read anything bad about the phone, whether or not my response would have been the same, but all I can say is that this is the best phone I have ever used (going from Nexus 5, to 6, to 6P, to 2XL)
I find it humorous that in advance of the iPhone X, Apple puts out a paper saying that burn-in and blue tint upon tilting device are normal for oled screens, and not a defect. I wonder if all the media sources that blasted the Pixel 2 XL for being a "mediocre" device because of those screen issues will be as hard on Apple as they were on Google?
I've read the articles and kept up with stuff, but I really just don't give a sh__, to be frank. Is there a blue tint at angle? Yup. Does it bother me? Nope. Is there screen burn in/retention? Don't know. (I have not seen anything and don't care about trying it out to see.) This phone is so freaking phenomenal, I can't believe that people steer clear over some bad press given by a bunch of YouTube reviewers that nit-pick everything with every phone ever made.
To prove my point on how little the everyday user cares, I showed 2 buddies of mine my 2 XL the other night. They both just recently got the iPhone 8+ and they've had Apple devices going back to the iPhone 6. Both of them played with my 2 XL for at least 15 minutes. Neither of them mentioned anything about the screen other than they said they loved the lack of huge bezels. Both commented on how blazingly fast it performed. They also loved how it listened for music and displayed what was playing automatically.
I'm happy with my 2 XL. If by some chance Google does some sort of recall, etc. I may go ahead and do that, but as of yet, I see no reason to RMA my phone.
Dang, OP. Nailed my experience, but in a different manner: Ordered during the event and got mine on the 20th. Also came from an S8+.
Have since stopped reading comments on popular Android tech sites due to the sheer vileness of them. Maybe it was present before and I just never noticed, but the comments sections are a total sh_tshow. I am embarrassed to be a part of a community that can treat each other so poorly.
I imagine someone new to the community going on to these sites and just being absolutely stunned by how petty and rude we must seem.
It's not just Pixel articles either; Samsung, HTC, LG.... It's unavoidable.
I like my S8+ and my 2 XL. I liked my V20. My son loves his V30 (and before that, his HTC 10). Why can't we seem to accept that they're all great devices? Why do we have to be so vile to each other?

I preordered it and kept it.
Ive had a Galaxy Nexus Nexus 5 Nexus 6p and now the Pixel XL 2 I can tell you... You will never get a "perfect" phone from Google you just wont. But you dont get this phone because its perfect. You get it because you dont have to wait for updates from the carrier that will never come. You dont have to worry about the bootloader being locked. And you can pretty much count on the most developer support.
Everyone of the phones listed above had an "issue" blown way out of proportion.
Galaxy Nexus was battery life even leading to Verizon offering a extended battery
Nexus 5 had a screen issue where anything after the 1st batch had a yellow tint to the display. (I was lucky to get one of the good ones but then 3 months later my phone decided to not DL or send MMS at all no matter what i did. I had to RMA it and got a yellow tint phone. Oh and battery life issues.
Nexus 6p had screen issues and battery issues where the phone would shut down once the battery reached anywhere from 15% to 50% Oh there was also a software bug on only this phone where the phone would refuse to switch to LTE and the only way to make it do this was to go into the secret *#*4636*#*# and toggle the LTE radio. This was not fixed for 2 security updates
See you will never get a "perfect phone" from Google. Just like a lot of their products start out pretty ****ty and get better through several updates.

I've had a horrible experience through all of this, I'm also a new member here, although I've been a lurker for years. BUT I pre-ordered, kept the order and received a P2XL that is blue straight on and gets worse at any angle. I RMA'd my device, new one will be here this friday/saturday. Thing is after a week I really love this phone and willing to try at least one more as it seems there is or was a quality issue but most here that have RMA'd are reporting they've gotten a better device back. I agree what another member posted about the rhetoric and the way people are treating each other but that's the interwebs these days. Also seems a bunch of people here received great devices to begin with (ANOTHER REASON TO ORDER ONE AND TRY IT YOURSELF) but unfortunately some of them just assume everyone's device is the exact same as theirs and some of them even deny there could be an issue saying "we see these things differently" and we should "just shut up or get a refund". Don't listen to them, don't really take much weight in what anyone says (including me) about their personal experience until you've had the exact same experience with the same device to relate to their issues posted. We're here to share our experiences with these devices with each other but for every 1 P2XL user here there are probably at least 4 or 5 if not more that are ecstatic to own these phones from Google. Remember most people who have issues go onto forums and websites to see if others are experiencing the same issues. So it becomes a breeding ground for every issue ever found on "x" device within "x" days of being released. Like what's been said here before, it's not just here, all manufacturers have issues with their devices and for me IMO the P2XL is what I want/need in a phone. Hopefully you'll order one up and give it a shot, you're truly missing out on an amazing experience with an amazing device.

Neither apples pathetic response to possible issues with the screen nor Google's "we are looking into it" imply a whole lot respect for the consumer or confindence for their devices.
You can like your device, you can claim its perfect, beautiful, whatever. But for this price, nothing short of perfection(as much as it can be achieved) should be demanded.
If im paying a grand, i dont want to be bothered by RMAs or other BS.
If they have QC issues, they are free to perhaps ship some jobs back to Europe/America. Im sure they have enough money to pay decent wages for people to QC their devices or produce them here.
If not, they should not expect mercy from the consumer or press, and yes this includes apple too

You do know you're paying for more than hardware right? You don't really think you're getting a minimum of 3 years OS updates, a minimum of 3 years of monthly security updates, support help right on the device, and all that unlimited storage for nothing do ya.

No device is without "issues". Not a one.
If you won't pay a grand for any non-perfect device, and no such device exists, you are basically claiming no device is worth a grand.

Do you believe any of the current issues would be present, if they had QC that actually was managed properly?
It cant be because of technology that the device costs this much, about a grand, in 2017.
Surely they can afford proper QC at an asking price of 1 grand.
Im not sure proper QC is like pink unicorns, but i guess people should just shut up.

Thats true, i wish only they provided a black skin/overlay for android.
Its 2017 and only custom roms offer amoled friendly UI.
Im not sureni value android updates when they offer no enhancements i need.

QC doesn't stop issues from reaching the public. It limits them.
A certain number of bad devices will invariably get out in the market. This is unavoidable.
If you are trying to claim that it is avoidable, that any company could release a device and the public would not see a single failure, please - do tell; what fantastical device is it?
If you are trying to claim that *all* Pixel 2 XL devices are bad, well, you're entitled to your opinion, but if that is indeed the case, your opinion is not at all relevant to us.

Pray tell, do you really believe issues such as blue tint or burn in wouldnt be caught by proper QC?
These issues are so obvious, even non-tech savy people can notice them.
And no, i didnt claim qc prevents all bad apples, but thw moat obvious ones. Way to strawman my point there.
All google needed to do, when noticing issues in QC , is hold off on the release date.
You can probably imagine how much i enjoyed last years fiasco with exploding batteries with samsung.
If anything, that was the epitome and parody of the flagship smartphone industry.
Imagine buying a porsche and getting one that had paint issues or an expensive mercedes with discolored glass.
If i wanted to gamble and try my luck, i would get an Oppo, not a pixel or samsung.
I agree with both you guys lol. IMO the issue is when testing Google from day 1 just looked past the blue tint and other issues thinking "This is the way it has to be" "it's a trade off" and software updates will fix it or it's just supposed to be like that. Hence the quality issues, if you tell your QC dept that it's supposed to look like that then they'll unfortunately let them all leave the factory like that. Probably why there's 50 shades of blue and no direct reasoning or answer from anyone as to why there's such a variance between the exact same devices produced on the same date even. BTW shadowcore is onto something I've been previously saying, yea there's shortcomings with any new device but it shouldn't be this bad all over the map with these things for the price they charge. And then attempted sweeping under the rug of it all, "working as intended" just to rub ya the wrong way after all that money spent whether you got 5 discounts or paid full retail. PRINCIPLE. This is top tier device I know it's been done before here but would you buy a brand new BMW/AUDI/LEXUS/MERCEDES and be just fine with creaking plastic crappy interior you sit in every time you drive? We need to interact with this screen every day all day for some people.

Is their QC sub-par? Do they actually have more defective units than other vendors?
Is there anything other than the initial media coverage, now little more than background noise, that implies Google's devices see more defects in the market than others?
Or, as you just admitted in the last post, are you just super happy about any and all failures and maybe that is what is driving your fervor?
I mean, even if that's what it is, I get it. These companies make billions - watching them trip and fall, even if it's only in our perception, can be somewhat cathartic - is it really any more than that, though?
