In general this forum should be used for questions, answers, progress reports, and tools pertaining to development boards and non-device-specific hardware. This forum should be used for development relating to the hardware of devices and in many circumstances dealing with families of devices.
Questions pertaining to rooting and installing custom ROMs will be deleted imediately or moved to their respective device forums. No device-specific questions should be asked.
This forum is not a place to ask questions about operation or hacking of operating systems. Topics relating to bricking, bootloops, and other software related topics should not be here. Threads of this topic will be prompty deleted or removed to its specific forums.
If you want information, you must provide your own research first. Datasheets, Web-Pages, references.. If you would like a how-to JTAG or UnBrickable Mod guide be prepared to send your device or work with someone who can help.
Generally threads will be tagged with the related hardware ie... [hummingbird] [OMAP 36xx] [FSA928] or Series of related hardware [GalaxyS]. Software tools should have a descriptive tag [Source], [Tool], [Program] or [Release] and [Windows], [Linux], [Mac] or [Cross-Platform].
It is permissible to post non-original work as long as proper credit is given to the original author. The thread may be moved to general or deleted if the original author would like to take control of the discussion thread. This policy is applicable for this forum only as several tools are created during the development process of a piece of hardware and discarded, forgotten or left unsupported upon release.
Please keep in mind, this forum is for discussing hardware and methods of interface and/or modification. While the discussions may stray into specific devices, it is best to contain individual device related topics in their respecive forums.
With that said, please discuss hardware topics. It's nice to finally have a place we can go to and chat about cross-device hardware.
I think I might have posted my question in the wrong topic thread. How can I move it to it's proper place?

First of all, I want to tell you that, I absolutely agreed with what you had mentioned in this post.
Truly a serious forum to go through.
Thanks for clearcut rules!. I have been visiting XDA-Developers from more than a year. Yet, I did not get much opportunity to ask or to share. Somebody would always be there before me. This is not a disadvantage, it keeps the forum clean. I shall post only when it is crucial and relevant.

Hello folks.
Firstly, if you want to ask a question about anything it must be posted in the QUESTION & ANSWER SECTION.
Please be aware that recently Development and hacking has been divided into a few new sub-forums to cover what usually would all go into the one Development and Hacking Forum.
This gives us the change to make Development and Hacking more clearer in general. (and clean out some threads that never belonged here in the first place)
But at the moment some new threads are still being posted to the Development and hacking Forum.
So maybe it is a good moment to clarify the new divisions in short.
1. Windows software development
What the Development and Hacking thread used to be intended for in the olden ages. For Questions about coding Apps in progress Development and Cooking tools. All within the Windows Mobile OS platform and off course tools for this platform to be used on a PC platform.
2. Windows themes
Skins, backdrops, Skins, Backdrops etc etc you get the idea. For Windows mobile or Apps running on Windows Mobile.
3. Windows applications and games
Finished Applications and games for Windows Mobile. Threads in the Windows software development section can be moved to this thread once you consider them out of Beta and such.
The most important thing to begin with is, to not post new threads to the development and hacking forum, unless it fits here. But post these to the new appropriate subforums.
Thinking of posting a new thread???
Use the search button on the top bar between "New Posts" and "Quick Links"
If any mod, including myself, continue to find new threads about topics that have threads already existing.
The thread will be locked with no notice and/or up to a temp BAN!!.
Mods, including myself, are not here to keep the forum organized after the fact, we need your help to keep it organized, clean and grouped.
To the dedicated members that care to keep this forum, subforums included, clean and organized and grouped.
Please start reporting threads to the mods to take action. Using this button.
Thank You and happy easy searching.
If you already have a thread in the development and hacking forum you can request to move it to a more appropriate subforum.
Please feel free to contact me madnish30(D&H FORUM MOD) if you want a thread to be moved or closed.Of course even if you do not own the thread you can still send me a recommendation on where a thread would belong better.
ATTENTION
If you have a REQUEST OR IDEA for any NEW OR EXISTING APPLICATIONS/SOFTWARE/THEMES/GAMES/HACKS ETC it must be posted in the QUESTION & ANSWER SECTION.
ALL POSTS MADE IN THE DEVELOPMENT & HACKING SECTION REGARDING THIS MATTER, WILL BE CONSIDERED A VIOLATION OF DEVELOPMENT & HACKING SECTION RULES AND DEALT WITH APPROPRIATELY
Also, if you have an idea for an existing application/software/theme or would like to request changes to the above, you should post your comments and ideas in the specific thread where the original application or theme is found, or post your threadn in the Question & Answer Section.
The Development & Hacking Section is open for users to post there contributions (application/themes/software) to the XDA Community, and is open only for this reason. Any post which does not do this, makes searching for a specific application or theme impossible.
If you have any questions, or need any help with figuring out where your thread should be opened , Please feel free to contact me madnish30(D&H FORUM MOD).
I thank your for you time, and help.
Cheers.

Post What Where:
General - general technical discussion items, news, anything else that does not fit into the other fora categories.
Q&A (Questions and Answers) - all questions, irrespective of type, get posted in here whether they be theme related, accessory related, technical, etc.
Accessories - any items to do with components and/or accessories relating to your device.
Rom Development - only meant for very advanced technical discussion directly related to ROM development activity and the delivery of actual ROMs and ROM components ONLY. Nothing else goes in here.
Themes & Apps - anything to do directly with the development of themes and/or applications. Nothing else goes in here.
MOD EDIT: BEFORE POSTING ANY THREAD IN THE DEVELOPMENT SECTION, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:
If you have developed a ROM, or are working with others to do so, the development forum is somewhere to discuss and share ideas, post useful feedback and logs or crash dumps, and to discuss a common goal developers are trying to achieve.
It is NOT the place to post your question because it gets higher traffic, or because more experienced users frequent it. Doing this just annoys those who are working on the device, and drives them away. Developers don't want to wade through 20 threads of "Help me urgently" to find their threads for porting and fixing camera issues etc. Similarly, if a thread is designated as discussion for developers say, porting a camera fix, please do not post in there asking "When will it be ready?", "Can I flash this yet?" etc. This is both completely disrespectful to those working on the project (you evidently haven't read the important posts in the thread), and also is making it harder for developers to find comments from other developers or testers when required.
Similarly, don't make loads of "Thanks for your work here" posts in an active development thread. It's just as annoying to developers as asking when something will be ready. If a ROM is complete, then go ahead and thank the developer if you wish, but don't go into threads for devs only, and interrupt it to post "thanks". It's basically spamming, and is treated as such.
If you are posting in development, you should have read every sticky and notice there, and should be actively developing or helping in the development of something. Developing isn't installing a ROM, or using a tweak, it's creating a ROM or other hack or tweak. If you haven't read for several days before starting out on XDA, you are likely about to ask something already solved. I registered on XDA when I first wanted to post, and that was to join in a discussion on something. Sure, join up and ask a question, but read the information available in General and Q&A first, as your question will have been asked before. Search is your friend here, become familiar with it.
Regarding when to post in development if you are not actually developing something, there is one occasion where it's acceptable. If you find a leak of a new ROM, which isn't already posted, and you verify it's legitimacy via either running it, or based on the source you obtained it from, then this is assisting in development, and should be posted in development. If you want to ask when a leak will be available use search first, then if not already in discussion, open a thread in general or Q&A.
If you have a problem flashing a ROM, this is NOT related to development. It's up to you to determine if it is specific to a particular ROM, and post useful information in that developer's existing thread for the ROM. If it happens on more than one ROM, and isn't a known issue (remember you should read several times more words than you post), then find out what you are doing wrong. Check guides written by others, try to repeat the problem and see if it happens every time. Something needs to be reproducible to be fixed effectively.
Once you have identified what you need help with go to the device Q&A forum (general if device lacks one), and make a clear, informative thread that explains the issue, and what you have tried doing to fix it. Did you re-download the ROM? Did you ask a friend to flash it for you, to reduce chance of user error? What steps (exactly) did you follow? What errors did you see (exact wording)? Did you double check all the steps? Did you do a wipe or hard reset?
If you make a clear, concise, yet detailed post, you will find help forthcoming, and should get the problem sorted very quickly. If someone suggests you try something, report back on what happened, did it work etc. Then, next time someone has this issue and searches, they will find this and have a verified and tested solution.
So remember... before you start a thread in development, ask yourself what you are developing. If you can't answer, then stop, step away from the post button, and think about where you are posting. Would it be better in General or Q&A, or is some more time with your best friend, search, required?

I don't really care if the sound is okay for you. For a lot of people it's not okay and so I was wondering if a solution exists and I thought that this would be the best place to post. Likewise, you may care about wifi tethering or HD recording or multitouch or whether it has 16e6 or 16.1e6 colours...which I don't. This sounds a bit aggressive but just because it's not a problem for you doesn't mean that someone else can have a problem with it. Yeah?
Apologies for posting in the wrong area...just thought it would be where the clever people who were developing the phone would post if they had a fix for the low volume that doesn't appear on CuBz90's phone

True, but in the same respect you could be polite to the other users, developers and rules of XDA and not posted this in Development.
Closed thread as you got an answer and moved to "General" the proper place for a thread such as this.
Hi,
I really don't understand the pattern behind the allowed post in the dev section.
What I'm understanding is that the dev section is for ROM/Kernel only : when I tried to post a dev-related suggestion,
I was warned that it was wrong, and was threatened (!). Now that iron fist is in effect, I think people are "scared" to post
anything related to dev investigation into the dev section, and now all goes by default into the general section when we
have some doubts. Which creates a new disorder, ironically by trying to force order.
The dev section is now only a collection of <10 alive threads about custom kernel/rom. Not really alive section with thoughtful discussion about general dev ramblings. I've found dev-related threads in the general section (see for instance android arm sdk thread, but there is other cases, I let you find it as an exercise ;-), where someone pointed out the problem "Omg dev thread into a general section !". I think there is a problem.
Because it's really annoying to see the dev section becomes a kind of closed area where you are only allowed to post rom or kernel, and without to be able to think about dev itself. Dev section, as its name points it, must allow to speak about dev related things, whatever are these things. And it's a mess when you want to search something dev-related and find it in the gen section.
Moreover, I don't like the iron fist policy, which threaten people to ban them. Threatening=Terror. Maybe mods are responsible too for this situation, where sometimes there is a lack of clarity. I'm not a newbie, and I've posted wrongly. I consider that there is a mismatch between the subforum name (dev) and the allowed content (rom/kernel only). Or if this is not rom/kernel only, there is a kind of quantic pattern, where you never really know if your post will be accepted or not.
For sake of clarity, I suggest to rename the dev section "custom rom and kernel", and to create a new general dev discussion ; or to open the present dev section to general dev-related discussion, without - please- threatening people to ban them if they are not posting something about custom rom or kernel. Really don't like this way to communicate, it's like mods have forgotten they were newbies some time ago posting in the wrong section. Educating people by threatening them : I don't believe that it works. Whatever.
That was my iron fist on the iron fist.
The development section is for posting actual development not questions about development or asking why eclipse isn't ported to ARM. If you have a development question then there is a question and answer forum. If you want to talk about apps and their development then post in apps and themes. The development section is for the development of roms and kernels and the actual tools for development.
As has been said 100's of times this is not a democracy and this is not for customer service. All anyone has to do is read the forum rules and search a little before posting the same question over and over again.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1249254
If that thread was actual developing of eclipse on arm then it would be development but its just a poll to see if the developers of eclipse should port it to arm.
HUGE difference
Ok, if this is not a democracy, but a dictature, I have nothing to add.

XDA is and always will be about the developers. People that could give good feedback with relavent info. Not just "dahhh this is broken, please fix".
XDA is not a place to come and make your phone cool.
XDA is not the cool place for idiots to hang out.
XDA is not your friends house
XDA is not a democracy
XDA is not a place to make Money.
XDA IS a place to come to learn and share your knowledge. If you are not here for those reasons then you are here for the wrong ones.
I have watched XDA become a place where every dumbass in the world has a smartphone and comes here thinking they have the right to anything. Well guess what? You dont have the right to ****. We share it because we want to and we dont if we dont feel like it. Are the Developers or the Mods required to make you happy? Nope not in the least. Wanna leave. Go ahead. I beg you, please do. The less people that are asking dumb question cause they dont know what they are doing (this is understand, but at least look) or are too lazy to look for it the better.

Hello!
First off, allow me to welcome both new and existing members to the Forums. These look to be exciting products, and I am really hoping to see a great community spring up here. As we like to do with a new forum, we like to introduce ourselves. Of course, as noted, the moderating team assigned to the forum include:
Team Leader/Senior Moderator @Moscow Desire
Forum Moderators @Siberian Tiger, @chrisd1a1, @Divine_Madcat @zacthespack
Personally, i am an avid tablet user, and am currently using both an HP Touchpad and Nexus 7 (2013), as well as a Samsung S4. Please make no mistake, while we all may not be owners of this specific device, it is our goal to be a strong part of the community, and i hope you will allow us this opportunity. I, like the other moderators, have an open door policy, and i welcome anyone to contact myself (or other staff members) to contact us if you have any concerns or questions about the forums (but please direct device specific questions to the Q&A forum).
With that said, i would like to take a moment to reiterate the overall guidelines of the forum, in the hope to prevent issues down the line...
1. Posting in the Development Forum. Creating new threads in the Dev Forum is restricted to development work; this may include Kernels, Root tools, ROMS, and other device developments. If you have a question about a ROM or the device, please post in the Q&A forum, so that the question may be answered correctly.
2. Arguments and Flaming. This really speaks for itself, but bears saying again. Be respectful, and be a community; work together and make this a place that is welcoming to everyone, new and old. If an argument starts, DO NOT participate in it. You have a "Report Post" button. Use it. Let the Mod's take care of it. You are not moderators, so please don't act like it. You don't make anything better by participating, and you may find yourself in trouble as well.
3. Please take a moment to search before posting; forums for popular devices can get hectic, and it is only made worse by having 5 different threads on the same topic. While mistakes happen, we need everyone's help to make sure that the boards are readable and usable for everyone. Odds are, if you have a problem, you are not the first person to have had the issue; you may very well find the solution already discussed. If a thread covering your topic is already there, please keep the discussion in that thread.
4. We are all here to help the users, and to mainly help continue the development of the devices. This is a Development site, not Facebook or other social networking sites. While some off topic banter is to be expected, please keep off topic conversations in the appropriate area; this is especially true for development threads. Too much OT makes threads hard to use for people with real issues/suggestions/questions
